Basketball starts for county rivals By Todd Fuqua Sports Editor todd@ruidosofreepress.com CAPITAN – Basketball got off to a roaring start for Capitan and Hondo Monday, as the Eagles used some deadly outside shooting to offset the Tigers’ inside game and come away with a 62-54 victory. The game was the nightcap of a doubleheader that started with the Capitan girls earning a 42-24 victory. Monday’s doubleheader was a makeup from Thursday, when the two schools were originally supposed to meet. The Capitan boys also had a game at New Mexico Military Institute canceled due to the snow and winter weather, so everyone was itching to get their seasons underway. Those long delays led to some slow starts by every team, although the Capitan boys started slower than Hondo. Capitan opened the scoring on a free throw by Kaleb Cleckler, but the Eagles rattled off an 8-2 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Hondo did all its damage from outside, pouring in 11 three-pointers in the game, led

Holland. “We played hard on the defensive end, and if we do that, our defense becomes our offense.” Countering this shooting threat was the 1-2 inside punch of Tiger centers Cleckler and Jake Lamay. Saturday’s WBA welterweight title fight between Austin Trout and Esrilandy Lara was defined by one thing – someone had kidnapped Trout and replaced him with an imposter in the ring. Trout – coming off his first profesOn sional loss when the he lost the WBA title to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in April – changed Todd Fuqua his approach to the Cuban Lara, a southpaw and technician in the ring like he is. Instead of standing straight and letting his opponent come to him, Trout went in low and took the offensive. That’s not something he’s used to. That was evident when Lara landed several more punches and even knocked trout to the match in the 11th round. It all added up to a unanimous decision for Lara and the second straight loss for Trout. Trainer Louie Burke had stated he’d been working to change Trout from the patient counterpuncher to a prowler – mainly in the wake of his loss to Alvarez, in which he had to make a comeback after hitting the mat in the seventh round. But that’s not what Trout is, and that’s why he ended up on the wrong side of the judges’ cards on Saturday night. To me, though, his masquerade went beyond the ring. I read with interest the war of words between Lara and Trout, in which Lara stated Trout would bring “nothing but talk” to the ring, while Trout countered that his opponent lacked the “heart and will” to win. I’ve been fortunate enough to speak with Trout on a few occasions, and he’s always struck me
