Good afternoon everyone, and welcome

to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium for this afternoon’s game against Frickley,

in, and did a great job at the back.

It was a much more even game than

with whom we managed a draw late-on in

we’ve seen of late, and we matched

place back in September. I’d like to extend

keeps improving match upon match, I’m

the season after getting beaten 4-2 at their a warm Rammy welcome to our match

officials as well as the players, management and officials of Frickley - I hope you

enjoy your visit today, and have a safe journey home.

Wednesday night saw us finally get

Whitby throughout. While this squad

not worried. It’s when the improvements

stop that we will need to have a sit down and think about what needs doing - it is still very much a work in progress, but all the progress is positive.

Our supporters have, on the whole,

some points on the board with yet another

squad of very good players now, and I’m

ourselves in with a brand-new squad, but

improved performance. We have a quality

happy that we are making massive strides each time we play. Many of the clubs

jon robinson

Kyle Harrop and Andy Fitzgerald stepped

we’re facing have had a season or two for

the majority of their team to gel, whereas we’ve only had pre-season, and even then

we were trying out lots of players to decide which squad to take into the season. Pre-

season games against teams such as Clitheroe and Colne, or even Burnley and

Bolton, are little use, as the standard of football we face in the Evostik Premier is completely different. Whether we like it or

not, the gelling begins for real with that first kick of the new season.

The signing of Max Harrop has been a

great coup for us as, although he’s a

young player, he has stacks of experience, and is just the kind of creative personality

we need to link the increasingly effective midfield with Gassy up front. We’ve been

moving the ball around in defence, and

midfield, which is how I would like us to

play, but we haven’t been making nearly

enough in-roads in the final third. Max

gives us that penetration and, as we saw on Wednesday, is even managing to tuck the ball away himself.

standing of the situation we’ve found a couple of people have been doing quite

a bit of damage to squad morale, both on

the touchline and elsewhere. There are

one or two players in the squad who are

struggling to get their heads together, much like Donal McDermott last season

who has now gone on to bigger and better things at Rochdale. These players need

our support, not our criticism, and I’ve

been very disappointed at how quickly

people have come out with all guns blazing, whether it is pointing out certain

players or certain positions that they feel

are letting us down. Players such as

Dominic McHale have enormous potential, if they manage to find their confidence, and they will only do that with support from everyone at the club. Calling players lazy

will never help that confidence! There is also the issue that posts on our club forum

act as helpful scouting reports for other clubs. We had Frickley watched in the

week, but imagine our disappointment when our own forum has a more detailed

scouting report on us than anyone would get through visiting the match!

And so I ask that you remain patient, and

Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium to everyone connected with Frickley Athletic, and, of course, today’s match officials. I hope you all enjoy your brief visit to Ramsbottom.

NOT QUITE THE START This is certainly a testing time for everyone at the HWRS, but we must all keep the faith. We’ve enjoyed amazing success for the best part of six years, but football is not all about winning, and sometimes we have to accept that times can be tough. Good grief, ask those wonderfully noisy fans of Hyde United how they have felt for the last two years. Three wins in two seasons would just about test anyone’s dedication, but they are now coming through, albeit a couple of divisions lower.

LACK OF AMBITION? I wonder though, if despite this drop in status, anyone would accuse Hyde United of lacking ambition? I ask the question because I am fully aware that such accusations have been made recently about Ramsbottom United. Now hang about. Weren’t we a middle-of-the-table North West Counties League side not too long ago? Now here we are in Evo-Stik Premier. Doesn’t sound like a lack of ambition to me! Ambition though, has to be tempered by reality. Yes, we could move up into National League North. On the playing side, Curzon Ashton have proved that it is possible. They do however have a ground superior to ours and with virtually nothing required to move up. We would need to implement a number of further changes. Those

would be done however, as all previous requirements to move up the leagues have also been carried out. Compared with Curzon, our fans base is much larger, so that would help sustain the increase costs involved with a further move up the pyramid. Off the field, however, there is still many ways we can improve the club. Harry continues to work harder than any Chairman I know, and try as he may, he can’t continue without additional help. Fortunately over the summer months, many supporters willingly gave up their time, and everyone here was more than grateful. But throughout the year, many jobs have to be done behind the scenes that most people just do not see. So to consolidate ambition, more help is needed in making the club more professional. We know of the other areas that need looking at. Sponsorship could and should be improved. Our catering is being looked at. Publicity needs further expansion. As a club we recognise all this, and in some ways, our rapid progress has left us falling a little behind off the pitch. But accusations of lack of ambition are way out of order. We all want Ramsbottom United to compete at the highest level it can achieve. I don’t know what level that is. All I know is that with each promo-

Frickley Main Programme_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 09:59 Page 5

tion come new challenges as well as new adventures. Fleetwood, as a town, is not much bigger than Ramsbottom, and it certainly hasn’t got our catchment area, but look at what they have achieved. OK, so they have a multi-millionaire businessman behind them, and maybe they are the exception, but football can be a fickle friend. Clubs have risen to the summit only to disappear back down again. Conference Premier killed off Leigh RMI, Farsley Celtic, Hereford United, Salisbury City, and no doubt one or two more. It also had serious consequences for the likes of Droylsden,

Chairman, groundsman, turnstile operator, kitman, treasurer, bottle-washer, maintenance man, pie and peas chef, painter and decorator, grass cutter and divotter - Harry Williams

Leek Town, Stafford Rangers and many more, as the financial requirements were way above those clubs abilities. The one thing you can be sure of here in Ramsbottom is that whilst Harry is in charge of the pursestrings, this club will never gamble it’s future on short-term success. Everything that has happened over the last 50 years to see this club climb to it’s present position has been done with much fore-thought. That certainly does not, for me, represent a lack of ambition. Far from it.

