Explo I am a recent graduate of architecture seeking the position of a junior architect.

The past five years of my architectural training has offered me a wide range of experiences of design projects, workshops, hands-on working, site visits as well as exhibitions, With the kind of exposure that I have received, the meaning of architecture has evolved for me over the years. Academic work and professional practice have allowed me to explore multiple dimensions of designing. Eventually focusing more on unifying form, function, materiality, textures, interactions, experiences in built spaces while finding a balance between abstraction and practicality.

I also have a keen interest in creating and designing spaces that are ephemeral in nature like production design or event spaces.

PLACING THE DISPLACED

Understanding and Reclaiming identity of the Marginalised through the case of NRC in Assam.

The primary intent is to explore how does the power of architecture, empowers the dis empowered. The thesis attempts to closely document the lives of communities that do not have any support or recognition from the state or the society they believe to be a part of. It tries to acknowledge the contribution of the marginalized community. And to interpret how architecture can validate their presence by creating ‘new public spheres’ and have ‘contemporary forms of collective associations’.

The North-Eastern states of India share international borders with Bangladesh, which is relatively porous in nature; allowing immigration within the country. There has been an influx of people immigrating primarily to Assam over the years. To curb this unauthorized immigration, the state of Assam is thus updating the National Register of Citizens, with an intent to weed out “infiltrators” and there are nearly 2 Million people excluded from the list. These people contributing to the socio-economic development of the state for decades, are a marginalized community living on the fringes.

The studio intends to give a good taste of the potential of professional work in the real world to transform the quality of life in Patra Chawl. Patra chawl settlement is a part of Ambujwadi in Malvani.

Patra chawl is a settlement and lifestyle constructed out of ‘patras’ or scrap corrugated sheets put together. It is an informal and a temporary kind of informal settlement on government land. Since it is government land which is occupied by people, authorities have tried to pull down and demolish this settlement many a times. Which is also the primary reason for construction of houses using patras as they couldn’t afford to rebuild in another way.

While people living in Patra chawl lack basic tangible infrastructure and amenities like toilets, water supply, electricity, healthcare and educational facilities, access and road networks; they also lack ownership and tenureship of the place, technology and employment which are intangible needs of people.

Since the houses and settlement is temporary in nature it is assumed to be a transitional space where people use Patra chawl as a portal to enter the city and eventually earn means and access to the city to move out of the place.

Understanding religious practices and their relationship with the communities that they serve.

The city of Ajmer is centred around the Dargah-E-Sharif or Hazrat Khawaja Gharib Nawaz Dargah. The Dargah complex, which is a religious hub also patronizes a number of cultural art forms. Highly traditional in nature, these are passed on from generation to generation and a lot of people remain aloof to these age old wisdoms.

There seems to be a constant clash between these traditional art forms that dargah has to offer and contemporary learning, with the latter usually overpowering.

Thus, the intend of the project is to conserve the available elements of culture by establishing a dialogue between the tradition and the contemporary through infrastructure that would allow the growth of traditions to add up to the value systems as well as do away with practices that are obsolete in today’s day and time. The project is an amalgamation of two distinct masses weaved together with bridges.

These two masses emerging out of a third entity that ties everything together. These four components (traditional learning center, contemporary learning center, bridges and the archival/ display center) formulate the learning center.

The aim is to create a center, uniting the traditional influence of the dargah and contemporary influence of the city. The new space hopes to be a connection between the past and the future.

Design process involved interpreting “Bridges : Build and burn” in the context of the Dargah. Hence, build bridges that promote and nurture the rich cultural heritage of the Dargah-E-Sharif and burn those bridges that hold us back.

Exploring the vernacular and institutional systems in Chakrata CHAKRATA, UTTARAKHAND SEM : 4 | GUIDE : Apurva Parikh & Namrata Kapoor TYPE : Institution | BUILT-UP AREA : 860 Sq. M

The project proposes to build a Meteorological and a community centre at Sawra, A settlement in Chakrata. Chakrata faces harsh climatic condition and the intervention aims at providing accurate information about the weather conditions to equip the villages to face the drastic change in the climate and prepare for it. The building is located next to the temple which is the highest point in the settlement. Building uses the existing community space as a foreground and sits as a bar with a bowl floating on the top along the street axis which is perpendicular to the existing village grid. The intervention borrows the village grid to form rectangular space. The bowl acts as an observation deck for star gazing or viewing the valley below and the foreground of the building becomes a space for community gatherings and celebrations.

SITE STUDY

Shindewadi court is a BMC court handling cases within the area of Colaba to Mulund. The site is close to the Dadar railway station and is bounded by MHADA buildings on 3 sides.

Buildings around are commercial spaces on the ground and residential above. This nature of these buildings thereby make the ground plane active allowing secondary functions to spill out on the street. The trapezoidal plot houses the building which functions as a court on the ground floor and school on the 3 floors above it and also a playground adjecent to the building. Because of the trans-programming, the funtioning of the two is altered and restricted. The playground used by the school and the residents for various activities such as sports, leisure and festivities.

Studying existing court houses, the machinary and its perception by the public as an institution of democracy SHINDEWADI, DADAR, MUMBAI SEMESTER : 5 | GUIDE : Rohan Shivkumar TYPE : Institution | BUILT-UP AREA : 5900 Sq. M

The project proposes to reimagine the institute of democracy and build a space which promotes emotional and social aspect of life rather than ingnoring it, like most of the civic building in the country. The building is a blend of shared spaces between the existing school, the court and formal spaces which intends to promote public interaction.The building also hopes to metamorphose into community spaces in the evenings. The design thus aims at keeping the ground plane with a lot of congregation spaces. Every space in the building has its own spill out space which promotes informality even for the people working in the court. Along with the informal spaces, the linear building is designed to cascade into blocks hovering onto you as thought the justice having its own significance and a vital presence.

