FROM THE GAFFAS Firstly I would like to welcome all the fans, players and staff from Padiham to Runcorn Town today along with all our fans. I hope you all enjoy the game. It has been a tough first few weeks in the job and after a home game initially, we have had four successive away games all over the North West. We have learnt a lot though in this time with this run, with some fantastic commitment from the lads who were here when we arrived. If we can play like we have in the last two games then we will be fine for the rest of the season. That's something I need to point out from a fans perspective too, as myself, Niall, the staff and the players have been overwhelmed by the support you have given us on the road. Tuesday was the most recent game at Prestwich, with horrendous weather, and your support was unreal. I would just also like to add a massive thanks to the club for the help and support they have given me, Niall and Johnny in the first few weeks Helping to settle us in the club. It's been a tough few weeks to be honest in terms of results and the change of

personnel to the players but we are hoping the lads will now settle in and push the club forward where we want to be. In terms of results, they haven't gone our way yet we know, but performances from the lads have been OK. We know as a group we have to get fitter so that we are competing at the end of games, and we know we have to work on things too from our perspective. But that's something that we are looking forward to, and the lads are now buying into what me, Niall an Johnny want and what we expect We are all working hard off the field to get things right on the field and it will come. We would like to wish Geoff's granddaughter Anneka a Happy Birthday for yesterday, and we hope you enjoy your day as club mascot today. Hopefully today's game is an exciting game and we can take the three points and push on. Enjoy the game!

PADIHAM WE TAKE A LOOK AT PADIHAM'S MANAGER, AND PICK A PLAYER TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS AFTERNOON

Michael Morrison

Marcus Perry

Mozza has been in sole charge at Padiham since Boxing Day 2019, when his former joint manager Adam Morning stepped down.

Marcus started his career at St Helens Town before moving to Irlam in early 2016.

He’s won promotion with the Storks in the past, as well as reaching the play-offs in the Evo-Stik League’s second tier. He is also no stranger to Runcorn, having played for our noisy neighbours Runcorn Linnets in the past when they were in the NWCFL. Other clubs that Mozza has been at include Ramsbottom United, Longridge Town and Nelson, for whom he was a joint player/manager back in 2012.

There he established himself as one of the top players in the NWCFL as he helped them to the 5th Round of the FA Vase and finishing the campaign as their top scorer with 18 goals to his credit in 2018/19. He then moved to Atherton Collieries and onto Ashton Athletic where he remained until the start of this season. Transferred across to today's opponents Padiham in August and is leading goalscorer for the Storks with six goals this season, as well as four MoM awards.

ABOUT OUR VISITORS A BRIEF LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF PADIHAM

It might be hard to imagine today, but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham FC in November 1878, the club were considered amongst one of the better club sides in England. The club was amongst the first football clubs in Lancashire and was well supported, attracting an attendance of 9,000 for a match against neighbours Burnley in 1884, the club’s record attendance. The club was in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Association’s Senior Cup Competition in 1879, and reached the Third Round of the FA Cup in season 1883-84 before losing 3-0 away at Blackburn Rovers. Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon, with visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals. Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the

08

legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham’s progressive outlook at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold that football finance came to have on small town clubs. Unable to secure the services of players to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result, reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict activities and played in local leagues. The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club’s involvement in football until after the end of the Second World War. The club was resurrected with the opening of the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground in 1949, and the first fixture in the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination Football League on 20th August saw 1,777 spectators turn up. The club struggled in the Combination, but in 1960-61 were promoted. The

Second Division again proved a struggle, and after finishing bottom of the league in five of the next seven seasons, the club joined the West Lancashire League in 1968-69.

runners-up behind Bootle to achieve promotion to the NWCFL Premier Division. The club also reached the final of the First Division Cup where they lost to AFC Liverpool.

The first season in the West Lancs was saw Padiham again finish bottom and relegated to Division Two, but won their first ever Championship in 1971-72, winning 25 of the 29 games they played. Another Division Two championship came in 1976-77.

The club continued to upgrade their facilities at the Arbories, and in 201213, they had perhaps their finest moment as they won the North West Counties Football League, picking up the title here at the Viridor Community Stadium.

They rejoined the Combination after a ten year hiatus, and after five successful years the club became founder members of the NWCFL in 1982-83. After relegation in their first season, the club were promoted as runners-up the following year, although the club was relegated again the following year.

