It is also presented towards the internal team and our collaborators, especially towards future partners. Stunting is a multidimensional problem and therefore, its prevention requires the involvement of many stakeholders of various background.

Laporan Ruang Riung Ceria ini menggambarkan kegiatannya selama 6 bulan pertama. Ruang Riung Ceria adalah ujicoba pencegahan stunting di tingkat komunitas yang diupayakan secara kolaboratif sejak bulan Juni 2020 antara Yayasan Heights & Minds di Amsterdam, Belanda dengan Yayasan Pilar Tunas Nusa Lestari, Indonesia. RRC berlokasi di Desa Rancaekek Wetan, Kabupaten Bandung dan mulai beroperasi pada tanggal 2 Januari 2021.

Ringkasan Eksekutif

Kegiatan RRC dilaksanakan dengan melibatkan seluruh lapisan pemangku kepentingan. Walaupun pelaksanaannya merujuk kepada peraturan dan perundangan yang berlaku, kegiatan RRC disusun dan dikembangkan secara khusus untuk memenuhi kebutuhan komunitas di lokasi RRC. Pada saat yang sama, media sosial dimanfaatkan untuk mengkampanyekan pencegahan stunting secara lebih luas. Langkah dan kegiatan RRC telah menunjukan jejaring pendukung dan kolaborasi yang kuat dengan beragam aras pemerintahan, termasuk perangkat Desa Rancaekek Wetan, dan beberapa wilayah lain di Kota Bandung, Kabupaten Bandung, Pemerintah Provinsi Jawa Barat dan Pemerintah Pusat. Melalui kerjasama dengan H&M, RRC berjejaring dengan kegiatan serupa di Senegal.

Untuk mencapai tujuan yang ditetapkan, ujicoba di RRC ini memilih pendekatan yang distrukturkan secara bertahap yaitu: 1. Melibatkan masyarakat lokal melalui kegiatan harian melalui peningkatan kegiatan posyandu.

2. Melakukan kampanye pencegahan stunting di media sosial 3. Melakukan Webinar untuk membahas konsep dan kebijakan termasuk didalamnya risiko stunting, parasarana dan program yang dapat mendukung ujicoba pencegahan stunting ditingkat komunitas, melakukan identifikasi beragam kebutuhan termasukpengembangan data dasar dan pengetahuan lokal untuk menyelesaikan beragam masalah di tingkat komunitas.

RRC terletak di RW 11 Desa Rancaekek Wetan. RW terdiri dari 405 KK, dan memiliki dua Posyandu. Puskesmas Rancaekek di tingkat kecamatan memberikan dukungan terhadap kegiatan posyandu bulanan terutama melalui pemantauan dan penyuluhan, serta memberikan pelayanan kesehatan bekerja sama dengan kader posyandu dan seluruh masyarakat. Sejak didirikan, RRC telah menampung layanan posyandu setiap bulan dan sekaligus memperluas layanan dengan melakukan kampanye untuk meningkatkan partisipasi dan menggabungkan kegiatan untuk anak-anak yang datang ke posyandu bersama ibu mereka.

Kegiatan harian RRC berkembang sejak bulan pertama Januari 2021 sesuai dengan kebutuhan masyarakat yang diamati dan dikumpulkan oleh para pihak yang langsung terjun di masyarakat. Kegiatan untuk kelompok prioritas pertama yaitu Ibu hamil, ibu menyusui dan anak-anak dibawah 2 tahun (keluarga 1000 hari pertama) melakukan pertemuan 2 kali seminggu. Sejak Januari sampai Juni 2021, RRC berkembang secara konsisten bersama-sama komunitas melalui kegiatan posyandu dengan dukungan kader-kadernya.

Pandemi COVID-19 yang berlangsung hampir 2 tahun telah berdampak pada pendidikan anak-anak. Murid Sekolah Dasar yang harus belajar secara online menghadapi banyak masalah seperti jaringan internet, keterbatasan dawai, tempat belajar dan bimbingan orang tua. Akibatnya, banyak anak yang pendidikannya tertunda, sementara orang tua cemas akan masa depan anak. Kondisi ini mendorong beberapa orang tua dan tenaga sukarelawan menjadikan RRC sebagai ruang belajar bersama yang diselenggarakan 2 kali seminggu, dibimbing oleh seorang guru yang dibayar oleh salah satu orang tua dan dua relawan bersama Manajer RRC. Selama setengah hari anakanak belajar aneka mata pelajaran, berolahraga dan beraktivitas kreatif. Selama belajar, anak-anak menerima secara langsung informasi dan mengamati kegiatan pencegahan stunting di RRC, termasuk bercocok tanam dan memasak hidangan sehat.

Rancangan kegiatan untuk anak-anak terus berkembang, hari Senin didedikasikan untuk belajar formal termasuk membaca buku, sedangkan Sabtu dipakai untuk belajar dari alam, memahami lingkungan, mencermati alam dan lingkungan fisik dan membuat proyek-proyek sederhana seperti herbarium.

Kelompok terakhir yang disentuh oleh kegiatan RRC adalah remaja, terpicu oleh tingginya angka pernikahan dini, yang diantaranya menikah pada usia 14 tahun.

Kegiatan yang dikembangkan adalah meningkatkan beragam keterampilan dan pengetahuan hidup yang diperlukan untuk mengalihkan hasrat berpacaran dan menikah. Sebagian aktivitas yang sudah dilakukan termasuk aneka kerajinan, daur ulang, memasak dan bercocok tanam.

Pada pertemuan setiap satu kali seminggu juga diisi dengan diskusi tentang kesehatan dan peran mereka dalam keluarga serta pentingnya untuk merawat diri.

Kegiatan pertama adalah dialog pada Instagram Live pada bulan Oktober 2020 antara YTN dan SITH ITB – HMF dengan topik “Global Network for Stunting Prevention", yang dilanjutkan dengan beberapa webinar

Berdasarkan evaluasi diatas, salah satau prioritas untuk dilaksanakan di semester kedua adalah meningkatkan akitivitas komunitas secara menyeluruh di penghujung minggu, terutama terkait dengan peningkatan kualitas lingkungan dan bercocok tanam untuk mendukung kegiatan di RRC serta upaya pencegahan stunting oleh seluruh anggota masyarakat.

6 Mei 2021 Webinar bertajuk "Kolaborasi untuk Pengembangan Simpul Pangan untuk Pencegahan Stunting di Kabupaten Bandung".

Dukungan dari pemerintah sangat penting untuk kelangsungan dan keberhasilan kegiatan nyata RRC di lapangan. Bentuk dukungan diantaranya bisa berupa replikasi dan perluasan layanan. Untuk itu YTN dan HMF telah menginisiasi beberapa dialog kebijakan dan program pencegahan stunting.

