Tips & Tricks for Teaching this Population

Here are some tips and tricks for teaching older adults!

Slow Down & Speak Up

The biggest tip for our Fellows is to slow down, speak up, and enunciate Some of our residents have hearing impairments and slowing down will ensure they retain the class information.

Add Interactive Elements

Our most popular classes have interactive elements like videos, music, experiments, and props. These elements draw in our residents and keep them engaged. The residents also love a take away so we suggest bringing in a handout or fact sheet.

Social Wellness

RUI University not only supports intellectual wellbeing but social wellness. Adding in discussion questions or personal stories can help our residents engage with each other and you.

Residents May Leave

You might see a resident get up and leave during your presentation. Do not fret! Many residents have to leave to take medication or use the restroom. Do not let it distract from your lecture or shake your confidence.

"I love RUI University! I’ve always been drawn to older adults. My grandparents were very influential in my life and as a musical performer I love the subject matter too. When I teach the class I feel so good!"

Wisteria Perry

-Mariners Museum

Lifelong Learning is important to me because it provides me with a continual opportunity to always be learning something new It helps increase my own personal knowledge, it feeds my current passions and inspires new ones, and makes me feel that I am becoming a better person every single time As an RUIU Fellow, it allows me to share with others I hope I can inspires others to start or continue their own journeys as well”

Dr. James Baer

-Northern Virginia Community College

"The best part about teaching at RUIU is getting to know the residents. They are the teachers as much as I am because their life experiences bring history alive for all of us In one of my classes I was speaking about the history of Puerto Rico, and one of the residents was from Puerto Rico She could fill in additional information for the class. Being able to share knowledge from residents' rich lives."