With a small playing budget compared to a lot of teams in the league, the club struggled, finishing in 19th place, and the following season was relegated after finishing bottom of the league.

The club limped along in NWCFL, before dropping down into the West Lancashire League. Placed in Division Two, the club struggled and finished bottom in 1995-96. They bounced back with another promotion the following season, but were relegated again in 1998-99.

They will be no doubt looking to turn things around as soon as they can.

Back in the NWCFL for four seasons now, Padiham have finished 17th and 18th in the last two full seasons played.

The club then announced that they were looking to rejoin the NWCL, and after spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on the ground, were successful in achieving the grading. On the field, their last West Lancashire League season saw them win their third championship, finishing ten points clear.

Runcorn Town became the first visiting side to pick up a point at the leasing.com stadium, thanks to a solid performance in a 2-2 draw against league leaders Macclesfield. There were 5 changes from the defeat at Avro. Brandon Burrows and Andy Brown made their debuts after signing last week. Joe Holt, Craig Cairns and Richie Foulkes also came into the staring XI in place of John Shaw, Tom Ruffer, Sam Hughes, Reece Dwyer and Lewis Rawsthorn. Macclesfield made a strong start and Adam Reid was called upon to make saves from Neil Danns and Max Bardsley-Rowe. Town’s best chances fell to Foulkes whose shot was deflected wide and Frankie Antoine who had a shot blocked. Reid made another decent save from Kielen Adams as Macclesfield pressed towards the end of the half. The hosts took the lead on 60 minutes. A cross from the left was headed back across goal where Neil Danns headed home from a couple of yards out. Town equalised 8 minutes later. A goal kick from Adam Reid was flicked on by Andy Brown to Craig Cairns who lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the net from the edge of the box. Tony Davies went close on 70 minutes when his header from a corner was well saved by Liam Lovell in the Macclesfield goal. With 10 minutes left Town were awarded a penalty after a handball in the box. Richie Foulkes stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to give Town the lead.

Macclesfield were awarded a penalty in injury time when Scott McGowan was brought down just inside the box. Neil Danns sent Reid the wrong way from the spot to equalise. Niall McGuinness and Aden Shannon were encouraged with the performance and the improvements they are seeing over the last few games. "Saturday was an improved performance from the side and there are plenty of positives to take, having took the league leaders to the end, but disappointing to not take 3 points in the end. "We have a long way to go but we will continue to work with the group to improve week on week and get the lads up to the levels we expect. We have a lot of talent amongst the group and have another couple of bodies coming into the club this week to again add more quality. "It’s important now we back up that result tomorrow evening at Prestwich and give the fans a result and 3 points we’ve been building towards." Photo: George Perris

RUNCORN TOWN

Runcorn Town were denied another good away point with a last minute goal meaning a 3-2 defeat at Prestwich Heys. The starting XI was unchanged from Saturday's draw at Macclesfield. New signing Calyn Barlow was on the bench. After 3 minutes a well worked corner from Prestwich almost brought a goal - Greg Daniels’ shot deflected wide off Brandon Burrows. Prestwich were on top early on. Joe Rothwell had a great chance to put them in front on 11 minutes, but Adam Reid was out quickly to block the shot. Prestwich took the lead on 17 minutes. Greg Daniels shot was blocked by Liam Turner's arm resulting in a penalty. Jack Coop’s effort from 12 yards was brilliantly saved by Reid, but Rothwell was first to the rebound to fire low into the net. Reid was being kept busy and the Town number 1 did well to turn Oscar Campbell's shot from 25 yards round the post. Town started to come into the game more and Frankie Antoine had a deflected shot well saved by the keeper. On 29 minutes Town were awarded penalty when Joe Holt brought down in the box by Corey Kelly. Richie Foulkes smashed the penalty into the corner to equalise. At half time Tom Ruffer and Calyn Barlow were brough on for Jack Lloyd and Brandon Burrows as Niall and Aden shuffled the pack. The changes made a difference and within 2 minutes a great ball into the Prestwich box from Kevin Exell was almost scrambled in by Antoine at the far post. On 57 mins Antoine’s shot was saved by