6 Februari 2021 Webinar bertajuk "Kolaborasi Mutipihak untuk mengurangi Stunting di Peri Urban Cekungan Bandung".

Membangun RRC sebagai simpul fisik gerakan pencegahan stunting yang dikolaborasikan oleh HMF dan YTN termasuk membangun beragam konsep layanannya.

HMF menyumbangkan sebagian dana sebesar sewa gedung selama tiga tahun, dana untuk peralatan dan dana pengelolaan/operasional, sedangkan YTN memberikan kontribusi sewa 10 tahun kavling tanah dan dana tambahan untuk pembangunan gedung agar sesuai untuk percobaan dan kegiatan yang direncanakan.

Selain itu, ada donasi keuangan individu dan masukan dalam bentuk bahan bangunan dari mitra. YTN juga telah mengelola persiapan lahan termasuk desain fisik dan konstruksi fasilitas, persiapan plot; pengembangan organisasi, dan perluasan jaringan lokal – nasional.

Ketidakpastian pandemi COVID-19 telah menghambat RRC sejak tahap persiapan, launching, hingga pemeliharaan rencana kegiatan. Berkah terselebung dari berbagai tantangan tersebut adalah tim dipaksa untuk belajar dengan cepat, beradaptasi dan fleksibel dalam menanggapi perubahan situasi di lapangan, dan juga di tingkat nasional dan global.

Semester kedua yang dimulai pada Juli 2021 merupakan puncak Covid-19 di Indonesia.

Tim segera beralih ke kegiatan berbasis komunikasi virtual dan pengadaan dan pendistribusian paket terkait stunting dalam bentuk natura kepada keluarga prioritas (1.000 hari) untuk membantu meringankan tekanan kesulitan ekonomi serta memperkuat kohesi sosial di antara anggota masyarakat.

This report reflects the first semester of the Ruang Riung Ceria (RRC) operation.

RRC is an experiment of stunting prevention at the community level, initiated in June 2020 as a collaboration between the Heights and Minds Foundation (HMF) based in the Netherlands and Pilar Tunas Nusa Lestari Foundation (YTN) based in Indonesia.

RRC is located in Rancaekek Wetan Village, Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia. RRC operations started on January 2, 2021.

Executive Summary

RRC operates by involving stakeholders across levels. Although the operation is guided by regional policies, it is tailored to the needs at the ground level. It also takes advantage of the social media for conducting campaigns on stunting prevention.

Evidently, RRC has successfully developed a strong network with the government across levels, including the governments of Rancaekek Wetan Village, Bandung Regency and selected areas around Bandung City, West Java Province and the national government. Through the HMF, RRC has also begun to network with the MindUps in Senegal.

For achieving the objectives, execution of the experiment is structured gradually through three approaches: 1. Embracing the local community through daily activities incorporating the Posyandu structure, 2. Conducting social media campaigns on stunting prevention 3. Conducting webinars for concept/policy discussion covering among others: risks of stunting, infrastructure and programs that have the capacity to support the experiment, identifying needs including developing basic data and local knowledge to solve some of the basic issues on the ground.

RRC is located in RW 11 of Rancaekek Wetan Village. The RW consists of 405 households, and has two Posyandus.

Puskesmas Rancaekek at the subdistrict level provides support on monthly Posyandu activities mainly through monitoring and counseling, and providing health services in collaboration with the Posyandu cadres and the whole community. Since its establishment, the RRC has housed the monthly posyandu services and at the same time has expandedservices by conducting campaigns to enhance participation and incorporating activities for children who come to the posyandu with their mothers.

Daily activities at the RRC has grown since the first month in response to the needs and demands observed and gathered from those involved on the ground. Activities for the first priority group, covering pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under twos (the 1,000 days families), are conducted twice a week. From January to June 2021 these activities have grown consistently including through Posyandú activities and the support from the team of posyandu cadres.

The prolonged Covid-19 pandemic has caused a growing concern on the impact of the pandemic on children education.

Children who have to do online education from their homes, faced difficulties related with connection problems, unavailable gadget and space, and lack of parent supervision.

Consequently, many children were denied education, while the parents were anxious of the children’s future. Concern with the situation, one parent supported by some local volunteers proposed to use the RRC as an alternative space for children to study. In response, the RRC is opened twice a week for children who want to study, supervised by one formal teacherpaid by one of the parents, two volunteers and RRC managers. Half a day was allocated for studying various subjects, and conducting exercise and creative activities. The children also received information on stunting and stunting prevention which included cooking and eating healthy food together. The design of children activities continued to develop with time. Mondays were dedicated for a desk study, including reading books, while Saturdays were for outdoor learning to understand nature, for example, conducting environment observation and simple project development such as making a herbarium.

The last group of RRC daily activities involves the teens. Involvement of this group was based on the concern about the high level of early marriage among the teens, some as young as 14 years old. The activities focus on knowledge and skill development as an attempt to divert interest on dating and getting married too early. Some of the activities are: doing handicraft, learning about recycling, cooking, gardening and weekly meetings discussing their role in the family, environment and the importance of self-care.

Based on the above evaluation, one priority of the next semester is to strengthen community activities over the week end, especially on environment improvement and planting food to support RRC activities, including supporting stunting prevention campaign for the whole community.

Support from the government structure is essential for the sustainability of RRC activities on the ground. Such support also opens the possibility for replication and expansion. In this regard, YTN and HMF have initiated several policy and program dialogues.

The first was a peer-dialogue on Instagram live on October 2020 between YTN, and SITH ITB – HMF on the topic of Global Network for Stunting Prevention, followed by several webinars: December 3 2020 A Webinar on Action Collaboration to Reduce Stunting Rate in the Community Level, February 6, 2021 A Webinar on Multiparty Collaboration to Reduce Stunting in Peri-Urban Areas of the Bandung Basin; May 6, 2021 A Webinar on Collaboration of Development Food Nodes for Stunting Prevention in Bandung Regency Creating RRC as a physical hub for actions on stunting prevention action started as a collaboration between HMF and YTN, including in developing the concept of services.

HMF contributed a part of the fund equals to a three year building lease, the funds for equipment and the management/operational fund, while YTN contributed 10 year lease of the plot of land and additional fund for building construction to make it suitable for the experiments and the planned activities. In addition, there were individual financial donations and in-kind inputs in the form of building materials from partners. YTN has also managed the ground preparation including the physical design and construction of the facility, the plot preparations; the organizational development, and expanding the local – national network.

The uncertainty of COVID-19 pandemic has hindered RRC since the preparation stage, the launching, as well as the maintaining of planned activities. The blessing in disguise is that the team is forced to learn quickly, to adapt and to be flexible in response to the changing situation on the ground, and also the national and the global level.

The second semester which started in July 2021 is at the peak of Covid-19 in Indonesia.