The intelligent reading of the game, the leisurely lope, and the strange hair-band thing could lead even the uninitiated to suspect that Rammy are now fielding two Harrop brothers... and they’d be spot on, as Kyle’s younger brother Max joined the club, virtually out of the blue, last week, making his debut in the game against Hyde. After Saturday’s match we grabbed Max for a quick chat, and asked him first of all how he came to join Rammy. “Things weren’t really working out at Ashton United early-doors in the new season, so I had a quick chat with Kyle to see if Rammy might be interested in giving me a go, and so here I am! All I want to do is play games and get myself fully match fit - you can’t do that if you’re not getting out and playing regularly. I wasn’t making the squad at Ashton, possibly because I spent a good proportion of the pre-season away with work, and I knew that Rammy were perhaps a bit light on attacking/creative midfielders, so it made sense for me. “Number 10 is my position really. I’ve always been comfortable and confident on the ball, and I can always find the pass. I’m not afraid to have a go at goal too, which I hope will help.” It’s quite a tough time to come in to Rammy, with a team lying bottom of the table, and a few of the fans starting to have a go at the team and at the management. We asked what the atmosphere is like in the dressing room, and whether the pressure is starting to tell a little bit. “No, not at all. It’s very early for a brand new squad to start to click, particularly one which is trying to

play decent football, and we all know that it’s a long, long season and things can change very quickly. We just have to keep working hard, and stay as a team. We’ve got some real quality players here that I know from elsewhere, like Alex Meaney who’s real class in the middle, and Pughie who I know from my time at Bury. Pugh was another reason I was quite excited about joining Rammy - we’re good mates and have always had a good laugh together. “The changing room is brilliant. Noone’s getting on each others’ backs or anything like that. When you get new players in any team, even one as big as United, you end up with difficulties. Everyone just has to remember that it’s a work in progress and that we all need to be patient. Let us do our bit behind the scenes at training and get our act together to put on a show on Saturday. Hopefully things will get better quickly.” Max started out at Liverpool aged 12 before Bury picked him up at around 14, and it was Bury where he remained right through the youth ranks, winning two awards for ‘Most Promising Newcomer’ and ‘Youth Team Player of the Season’ shortly before a change of management saw Kevin Blackwell take charge and show Max, and a number of other promising youngsters, the door. From Bury he moved to Nantwich in December 2012, where he remained until the last few games of last season, moving over to Ashton United. That transfer meant he ended up facing Rammy with both clubs, including both of the defeats against Ashton, and the 4-1 thumping we received from Nantwich in only our second home game.

We asked how it feels to have another footballer in the household growing up, and whether it was a good or bad thing. “Me and Kyle have always been really, really close. I’m the youngest of three brothers, though we have a little sister too, and me and Kyle have always been the closest, mainly because of football - our other brother doesn’t play. I’d say that Kyle is my best mate, though amazingly this is only the second time I’ve ever played on the same team as him, and I’ve not much played against him - mainly because he’s always been in nonleague and I’ve been playing football league. “He’s always been really supportive though, and is there to give advice when I need it. Last season I got a red card in a game, which was really hard for me to take, but he’s always there when I need a bit of advice and help, saying ‘do this’ or ‘do that’, and it feels like you’re sharing problems.”

Most Rammy fans will recall Kyle Harrop receiving his marching orders last season, when he told the referee what he thought of his ignorance, in no uncertain terms. Max also admits that getting at referees and caring too much about decisions that have already been made has been a weakness of his, and something he’s been working on. “It sometimes winds me up when you see referees make a really appalling decision that affects the game, and it stops me keeping focus on my game and my performance. It’s not normally other people that wind me up though, I tend to wind myself up when I’m not doing so well, and get on my own back. I think a lot of players are like that, which is why it’s never good if the fans get on your back as well. I always want to put in the best performance and make the best pass, so I’ll have a go at myself if something doesn’t come off or if I have a bad game. I just need to get

Frickley Main Programme_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 09:59 Page 9

that out of my game and really concentrate on the positives - that confidence really improves your performance.” Max started out at a club called ‘North End Boys’, which one of his friend’s dads set up and ran. The team of talented youngsters set their league alight, winning four league titles and countless other trophies, and this is how Liverpool and then Bury first came across Max, who was playing up front and was regularly top goal-scorer. At Bury he pulled back into midfield, with a short spell at full-back before finally making his debut for the Shakers in the middle, coming on as sub in a really tough game away at Port Vale. “It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, aged 17, coming on to play in a team that was down to ten men, trying to hold on for the last 20 minutes to get a 1-1 draw. “After that I made my full debut against Crewe the next week, in the Johnson’s Paint Trophy, before spending most of the season coming on as sub. I had been in the first-team squad for a whole season before that, from turning 16, but didn’t get any match time at first. It was a bit frustrating, but when you’re 16 it’s a real buzz being involved with the first team - what other 16-year-old lad would be unhappy travelling all over the country as a professional foot-

baller, seeing so much at such a young age? Personally I think I’ve had a lot of experiences in football, and had a lot of ups and downs and I know what it takes to get yourself up, and get back on the rails if things don’t work out so well. In all honesty though, I had the time of my life at Bury.” “The move from league to nonleague is where I really discovered a love for the game that no professional ever has, where you get to play every week because you want to be there, and you give everything for your team. That’s something I never fully experienced at Bury, and is what’s really surprised me with the move across to non-league. All of these lads at Rammy give up so much to play football and to play for this team. It’s a great honour to be able to pull on the blue shirt of Rammy and get out there playing. I only hope I can do everyone proud at my new club.”

six to watch

Sebastian Malkowski (Goalkeeper) Age: 28 Previous Clubs; Wisla Tczew, Olimpia Sztum, Lechia Gdansk, Bytovia Bytow & Zawisza Bydgoszcz. The Polish shot-stopper signed from Zawisza Bydgoszcz during the summer and impressed the management team during pre-season. The giant goalkeeper has spent his entire career playing in his homeland and comes to Frickley as a full Poland international, having earned one cap against Lithuania back in 2011. Standing at just over 6ft 4ins Malkowski is sure to be an imposing figure in ‘The Blues’ backline.

Luke Jeffs (Defender) Age: 32 Previous Clubs; Goole AFC Jeffs followed the management team when they left Goole Town AFC to join ‘The Blues’ in the summer of 2012. In his time at Goole, the experienced defender made over 200 appearances. Luke has now made over 100 appearances for Frickley Athletic and he will surely be hoping that he can add more stability and insert his influence on a defence that struggled to keep clean sheets last year. Simon Lenighan (Midfield) Age: 21 Previous Clubs; Leeds United, Bradford PA, FC Halifax Town, Harrogate Town & Alfreton Town. This exciting midfielder started his career in the junior ranks at Leeds United. During his time at the Yorkshire club he spent time on loan at

both Bradford Park Avenue and FC Halifax. On his release by Leeds he joined Harrogate Town over the summer of 2014, but was unable to cement a first team place. In order to gain regular football he spent the remainder of last season at Alfreton Town. On his release he was quickly snapped up by the Frickley management. Lenighan’s main position is as a ball winner in the middle of the park, but he is also more than capable of adding attacking options.

