SUBWAY – New York City
Treffpunkt urbaner Subkulturen am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts, analysiert anhand dreier Fotografien von Bruce Davidson.
This B.A.-thesis deals with three photographs that Bruce Davidson took in the Subway of New York.I started this work with a short overview of the historic and social background of America in the 1980s, the time in which Davidson documented the life in the Subway. The photographs i chose to represent Davidson’s book Subway, which contains the pictures he took there, show how broad the diversity of people that used this way of transportation was. One of the photographs shows a street-gang, the second one a young afro-american man, representing the young hip hop culture and the third one a man receiving first aid from some ambulance men.I analyzed the pictures formally and also tried to analyze them regarding their background.
Copyright for all images rests wholly at Bruce Davidson/Magnum Photos.