The team has immediately shifted towards activities based on virtual communication and procuring and distributing in-kind stunting related packages to priority (1,000 day) families to help ease the pressure of economic difficulties as well as to strengthen social cohesion among community members.

Growth and development are the basic rights of every child. Nevertheless, one of three children in Indonesia suffered from stunting. In Bandung Regency, stunting prevalence in 2019 was 27.8%, while according to WHO, the maximum stunting prevalence is 20%.

Stunting is the impaired growth and development experienced by children due to chronic malnutrition, frequent gastrointestinal infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation. It has negative impact on brain development during the first 1,000 days of a child's life. This condition is permanent, but is only evident after the child is 2 years old.

Stunting also robs children of many opportunities before they even grow up.

Children who suffer from stunting have the potential to get low grades due to difficulties in attending lessons at school, leading to difficulties in finding adequate jobs, and is more likely to earn less income by as much as 20%.

A high stunting prevalence negatively impact the country's economy. If Indonesia's stunting prevalence does not decrease, the young generation will be less healthy than they should be, thus decreasing their productivity, and holding back the nation's growth.

It is clear that RRC’s mission to contribute to stunting prevention could not be more urgent.

Ruang Riung Ceria is a forum/platform for the people of Rancaekek Wetan, Bandung Regency, to protect the first 1000 days of life so that future children are protected from stunting.

This movement is a collaboration between the Pilar Tunas Nusa Lestari Foundation (Tunas Nusa Foundation /YTN) with the Heights and Minds Foundation (Heights and Minds Foundation/HMF) and the RW 11 community of Rancaekek Wetan Village, Bandung Regency. RRC is YTN’s interpretation and development of the HMF’s MindUp social franchise model for the peri-urban community of Rancaekek Wetan.

Ruang Riung Ceria

The MindUps model was initiated by HMF and aims to channel various messages and suggestions about nutrition in a modern, efficient and fun way in order to reduce and prevent malnutrition chronic in children.

The first implementation of MindUps was carried out in Senegal, Africa, in two places with local names Tawfekh Keur Jaboot in Jaxaay and Tawfekh Diam in Hann Bel Air. The RRC is designed as a joint program for 3 years, from January 2021 to December 2023.

RRC preparation stage was carried out from April to December 2020, and included data collection and processing, program development, network development, and construction of RRC building and gardens. RRC is expected to produce a model that can be disseminated to other places in Indonesia and to strengthen the global stunting prevention movement through HMF.

Rancaekek Wetan Rancaekek Wetan is a Village in Bandung Regency at Rancaekek subdistrict.

In the past the whole area of Rancaekek sub-district was known as one of the rice field (paddy) and fishery production centre in Bandung Basin area.

In early 1980’s there were two government policies: to move some polluted industries from Bandung City to the Cileunyi – Cicalengka corridor and to develop the High Education center at Jatinangor, Sumedang Regency.

At present, 82 Ha of 225,578 Ha Rancaekek Wetan hamlet area is functioned as paddy field and other agricultural area.

Since then, there has gradually been two systematic shifting: 1. The transformation of agricultural into settlement and industry 2. The shifting of peasant into factory labor or trade – services

RW 11, Rancaekek Wetan

Like many peri-urban areas around Bandung, Rancaekek Wetan became a mixed settlement consisted of a huge area of formal settlements developed by the Government through Perumnas at the end of 1980s, clusters of housing and settlements developed by the private sector causing increased density of original kampungs, and semi-formal new rental settlement built on previously rice field area. Most senior residents still work as peasants, while the young work in nearby factories, online services, trade, etc.

It is difficult to separate Rancaekek Wetan dynamics with the urbanization of Bandung Basin with the future expansion of the Padaleunyi Toll Road, and the high-speed Jakarta– Bandung train planned to operate in 2022, which will influence land use and profession conflict in Rancaekek Wetan RW 11 is consisted of 9 RT. In general the population can be divided into people who live on the formal settlement and people who occupy the inactive railway line (squatters). More than a half of the household are categorized as families with low financial income (below average), some of them received poor household support from the government.

Environmental Initiatives

Food Security During YTN’s first attempt in developing a peri-urban concept including building the Kebonbelajar living laboratory, the team learned about the harsh environment condition of Rancaekek Wetan caused by water pollution from the factories. Public facilities and settlements wastes, and residue from pesticide used on paddies were polluting open water, ground water, and land. In addition, there was unhygienic habits of people surprisingly unrelated with the economic and social status of the household.

In 2013, YTN developed the Kebonbelajar as an open integrated farming effort, combining water improvement efforts, and SRI – mina padi for rice cultivation and permaculture. Within 4 years, the local community has recognized the different ways for addressing the impact of climate on water quality especially during a drought. August 2017 marked the first collaboration between YTN and RW 11 including its Karang Taruna (youth organization) to clean the area and started the planting movement.

The agriculture practice in Kebonbelajar has also inspired the community to start planting in their own backyard.

It is important to note that there were different conditions effecting each household. Some frequently faced floods, others faced attacks from pests such as rats, while others were living in rented facilities with no area for planting. Even though Rancaekek was one of the main rice and fish production in Bandung Basin, situation in 2013 has changed significantly, because paddies and ponds have been converted into settlement areas, industrial areas and or other functions. In addition, the peasants working on the land were mostly not land owners, many were old and had poor health condition.

New settlements channeled liquid & solid waste to open water and surrounding areas.

Massive industries dumped polluted water to the open water, polluting rivers, irrigation channels and surrounding areas. Public facilities such as the wet markets also dumped a lot of waste from their activities, together with residues from chemical fertilizers and pesticides into open water.

In view of these challenges, the Kebonbelajar has consistently introduced various initiatives through actions, joint events and stimulations focusing on water improvement, solid waste management, and food growing in collaboration with households and the teens. The first infrastructure developed in the Kebonbelajar was the septic tank and water filter system incorporating a five step simple filtering including a garden pond for water purification.

The Challenges of Stunting

Stunting is still a problem that must be solved in Indonesia.

Based on the data of the Indonesian Toddler Nutrition Status (SSGBI, 2019), the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia reached ....

This figure exceeds the standard set by WHO that the prevalence of stunting in a country should not be more than 20%. Challenges in dealing with the problem of stunting also emerged. One of the challenges is the lack of public understanding of stunting.

An understanding of stunting should be given to prospective brides before marriage, before pregnancy, to mothers who are going through the first 1000 days of life, and also to the whole family members, so they will prioritize the health of mothers and children under two years old.

The living conditions of mothers and children can also be a stunting challenge.

Clean water, a healthy environment, and adequate resources are some important factors that need attention.

Another challenge to consider is the lack of nutritional intake received by mothers and children. Good and balanced nutrition is an important factor in optimal child growth and development so that it will minimize the possibility of children being stunted.