REVIVING RIVER GOMTI

An urban design studio focusing at relationship between River gomti and the city of Lucknow LUCKNOW, UTTAR PRADESH SEMESTER : 7 | TYPE : Urban Design

The Musa Bagh precinct is on the fringe of the city of Lucknow.The precinct largely has greens in the form of agricultural fields, Musa Bagh forest and the Musa Bird Sanctuary. The Musa Bagh monument, the Dubagga market, the sewage treatment plant,and the cattle colony are important landmarks of the precinct. Some of the larger intents of masterplanning for the precinct include : 1. Establishing a connect between the old city and the upcoming township (Vasant Kunj).

2. Making the area a prospective for economic boom for the city.

3. Making the precint a new ‘get-away’ place for the city.

4. Re-imagining the waste treatment system for the city.

5. Reviving the Musa Bagh Monument complex.

ARCHITECTURE AS A SCAFFOLD / FLOATING VESSEL

The project explores the role of architecture by suggesting public infrastructure insertions in different areas of the city to be built by the Municipal Corporation GOL DEVAL, MUMBAI SEMESTER : 3 | GUIDE : Mayuri Sisodia & Deeksha Surendra TYPE : Institution | BUILT-UP AREA : 450 Sq. M

The project ‘Floating Vessel’ explores the role that architecture can have as ‘scaffolding’ upon which urban citizens can built their lives. It proposes to lay out a scaffolding to uplift the homeless migrants within the site of Gol deval by building a community kitchen and a women’s workspace. The intervention aims at encouraging social interaction among people in a vibrant space while providing the homeless with good food and a platform for interested groups of people to come together and master the art of cooking, conceive new recipes and convert it into a source of income.

The building is made up of three different ingredients; there is a plaza, a core and a hovering vessel that plugs in to the core. It is an amalgamation of open, semi open and closed spaces each promoting differing mood.

INVISIBLE CITIES

Deconstructing the village as described in the book Invisible cities and looking at it through the lens of a profession.

ANEGUNDI, KARNATAKA SEMESTER : 2 | GUIDE : Deepi & Mansi Bhatt TYPE : Recreation | BUILT-UP AREA : 100 Sq. M

Anegundi as a place revealed it’s past. It is contained within the present day ruins, the corners of the street,the river edge, the temple, the houses and its culture. Anegundi has these layers of past which cannot be removed. One can only observe these layers and add up to history of the place like a bonatist observing his subject. Botanist is a scientist that conducts elaborate study about the plant life. Though there is a constant layer of microscope, special halogen lights, gloves, facemask, nose mask between the botanist and the subject of observation to maintain the critical distance between the two. Just as these layers help botanist to perceive better, the layers of the past in anegundi too help to understand city in a deeper way. Based on the interactions with people and observation the intervention became an interface that assists you to bridge the gap between the lively settlement on one side and the dead ruins on the other. This Mobius strip is a sculpturous bridge for public recreation.

MEMORIES IN THE STREETS OF ANNEGUNDI

11 MAPPING THE RURAL SETTLEMENT Documentation

ANEGUNDI, KARNATAKA SEMESTER : 2

Anegundi, located on the western banks of the Tungabhadra now, consists of the residues of an earlier settlement,that perhaps predated Hampi as the seat of the Vijaynagar empire. Its primary economies revolve around the spillover tourism that Hampi attracts and some agriculture, in the lands that surround it.

A large archaeological excavation and displacement of the existing settlement is planned in the near future since the village has been declared World Heritage.

The study identified components of the structure of the settlement, making drawings to understand the relationships of house typology, the fabric and the lifestyle of locals. Clusters of houses were drawn out in detail to reflect the use of space and typologies.

BUILDING STORIES : CHAKRATA Documentation

CHAKRATA, UTTARAKHAND SEMESTER : 4

The settlements in these hills have a unique style of the vernacular cyborg that they evolve as a community. The building typology has developed as a result of the climate and geographic conditions. These settlements are more than just the individual houses they are made up of. The spaces in between the houses are reflective of the kind of community and public life the people envision for themselves. The documentation of the four settlements Mohana, Khoya, Sujaw and Sawara thus aims to highlight the nuances of everyday life captured through instances and events that take place in these settlements,Keeping in mind the architecture required to make these events happen. Our drawings are an attempt to use the conventional plans, sections and elevations and script the lives of the people living in a place called Chakrata, using the many ways of telling a story in the graphic novel form. Sawara, one of the four settlements documented is a linear settlement situated along the ridge of a mountain. A road runs along the center of the ridge that stretches from the school to the temple at the top with settlements on either sides of the road. The terrain slopes down on either sides of the ridge with deodar forest on one side and farms on the other. The ridge creates a distint division between the upper caste and the lower caste houses.

Building Stories : Chakrata won the INTACH Heritage award of excellence in documentation of Unprotected Heritage (National Level)

CONSTRUCTING 1:5 SCALE MODEL A 1:5 scale model was constructed as a part of the exhibition. The 1:5 scale version borrows typical elements from documented houses in the villages studied and put together as a singular unit. The construct of houses in chakrata responds to the geographical terrain, seismic risk, material availability, climate as well as the cultural stimulus. Considering the earthquake prone terrain, these traditional houses typologies have evolved a technique of restraining stone and mud using alternating deodhar wood tied together using an evolved system of joinery. POP bricked, Timber and MDF panels were used for this construction.
