GOOD BUZZ the health perks of caffeine

If you’re like many adults, caffeine is part of your daily routine. But it doesn’t just help get your morning off to a snappy start or power you through a mid-afternoon slump. It’s good for you too. The latest research offers new insight about the health perks of this potent pick-me-up.

Caffeine is the ultimate power tool.

“Caffeine boosts brain power and memory, makes you feel more vigorous and improves mood,” says Harris R. Lieberman, Ph.D., a research psychologist with the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, Massachusetts. Caffeine blocks the action of adenosine, an organic compound that promotes sleep, to stimulate brain cells to fire up. Blood levels of caffeine peak about 30 to 45 minutes after you’ve consumed it. But don’t gulp down two cups first thing to turbocharge your day. A study Lieberman led involving U.S. Navy Seals found that an average of 300 mg of caffeine (equivalent to three cups of coffee or four cups of tea) consumed throughout the day is optimal for most people for peak mental and physical performance.

Coffee cuts endometrial cancer risk.

Downing daily cups of coffee can reduce the risk of endometrial cancer, the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs.

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found that women who drank three to four daily cups of java reduced their risk of endometrial cancer by 29 percent compared to women who drank little or no coffee. Drink think: Coffee contains chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant that may prevent DNA damage. Its caffeine and other bioactive compounds may alter the levels of estrogen, insulin, C-peptide, and other hormones to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Be careful how you take your coffee though. Adding sugar and cream could contribute to weight gain and insulin resistance. Keeping your weight in check and exercising regularly are the most powerful ways to prevent endometrial cancer.

That cup of joe won’t make you go.

Women with urinary incontinence (UI) — the strong, sudden urge to go when you may not be anywhere near a bathroom — have long been told to avoid coffee and other caffeinated foods and beverages. It was thought that caffeine, a diuretic, may irritate the bladder and make things worse. But a recent study shows that caffeine isn’t the culprit once thought. Researchers analyzed food questionnaire data from the Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II from 21,564 women with moderate UI — who leaked urine one to three times per month — over two years.

They found that caffeine didn’t cause more problems. Whether women routinely drank just one cup of coffee daily or downed four or more cups, those who kept up their caffeine habit didn’t experience more bouts of UI over time.

In women whose symptoms had gotten worse, there was no link to caffeine. If you’ve got UI, there’s no need to give up caffeine to manage the condition.

Coffee helps derail diabetes.

The pooled results of 18 studies involving over 450,000 people found that each daily cup of coffee consumed is associated with a 7 percent lower risk of diabetes. Follow-up studies show that coffee may reduce inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity. But again, don’t OD on the stuff. Some studies link coffee consumption — more than three cups of coffee per day — with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

Coffee won’t weaken your bones.

Although a teeny bit of calcium does leach from your bones when you drink full-strength Java, it’s not enough to be harmful, even if you drink a lot of coffee. Still, if you want to make up the difference, pour in one to two tablespoons of skim milk or have a skim latte(half steamed skim milk, half coffee) instead.

Baume & Mercier taps Shelby Cobra Coupe Designer For Timepiece Collection Automotive designer Peter Brock is famous in the world of motor sports for designing the legendary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, the most iconic car in American motorsport.

The former General Motors car designer was tapped by Caroll Shelby in 1964 to help him build a faster race car body. “Caroll’s plan was to take his cars to Europe and race them against Aston Martins and Ferraris,” says Brock, “but they had to go a lot faster.

The problem was, if you tried to double the speed by increasing the hp, the drag on the car would increase exponentially, and slow it

change the body shape.”

Brock’s solution was based on what was then a radical

theory: that chopping off the back end of the car would substantially reduce drag. His inspiration was a study he’d found on aerodynamics by a Dr. Wunibald Kamm in Germany in the 1930s. He couldn’t read the text, but he understood the drawings, which went against everything car designers at the time thought they knew about airflow. “Everyone thought it wouldn’t work,” he says. “They still believed cars should be designed as they were in the 1930s, in an elegant, tear-drop shape, with a long tapered tail, and at very low speeds, that worked okay. But that shape was originally designed for zeppelins in the 1920s, which are very long. My premise was that if you chopped off the end of the car to reduce downflow and kept the roof fairly square, it would be more efficient. Doing that made it visually look heavy, though, so we made the big window on the back and painted the rest in two halves, which lightened the car visually.”

ollie Bonneville Barden, the new creative director of John Hardy, had a tough act to follow when she took over the design direction of the company just over a year ago. The John Hardy jewelry company has a very specific back story, which defines the brand in a way that is unique to the jewelry industry and central to the collection. One year into her task, Hollie has breathed new life into the line, and the resulting look is powerful, dramatic, and inspiring.