In addition, the support of other family members is needed as a reminder and encouragement for mothers in preventing stunting in their children. All family members can play a role starting from the father, brother, grandfather, grandmother, or other siblings.

The COVID

Pandemic Situation The Covid-19 Pandemic which hit the world in January 2020 has also affected the RRC. When planning for the RRC operation model started in April 2020, the team was not aware of the scale, the length and the impact the pandemic would have in the future. The original design was to base all activities within RRC, and involving active participation of the target groups.

Webinars were planned as a vehicle to develop networks and share findings, and to gather civil society support, while the social media would be used to share information and knowledge on stunting prevention. Despite the pandemic, RRC has been successfully following such design during the preparation stage from june to December 2020, and for the first six months after the formal lunching in January 2021.

Stunting is a threat to maximizing the attainment of Demographic Bonus potentials Indonesia is projected to reach the peak of the demographic bonus in 2030.

Demographic bonus is a situation when the share of of the working age population (aged 15-64 years), in a region is larger than the nonworking age share of the population (aged 14 and younger, and 65 and older). The demographic bonus can boost economic growth benefiting the whole population of a country.

However, a large number of stunting cases will threat the attainment of maximum demographic bonus potentials. Stunted children tends to have lower cognitive abilities resulting in less education and reducing the possibility of getting good jobs in the future.

Stunted children are also prone to have noncommunicable diseases in their adult years, disrupting their productivity. In fact, stunting reduces the quality of human resources that will negatively impact the country’s economic growth.

Therefore, stunting prevention needs to be done, because in addition to having an impact on stunting sufferers themselves, it also holding back the nation's growth.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also affected school children, who had to study at home under a challenging condition marked by the lack of internet connectivity and access to appropriate gadget to support online learning, and inadequate study space.

Although RRC was initially able to allocate space and facilitate children to study at the RRC on selected days, with the worsening pandemic, it had no option but to discontinue such activities until the situation improves and activities within the facility can resume.

However, when the pandemic got much worse in July 2021, RRC had to comply with the health protocols introduced by the government to reduce the rapidly increasing number of covid-19 positive cases. As the result, RRC converted its operations and became an offline hub for the community, supported by online communication, enhancing the use of existing whatsapp group of priority target group members to maintain direct communication on stunting related issues.

The Concept of Inclusive Programs

The main focus of Ruang Riung Ceria is stunting prevention. In order to do that, there's a need to approach not only the pregnant women, lactating women, and children under two years old; but also the whole community as family members. This is due to the local culture, in which the mother usually prioritize the father's well-being as the bread winner and her children before herself, even though she might be pregnant or lactating, and in need of more nutrition for the fetus or baby. As such, it's crucial to deliver the importance of adequate nutrition for mothers and children under two years old to the whole family members, so they will prioritize the mothers' health and children development first in the family.

The inclusive approach of stunting prevention is embracing all community through arranging specific target groups in each of RRC's activities. There are 3 categories of target group, divided by the priority roles to prevent stunting: 1. The first priority: pregnant women, lactating women and children under 2 years old.

2. The second priority: children, adolescent / teenagers.

3. The third priority: the rest of the community including the senior citizen (grandparents) who often become the caretaker of the children when the parents are working.

Rancaekek Situation RW 11 of the Rancaekek Wetan Village consists of 9 neighboring Rukuns. The total population is 1,478 people with 300 immigrants. The Residents of RW 11 can be grouped mostly into middle and lower income categories. The majority of the population work as factory workers and casual workers (employed on a day to day basis), with a minority working as civil servants, and traders (mostly warung owners).

The area of RW 11 is quite wide and can be divided into 2 areas. The first area is along the Walini road, which covers RT 1, 2, 9, and a part of RT 8 and RT 3, and used to be a rice field area.

The second area is called Babakan Nanjung, which was formerly called Jalan SS (Station Road) and includes RT 4, 5, 6, 7 and half of RT 8.

Babakan Nanjung land is owned by PT. KAI, which includes a railway line to Tanjung Sari (the length of the line used for settlement is around one km).

People began to inhabit this area around the 1990s.

There are 4 large rented houses scattered in RW 11, which are owned by Mrs. Hajah Yoyoh, Mr. Haji Enok, Mrs. Atikah, and Mr. Haji Nanang.

The economy is down due to the Covid-19 pandemic indicated by the laid off of a large number of factory workers, while on the other hand, the number of odd jobs is increasing.

Parenting Dynamic The parenting style of families in RW 11 seems to be influenced by 2 factors; whether both parents work and the home environment.

For families in which the mother is not working, there is a tendency for the children to play at home with their mother and siblings.

Meanwhile, for families in which both parents are working, the grandmother or other relatives usually takes care of the children; sometimes there are non-relative caregivers. In general, children at home are only allowed to play outside around the house and their association or friendship is also limited to the children of their neighbours or relatives. In addition, the child's time is usually more scheduled (between eating, playing, napping, studying, attending religious school or tutoring, etc.). For this type of family, not much has changed during the Covid19 pandemic, the only difference is that children spend less time out of the house.

For families who live in Babakan Nanjung (railway area), the children tend to have more freedom (similar to children in rented houses), and usually they play in large groups. The children whose parents are busy are usually entrusted to their neighbours.

There are also families who live with an elder relative, usually the grandmother.

Sometimes, the grandmother takes care not only her grandchildren, but also the neighbours' children. There seems to be a culture of taking care of each other’s children among the neighbours.

Most of the tenants are factory employees whose status was not married or only lived in rented houses just to work (their families were in their hometown, etc)

Reached Target Groups

The main target group of Ruang Riung Ceria consists of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and mothers who have children under 2 years old, with the aim of maximizing stunting prevention efforts during the first 1,000 days of life.

In reality, other community groups should also be included in any stunting prevention strategy. In this regard, during the last 6 months, Ruang Riung Ceria has embraced the second target group, including children above 2 and the adolescents/teenagers

The main target group has been actively involved in RRC programs since January 2020 with high enthusiasm. In addition to the mother of the main target group and the cadres on duty, other mothers have come and participated in routine activities. RRC holds Posyandu activities once a month for growth monitoring, in which cadres take the measurement of the children’s weight, height, and head and arm circumference; pregnant women have the pregnancy consultation, and everyone coming to RRC on that day can participate in information sharing/counseling session usually delivered by Mrs. Hena and Mrs. Fitri from Puskesmas Rancaekek.

Aside from the regular monthly Posyandu activities, the programs involving the main target group are: Cooking demonstrations Gardening (planting vegetables) Mushroom cultivation Cooking shows Experiment shopping at stalls (warung) and markets

The following chart shows that the presence of the main target group is less compared to that of other mothers and cadres. Several factors that may explain this condition are: conducting the same type of activities back to back, inadequate information sharing about RRC activities, difficulties in getting access to RRC, difficulties in leaving work or leaving their children at home.