Luke Hinsley (Striker) Age: 25 Previous Clubs; Goole AFC, Yorkshire Main & Harrogate Railway. Hinsley returned to the Westfield Lane Stadium in October 2014 for his second spell at the club. After playing for Goole AFC and Yorkshire Main he originally signed for Frickley from Harrogate Railway in the summer of 2012. His two year stay was ended once the 2013/14 league campaign had finished and he moved back to his first club Goole Town AFC. This was to last only a matter of months as he returned to Frickley in the early part of last season. Luke’s versatility is key to ‘The Blues’ as he is not only able to play up front as a striker, but he can also operate both out wide or in midfield.

Zeph Thomas

Frickley Main Programme_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 10:00 Page 15

Zeph Thomas (Striker) Age: 25 Previous Clubs; Rotherham United, Ilkeston, Emley, Harrogate Town, Cowdenbeath, Mickleover Sports, Goole AFC & Boston United. This former Rotherham United Youth team player has turned out for a number of clubs in the non-league pyramid. After playing for semi-professional clubs in the United states he turned professional at Belgian club Montegnee before he spent time in the Scottish First Division with Cowdenbeath. He then moved back to North America for a second time, joining Canadian side Thunder Bay Chill, before again returning to the English game. The summer signing also has international recognition for Caribbean side St Kitts and Nevis. He made his debut in the Caribbean Cup against Anguilla and he has so far made eight appearances and scored two goals .

Karl Rose (Manager) Managerial Career; Goole Town. Rose began his playing career as a striker at Barnsley for whom he made four appearances. He moved on to Rochdale, but had to give up his professional career due to a serious injury. He then played for a number of clubs in the non-league pyramid that included Scarborough, Leigh RMI, Tamworth, Garforth Town, Hednesford Town and Goole Town. During his time at Goole he became playermanager in 2009 in a spell that lasted three years. He was appointed manager of Frickley Athletic in May 2012 and in his first season managed to keep ‘The Blues’ in the Northern Premier Division, as they were reprieved from relegation due to the financial difficulties of Vauxhall Motors. Last season was just as difficult for Frickley, but again they managed to survive, this time finishing in 19th position in the league.

A frustrating day for everyone on Saturday, none more than for you, with the high standards you set yourself. What happened with the goals? I just had one of those days. I'm only human and I'd be playing a lot higher level If I didn't have them. Two mistakes, two goals, and that's something that keepers have to live with. I won't go into the details of what I was thinking as it wouldn't make for good reading. In any position so much of your performance is about confidence, though that has to be critical as a captain and goalkeeper. Is your confidence ok, or has it taken a bit of a knock? Listen, if I said it didn't take a little bit then I would be lying, but I won't let it affect any more games. It's gone, I move on. I learnt from a young age that I would make mistakes but it’s about sticking to what I'm good at. And that's what I'll do.

A few people have said to us that you're really maturing into that captain's role, and have been fantastic with everyone this season. That must be nice to hear. That's great to hear. I love being the captain, I like the responsibility and I like to lead. I'm still 24 and I feel like I've been in non-league a very long time, and I'm trying to pass that experience onto the younger lads. I worked hard to get to where I am and I'm not going to stop now.

As we've said elsewhere in today's programme, the unpleasant and personal comments about players on the club forum and on the touchline are not helping matters. How much do these things affect players? Personally they don't bother me. People are entitled to their opinions and can voice them whenever they like. Sometimes though our forum is not private so scouting is getting easier for the opposition and fans need to bear that in mind - a simple statement on the forum can become a opposition game-plan in the right hands. As a fan, if I'm watching my team lose I'm still cheering them on because that's what being a fan is about. Supporting your team home and away, winning or losing. Although your brother isn't getting any match time at the moment, he seems to really be buying into Rammy. Is he enjoying being at the club? Yeah he's really enjoying it. He knows what he wants and he will work hard to push and get it. And he can drink just as well as myself so fits in to the social side of Rammy. Do you know how Callum Jones is? Was it one of the ankles he had operated on over summer? Callum just had a slight roll of the ankle. He felt better after the game which last year he didn't, so the signs are good.

Frickley Main Programme_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 10:00 Page 19

Andy Dawson - is he just struggling to get fully match-fit? Andy has had a very long time out of the game. it's hard for normal bodies to get to grips with multiple games a week let alone the machine that is Andy Dawson.

How did you get on with the Hyde fans behind the goal? Were they just having a bit of fun, or were they giving you more stick than you'd normally get? I love the banter with the away fans and they were top. They gave me some stick but it made me smile and laugh. I have respect for any fan that pays money to watch a match I’m playing in, so there will never be bad blood from me regarding fans.

There are a good number of supporters who really appreciate your commitment to Rammy, and want you to know that you, and all the players, have their 100% support. They're not necessarily the loudest fans, but there are a good number. And I appreciate every fan that walks through the gate to watch our team. I want the most appearances record and that's something I'm going to be very proud of. Thank you for all your support. COYR

WAYNE GOODISON

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game against a Frickley side, who I believe unfairly get bad press for just surviving in this league each season. Like ourselves they will no doubt operate on a tight budget so to be competitive is testament to the collective spirit they always show. I think it is fair to say that our start to the season has been a difficult one. Anyone who thought we would just throw a team together and sail serenely through pre-season and on at the start of our campaign is either full of blind faith or the eternal optimist! This club has had a huge turnover of players in the last nine months - add in a change of Manager and most teams would struggle to just pick up and carry on where they left off. At this level keeping a good base of a side together over a number of months is crucial to any degree of success and in reality we are about a month into that process, with most of our squad new to the club, and in some cases new to the league. From my point of view as a Coach, I am happy with large parts of what we are doing and I’m realistic enough to know that Supporters, whilst interested to see a team develop, also want to see results on the field. I say Supporters, as anyone who genuinely has a love for the club they support, does that regardless, like the vast majority here at Ramsbottom do. You are the ones who matter and who ultimately the Players here are responsible to. Robbo and Edgy are fully aware of where we need to look to improve the squad and again whilst some may want to see sweeping changes and additions, reality is that we have to bring players in who can improve us and not just be a substitute for what we already have. We have a very talented mix of players here who have all worked hard so far and I believe are capable of doing well both individually and collectively as long as they keep looking to work hard to improve. So indeed anyone we do bring in has to match that ethos first before we even take into account ability. All parts of the season are vital, but I’d say it is safe to say our next few weeks will start to shape ours. We have some quick-fire league games plus an FA Cup tie coming up, and by then, once we are around the 10 games mark, I always think you can measure where you are as a squad and also what the season is starting to look like on a whole. I would hope that at that stage our players are still improving but, more importantly, starting to get the results they deserve. Which will only come if we are ALL focused and intent on sticking together and keeping positive. Enjoy the game.