John Hardy, an artist and environmentalist, visited Bali for the first time in the 1970s and was instantly captivated and inspired by the natural beauty of Indonesia. He also fell in love with the jewelry tradition in this exotic land when he encountered local artisans producing handcrafted pieces using jewelry-making techniques honed by their ancestors.

Hardy began to study ancient jewelry craftsmanship and began working with local artisans. By infusing their ancient techniques with modern ingenuity, he created his eponymous jewelry brand in 1975.

The designs have always been heavily influenced by the culture and mythology of Bali, including reference to the Naga, a mythical creature of the volcano, with a

“I WAS INSPIRED BY THE DEPTH OF THE NAGA STORY AND WANTED TO DIVE INTO THE HERITAGE IN AN ARTISTIC WAY.” serpent’s body and a dragon-like head. Naga was inspired by a mythical water dragon that loves and protects the ocean’s pearl. As legend has it, the water dragon would fly down into the water every night and show its love for the pearl. When dawn arrives, it returns to its volcano to protect the village, shedding the ocean water from its wings over the crops of the land along the way. The Naga should be worn facing inward to be bestowed with love and abundance, and outward for protection.

The Naga is depicted in the collection’s rings and bracelets with ornate scales embellished with diamonds and precious stones. “The way I approached redesigning Naga for my first collection was to seek out the different representations of Naga throughout Bali,” says Hollie. “When I first arrived, I didn’t go to the archives to research the Naga. Instead, I started my research by going back to the Balinese impression and expression of Naga as seen all over the island. It is often sculptural, carved from stone and wood. I was inspired by the depth of the Naga story and wanted to dive into the heritage in an artistic way.” The result is a collection that is more representative of the creature as a symbol of nature in general.

The Naga’s blue sapphire eyes bring the spirit of the sky and ocean to life, and scrolllike engravings represent the waves of the sea. Shapes in the bracelet links resemble leaves. “The historical celebration of the raw power and symbolism of Naga formed the overarching concept for the season,” she says.

The Bamboo collection, long a symbol of Asian culture, was also revived under Hollie’s guidance, with a more layered look and two-tone designs. It has long been a policy that for each bamboo piece sold, John Hardy plants at least one bamboo seedling. The amount of seedlings planted for each jewelry item is directly correlated to the amount of labor that goes into making it, which is artistically marked on the interior of each piece. To date, the brand has planted over a million bamboo plants throughout the island of Bali, helping to sustain the lifestyle of the locals. The bamboo protects the environment in a variety of ways, including aiding the soil’s natural water retention.

Hollie has also added more color to the collections this year.

“I selected all the stones not just for their suggestion of power, drama, and the way they play with light and color — but for the power of creation represented in the stones. I wanted to show nature’s strength through creation,” she says. The collections incorporate silver sheen obsidian, blue and black sapphire, garnet, and emerald. “As we modernize and elevate our collections, adding more gemstones was a natural next step,” she says. “To balance out the boldness of the black sapphire, I wanted to develop a soft, recurring theme throughout my designs, so I decided to ultimately adjust the eyes of the Naga dragon from our Legends collection from ruby to blue sapphire. I felt the blue added a softer, more feminine and approachable look to the dragon.”

Maybe you’ve heard that you need less sleep as you get older?

Reality check: That’s just wishful thinking. The need for sleep doesn’t diminish over the years. You still require the same amount you did when you were 25 or 30 years old — at least 7 hours a night.

Still, if you’re in perimenopause or menopause, dream on.

“Many women don’t get the sleep they need at that stage of life,” says Carmel Harrington, PhD, a sleep researcher and author of The Complete Guide to a Goodnight’s Sleep.

In perimenopause, sleep tends to become more fragmented due to diminishing levels of progesterone and estrogen. Progesterone makes us sleepy, and the rapid fluctuations in estrogen cause temperature changes that can disturb sleep.