Some solutions considered to increase their participation are: increasing the variety of activities to keep the target group interest, expanding communication efforts so that information about RRC activities can be received by the main target group, and carrying out activities closer to the houses of those with access problems (picking up the ball). As a matter of fact, the latter has been put to practice by having routine activities conducted in RT 03 every two months, to enable the participation of the main target group in RT 03, which location is far from the RRC.

Activities for children has begun in February 2021, but has become more intensive in March 2021. The activities among others are: Learning together Farming Strolling around the RRC neighborhood Learning together is open for kindergarten, elementary, and junior high school age children. Kindergarten-age children gets lessons on reading, writing, counting, reading the Koran, drawing, or making creations; while elementary school-aged children gets lessons similar to what they are getting in school such as English, mathematics, and science. During the last 6 months, junior high school children have only come manly for discussing homework or asking questions; their attendance was small compared to the other two groups.

The following chart shows the pattern of child attendance that tends to decrease with time. The most likely explanation is that the children are getting bored and wanting to have new and more varied activities. In July 2021, RRC added a new activity of playing and learning while conducting sightseeing around RRC. In addition to studying school lessons, the teacher/managers have a task to give the children information about stunting during break time, expecting the children will extend their stunting knowledge to their parents or relatives who may have babies or toddlers. In addition, the children also get ideas about foods that are good or not so good for consumption. The intention is that from an early age, the children can participate in preventing stunting in their locality by building healthy habits.

Activities The core of RRC programs is knowledge and awareness development about stunting prevention. The activities are categorized to suit each target group: For the main target group, RRC convey messages related to stunting prevention, such as the crucial 1,000 day period, the importance breastfeeding, complementary feeding (MPASI) and healthy diet, through cooking together.

For the teenagers, RRC invited Mrs. Hena, a midwife from Puskesmas Rancaekek to provide counseling about the importance of female teenagers taking iron tablets once a week to prevent iron deficiency anemia.

For the children, RRC provided a mini library equipped with various kinds of books and interactive cards to read during routine activities.

As a MindUp, RRC offers growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) services to pregnant women, lactating mothers and mothers with children under the age of two.

Children’s height and weight are measured and recorded. The mother and child received counseling on growth and development based on the measurement results of the individual child. Pregnant women can also get their weight monitored and received counseling at the RRC..

While recording is done on paper at the moment, the HMF is collaborating with the IT Company Service Heroes to build a system, the Heights and Minds Highway Platform, which allows the recording, interpretation of growth progress and linking to appropriate counselling messages, to be done electronically in one system.

The Heights and Minds Highway Platform also allows the growth curve to be plotted electronically and to be interpreted automatically.

The Platform delivers First 1,000 Day messages every 100 days (~ every 3 months) according to the age of the child. Box 2 describes the Heights and Minds Highway Platform in more detail.

In addition to traditional growth monitoring tools such as the weighing scale and microtoise, the RRC also uses the child length mat to create awareness and educate about stunting.

The Child Length Mat also employs easyto-use visual cues to assess if a child is within a normal height - for - age measurement, enabling MUMs and caregivers to early identify and address potential problems before the impact of inadequate nutrition becomes permanent.

The length mat was originally developed

by The Manoff Group but has since then been used by the Government of Indonesia’s stunting program. The Heights and Minds Foundation developed its own Child Length Mat based on the original design of The Manoff Group, this one is used at the RRC.

Cooking

Cooking is the activity conducted most frequently in RRC. The cooking demonstration is also an RRC strategy to introduce its presence and to reach out to the community.

The activity delivers important messages casually and in a fun way, so that the mothers are not overwhelmed.

This activity is held regularly at the RRC for pregnant women and mothers of children under the age of five on Tuesdays and Fridays, although other target groups are also welcome to join.

Gardening

Through the cooking demonstrations, the women in the community learn creative ways to make healthy snacks and meals using locally available food.

As planned, the objective of gardening is to as much as possible provide food such as vegetables to support RRC activities, particularly for the main target group and to show different ways for planting food in limited areas..

To date, a range of local meals and snacks have been prepared and sampled at the RRC. The aim is to introduce healthy and delicious food with easy to find and affordable ingredients, also with simple cooking methods, in hope that the mothers will try to do by themselves at home.

RRC’s planting area is around 86m2 garden below the staircase and the roof top garden.

Subsequently, there will be more areas for planting with the next plot of garden in another experimental activities “Co Living – Tunas Nusa” currently being developed, located beside RRC. There are 4 plant categories in RRC: Trees: Banana, Rose Apple, Papaya, Manggo, Citrus Climbers: Pumpkin, three types of Passion Fruit, Beans and Water Gourd.

Roots, Vegetables & Herbs: Taro, Cassava, Tomato, Chilies, different types of vegetables and different types of herbs.

Mushrooms: Oyster Mushroom.

The knowledge shares at RRC activities starts with how to: input, process and post-harvest handling.

Food Security Knowledge Improvement: Shopping Experiments

As a hub for learning, the RRC encourages the mothers as the main target to understand gradually the food security context, involving learning at their own phase, experimenting in group, and improving their life style at the household level.

The action starts with a discussion on food security during the cooking practice, followed by gradual information on food nutrition, food processing, planting food, overall health, the pandemic and food selfsufficiency.

Going a step further than the usual cooking demonstrations, the RRC also challenges the women in the community through shopping and cooking experiments to understand the food supply chain:

Growth Development and Early Stimulation (In Development)

Currently, children who visit the RRC are able to play with a range of early childhood development and stimulation toys.

The children can do this while the mothers undergo counselling or participate in cooking demonstrations, or after meals.

While the range of tools and toys are limited and simple at the moment, the HMF plans to offer more targeted early stimulation services in the future via the Heights and Minds Highway Platform that is currently in development. The children will receive these services from the MUMs and RRC’s network of experts.

1. Shopping experiment to pasar (market) 2. Shopping experiment to warung (kiosk) For shopping, the mothers formed a group of two, each was provided with Rp. 10 thousand ( Rp. 20 thousand/group). With the money the mothers are tasked to buy food ingredients that can be processed into nutritious food for children and their families. These experiments also served to see the mothers' understanding of healthy foods by the ingredients they chose to buy and what could be done to improve their knowledge.

It was a surprise to learn that some mothers have a high empathy for their shopping partner. The partners' living condition, for example: how many people in the family, especially children, what they need to eat, etc, became their consideration for choosing the ingredients together.

Ruang Belajar (Learning Space) The impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on education in RW 11, Rancaekek Wetan is that children lose the space, facility, and teachers' guidance to learn when schools have to be closed. The effectiveness of teaching and learning also decreases when students no longer have a consistent study schedule and guidance.

Ruang Belajar (Learning Space) is open to all children and youth and aims at maintaining the continuum towards pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children under 2 years old, and promoting equality in having access to knowledge for all citizens. For children, Ruang Belajar has been the core for their activities that is to learn.