PREMIER DIVISION SATURDAY ROUNDUP

Only two teams are left with three wins in three games so far this season, as both Skelmersdale United and Blyth Spartans kept up their 100% league records. Danny Mitchley scored the only goal of the game in the 30th minute as Skem defeated Halesowen Town 1-0 at Stormy Corner. It was the same score line at Croft Park as a Dan Maguire’s injury-time strike gave Blyth Spartans the three points against Buxton. At the other end of the table both Rammy and Stamford AFC are still searching for their first points of the season. Hyde United beat the Rams 4-1 at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium, with Ayrton Bevins grabbing a hatrick. Although the score line would suggest a comfortable win for the Tigers, a much improved Ramsbottom were worth far more than a consolation goal by David Kuba-Kuba. At the Zecco Stadium, Stamford gave Ashton United a real battle as they eventually lost out 4-3. An Andy Hall penalty and a fine finish from Gregg Smith ensured the Daniels entered half time in front after Adam Morning had given Ashton the lead. Stamford further stretched their lead through Jordan Smith, but the game turned when Richard Jones was dismissed after conceding a penalty, which was confidently dispatched by Chris Baguley. Stamford were then reduced to nine men, when Jordan Smith was also shown a red card, giving Ashton the upper hand. An equaliser soon came from Joe Connor, and Stephen Mason won the game for United with a strike in time added on. Rushall Olympic and promoted Salford City are also yet to lose so far in the early reaches of the 2015/16 Northern Premier Division. The Pic’s picked up a 2-2 draw at Grantham Town, with goals either side of half time by Luke Benbow and Kris Taylor being cancelled out by the Gingerbread’s Lee Beeson and Lindokuhle Ndlovu. Salford City won the battle of the sides promoted from the Division One North and South

as they edged Mickleover Sports away from home. Jordan Hulme and Danny Webber gave the Ammies a 2-0 lead in the second half, before Nic Degirolamo pulled one back for Mickleover. Yorkshire side Frickley Athletic gained their first point of the season as they came back from 2-0 down against Sutton Coalfield Town, John Cyrus grabbing a leveller in the last minute. Phil Trainer put hosts Sutton ahead after only two minutes and Justin Richards added a second for the home side just before half time. Tyler Williams reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute before Cyrus’s late strike meant the game finished all square. The battle of the Towns between Matlock and Whitby was decided by Niall McManus, who struck in the 89th minute to give the home side a 1-0 win. A brace by Matty Bell gave Nantwich Town an away win at Marine; this after the home side took the lead through Lewis Coding. Darlington 1883 and Ilkeston FC both picked up their second maximum points of the season on Saturday. The Robins left Llanellian Road with a 2-0 victory, as goals from Jonathan Edwards and ex-pro Lee Hughes gave Ilkeston the three points at Colwyn Bay. Darlington made easy work of Barwell in front of a bumper crowd of 1,243 at Heritage Park. After a goalless first half the deadlock was broken for the home side by Graeme Armstrong and the lead was quickly doubled by ace marksmen Nathan Cartman. Barwell pulled one back through Alex Tomkinson, but the win was secured for the Quakers as Tom Portas fired home in the 90th minute.

PREMIER DIVISION MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

Monday evening saw Ilkeston and Stourbridge play out a seven goal thriller at the New Manor Ground. The home side took the lead when Charlie Coulson’s low finish went in via a post on 12 minutes.

Frickley Retro Insert_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 18:22 Page 4

It was soon 2-0 to Ilkeston as Jonathan Edwards unleashed a 25 yard curling effort that flew into the top corner. Stourbridge came out fighting in the second half, with Kayelden Brown’s acrobatic close range volley pulling one back, before Dan Scar headed home from a corner in the 51st minute to level the scores. Ilkeston were not down for long and restored their lead through Liam Marshall. It became 4-2 to the home side on 63 minutes, when veteran striker Lee Hughes coolly fired home a pass from Edwards. A late goal by the Glassboy’s Karl Hawley ensured a nervous finish for Ilkeston, but in the end they held on for a 4-3 win. The other game of the night saw Marine claim their first win of the season as they defeated Hyde United at Ewen Field’s. The away side grabbed the lead through Carl Peers after 11 minutes. Any hopes of a Hyde comeback disappeared in the dying moments of the game, with goalkeeper Josh Ollerenshaw scoring a bizarre own-goal to give the Mariners a 2 0 win. Blyth Spartans kept up their 100% record on Tuesday evening as they won 2-0 away at Ashton United, who were previously unbeaten. Two goals in the first half by Michael Richardson and Matthew Wade gave the Spartans all three points at Hurst Green. Buxton ruined Skelmersdale United’s perfect league record as they recorded a 2-1 win at Silverlands. Warren Burrell fired the home side ahead on 14 minutes, but Danny Mitchley put Skem level halfway through the first half. The Bucks won it 21 minutes into the second period when Liam Hardy scored from the spot. Another unbeaten record also went at Dales Lane with Matlock Town coming away with the win against Rushall Olympic. The visitors raced into a two goal after only 20 minutes through Joel Purkiss and Niall McManus before a Luke Benbow brace either side of half time, drew the Pic’s level. The game was won on 55 minutes as Matlock substitute Nathan Forbes hit the winner. They were further helped by the late

dismissal of Rushall’s Jack Duggan. Salford City still remain unbeaten after a home 2-2 draw against Colwyn Bay, this despite taking a two goal lead through Danny Webber and Jordan Hulme. Two goals in the last 14 minutes by Archie Love and Chris Sharp, ensured the Bay had a happy journey back to North Wales. Nantwich Town were full of goals again as they thrashed Sutton Coldfield 4-1 at the Weaver Stadium. Phil Trainer gave the Royal a first half lead, but goals from Josh Hancock, Steve Jones, Matty Kosylo and Elliott Osborne after the break earned an easy win for Nantwich. Frickley Athletic won their first game of the season as goals from Luke Hinsley and Royale Johnson gave then a 2-0 victory against newly promoted Mickleover Sports. Stamford repeated this as they overcame Halesowen Town 3-1. Gregg Smith and Cameron Powell gave the Daniel’s a first half lead and Powell added a third on 58 minutes before Aaron Griffiths pulled one back for the hosts, who have now lost their last three games. Workington also grabbed their first victory of the season as they defeated Darlington 1883 2 1 at Borough Park. Connor Tinnion gave the Reds the lead after 15 minutes, but a header by Graeme Armstrong brought the Quakers level a minute later. With six minutes to go Tinnion’s second of the night from 25 yards gave the home side the win. Grantham are still looking for a first win as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Barwell. A header by Iyesden Christie gave Barwell a lead at the break. Lee Ndlovu cancelled this out four minutes into the second half, but goals from Richard Lavery and Brady Hickey gave Barwell the win, as Grantham had Brad McGowan sent off 20 minutes from time. Wednesday night saw Whitby Town host Ramsbottom United, with the away team hoping to secure their first points of the season. After a goalless first half, the game sprung to life as the Rams took the lead a minute after

Frickley Retro Insert_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 18:22 Page 5

the break through recent signing Max Harrop. Michael Roberts equalised on the hour mark and the game finished all square, this despite Whitby losing their keeper to injury and not having a replacement on the bench.