the keeper and Andy Brown tucked in the rebound, but the flag was up for offside. It was Town now looking most likely to score. On 64 minutes Tom Simpson made a fantastic double save - first saving Richie Foulkes free kick then the rebound from Andy Brown. Foulkes then almost found the net with a free kick that grazed the foot of the post. A minute into injury time Town found an equaliser. A corner into the box was eventually scrambled in by Craig Cairns. Foulkes was then shown a second yellow card following a scuffle with Prestwich keeper Simpson while trying to get the ball to restart the game. On 93 minutes Prestwich won a free kick on the left hand side of the box and Niall Sultan's ball to the far post was finished by Greg Daniels for a dramatic winner. Managers Niall McGuinness and Aden Shannon were able to take plenty of positives from a game that could have gone either way. "It was frustrating as we didn’t really get going in the first half, but we thought we deserved a point - if not all 3 - following the second half performance. "On another day if the offside goal we scored stands then we would have won the game. We were also really unlucky to concede at the death. "Key decisions went for them unfortunately. But we are improving and that first win is coming as we are only going to get better as a group."

Offences where an object (or the ball) is thrown In all cases, the referee takes the appropriate disciplinary action: •

reckless – caution the offender for unsporting behaviour

using excessive force – send off the offender for violent conduct

an opponent – an indirect or direct free kick or penalty kick

a team-mate, substitute, substituted or sent-off player, team official or a match official – a direct free kick or penalty kick

All verbal offences are penalised with an indirect free kick. If the referee stops play for an offence committed by a player, inside or outside the field of play, against an outside agent, play is restarted with a dropped ball, unless a free kick is awarded for leaving the field of play without the referee's permission. If, when the ball is in play: •

a player commits an offence against a match official or an opposing player, substitute, substituted or sent-off player, or team official outside the field of play or

a substitute, substituted or sent-off player, or team official commits an offence against, or interferes with, an opposing player or match official outside the field of play,

play is restarted with a free kick on the boundary line nearest to where the offence/interference occurred; for direct free kick offences, a penalty kick is awarded if this is within the offender’s penalty area.

A lot has happened since our last game here at the Viridor Community Stadium with 16 Buildbase FA Vase games and 37 Premier Division games taking place. Somehow we are going to try and summarise these results in these two paragraphs! We rewind way back to Saturday 23rd October 2021, when we were defeated 3-0 at home to Winsford United. Other league games that day saw Macclesfield win by the same scoreline over Padiham with Lower Breck winning 4-1 at Irlam. Also scoring four was Charnock Richard, 4-3 winners over Congleton Town, with Avro winning 2-1 at Litherland REMYCA. That date was also the 1st Round ties in the Buildbase FA Vase. Our conquerers Pilkington had perhaps the best win of all, beating West Allotment Celtic 7-3, with Abbey Hey beating Parkgate 6-0. AFC Liverpool beat Newton Aycliffe 2-1 with Bury AFC winning 2-1 at Sunderland RCW. Holker Old Boys had a fine result, knocking out high flying Skelmersdale United 3-1, with Prestwich Heys winning 4-2 against Penrith. Sandbach United travelled 145 miles to Cambridgeshire to play Eynesbury Rovers, returning with a place in the next round after a 2-1 win. Wythenshawe Town and Burscough were the others through, both needing penalties to progress. Into the midweek and we drew 2-2 at Longridge Town, with Skelmersdale United recording the same scoreline against Winsford United. Barnoldwick Town beat Wythenshawe Town 2-1 with Charnock Richard doing likewise against Squires Gate. The other game saw Prestwich Heys beat AFC Liverpool 1-0. Friday night football returned to the NWCFL on 29th October, with Macclesfield winning 3-1 at Lower Breck. That was in front of 563 supporters, a record gate for Lower Breck. The other game that night was also on Merseyside, with Wythenshawe Town beating AFC Liverpool 3-1. Onto the Saturday, and it was a day to forget for us as we lost 3-0 at Avro. Congleton Town lost by the same scoreline at home to Winsford United, that being their sixth game without a win. Ashton Athletic beat Irlam 2-0, with Longridge Town pulling off a 4-2 away win at Prestwich Heys. Burscough had a good win, 3-2 at Vauxhall Motors, whilst