The existence of learning activities in RRC helps provide an understanding of stunting such as hygienic habits, regular and healthy eating, and the importance of food independence for the whole family.

Besides a place to do school work, they can also read together, learn about the environment, and cook together. To support the activity, there are benches and tables, paper, stationery, WiFi, and lunch in RRC.

The message of "Learning is fun!" is what RRC wants to convey to the children, so that learning become a part of their lifestyle. This is the reason why outdoor learning with various activities is one of the activities that has been done in the Ruang Belajar program.

Exercising Simple and light exercise is also introduced to the children, and usually done before the start of indoor learning..

Gardening The children sometimes participate for a day of gardening involving planting, harvesting, and plant watering. An example is planting sunflowers in a used plastic glass and bringing it home as a a personal project.

Outing RRC also organizes outing events by conducting walks around RW 11 to increase awareness about the environment including the different plants. Upon returning to the RRC, the kids stick the leaves collected during the walk on paper as their creation!

Playing and having interactive experience with nature during childhood is directly correlated with positive environmental sensibility and behaviour in later life. This can be developed among others by introducing environmental condition in real life, especially related to water and sanitation, emphasizing the importance of hygienic and healthy environment for stunting prevention.

Activities

Teenager

Adolescence is a period of biological and physical-social of human growth towards adulthood. Hormonal and brain development occurs in adolescence. The urge to seek pleasure and appreciation as well as emotional responses begin to grow during early adolescence, as well as the development of the brain system to adapt to the environment, make decisions, organize, control physical and emotional impulses and plan for the future.

Therefore, adolescence is an age that requires space and support to develop knowledge, skills, regulate emotions and relationships, adequate nutritional intake and a balanced lifestyle so that the reproductive system and social abilities of the adolescents can grow optimally.

In Rancaekek Wetan, most women got married and have a child soon after they graduated from high school (around age 19 years old), but there are some who already have a child at the age of 16 years old. This situation is concerning as a teenager body (under 19 years old) is not yet ready for pregnancy and giving birth. Programs specifically tailored for teenagers will help their development and reduce the risk of creating future generations of stunting children.

Learning Foreign (Japanese)

Language

The activity of learning Japanese has only started recently. One of the RRC managers, Teh Mutiara, is a Japanese language teacher in a local vocational school. Her idea to use her expertise in helping teenagers who come to RRC learn Japanese was enthusiastically accepted, so the program continues.

Do It Yourself Teenagers were also invited to make homemade items together, from bar soap to kimchi (Korean fermented vegetables). They were actually the ones who chose to make kimchi and teokbokki (Korean rice cake). Their interest in Korean dish is very clear, perhaps influenced by the K-Pop culture and Korean Drama that is very popular in Indonesia.

The fact that they were asking about how to make those dishes show us that RRC has the correct teenager platform.

The offered programs have successfully raised their curiosity and encouraged them to broaden their knowledge.

Community Counselling from Puskesmas Rancaekek Mrs. Hena, the midwife from Puskesmas Rancaekek would occasionally visit RCC to provide counselling to the teenagers.

One counselling topic is anemia, explaining the difference between anemia and low blood pressure, the cause of anemia and its impact on teenagers, government iron tablet program for teenagers, and examples of foods containing high protein and zinc.

Mrs. Hena also gave iron tablet to the girls, taken on the spot to monitor possible side effects.

General Activities

Gotong Royong for Healthy Environment

Monitoring and Evaluation

RRC together with cadres and residents of RW 11 worked jointly to clean the environment around RRC and RW 11.

With the help of a MSc Global Health student from the University of Maastricht, HMF started developing a survey as a monitoring and evaluation tool for the Heights and Minds, with the aim of testing local adaptation of the questions at the RRC.

One of stunting prevention strategies is to adopt clean and healthy lifestyle, and this is the reason for involving the children in cleaning and preparing RRC for the activities. Cleaning together encourages children to engage in the culture of gotong royong or mutual assistance from an early age.

Some of the children were also excited to do gardening, such as planting, watering the plants, cutting dry leaves, and harvesting vegetables.

Recurrent gastrointestinal infection during the first 1,000 days is one of the main causes of stunting. The incidence of infection is closely related to unhealthy environmental conditions, such as the unavailability of or difficulties in getting access to clean water, proper sanitation facilities, and responsible waste management.

Thus, clean lifestyle, clean water supply, and proper sanitation are important for stunting reduction as they prevent gastrointestinal infection.

Development of monitoring and evaluation survey

The survey is aimed at assessing the nutrition knowledge, nutritional intake and feeding practices of pregnant women, and children under the age of 2 years who visit MindUps worldwide, with local adaptation by country.

The purpose of the survey is to follow changes in behavior and link to the knowledge obtained at the MindUp to confirm the usefulness and quality of the Heights and Minds materials and concept. The survey tested at the RRC “accurately measures the nutritional practices and knowledge during the first 1,000 days of life within a peri-urban setting in Indonesia”.

Additionally, it assesses whether: The survey is valid for the target population The survey is reliable The survey considers the local context Language, writing level and expressions used in the survey is appropriate and understandable for mothers attending the RRC The survey consists of a 6 parts questionnaire with a total of 48 questions.

By using the three platforms, RRC aims at reaching the middle segment of the community through social media messaging. Although the messages focus mainly on stunting and the first 1,000 days, other information such as healthy recipes, environment, and sharing of experiences are also shared.

The social media is more than just a networking tool, but can also affect how people think, act, and live based on the shared information. RRC aims at raising the awareness on the importance of stunting prevention by sharing educative contents about stunting, pregnant and lactating mothers, healthy lifestyle, parenting, clean environment and other stunting prevention topics.

RRC chose to use WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook because the high numbers of their users in Indonesia.

Although the users of each of the three platforms in Indonesia are less than YouTube users, the features are more flexible than YouTube which can only share videos.

All Instagram and Facebook messages developed are of very high quality and will be kept in a virtual library accessible in the MindUp at any time by visitors. There will be an easy search function applied. This will be part of the Heights and Minds Highway system FAQ format.

The challenge is that even though the account has reached the audience, there is limited further interaction, such as follow, likes, comments, and share.

Although this is expected, given in Indonesia culture women are still the main caretaker of the children, and therefore more likely to have interest in the content of recipe, parenting, etc. However, we realize the importance of reaching more men to promote that for optimal growth and development, it is important for both parents to engage with their children’s growth and development.

While Facebook has a larger number of users than Instagram, Instagram users have been reported to spend significantly more time when they navigate once they are in.

Thus, Facebook is better at distributing information, while Instagram is better at high volume engagement and spreading influence. For this reason, RRC is using Instagram more intensively than Facebook.

