UNIVER-CITY @ UNION LAWN ABPL30042_ LANDSCAPE STUDIO_ URBAN OPEN SPACE
PLANTING REGIME_ // Melbourne University has been described as the ‘garden University’ due to the large population of landscaped areas dotted about the campus therefore the redesign of the Union Lawn area should be in keeping with this aesthetic. It is proposed that as the University of Melbourne is an activity-hub for people from across the globe (international students, their parents, guest lecturers, etc.) Australian native plants are to be planted - Australia has many beautiful native species which should be showcased as part of this redevelopment. The selection of native species is to be confined to those which are indigenous to the area with the over-arching goal of slowly replacing all introduced species within the campus grounds to those which are indigenous. By doing so, it is hoped that we could create a micro-habitat within the inner city of Melbourne which, via plant selection, mimics pre-settlement conditions.

MATERIALITY_
The ridgeline capping to be constructed of sheets of 18mm thick, toughened safety glass with a sandbasted finish allowing warm natural light into the structure whilst offering a distorted view of the sky above. The sandbasted finish was adopted as I wanted to provide as much natural light as possible without compromising on the structure’s overall form.
GLASS RIDGELINE
The supporting and connecting structure of the shelter is to comprise of galvanised steel due to its anticorrosive properties as well as its ready availability. The exposed grain or flecked aesthetic also provides the structure with character. Comprising of curved timber cladding to act as a roof structure, the timber species most suitable was nominated to be Spotted Gum (Eucalyptus Maculata). This species was chosen due to its aesthetic appearance, hardwearing properties, it being native to Australia and its bending properties via steam softening.
STEEL STRUCTURE
Steam softening is used as a method of bending timbers to adhere to curved surfaces, the process comprises of exposing the timber to a temperature close to that of boiling water within a sealed chamber for approximately one hour per 25mm of thickness.
TIMBER CLADDING
Either reclaimed/recycled concrete or bluestone were the materials of choice when considering ground finishes - the reclaimed concrete was considered due to its weathered appearance whilst the bluestone acts to tie the space in with the surrounding buildings and open spaces.