DIVISION ONE NORTH SATURDAY ROUNDUP

Wins for Northwich Victoria, Kendal Town and Scarborough Athletic meant they all have gained maximum points from the league games that they have played so far this season. The Vic’s kept a third consecutive clean sheet as they brushed aside the challenge of Bamber Bridge, in a 2-0 home win, with goals from Iain Howard and James Ball in the last fourteen minutes. Kendal Town made just as easy work of Osssett Town, as first half strikes from Tom Kilfin and Sam Bailey gave them a routine 2-0 home win. Scarborough Athletic had a harder fight on their hands as a Natahan Peat penalty in the 33rd minute was all that separated the two sides. Elsewhere, Lancaster City and Mossley still maintained unbeaten starts to the new season. The Dolly Blues came out on top with a 3-2 win at home to Witton Albion. A double from half time substitute Reece Pearce and a quickly taken free kick from Aaron Taylor gave Lancaster all the three points. Mossley impressed with a 3-0 home success over the previously unbeaten Clitheroe. Sam Robinson gave the home side a half time lead after 32 minutes, before goals from Rhys Nevins and a second from Robinson wrapped the win up on the last five minutes. Three clubs still remain without any points so far this season, with Radcliffe Borough, New Mills and Prescot Cables all failing to get results on Saturday. Bottom side Precot lost 4 0 at home to Glossop North End, with the result ending manager Neil Prince’s tenure at the club. New Mills suffered a 4-1 loss at Droylsden, who in the process picked up their

first victory of the campaign. Radcliffe lost 1-0 away to unbeaten Spennymoor Town, as Glen Taylor’s 37th minute strike gave the home team a win in front of a crowd of 391.

DIVISION ONE NORTH MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

Northwich Victoria and Scarborough Athletic still have their 100% records intact. Scarborough thrashed Harrogate railway 6-0 on Monday and The Vic’s beat Radcliffe Borough 2-1 at Stainton Park. Despite still being unbeaten, Kendall Town dropped their first points of the campaign as they were held 1-1 away at Bamber Bridge. Clitheroe’s 4-2 win meant Lancaster City slipped to their first defeat of this campaign. The Dolly Blues had pulled themselves level after being 2-0 down, but two goals in the last four minutes gave the Blues all three points. There were also big wins on Tuesday evening for Glossop North End who hit six past Droyslden, Spennymoor Town’s match against Ossett Town also had six goals with The Moors winning 5-1. The nights biggest victory came at Trafford as they hammered manager less Prescot Cables 8-0, with Chris McDonagh bagging five goals. Cables manager in waiting Andy Paxton watched from the stands and surely has a big task on his hands.

FIRST MANAGERIAL CASUALTY OF THE SEASON, AT PRESCOT CABLES

After their third successive defeat of the new season Neil Prince has departed Prescot Cables. A 4-0 loss at home to Glossop North End, coupled with an 4-1 opening day defeat at Clitheroe and a midweek 6-0 home drubbing by Witton Albion has cost Prince his job. He has left Prescot along with his assistants Neil Black and John O’Toole, they were all thanked for their services.

CHELSEA SIGN PEDRO AFTER HIS PARTNER PASSES EXHAUSTIVE JOHN TERRY MEDICAL

Chelsea have completed the signing of Barcelona striker Pedro after the Spanish hitman’s partner passed a rigorous physical examination conducted by club captain John Terry. The transfer was sealed on Wednesday after Terry had approved the new addition, having been given unlimited access to the World Cup winner’s partner Carolina. Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck told reporters, “Throughout this process Pedro has displayed a real willingness to sacrifice the feelings of those closest to him, those to whom he had sworn his most sincere commitment and allegiance on an ongoing basis.” “No, not to the Barcelona fans, I mean to his partner, only for him to submit her to an evening playing in the one position left to Terry that he can perform consistently well in.”

Pedro to Chelsea The medical at the club’s training ground boudoir is said to have gone smoothly, with club insiders insisting it was only ever a formality as Pedro’s partner is incredibly fit, and Terry has always had a soft spot about foreigners. Buck went on to highlight how he felt it was this kind of selfless gesture from Pedro that made him an ideal signing for the London club. “It is this kind of virtue-free behaviour that immediately singled him out as a player who would quickly settle into a Chelsea team that believes moral fibre to be some sort of breakfast cereal.” Buck went on to confirm that Chelsea might once again spend big in the summer, saying Terry has his eye on one or two new signings. “He really likes the look of that Helen Flanagan, so don’t be surprised to see us make another move for Scott Sinclair.”

JOHN TERRY TO APPEAL SUSPENSION OF TINDER ACCOUNT

Chelsea captain John Terry is set to appeal an indefinite ban from online sex site, Tinder, according to reports this morning. The former England international is said to be devastated at the sudden closure of his account after alleged ‘inappropriate’ attempts at making contact with a woman who wasn’t married to one of his best mates. Dogging hotspots in the Essex area have reportedly been placed on high alert following the news. Terry told reporters outside the clubs Cobham training facilities, “After my sending off against West Bromwich Albion I’ve been left with some unforeseen free time, and what better way of passing that time than with some light philandering?” “Having been through all of the players’ WAGs, targeting the partners of other club staff just doesn’t have the same attraction.” “So I have immediately challenged the ban imposed by Tinder moderators, in the hope they’ll give me the freedom on their platform that I’ve been giving opposition forwards this season.” Tinder spokesperson, Simon Williams, rebuffed the request, stating that such a level of access would seriously limit opportunities for other members in the Essex area. “Giving John Terry unlimited access to Tinder would be like setting up a fox with a penthouse suite in the henhouse.” “Never gonna happen, so better for our members to just suspend his account entirely.” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho aired his disappointment at the ban. “Ridiculous,” he told reporters. “Sure – he made contact.” “But only via DM.”

“It was never a penalty.”