At menopause, which is defined as missing your period consecutively for a year at around age 51 (though it can happen anywhere from 30 to 59), hot flashes can wreak havoc on the sleep cycle. During a hot flash, your brain gets a rush of adrenaline, which makes you more alert. And, of course, you may be drenched intermittently during the night, which can mean getting up and changing your clothes.

About one in 50 women will also develop sleep apnea around menopause due to the natural loss of estrogen and progesterone, which help keep the airways open and responsive, Dr. Harrington says. The sleep disorder causes tissue in the esophagus to momentarily obstruct your airway, causing breathing to stop — sometimes briefly, sometimes for 10 seconds or longer up to 30 times an hour.

When your oxygen levels plummet, you wake up, but perhaps not sufficiently to realize what has happened. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.

Other common sleep stealers in midlife include pain from arthritis, heartburn/GERD, low back pain, and medications with side effects that interfere with sleep as well as restless leg syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD). In RLS, unpleasant creeping, crawling, and tingling sensations produce the irresistible urge to move the legs, especially at night when you’re lying down waiting to fall asleep. PLMD involves involuntarily kicking several times a night that causes you to hover in lighter stages or wake up. “The majority of patients with RLS also have PLMD,” says neurologist Andrew L. Chesson, M.D., Jr.

Wake-Up Call The upshot is chronic sleep deprivation. The latest studies link being consistently sleep deprived an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, depression, stroke, heart attack, overweight and memory and attention problems. Moreover, without adequate zzzs, you may as well say good night to performing several work tasks concurrently, absorbing new information, or making sound judgment calls, especially in a crisis. All told, “Anything that’s not routine becomes difficult if you’re tired,” says sleep researcher Andrew Monjan, PhD. If symptoms of RLS or PLMD last more than a month and interfere with the way you feel and function during the day, your bed partner says you snore or you often don’t feel refreshed during the day even though you swear you got a full night’s sleep, see your doctor. The solution may be as simple as switching to a medication that doesn’t cause sleeplessness or treating a medical condition that does. For more complex problems, your doctor may recommend a sleep specialist at an accredited sleep center.

Read on to learn what else you can do to spend less time counting sheep, and more time getting the best possible night’s rest at this stage of the game.

Wear yourself out.

“Exercise helps you sleep longer and fall asleep faster,” says Abby King, Ph.D., of Stanford University School of Medicine in California. King lead a study on the relationship between exercise and sleep that randomly assigned 43 men and women over age 50 to exercise moderately (such as a brisk walk before dinner) for 30 to 40 minutes four days a week or to do nothing for four months. At the end of that time, she found that those who exercised generally slept an hour longer each night and also could fall asleep more quickly.

Dr. Harrington also recommends doing downward facing dogs and taking a few deep, cleansing breaths before bed. “Relaxation exercises like yoga can reduce the chance you’ll have stressful thoughts during sleep that can raise your body temperature to cause a hot flash,” she says.

Designate a daily dark period.

Invest in room-darkening bedroom shades that block moonlight and street lights. Darkness helps the brain produce melatonin, a hormone that helps you fall asleep. “As much we need light during the day, we need darkness at night,” says Sonia Ancoli-Israel, Ph.D., a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine director. Turn off all electronic devices an hour before bed too. “The brain’s not smart enough to distinguish between the light of a computer and sunlight,” Dr. Harrington says. If you get up during the night to go to the bathroom, use a nightlight to show the way rather than turning on a bright overhead light.

Consider hormone help.

When it comes to sleep, estrogen is a good thing for women. It helps you fall sleep faster and stay asleep longer. It enhances rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep, the stage during which dreaming occurs. Without adequate REM sleep, you’re apt to feel groggy and have difficulty concentrating.

It also affects memory and learning ability. Supplemental estrogen isn’t recommended, however, if you have a history of cancer, stroke or heart attack, so talk to your doctor. If you’re prescribed hormone therapy, be sure to check back with your doctor every three to six months to make sure you still need it. To go off hormone therapy, work with your doctor to taper off the medication. “The current thinking is that hormone therapy is safe if taken for a short time in low doses,” says Mary Jane Minkin, MD, a gynecologist and co-author of A Woman’s Guide to Menopause and Perimenopause.

Wind down with a hot bath or shower.

