Dear Parents / Care Givers Harmony Day Last Friday we celebrated Harmony Week with whole school activities, including dancing, cooking, art, music and a multi cultural assembly. The highlights of the day were definitely the amount of students dressed in traditional dress from their home countries and our amazing multi-cultural lunch. Thank you to all of our families who made an effort on the day to share food, helped serving the lunch and joining in on the activities. A BIG THANKYOU to Mrs Gullick and the Harmony Day committee for all of their hard work coordinating. It was a fantastic day.

Assembly Well done to Room 1 who hosted last weeks whole school assembly. The year 6 students presented a very informative Aboriginal dream time story around responsibility. The students did a great job not only entertaining, but also informing our students about being their best. Well done Room 1!

Aussie of the Month Congratulations to Ariyeti who was named our Aussie of the Month for March. Aryieti was nominated by Mrs Price for consistently showing our school value of Responsibility. Thanks to the P&C, Ariyeti received a new school uniform. What a champion!

COVID-19 As you would be aware, the situation regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to create a number of challenges and concerns for our school and the community. Like all schools, our main aim is to keep staff and students safe and as a school we will continue to follow Department of Education advice. NAPLAN 2020 Due to the ongoing issues around COVID-19, all NAPLAN testing for 2020 has been cancelled. This will effect students in years 3 and 5.

Reading Strategies Each newsletter Mrs Callus will be placing in the newsletter some strategies to help you with reading with your child: Reading Strategy of the Fortnight Each fortnight we introduce, teach and practise a new reading strategy to help our students become better readers.

This fortnight’s strategy: Self-Questioning: asking yourself questions while reading.

Good readers are continually asking themselves questions while reading. Self-questioning encourages readers to look for information, which builds better understanding.

How you can help at home: Before reading: discuss what your child already knows about the topic of the book. Have them ask a question about the text e.g. I wonder… How? Why do you think? Who… What… When… Where…

During reading: encourage your child to find the answer to their question. Stop halfway, ask another question.

After reading: discuss with your child whether they found the answers to their questions.

Attendance Every day matters at school and we ask that all students attend each day and on time unless they are unwell. If your child is away please notify the school by calling the office on 9263 5100 or sending a text to our school SMS service on 0437 418711 (please place this number in your phone contacts as Dianella Primary College). Please note that this is a message only service and calls to this number cannot be answered.

Breakfast Club Thursday morning breakfast club will not be held until further notice. This is to protect all staff and students by practising social distancing which has been advised by all health departments.

Notice from CommBank School Banking The health, safety and wellbeing of our communities and our people is our first priority. Due to the rapidly developing situation with coronavirus, School Banking has been temporarily paused from 20 March 2020 until the start of Term 2. Please don’t bring your deposit book with your weekly banking into school and we will notify you when banking will recommence.

Community Garden Look out for the Grow Cart with the day’s harvest free to any parents who would like it. For the next few weeks we will have tomatoes, mint, rhubarb and possibly a few more chillies and capsicum. There are reusable produce bags for you to put them in. Then use the bags the next time you go to the green grocers.

I will also be working in the garden from 3.30 on Saturday afternoons, if you would like to join myself and the other volunteers.

WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!!

Excursion On Thursday 5 March rooms 16, 17 and 19 went to the Cuddly Animal Farm in the Swan Valley. We were able to see and feed many farm animals, some of which the children had never experienced before. We used our senses of sight, smell, touch and hearing to explore the farm and the animals. We even got to ride on the tractor train, play on a real tractor in the playground and jump in a bouncy castle. Our excursion has helped to develop the knowledge and understanding of farms and farm animals, as well as the vocabulary of our Junior IEC children.