LATEST ROUND UP WE LOOK AT ALL OF THE RESULTS IN THE PREMIER DIV SINCE OUR LAST HOME GAME Squires Gate held Northwich Victoria 1-1 and Barnoldswick Town drew 2-2 with Skelmersdale United. Midweek brought just one game, Burscough beating Northwich Victoria 2-0. Onto last Saturday and a 2-2 draw for us at Macclesfield. That was the only draw of the day! Northwich beat Ashton 7-1, with Congleton finally winning a game, 3-2 over Lower Breck. Wythenshawe Town beat Avro 1-0. The other five games all ended in away wins. Skelmersdale United's good form continued with a 2-0 win at Padiham, with Charnock Richard beating Irlam 1-0. Barnoldswick won 3-1 at AFC Liverpool with Prestwich winning 2-1 at Burscough. The other game saw Litherland REMYCA claim a 3-1 away win at Longridge Town. Into midweek and Macclesfield bounced back to winning ways with a 2-1 away win at AFC Liverpool. Skelmersdale United won 3-1 at Congleton Town, which sets up today's big top of the table clash as Macc travel to Skem! We were unlucky at Prestwich Heys, equalising in the 90th minute only to conceding a goal two minutes later! Wythenshawe Town won at home again, 4-2 over Charnock Richard, with Burscough and Avro drawing 1-1. On Wednesday, Litherland REMYCA were held to a 2-2 draw by Winsford United, with Northwich Victoria winning 4-1 at Barnoldswick Town. Thursday saw the final midweek game as Lower Breck and Padiham drew 0-0.

WE TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST ON THE 13th NOVEMBER

We have played just four times on this day in the past, the first coming in 1982 when we lost 3-1 at St Benedicts Old Boys. Next was a 5-0 win against Atlantic in 1993, with Ste Stringer (2), Paul Howard, Paul Egerton and Tony Ennis scoring. We drew 1-1 with Cammell Laird in 1999, Stuart Hide scoring, and beat Kydds Athletic 3-0 in 2004. Strangely all four games were in different competitions!

Born on this day in 1850 was Robert Louis Stephenson, who is best known for works such as Treasure Island (published 1883) and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (published 1886). Born in Edinburgh, Stevenson suffered from serious bronchial trouble for much of his life. He continued to write and travel widely despite his poor health, and died in his island home in Samoa at the age of 44.

ON THIS DAY

In 2015, Islamic State operatives carry out a series of coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris, including suicide bombings, mass shootings and a hostage crisis. Three suicide bombers struck outside Stade de France after failing to gain entry to the stadium. Another group then fired on crowded cafés and restaurants before a third group carried out a mass shooting at a rock concert at the Bataclan Theatre.

In 2020 Kylie Minogue made UK chart history when she became the first woman to top the UK album chart over five consecutive decades with the release of Disco. 1988 saw her release Kylie, with her Greatest Hits then coming in 1992. She then changed labels to release Fever in 2001 with 2010 seeing the release of Aphrodite. In total she has released 15 studio albums, as well as 8 live and 13 compilations.

NEXT GAME

Nantwich Res (Away) Today 2.00pm THE WEAVER STADIUM

DEV TEAM IMPROVEMENT! We mentioned in the last home programme that it has been a few weeks since the last game for the Development Team. We are two weeks on from that now with the team playing twice in this period and results seeing a massive improvement. The end of October saw us travel to Moss Farm in Northwich to play Hartford who had lost all of their games this season. In what was a close game, Hartford took the league midway through the half when a shot by Jake Lafferty curled into the top corner. It took until the hour mark for number two, with Mike Whitehead running onto a defence splitting pass to slot home number two. And five minutes later it was three, Whitehead scoring his second. Town responded on 74 minutes when David Bockarie got clear

on the right and crossed for Morgan Gunther to tap home. The following week we hosted Newton Le Willows, and got off to the perfect start by taking a two goal lead through Levi Chiduku. The first saw Levi find the corner after a one-on-one, with Levi grabbing his second minutes later when a deflected shot fell to him just inside 18 yard box and he slotted in the bottom left corner. Newton pulled one back before Lewis Rawsthorne made it 3-1 just before half time with a shot from about 25 yards that dipped over the keeper. The second half saw Town continue to waste good chances and we were punished in spectacular fashion with Newton scoring twice in the last few minutes of the game for the visitors to escape with an unlikely draw.

UNDER 15s TEAM INAUGURAL SEASON WIN STILL ELUDES UNDER 15'S

NEXT GAME

Runcorn Town Under 15s are still looking for their first win of the season but have put in a number of good performances over recent weeks that suggest that first three points is not too far away. Three weeks ago they went down 7-2 at home to Prescot Cables. The Town youngsters had several players unavailable and had to start the game with 10 players.