Your body naturally experiences a slight drop in core temperature right before sleep, which helps induce slumber. Taking a warm bath or shower right before bed, even in the summer, can help coax the process along.

Hot water raises your body temperature. “When you get out of a warm bath or shower, your body will need to cool off, which helps initiate sleep onset,” says Terry Cralle, a registered nurse, certified clinical and sleep educator, and national sleep consultant says. As your body temperature falls by as little as a degree, you’ll feel sleepier so you’ll be primed to hit the sack. Conversely, a cold bath or shower doesn’t achieve the same cooling effect, she adds.

Chill out.

Temperature and sleep quality are closely related. “Sleeping in a cool room is really important,” Dr. Harrington says. The ideal sleeping temperature is 68 degrees, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. In cooler months, keep your thermostat on the cooler side. In the summer months, if you don’t have AC, no sweat. Pairing a window fan with a room fan can keep warm air circulating, enabling the window

San Francisco–based stylist and personal shopper Amy Roseveare recalls a client who loads up on organic finishes because of her coloring. “She’s an autumn [season color palette] — really curly red hair and loves sweaters — so stacks of wooden bangles look perfect on her,” says the stylist. She advises, when layering with watches, to consider weight.

Roseveare wears just one heavier bracelet above a pre-owned Cartier Roadster (a men’s watch), unlike her Franck Muller. “It’s much lighter so I can stack delicate bracelets with it,” she says. Beth Bernstein, a New York City–based author, antique jewelry expert, and editor of Bejeweledmag.com, wears softer and tighter (think leather) bracelets and bangles that hang below watches so as not to scratch crystals. “I have a Cartier Love bracelet that doesn’t roll over my watch,” she says. A general rule: Never layer more than two parts of your body at a time. Roseveare’s advice? Experiment, because no look is permanent. “It’s not like getting a tattoo,” she says.

The most important thing to remember is that not everything has to match. Proper necklace layering begins with a focal point, like a favorite pendant. Build around it with pieces that have two-inch differences in length, and vary chain weights to avoid tangles. Consider asymmetric touches like decorative clasps visible on chains, and mixes of shapes and motifs. “Go too symmetrical and you look too studied,” explains Bernstein.

Mixing modern and antique styles helps a winter like Bernstein wear textured jewels well. The satin patina of vintage pieces complement hammered finishes and shinier styles when proportions are otherwise harmonious. “I even like three different textures in one necklace — it doesn’t look planned,” says Bernstein.

For ring stacks, go with what’s comfortable. Bernstein’s favorite: multiple bands and a signet pinky ring on one hand and a lone intaglio number on the other. Some of Roseveare’s clients find wearing three rings to be a stretch, while others can don up to eight without issue. “It’s completely about personal style,” she says.

According to the International Colored Gemstone Association, an emerald in a deep, lively green still has a much higher value than an almost flawless emerald whose color is paler. Emeralds are extremely rare. It is seldom that a large specimen with good color and good transparency is found. That is why fine emeralds are so valuable. Both rubies and emeralds look their best in large sizes.

All gemstones are precious, and there are many exceptions to the big-three rule. Many rare finds among what we used to call semi-precious gems can be priced higher than some rubies, sapphires, or emeralds. But in general, a piece of well-made fine jewelry set with a high-quality ruby, sapphire, or emerald will hold its value and command a higher price than other gemstones.

Personally speaking, I have had a newfound respect and appreciation for my wife, and all women, after our first child was born and watching her throughout her pregnancies. After my son was born, I had a T. Jazelle baby feet bracelet, made in his amethyst birthstone, waiting for her in my hospital bag. This was an inexpensive gesture, but something she will cherish forever. That Mother’s Day, I presented her with a new ring, inscribed with his name and birth date, in which I most recently added an inscription with the birth of our daughter.

My sister, Leslie (see page 9), wears a beautiful ring that features both of her daughters’ birthstones, custom-made by Tacori. Each one of us wears necklaces with our children’s fingerprints, initials, birthstones, or some combination of the three, hanging close to our hearts. My wife will tell you, out of all her jewelry, it’s the family jewelry that is her favorite.

One last tidbit. My sister was recently given one of our grandmother’s gold charms, which has a birthstone to represent each of her four children and reads “4 reasons for happiness”. My sister is going to hold onto this and hand it down to one of her girls someday. THIS is what celebrating family is all about.