The content reaching the most users on RRC Facebook page is a video of RRC short introduction. It indicates that the audience prefers more dynamic posts, although further research to learn more is needed for Facebook development.

Local Communication RRC reaches the main targets (mothers) through verbal and virtual communication. The locals prefers interaction during casual gathering; for example during jointly exercise or ngaliwet (jointly eating liwet rice). The culture of doing communal activities has helped to invite others to participate in stunting prevention efforts through RRC. However, with the pandemic, it is super important to constantly reminder each other to always apply the health protocols such as to always wear a mask, to frequently wash hands, and to do social distancing.

Virtual communication is done via WhatsApp group chat to channel, discuss, and share various information including activity schedules. Currently, the group consists of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, mothers with children under 2 years old, head of RW 11, cadre mothers, RRC managers, and RRC founders. Since July, the WhatsApp group has become more actively used to replace routine activities that cannot be carried out as usual due to COVID-19 Lockdown PPKM (Pemberlakuan Pembatasan Kegiatan Masyarakat di Indonesia / Community Activities Restrictions Enforcement)

The HMF is currently collaborating with the IT company Service Heroes to build a system, the Heights and Minds Highway Platform.

This Platform will help MindUps to: Register pregnant women and young children to track growth and development; Plot data and interpret the growth of registered children and detect early signs of growth faltering; Link individual growth progress to counselling messages; Allows early access to training modules, digital material and online E-library for MUMs; Simplify MUMs administration and planning activities; and Provide real-time data to monitor and evaluate Heights and Minds concept

The Global Network

RRC is part of the Heights and Minds Foundation Global Network. The HMF plans to connect and empower all MUMs (MindUp Managers) in a Global Network where they can share experiences and learn from each other.

The idea is that MindUps all around the world can get in touch with each other via the Heights and Minds Highway Platform where they can post pictures, videos and share experiences. The aim is also to connect them through a video chatting service so they can show each other how the MindUp looks like and even cook together. By doing this, women in underserved communities may feel empowered as they will see that women in other countries might have to deal with the same problems as them. Moreover, it will broaden their perspective on the world. Automatic translation is being reviewed as a feature to be added in the global network.

The first attempt of connecting the MindUp in Senegal with the RRC was via a (virtual) cooking show where the women in the RRC were able to share their recipes with Senegal and vice versa. A video, merging both cooking shows into one to be shared across and serve as example, is under development.

Network development is a part of the experiment to build a model of stunting prevention from the community level as an investment for developing the community capacity. Stunting challenges encompass a wide spread of elements including infrastructure, financial capacity, knowledge and information, skills, and commodities.

Ruang Riung Ceria collaborates with various parties including with Bandung regency among others through webinars discussing the action plan for stunting prevention.

Bandung Regency participated initially in a webinar held by RRC titled: Collaborative Action to Reduce Stunting Rates at the Community Level which was held on Thursday, December 3, 2020.

Bandung Regency's interest in stunting prevention led to an initiatives to organize a follow-up webinar on Thursday, May 6, 2021. The initiative to organize the webinar supported by the RRC, was a part of an effort to eradicate stunting in Bandung Regency by taking into account the Bandung Basin ecosystem.

The title of the webinar was: “Collaborating on the Development of Food Knots to Prevent Stunting in Bandung Regency during the Pandemic Period”, and was attended by more than 180 participants.

The webinar discussed the importance of crosssector collaboration to prevent stunting, in which each sector contributes to the management and stimulation around the areas of quality of health and nutrition services, food safety and security, and clean water and sanitation.

RRC also collaborates with Gumuruh Village (Kelurahan) to support their stunting prevention efforts, among others by conducting cooking demonstrations, making homemade tempe, and oyster mushroom cultivation. Activities were done every 2-3 weeks, less regularly than those conducted in the RRC. Gumuruh and Rancaekek Wetan have organized a virtual training of Growth and Monitoring Promotion with Ramalis Sobandi, Ph. D as the moderator; and dr. Ilsa Nelwan, MPH (former WHO regional advisor) and dr. Puti Marzoeki, MPH (former Senior Health Specialist World Bank) as the resource persons, with materials from the HMF (Heights and Minds Foundation).

Aside from the webinars, the RRC also collaborates with Ciburial and Sekepicung Villages in stunting prevention through an SITH-ITB research.

The first floor is used for a rooftop garden of vegetables.

The garden is not only for producing vegetables for food, but also to introduce a method for growing crops in narrow areas. In addition, the rooftop can also be used for residents' activities.

The building uses portable solar lamps to save energy. In addition, solar lamps are easy to install and connect using wire, and therefore easy to move. Because the RRC building area lacks clean water, the plan is to install a drip irrigation system to save water.

Economic Context of the Region The economic context is shaped actively by the /city government to influence businesses to make investment and create jobs. In turn, this influences the region/city economic structure and its attractiveness as a location.

In 1980, Rancaekek Wetan was an agricultural area, where the majority of people worked as farmers. However, with the development of residences and factories around the area, many agricultural areas were converted into housing and industrial areas. Today, the majority of the male population in Rancaekek Wetan work as factory workers, while most of the female population work as housewives and some are engaged in community services/activities.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a dire situation, in which more and more workers lost their jobs, while aside from their regular household duties, mothers have to look after their children who has to stay home, when schools were closed due to the pandemic. This is one reason for RRC to not only function as a stunting prevention facility for the area, but also as a communal space to provide support to the local community socially, and sometimes economically, by distributing some food from the RRC garden to the mothers who come.

the Pillar of RRC

Although financial resource is needed by RRC, it's important to remember that the main force behind RRC is the people.

RRC is operating based on the ideas, knowledge, energy of the resource persons, the locals, and young professionals who walk towards the same goal, which is stunting prevention. Their ideals, grits, and perseverance cannot be measured in financial terms and therefore, the most precious and irreplaceable resource of RRC.

Business

Initially, to form a financially independent MindUp, RRC attempted to create a small business of selling some food items to the local community. However, the trial of selling mushroom rolls and mushroom sticks has failed to attract buyers. Further assessment is required to find affordable products suitable to local needs.

Strategy

Early Plan

Given the local life condition and capacity; it seems unlikely to have an RRC in full operation funded by local and RRC business. RRC spends a minimum of IDR 5,600,000/month for basic operations & wages. This has not included funding for further research and development. As such, funding from external sources is needed, not only for program sustainability, but also for program development.

Target A target audience is “a group of people defined by certain demographics and behaviour.”

These can include age, gender, job, interest, relationship, place of living etc.

Identifying a target audience provides a clear focus of, who the business will serve, and why they need the business’ goods or services.

Determining this information also keeps target audience manageable.

YTN will identify the target audience which can potentially contribute to RRC including philanthropists, NGOs, companies, the government and the general public; focusing on those that have the same agenda of stunting prevention.