The final result may appear to suggest a hammering, but in reality, for over an hour there was little to choose between these two teams still searching for their first wins of the season. Indeed, the visitors had endured a miserable last couple of seasons dropping down two divisions as a result of a record of just three wins in two years. Their last away victory came 19 months ago at Welling, but two goals in two minutes, half-way through the second half, finally ended that horrendous run, much to the pleasure of their noisy followers. Those two goals effectively ended the game as a contest, which was a shame, as at that point the Rams were more than holding their own. After the bad publicity generated

from the previous game, this contest proved to be a straight-forward affair, with the referee and his assessor praising both sides for the gamesmanship and fair play. The game started brightly with a number of chances at both ends, but it was the visitors who took the lead after 22 minutes, when Reece Gray found space in the box to poke the ball home from ten yards. The home side came close to an equaliser minutes later, when a halfcleared corner found Prince Haywood 30 yards out and his terrific first time drive cannoned off the crossbar, with visiting keeper Josh Ollerenshaw grasping at thin air. With both sides looking to exploit spaces, the game flowed from end to end, but the Rams handed the visi-

mined run took him to the edge of the box, but his shot just cleared the bar. Debutant Max Harrop, signed from Ashton United, had a fine game as an attacking midfield player, and he also went close to levelling the scores when his effort from the left took a wicked deflection and rattled into the side netting.

“The score didn’t reflect the play. More optimistic than previously. Keep the faith!” “Boris needs a game!” “Good effort, particularly the second half. Just a shame about giving away three soft goals” “Excellent effort. Keep trying to play the right way and it will come good. Max Harrop looks a great addition. Optimistic!”

tors a second goal five minutes before the break. A harmless looking cross had Andy Dawson and keeper Grant Shenton both going for the ball, and as communications broke down, Ayrton Bevins was on hand to walk the loose ball into the empty net. So the home side had every reason to feel a 0-2 half-time deficit was undeserved, as they had probably edged an entertaining first 45 minutes. Within four minutes of the re-start, the Rams regained a foothold in the game. David Kuba-Kuba had been sent on to replace the lethargic Dominic McHale, and the diminutive youngster's first touch of the ball saw him nod home a left-wing corner to half the deficit. Kuba-Kuba went close to equalising just moments later when his deter-

But despite the pressure, the next goal was always going to prove decisive, and so it was, on 63 minutes, as the visitors strengthened their grip on the game. Shenton made a superb close range save to scoop the ball over the bar, but from the resultant corner, Bevins was on hand to knock the ball home from close range after Shane Killock's header had bounced down off the bar. Before the Rams had chance to curse their luck, Bevins notched his hat-trick. This time a hopeful punt into the box from the right saw Shenton mis-

judge the ball, and Bevins was on hand to slide home his third and Hyde's fourth to ensure the points returned to Tameside. Not surprisingly one or two Ramsbottom heads went down, and from then on the Tigers never looked like giving up the lead, although Ben Woods was unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty when he was upended in the box. The result though proves that at this level, possession wins nothing, and it's all about taking chances. Hyde did it, Ramsbottom didn't, and this is still very much a work in progress.

Frickley Main Programme_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 10:01 Page 34

Good afternoon everyone, and I hope you are all well. Today we welcome, from 't’other side of them hills, Frickley Athletic, and I hope they enjoy their time at the HWRS today, result apart of course. Unfortunately, once again, I will be absent from the stands as today is NatWest T20 Blast Finals Day at Edgbaston - the longest day in all of cricket, meaning I will be at the ground at 7.30am this morning and won't be leaving until roughly 11pm tonight. It is a hell of a day - so I will enjoy a drink later on ... hopefully celebrating a Rammy win as well. You can be sure I will have my twitter feed up in the background of my computer keeping tabs. I hope you don't mind but I am going to be a little bit off topic today in my column. You may have read over the last weekend about the horrific plane crash at the Shoreham Air Show, which is about 40 or so miles from me here in Southampton down the coast in West Sussex. It's magnitude cannot be understated, the video footage and pictures that have emerged show the true horror of what happened last Saturday. So why on earth am I raising this in a football programme column? I know we are all passionate about our team, want them to win and put smiles on our faces. As I write this, we are played 4, lost 3 and rock bottom of the table which is, of course, disappointing. And, reading the comments on the forum, there is much criticism of the team and some of the players. But I would just like to remind everyone that football, or any sport for that matter, needs to be put into some perspective as two young, talented footballers from Worthing

United Football Club, who play their football in the Southern Combination Football League, which is pretty much North West Counties League standard at step 5 of the non-league ladder, lost their lives on Saturday. They were not even at the Shoreham Airshow ... but driving to their Robert Albon Memorial Ground for a 3pm kickoff against Loxwood FC, and were at the traffic lights when the plane struck and burst into a fireball. Goalkeeper Matthew Grimstone and midfielder Jacob Schilt are just two of the confirmed 20 people who died that day. Many, if not all, were not at the show, but just going about their daily business driving down the A27 near to Lancing College. It is a road I know fairly well as I travel on it to get to Hove when Sky are covering Sussex home matches. It is a fairly standard piece of road and a fairly standard traffic junction that you see anywhere. Tragedy, similar to this, can strike at any time. Although nowhere near on the same scale as the heartbreak that Worthing United are enduring, our own club was rocked just a few years ago when Matthew Edgington was brutally attacked on a night out in Manchester. He was never able to play again for us again but thankfully has regained some essence of life. But the events of Saturday in West Sussex have confirmed that life is very fragile. You never know what is around the corner. Of course, it is not just about the two footballing lads who have lost their lives but the other 18 as well who were similarly going about their normal Saturday days out, going to see family or going shopping. I travel the country a lot with my work. I am off to Nottingham later on

Frickley Main Programme_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 10:01 Page 35

this afternoon and then Birmingham on Saturday and, of course, I come up from my home in Southampton to visit Ramsbottom when I can. I have put over 100,000 miles on my car in the last three years, so you can tell just how much I do on the roads of the United Kingdom. But I always have to check in with family to let them know I have arrived safely, as many of us do. I am certain that young Matt and Jacob would have done the same thing when they got to the game. Of course, they didn't make it and my heart goes out to their families, friends, teammates and colleagues and that also goes for all of those affected. Excuse me for being a little bit morbid today but it was very sad to read what happened - the news filtering through as I played cricket on Saturday afternoon last week. I implore you all to love those you are with because you never know when they may never come home. I know we all

love our football and we want our team to do well, and we shout, cheer, moan and gripe at times when things aren't going our way. But let us all remember that this is just a game of sport. It is 90 minutes of entertainment for football, 80 minutes for rugby, 5 days if it is a Test match in cricket. Cricket lost Australian batsman Phillip Hughes late last year in a pure accident. Worthing United have lost two of their players in a pure accident. And I am sure there are many other instances of sporting teams losing much loved and respected people within their confines through unexpected accidents. Unfortunately, it can happen at any time so, please, enjoy your life while it is still here. Love those around you.

