A channel is being excavated next to Avelingen industrial site to give the river BovenMerwede more space during high water and to improve the water safety at Gorinchem.

To prevent the channel from flooding continuously, a bar is being created under the bridge. This will also help reinforce the bridge's pillars and prevent the passage of sailing vessels.