Pex Hill Pumas Saturday 30th Oct 2021 Merton Primary School 11.00 Kick Off

Town got on the scoresheet nine minutes into the second half when a good through ball found Mackenzie Powell who finished in off the post. The other came late on when Jack McLaughlinLight ran onto a lovely

through ball and rounded the keeper to score. The next game was a 5-2 loss at Blackbrook. Town led on 11 minutes as Mackenzie Powell gave Town the lead. The home side turned it around to lead 3-1 with McLaughlin-Light's throw falling to Luke Littler in the box, his shot deflected in off a defender. Tiredness showed with Blackbrook scoring twice in the last five minutes. Last week saw AFC Knowsley visit and they won 4-2. We took an early lead through Aaron Pimblett before Knowsley turned it around to lead 4-1. Pimblett added a consolation goal late on.

UNDER 16s TEAM TOWN LOOK TO REACH CHESHIRE CUP QUARTERS It's being a very frustrating three weeks for Runcorn Town Under 16s who have not kicked a ball in anger since Sunday 17th October. That saw us win 8-1 to progress into the Last 16 of the Cheshire U16's Boys Cup, and this tie will take place this weekend with the winners taking their place in the Quarter Finals. On 24th October we were meant to play Vulcan away but the home side called off the fxture as they had no management staff available for the game, a new excuse for us that one! The following week on Halloween we had our home game against Parkdale Sidac called off due to a waterlogged pitch at the Heath Park.

Last weekend saw another away game postponed, our fifth successive league game, with our game at Blackbrook getting called off.

NEXT GAME

The reason was once again a waterlogged pitch, but when we offered to switch it to our home pitch at Heath Park, Blackbrook refused. We will look to kick start our league campaign next week when we host Vulcan at home. Before that though, there is a huge game tomorrow here at the Viridor Community Stadium. Brooklands Dragons Lazio are the visitors from the Timperley & District Football League.

Brooklands Dragons Lazio Sunday 14th Oct 2021 Vididor Community Stadium 12.00 Kick Off

They have played just three league games, losing last Sunday 2-1 to AFC Urmson.

The NWCFL have now released the fixtures from Saturday 20th November 2021 until the end of the season, which this season is on Saturday 2nd April 2021. Home games are in white with away games in blue. The fixtures have changed a little since they were first released. At first glance it Q appears that we finish with five away games, but this is because we have brought Q forward games against Winsford United and also Ashton Athletic, in order to get games played before the bad weather hits. It is still the league's intention to play the Macron Cup this year presuming that we get the league season finished on time. This will be as an end of season competition starting in April.

ASHTON VISIT VIRIDOR WE HAVE A RARE WEEK OFF THIS MIDWEEK BEFORE ASHTON ATHLETIC VISIT THE VIRIDOR NEXT SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Next up for Runcorn Town is one of our most frequent opponents since we joined the NWCFL in 2010, with Ashton Athletic the visitors next Saturday afternoon.

Like ourselves, Ashton have had a torrid season so far. They lost their opening six games before a mini run of form where they beat Congleton and Lower Breck, plus drew with Macclesfield.

We first met on Saturday 1st October 2011, Waren Bellew grabbing a hattrick with James McShane getting the other.

They then won just one of their next eight games, that being a 4-2 win at Squires Gate at the end of September.

Since then we have met a whopping 23 times, with Runcorn Town winning 12 ties, Ashton winning seven ties with the other four ties ending in a draw. Wins for us have come in chunks. After the first win, we won the next five as we because something of a bogey side for Ashton. We've also won the last three meetings, including the biggest win of the lot which came on Saturday 24th October 2020 when we won 7-0. Craig Cairns is our leading goalscorer in this fixture, scoring six times for us in nine appearances against Ashton. Kev Exell has scored five times, which is the most against any opponent for him.

42

The middle of October saw another good run with three successive league victories, a run that saw them climb up to 17th in the table, four points above ourselves. They beat Avro 4-0 before beating Padiham 3-2 and Irlam 2-0. Ethan Beckford was the main guy in these fixtures, scoring five of the nine goals, a return that brought him up to 11 goals for the season. He has however just left to join Irlam and he will be a huge loss for them, with Ashton losing their last league game 7-1 at Northwich Vics. Kick off against Ashton is 3.00pm.
