Covid Update

Impact across the precinct and ramifications for the teaching and learning program.

Here has been a significant impact from Covid across the three schools, with large numbers of staff and students either confirmed positive with Covid or close contacts.

Prior to the change of close contacts identification and mandatory mask wearing in PS settings, DPC had 10 classes placed into isolation.

DSC and DSCESC, although severely impacted by numbers did not have whole cohorts going into isolation due to mandatory mask wearing.

Families are facing financial difficulties to meet testing requirements and there is some reluctance for testing using RATs across the precinct.

ANZAC Ceremony

Due to Covid restrictions, 2022 Dianella Education Precinct to be held remotely.

Due to the impact of Covid and current restrictions, we will not be holding a joint ANZAC ceremony this year. Merryl has approached the Nollamara RSL to investigate participation in a streamed ceremony. The RSL have indicated that they will get back to her by the start of April. As a precinct we will be holding a virtual ceremony that will include staff from the three schools in a socially distanced capacity for the ceremony to be streamed into classrooms.

Harmony Week

Update on Harmony Week activities Again due to the impact of Covid and restrictions placed upon schools we have not been able to hold our usual Harmony Week activities. All school’s were provided with resources to recognise the week and this was left to individual schools to celebrate in a safe way.

Update on new Build – Performing arts Centre

Deb informed the school board of the significant issue that are being placed upon both the Secondary School and the Education Support Centre due to the new build.

The current electrical infrastructure does not adequately support the electrical load that is currently being placed on both schools.

With current Covid requirements to have air conditioning running with doors and windows open, the power across both sites has been tripped 10 times this year. Every time the power is tripped, education department maintenance workers need to attend site to reset. This is often quite time consuming. Every time power is tripped out, both schools lose not only electrical connections but also phone, as these are both linked. This has had a significant negative impact on students learning.

An interim fix of the provision of generators has not solved the issue, as the boosted power from the generators also causes sporadic power failures. Although the issue has been escalated, there is still no immediate or short term fix provided.

When the new build of the Performing Arts Centre is completed, this will have an increased load on the electrical circuits. Until the power issue is fixed, Deb will not be able to sign off on the new build.

It has also been identified that the school does not currently meet the required water pressure requirements to meet fire safety standards. Although an attempt to address this was put in place of replacing some of the outdated water pipes leading into the school, this has not solved the issue. Water pressure is still not adequate. Again a permanent fix will be required prior to the Performing Arts Centre being compliant.

Provision of 2022 student numbers, directly influencing school funding.

Anthony informed the school board of the gradual decrease of student numbers in the school IEC program – dropped from 66 in 2019 – to 30 in 2022. This has had a significant impact on the schools One Line Budget. Approximately $350,000 decrease in the OLSB. Provision of $1.5 million dollars funding to DPC for a new undercover area – request to change scope of works Provision of $30 000 to upgrade play area in Pre Primary outdoor space.

Anthony informed the school board that the school had requested for and been approved a change of scope for the State Government Funding. Instead of an additional under cover assembly area, the school has requested a new Kindergarten.

This has been approved, with representatives for the Education Department Planning visiting the school to determine the best site for the build. In consultation with the principal it has been decided to place the new building on the school oval adjacent to Weewack Crt, image of site attached.

Schedules A and B must be attached to the agreement when you sign it the chairperson of the school board or council must sign the funding agreement to record that they have noted it the endorsement and chairperson notation must be recorded in the minutes of the board or council meeting.

Annual School Report

School Review

Question & Answer

Each school is required to complete an annual; school report in Term 1 of the previous year’s achievements. Template provided this year by the department. Deadline for report moved to Term 2 Week 5.

School principals informed the board of the process and time line to complete Annual Report. These will need to be provided to the school board for input and endorsement prior to the 27 May completion deadline. Annual reports will be provided during the usual week 3 term 2 school board meeting, 11 May. Update on the changes to the scheduled timing of the individual and precinct school reviews.

Due to the impact of Covid, school were offered the opportunity to postpone scheduled school reviews. DSC and DSCESC have asked for the scheduled reviews to be postponed until Term4 and this has been approved. DPC has asked for the review to go ahead as scheduled, due to the work that has already been put into place in preparation of the review. The school board aspect of the review will take place in at the later school review time.

Feedback and opportunity for questions from school board on current process and practice around precinct response to Covid.

School board members were provided with the opportunity to ask any questions or to provide feedback on individual school’s responses to the challenges and issues presented by Covid.

School board members representing DPC unanimously felt that the school had responded appropriately to Covid with sufficient contact and information provided and an appreciation of the online & at home learning provision.

DSC parent representatives expressed positive responses about the amount of correspondence and provision of online work as meeting the needs of the school community.

It was expressed that there is concerns around translations for EALD families and how information is being effectively communicated. This is an ongoing issue and something that the department has attempted to address with the provision of translated correspondence. School have also ensured that Google translate is available on school’s web pages to enable documents to be translated.
