Chuck wagons, space jumps make NM history By Eugene Heathman Editor eugene@ruidosofreepress.com While leather-faced cowboys and stocky pioneer women were rustling up record amounts of fried chicken, biscuits and gravy from 1800s-era chuck wagons during the 23rd annual Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso Downs, Felix Baumgartner made an epic record-breaking jump from the edge of space over Roswell, once again placing New Mexico at the forefront of aerospace history. Daredevil skydiver Felix Baumgartner lifted off in ideal weather conditions from the airport in Roswell Sunday with the assistance of the Red Bull Stratos team, a project five years in the making, and on the anniversary of Chuck Yeager’s accomplishment of breaking the sound barrier. Baumgartner stepped from his near-space capsule from an altitude of 128,100 ft. or about 24.5 miles above the Earth’s surface, breaking the speed of sound in the process. Baumgartner is the first free-falling human to break the sound barrier without the use of an airplane, spacecraft or land vehicle. Baumgartner hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph, based on preliminary data. Baumgartner also collected a world record highest manned balloon flight; he failed to break Kittinger’s 5 minute and 35 second longest free fall record. Baumgartner’s was timed at four minutes see NM HistorY, pg 3

Campaign signs become targets of vandals By Eugene Heathman Editor eugene@ruidosofreepress.com As election day nears, campaigns step up the pace to get those undecided voters on their side. Supporters of candidates escalate door-to-campaigns, robo-calls and email blasts but now in Ruidoso, vandalism of campaign signs. Lincoln County Undersheriff Robert Shepperd, also candidate for sheriff, running against write-in candidate Walter Seidel, Jr. filed a police report in Ruidoso claiming his campaign signs are being unjustly vandalized. The suspected vandalism is in the form of non-removable stickers citing code violations being placed over his name on many signs throughout the village. Village code enforcement reported they had not placed the stickers and upon further in-

Campaign signs for the upcoming election seem to be everywhere but are being targeted by vandals spection, the fraudulent stickers were marked ‘For UPS Shipping Only’ and printed with a font different from what is used by the village. “I clearly understand and appreciate good spirited competition but vandalizing signs is quite
unnecessary,” Shepperd said. Ruidoso Police are investigating the alleged property damage as a result of the complaint and anyone caught vandalizing the signs or destruction of property may face criminal charges.
Secretary of State slashes election bond legal notices New Mexico Press Association
This serves as notice to let the public know the status of the amendment and general bond obligation legal notices placed through the office of the Secretary of State. The Ruidoso Free Press will not be receiving these notices by decision of the Secretary. The New Mexico Press Association is very disappointed in this decision and is continuing to make arguments on your behalf. We (NMPA) have had several discussions with their office last week. In addition to cutting newspapers from the list, the Secretary of State have chosen to leave Spanish readers in the majority of the state in the dark by running Spanish versions of the ad in only four newspapers. No papers in the southern part of the state will receive the Spanish translation. This has been done for budgetary reasons and comes at the cost of local readers who will now see these items for the
first time on a ballot instead of the local newspaper. “As we have in the past all newspapers were presented via an estimate to the Secretary of State. In counties where there are multiple newspapers the Secretary has selected only one option. This leaves out large portions of the voting public and does not, in our opinion, follow the intention of the statue, which is to have an informed citizenry and that the contents of the notice may be brought home to the public generally, “said Philip Lucey, executive director, NMPA. The Secretary of State’s office has been advised that they are following the letter of the law as it states the notices must be published in at least one newspaper in every county in English and Spanish when newspapers in both of said languages are published. Editor’s note: In lieu of this dis-