There is an obvious need for further research to determine specific targets and to develop products to suit those targets to promote healthy lifestyle for stunting prevention.

Objectives RRC activities have reached the first and second target group. In line with RRC's inclusive concept, and recognizing that it is necessary to engage each family member in stunting prevention, there is a need to develop activities for the whole community (the third target).

Reaching out to more teenagers in the community is important, as they are the role models for the children and will be the future leaders of RW11 Rancaekek Wetan RRC needs to develop a business and funding strategy, and to establish a financial system for future adoption by the local community.

Process Documenting financial spending related to activities and research development, outside those managed by the RRC Managers, as reference for future development.

Intensifying virtual communication to continue increasing RRC's influence toward a healthier lifestyle for stunting prevention, especially during the COVID-19 Lockdown.

Support for the First Priority Target

The rising of COVID-19 cases in RW 11, Rancaekek Wetan and the Emergency Lockdown have impacted the households greatly. RRC decided to support the first priority of group (pregnant women, lactating mothers, children under two years old) by sending support basic needs and health goods. The package was sent three times on July 2021 and consisted of vegetables, vitamin, milk, disposable masks, bar soap, tempe, eggs, toys, biscuits and rice.

The high spread of COVID-19 could be contained until August 2021

The first scenario will allow RRC to gradually return to normal activities, which are reaching out to the first priority target and embracing the other targets with inclusive programs focusing on stunting prevention. The first year of operation continues to aim for developing a strong local structure supported by a wide range of network of knowledge, access to health care, food security and better environment.

The second scenario directs RRC to adapt the programs by widening the delivery of indirect programs, while putting in place better health and safety precautions to protect the people, cadres and RRC management. Some planned activities are; 1

The number of COVID-19 cases until July 2021 when this report was prepared has been declining, but the country is still in an emergency situation, and the impact on the second half of 2021 is still uncertain.

Therefore, the RRC core-team, describes two possible scenarios:; 1. The high spread of COVID-19 could be contained until August 2021 2. The high spread of COVID-19 could not be contained until August 2021.

Maintaining local efforts to prevent stunting and local community livelihood; The RRC building will become a hub for services and support to the community, while at the same time the management will be open for collaborative movement involving the local community and the cadres to support marginalized community.

Triggered by concern on the worsening condition of the people, while taking into account of YTN’s capacity, there will be program to provide support of basic needs of food and health care goods which will be an instrument to continue conveying messages and education on stunting prevention.

Expanding stunting discussion at regional, national and global levels

In reference to the Instagram progress until June 2021, it is important to keep expanding the audience and reaching out to passive audience to become active followers or even partners for further actions. Some on-going initiatives are activating the daily posting of Instagram story, and having a special guest discussion on stunting prevention issues twice a month.

Linking the Instagram and Facebook postings by having additional posting on Facebook with lighter language and small bite information.

The challenge of COVID-19 Lockdown is how to keep RRC running, so RRC won't lose the progress of influencing the locals towards a healthier lifestyle. For keeping our presence alive and keep track of the locals' development, an option is to start a public kitchen available to the locals to cook if they need tools they don't have at home, like an oven or a blender. Two cadres will stand by on the venue to help the locals operate around the kitchen and keep the place clean.

Supporting the wider stunting prevention program

Since the three webinars conducted during the preparation stage and the first semester of RRC initiatives, the founders are clear on the policy to place RRC as a part of the district, regional and national mainstreaming action of stunting prevention.

During the second semester of 2021, RRC and related partners will take part in at least 2 webinars; the international webinar of SITH on food security and stunting around November; and RRC own webinar on RRC model first year evaluation, most likely in collaboration with the Bandung District with its program on food security hubsng District program to combine it with the food security hubs.

Enhancing Virtual Communication

An option to continue influencing the locals without a physical meeting is by doing virtual activities

Virtual Cooking Together Activity It is possible to do a virtual cooking demonstration, but since locals may have limited access to devices such as a smart phone or a computer, it might be difficult to have direct communication (talking, conversing) via virtual meeting like zoom. An alternative will be for the RRC to share a video on how to make the dish and posting it on the WhatsApp Group of the locals. As a follow up, they will be asked to share their experience of making and tasting the dishes in the form or photos or videos. In some cases, there will be a package of ingredients for the recipe, for example, a package of ingredients for making jamu kunyit asam. The package of ingredients is not only to make it easier to try the recipe by themselves, but also because RRC is aware of the tough situation, that they might not have the money to buy the ingredients.

2 Virtual Exercise Together Activity

The virtual exercise will be run similar to the virtual cooking activity. The managers of RRC will send an exercise video, and the locals can use the video as the guide to exercise in their homes. Afterwards, they can share their experience on WhatsApp Group.

RRC for Indonesia's Independence Day

Ruang Riung Ceria conducted a photo competition for children, adults, and special categories (pregnant mothers, children under two, teenagers). The children also joined the Coloring Competition. Independence Day and/or stunting was the theme for both competitions.

Posters were installed at RRC and announcement was posted on WhatsApp group for the locals.

The competition was done at home and the results were sent via WhatsApp to RRC MindUp Managers (Teh Dinda and Teh Muti). The deadline was August 15, 2021.

RRC building was also decorated with Indonesian flags and flags of various colors to lighten the dark atmosphere of COVID-19 and brought encouragement towards better days through the festive ambience.

Residents can be divided into two or more groups for the activities.

3. Gardening activities in RRC with Kang Odoy can be done after women's exercise, every Sunday at 9 AM (possible participants are residents of RT 1 & RT 9).

4. Assisting community business development through workshops that can be held for selling value-added recycled products for the community, or holding a class on how to start a business (Teh Puspa, one of the mothers, can help with the content or be the instructor).

There can also be a follow up of helping with the marketing (within the local community, there are people in the production department and marketing/distributors who can help on this, with cooperation of the RT and possibly the BUMDES) 5. Strengthening cooperation with the RT to help socialize RRC activities 6. Reviving Karang Taruna, the youth group.

Most residents of RW 11, Rancaekek Wetan are rather passive, that has been made worse by the declining economic condition. Rewards, particularly those of economic value, might be required to entice community participation; another option is to include an entertainment element for the participants.

Garden Intensification

Food security is needed for stunting prevention. The lack of access to healthy food for the community is not hard to see. In RW 11, Rancaekek Wetan, only a warung/kiosk sells vegetables, and they are often not fresh. Another option is a vegetable hawker that sells fresh vegetables, but only come at certain times. The kiosk and the vegetable hawker also have limited vegetable options. Although the pasar/market has more types of vegetables, they are less favourable options because they located too far for walking.

Although RRC cannot solve this problem singlehandedly, several things can be done to improve the situation around RRC. An example is a Garden Intensification program that can increase the access to fresh vegetables & fruits for the people around RRC, especially for the first target group;