Who can forget the worries last season when Mark Ayres suffered a couple of suspected strokes?

...and I’ ll tell you another thing... Do you want a load of tax-payers’ money to do whatever you like with? Infact, just let us know how much you want and we’ ll write the cheque... even better still, how about we just give you a blank cheque and you can make out the value to whatever you want? That’s the message that the Daily Mail thinks we give to immigrants fleeing from the chaos we left behind in Libya, Afghanistan, Syriz, Iraq, and whichever other countries we brought freedom and democracy to, but the amount we give to those people pales into insignificance next to the amount we give to the greedy bankers and their friends who’ve happily bankrupted this country and virtually the entire world. This rant isn’t about bankers though, or about immigrants, so forgive me for getting side-tracked - it’s about the obscene amount of tax-payers’ money that we continually pour into London, whether it’s for the ‘done deal’ that was the national stadium at Wembley, the O2 arena, that was the Millenium Dome - a facility for all, or the latest utter

debacle which is the Olympic Stadium and the amount of money we’re all stumping up so that Karren Brady and the boys can move West Ham in there for a peppercorn rent with the maintenance expenses apparently to be picked up by us! The question for me has to be, who is it that is really robbing us all? The last time the Tories got in they demonised single parent mothers. This time it’s benefit scroungers and immigrants - you know the ones too ill to work, or who wash our car at the weekend, or cook our take-aways, or do all the crappy jobs that no-one in this country can be bothered to do. Meanwhile, lauded by all, are the Karren Bradys of this world (who is now

Frickley Main Programme_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 10:01 Page 37

a Tory peer, Baroness Brady!), or the ‘Lord’ Sugars. LORD Sugar? What’s that about? ALL he did was set up a company that sold cheap tatt, and then apparently disappeared! These are the kind of people that don’t just make off with £92 a week to feed and clothe their kids after we bombed the crap out of their home country, but make off with millions upon millions of our hard-earned pounds (sorry, I should have said ‘legitimately minimise their tax burdens’) to finance their lavish lifestyles and buy their vanity-project football clubs. If you have a look at Wikipedia then you’ ll learn that Karren Brady is known as “the first lady of football”, having been handed Birmingham City at age 23 by David Gold - publisher of pornographic magazines and son of East End criminal Godfrey. Age 23! Why did no-one consider giving me a football club for Christmas when I was 23? There’s a great quote from her in the Daily Mail this week, which is particularly funny given the battle she had with Tottenham and Leyton Orient to wrestle the stadium away from them: “Anyone could have bought this. Leyton Orient, the Qataris, anyone. But nobody saw it, nobody saw the potential here. So roll back that movie without West Ham. Taxpayers’ money would have poured into a big hole, been concreted over and never seen again.” “Now the stadium is nearly finished, everyone recognises what is here and says it’s a steal. But it wasn’t a steal when we were doing the negotiations, because where was the queue of rival buyers? Without West Ham this would have been pulled down.” Did I miss something here? As long ago as 2010 Spurs and Leyton Orient were involved in bidding! I’ ll end by just giving you a quick couple of figures to contemplate, next time you’re slagging off immigrants/benefit scroungers or muslims: In the current plan, as stated by the Daily Mail, West Ham are paying £15million to convert the stadium for their needs. Have a guess how much you, me, and everyone else in this country is paying so that West Ham can move into a brand new 60,000 seater stadium and pocket all the revenue... a frightening £257 million! ...and I’ ll tell you another thing...

For the first time since the 2011 season, and a 3-2 defeat at St Helens Town in the NWCL, the Rams were down for an away fixture on the opening day of the league season, with a trip to the west Midlands to take on Rushall Olympic. Some might have preferred a home game to kick off with but I was more than happy with an away day, especially as we hadn’t managed to get a victory in any of those opening day home fixtures since 2011. It also meant an early season outing on the Rammy Rocket with those world famous Ultras of old Ramsbottom town. We were down for a 10.30 start but, as always, it was closer to 11.00 before we were actually on the road. With a few supporters still sunning themselves on various beaches, at home and abroad, it wasn’t a full

house on the coach, but it was still a good turnout nonetheless. Once again, we had our regular driver, and all round top bloke, Dave, who was warmly greeted by the supporters if for no other reason than it meant that football was back (a willingness to stop at off-licences

She’s “bringing booty back” - Angie Leach’s studded boots at Rushall

around the country for beer replenishments also places him in the top bloke category in my opinion). We had the usual suspects on board with various Masseys, Carlsbergs and Worsicks, as well as a lonely Peter ‘Hackers’ Taylor (yes, that’s a Lonely Hackers, Mr Ayres, a LONELY Hackers. Hang your head in shame, Sir). We were also joined by a couple of Rammy Rocket virgins with Nick (Keepers Union) and Grant (hinch) Despite being as passionate and dedicated as any Rammy supporter, Grant and Nick

usually struggle to make the longer distance away games due to their coaching duties with the Ramsbottom United Juniors on a Saturday morning. With the Juniors’ season not yet started the pair took the opportunity to travel in style, with the rest of the Mutton Army, and most welcome they were too. So, when we unearth the next Tom ‘Boris’ Hartley or Jake Cliffe spare a thought for the likes of Grant and Nick who give up a lot of (unpaid) time for the young stars of the future from our town. Fair play to the chaps, indeed. Making up the numbers, and sitting out of harm’s

way at the front, were Uncle Harry, Sophie, Andy ‘Tight Lips’ Edmunson and Wooly. Since the Robbo Revolution, we seem to have picked up the majority of our new players from the Manchester area and we made our usual stop at Prestwich to pick up the players, before making our way to the other side of the city to pick up Stockport’s finest, Grant Spencer. Despite the usual delays on the M6 we were coming off the motorway and heading into Walsall a little after mid-day. On

least, Kings Lynn. But, that’s enough of the politics, let’s get back to the important matters such as football Little Katie had done her homework by Googling which pubs were close to the ground and, after dropping the players at the ground, by 1.00 we were nicely settled

arrival in Walsall we were met by quite a large police presence who were directing traffic away from the many roadblocks that were in place. A large police presence for the Rammy Ultras, well that had to be a first. As it turned out, the police were actually there for a EDL march that was taking place in the town and fair play to them for keeping the disruption to our journey down to a bare minimum. It turned out there were only a couple of hundred EDL members in town and hopefully they’ll soon be assigned to obscurity, or at the very

in the beer garden of The Manor Arms. I opted for a pint of the local Banks Bitter, although they did have Thwaites on tap, but when in Rome and all that. We were going have lunch at the pub, but were informed by the rather grumpy landlord that “we don’t do food”. I’m not sure the landlord was that grumpy as a rule and I was hoping his surliness was simply his tribute to Stephen Lewis (Blakey from On The Buses) who had passed away earlier that week. contd...

