Community Food Share Festival

COMMUNITY FOOD SHARE FESTIVAL Thursday 4th November Your P&C, together with Dianella Primary College Staff, invite you to join us on this special day, and ask that you help us with preparing some food to share.

This is an incredible opportunity to come together as a school community – it's something new where we meet up with classmates and families, to share a meal together and talk about the holidays, the year so far and everything in between.

Event Schedule *By 8:40am (by school bell) - Cooking competition entries must be submitted. *By 11:30am - All lunch and bake sale contributions in. *12pm - Please meet your youngest child at their classroom ready for lunch (12-1pm). *1pm - Live cooking event begins in the undercover area *From 1pm - Grab a treat at the bake sale (items from 50c to $15).

Lunch & Food to Share Lunch: Please bring a dish to share for our lunch feast preferably savoury/finger food/or ready cut in small portions/packaged in small cups. The P&C team and Parent Class helpers will be on hand in the hall kitchen (The Hive) to help with this on arrival if needed. Please refer to our food guide on page 6 or online to help you with any food choices. (For food labels please refer to Form C).

Meet your youngest child at their classroom at 12pm to join them for lunch which will run from 12-1pm.

Sweets: Later in the day we will be holding a bake sale for sweet items. If you would like to also contribute a cake, cupcakes or biscuits for this part of the day, please bring your contribution to The Hive also. Children and families will have the opportunity to purchase items from the bake sale for as little as 50c for small items, through to $10-15 for whole cakes - ensuring everyone can have something for afternoon tea or a take home treat. If you are unable to attend with your child – please send some change with them on the day to purchase from the bake sale, running from 1pm just outside the undercover area.

Important note: Please present all dishes no later than 11:30am to The Hive in order to be lunch ready!

Recipe Share

If you are happy to share your secrets please submit the attached Recipe Share Form (Form A) together with your contributions, and refer to the example on the following page (p. 3).

Think of it as a way to introduce yourself to the school community through the food of your family.

The P&C are looking at ways these recipes can be shared across our school community and may be available later in the year via a section on the website. Stay tuned.

Recipe Share Example Name of Child/Room No.: Jane/Room 1 Name of Dish: Chocolate Fudge Brownies Country of Origin: USA Why did you choose to share this recipe?

This recipe is a favourite among my kids and turns out to be perfectly fudgy and delicious everytime! My mom handed down this recipe to me.

Ingredients List: ½ cup oil 1 cup raw sugar 2 eggs ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp coffee powder (dissolved in 1 tsp water) ½ cup all-purpose flour ½ cup cocoa powder ¼ tsp salt Handful of chocolate chips

Name of Recipe: Chocolate Fudge Brownies Method: 1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees C 2. Grease an 8-inch square pan 3. Whisk the oil and sugar together for 1 minute until the sugar begins to dissolve 4. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, dissolved coffee and beat until it turns pale in color 5. Add the flour, cocoa powder, salt and chocolate chips 6. VERY gently, fold in the dry ingredients. DO NOT beat any more.

7. Transfer into baking pan, sprinkle some chocolate chips on top.

8. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes 9. Let it cool and then cut to serve Comments: · Beat the eggs properly so that the top of the brownies turns out crusty. · Please do not use any mixer or whisk after adding the dry ingredients. Doing so will add air into the mixture and make it cakey instead of fudgy. · Don’t over bake. It will continue to cook after you remove it from the oven. · Don’t skip coffee, it brings out the chocolatey flavor.

Cooking Competition Get the kids in the kitchen!

Encourage your children at home to get in there and create a winning masterpiece for the baking table. The P&C will be running the competition and inviting guest judges to taste the sweet or savoury baked treats.

What to cook?

Here are some ideas; Muffins, sweet or savory scones, biscuits, cakes, breads, sweet or savory buns.

Winners will be chosen for each of our two groups; Kindy-Yr 2 and Yr 3-Yr 6 (please encourage independence) Prizes awarded as follows: 1st Place - 50 faction points 2nd Place - 30 faction points 3rd Place - 20 faction points 4th Place - 10 faction points All other participants - 5 faction points for good effort Please note all entries must use the Baking Competition Form attached (Form B), and a food label (Form C).

Entries must be submitted to the hall kitchen (The Hive) by 8:40am (by school bell).

Any suitable leftovers will be sold off in the bake sale.

Live Masterchef Cookoff

After lunch, 1pm in the undercover area, our live fun event will take place. Two lucky students from every class (from Pre Primary and IEC and through to Year 6) will represent their class in a Live Cook Off. This will be a fun event to watch and cheer for your child or their class. This is a first for our school and maybe the beginning of a tradition for similar cooking events in the future. The recipes the children get to prepare will be shared online so you can all have a go at home! A fun holiday activity for those rainy days.

Food Guide We would like to request everyone who donates food to our events to please label it carefully so that people can make informed choices according to their dietary needs. The label should indicate the basic ingredients used in the recipe to address food allergies The 8 most common food allergens that need to be indicated (if present in the recipe) on the labels are: peanuts tree nuts milk eggs soy wheat (flour) fish shellfish

We must also consider the fact that a large part of our community adheres to a vegetarian or Halal diet. Therefore, if your dish is vegetarian or Halal, please indicate it on the label as “Vegetarian” or “Halal.”