In fact, I’m sure I heard him muttering “I’ll get you, Ultras” as we made our way to the next pub, taking the picturesque canal path. By 3.00 we were all fed and watered, and gathered behind the goal that Rammy were attacking, dreaming of what was awaiting us over the next nine months of football. By 3.02, the dreams began to shatter as Shents let a Rushall attacker lob him from outside the area to give our hosts an early lead. Oh well, “Things Can Only Get Better” as Tony Blair had said/lied to us all in 1997. Except they didn’t as Rammy struggled to even give us a slight hope of making a comeback and to be honest without a wonderful

display between the sticks from Captain Shenton it could have been worse going into the half time break. At least the clubhouse served a decent beer, Theakstons, and we retreated there to lick our wounds at half time. It gave me an opportunity to catch up with Easy Rider Clive who had travelled down on his bike (motorbike, not pedal bike although that would be fun to witness) as I hadn’t seen much of him over the football free Summer. It was also good to see a few others who hadn’t risked the Rammy Rocket and travelled down under their own steam. These included RammyTV Robbie and the long suffering Claire, Stephen (who I assume does not suffer from vertigo

Frickley Main Programme_Standard Programme 27/08/2015 10:01 Page 41

as he spent the ninety minutes filming the game from a rather high gantry), David and Toby Trotter. Another Rushall goal early in the second half more or less put any chance of a Rams revival out of our minds. Oh well, we had our pints and our horns and we determined to enjoy ourselves anyway. This was helped by a group of young Rushall supporters stood near us, who certainly helped with making a positive atmosphere on the covered terrace with their own version of “Oh Rushall Olympic” and a rather nifty Poznan routine to boot. Robbo made a few changes which seemed to give us more attacking options, but despite a spirited attempt to get back in the game, it wasn’t to

be. We just don’t do victories on opening days, do we? Despite the defeat, Rushall’s staff and supporters really helped to make the day a good one with their hospitality and I would like to think that visitors to the HWRS go away with such a positive image of us as a club. I’m sure they must do. It was a quieter than usual trip home although this was probably more to do with the new faces on the playing side, and not the defeat, who are still getting used to know each other. Maybe a little bonding exercise is required here then, Huddersfield anyone?

fixtures & results 2015-16

This season we want to hear first-hand what our supporters think about everything, from team and player performances right through to what everyone thought of the pies and the parking!

To that end, we’ve had printed a load of ‘Have Your Say’ cards, which you can pick up near the tea-bar. Onto these you can write your thoughts and then post them into the boxes near the exits as you leave. These will be available at every game from now on.

Alternatively, you can use your phone to text TV444 followed by your comment to 82055. These cost the same as any other text you would send.

The comments will be given to Robbo/Harry etc, and will be posted to @RammyReaction on Twitter. A selection will be published in the programme.

Oh how easy it must be to support Arsenal, Manchester United or Chelsea. The teams that win week-in, week-out, for whom a bad week is when they draw, or don’t put a hatful of goals past one of the ‘also rans’ in the Premier League. Their fans have a doddle of a life, though ironically are no strangers to a damn good whinge - the level of expectation they now have is ridiculous, but then if you pay £60-80 to get in to watch your team every week then I suppose that entitles you to a moan, doesn’t it? And what about Rammy? Are we that much different from those clubs, supporters-wise? We’ve known great times over the last few years, with the club going from strength to strength, the team performing really well on the field, and promotion upon promotion. We’ve got used to the good times, that’s for sure. We also pay our £9 to get in, which surely entitles us to a good moan when things aren’t going to plan... doesn’t it? Perhaps. Perhaps your £9 entitles you to have a go, but if you want the good times to come back to the Riverside then my advice would be to put a lid on the whinging, because if

Last season these fans were relegated, having gone months and months without a win - would you think it to look at them?

we don’t start getting behind our team then we’re going to go down the pan very, very quickly indeed! You only have to look at goalkeeper Grant Shenton, who is arguably one of the best keepers in non-league football. Goalkeepers’ careers can be made or broken through their confidence coming for the ball, claiming the ball, kicking long on the half-volley. If their confidence is shot then their career is shot; but they’re just the most obvious when their heads are down. The same applies to just about every area on the pitch - and we’ve seen it with Dominic McHale and Shelton Payne this season, and with Donal McDermott last. These are all excellent players with great potential, as shown by McDermott now that he’s stepped back up to the professional game with Rochdale. But when he was at Rammy, trying to gather himself together, get his head straight and get his career back on the rails, what did he hear from the touchline and on the forum? Words of support? Recognition that this young lad needs a bit of encouragement? You bet your house he didn’t. What he heard was, “Get him off the pitch, he’s useless.”

and, “He’s the laziest player I’ve ever seen. Get him subbed!” And that’s where we all need to take a good, long look at ourselves. These lads who can’t be bothered, and aren’t fit to wear the shirt made the eleven hour round-trip ‘on a school night’ to play Whitby on Wednesday. They’ll be here again today, and they’ll wear that shirt with pride. Will Donal McDermott look back fondly on his days at Rammy and how we all got behind him and helped him to kick-start his career? Will Shelton Payne? Will Dominic McHale who Burnley took such a big interest in pre-season? And will Grant Shenton, and Jon Robinson, and all the other people who are putting everything they have into our team, and our club, to try and help it maintain the highest playing level it has ever seen? Or will they remember that they had to defend themselves from a handful of loud-mouths who barrack them every match from the touchline,

and a couple of know-it-all imbeciles on an anonymous forum who get their sniper’s rifle out before the first match is even finished! These players are good, infact some of them are exceptional! If they can manage to make things click then we aren’t so far off a decent side here. We’re not going to be challenging for the title this season, but we’ll give a good account of ourselves, and next season, who knows! Isn’t that good enough? If we do our part, and SUPPORT these lads then we will earn their loyalty and their passion and commitment every minute they are on that pitch. If we continue the barracking then we will have no players, and no managers, and possibly not even a club. So have a think about that next time you open your mouth to shout abuse!

It’s all about confidence, and sometimes your confidence needs a boost
