A word from the President Stefan Grobler In the build-up to the renamed ARTSCCO Add a little of body text weekend, webithad to swallow the bitter pill that ARTSA would once again not be in the format Tablers have been longing for, for nearly two years. It is a date that every Tabler pens down in their diaries, and you would often listen to stories of how this one weekend a year is an unmissable event. Fortunately, we had the opportunity for both Incoming and Outgoing Assco Members to attend a weekend rebranded as the ARTSCCO Weekend. An opportunity for the Outgoing Association Council to finish their statutory duties and hand over the reins to their successors. Credit has to be given to

ARTSSCO 2021 - Be Someone Worth Following David Costine, ARTSA 2021 Convenor, for arranging a fantastic weekend in an extremely short space of time and still ensuring that we adhered to all Covid-19 protocols. After an exhausting two days that included the 4th Association Council Meeting, ARTSA Forums and AGM, the time had come for the 2021/2022 Association Council to take up their positions as the new leadership of RTSA. Fortunately, the Shadow Assco held in November of 2020 in Bloemfontein

Die Groot Vet Kombers Proe-Jek Louis Radley

RTSA was privileged enough to partner with OFM, the Sound of your Life to run an Alliance project known as die Goot Vet Kombers Proe-jek. The alliance project was run over the course of 4 weeks in 4 different towns in 3 different areas or provinces, which all fall within the broadcast area of OFM. The project entailed that OFM would do an on site broadcast in the relevant town with the team creating a drive-thru and sell vetkoeke

at a minimum donation of R35 each. The community would then pay the minimum donation of R35 and some would even pay more…..the largest donation was R10’000……. The team travelled in excess of 2700 km to the various towns. RTSA was represented by 4 tables situated in the Free State , Stnofs and Northern Cape areas, making it the 2nd biggest RTSA alliance project to the Winter Knight alliance with Toyota.

The project started in Vryburg on 10 June and travelled to Potchefstroom ( 17 June), Upington ( 24 June ) and finished in Welkom on 1 July on OFM’s 35th Birthday. The initial idea was sell 500 vetkoeke per day and the team ended up selling in excess of 4000 vetkoeke over the course of the 4 days……. The alliance partnership was able to raise R450’000 with Welkom 40 collecting R146 420, Potchefstroom 47 R126 856 , Upington 79 R107 555

The Year of A.R.T.S.A Wayne Stevenson

It all seems so surreal, from lockdown to government regulations and not knowing if we will ever see each other again for an ARTSA, but hopefully after two years, we all should cross our fingers and hope for the best that we might get the chance to pull this off seeing that we are now down to level 1 and will be able to host this for you. We are very excited to inform you that everything with the venue is now confirmed and in place and they can’t wait to host this event for us.

We are now in phase 2 of our planning, and my council is working around the clock to get everything in place, that we can hopefully launch the online Rondavel App registrations in a month’s time. With this you will be able to register and order regalia and we will be able to streamline the whole process with registration day, with orders as well as to pull in detail data for voting and clubs representing on the day with AGM, we hope to completely change the way forward with this process and to also get more details, seeing that we have to comply with Covid regulations as well.

This will be from 27th of April to 1st of May 2022 and Mentorskraal in Jeffreysbay is certainly the venue to pull this We have some big surprises off.

for the Hardcore Hut, but don’t want to give too much away and I think this will be parties to remember. The themed opening Thursday night will be Beach Party with a twist, so pack your boardshorts and fish slops, this might end up to be a “colourful” evening…..We are busy finalizing the accommodation on and off site and should be able to launch availability with opening of registrations and give through discounted accommodation options around Jeffreysbay as well. There will also be a shuttle service running throughout the course of ARTSA to and from the venue. Continue on page 2

Every now and again during your Table career, something truly awesome comes your way. In the case of Welkom 40, it was agent leman by the name of Buks Gradidge. Buks had advanced cataracts and severe myopia in both eyes because of the cataracts. Buks contacted us, and we started looking around for a solution. The initial cost would have been in the region of R34 000 which Buks could not afford. The value of Round Table is manifested in many different places, and one of the most tangible is the relationships that we form with other Tablers.

Welkom 40 contacted ex RTSA President at Pretoria 136. They have a project called Fight4Sight and we appealed to them for help. We had limited time as Buks cannot work as a miner until his eyesight has been corrected. Pretoria 136 did not hesitate, and we managed to get an appointment within a week. On 19 January, we took Buks to Pretoria for his appointment and surgery. The surgery on the 20 th was a massive success and Buks’ eyesight went from around 28% in his left eye to 95% postsurgery. Love everything table and exploring our fantastic countries and the small towns with amazing people in each town. Having the best time and making friends for a lifetime. We as a family can’t wait to get the year going and serve this amazing organisation and keep driving impactfulchange.

The introduction paragraph says it all about our incoming RTSA President Werner Swanepoel but we all know him as the 'GEES' bringer. Werner will be entering his three-year strategic plan as RTSA President which the organization will now 'mine' from what we build on the past two years. We have already seen growth in the organization since the start of implementing his strategic plan. Good luck Mr. Incoming Prez!

and Vryburg 72 collecting R69169. The marketing / time on air value of the project is approximately R1’000’000. Potchefstroom sold 900 vetkoeks in the first 20 minutes from opening the Vetkoek DriveThru and sold the most of the 4 tables. Over the space of 4 weeks of the project, OFM’s airtime was taken over by promotions and reports of the project.

From The President Imagine if you got what you want, every time without struggles, no hard work needed and no challenges. Some might be saying… that would be great… You would be weak! And then, when something hard comes up in your life, you wouldn’t know how to handle it, because you have never gone through anything that strengthens you. You can not GROW without struggle. You can not develop STRENGTH without resistance, without challenging yourself, without struggle. PAIN is your friend. Maybe not in the moment. But for the evolution of your soul, for the long term benefit of you as a stronger human being – pain IS YOUR FRIEND. If you didn’t have failures… If you didn’t have struggles… If you didn’t have disappointment, you cannot have strength, courage and compassion. How could you? Those qualities are MADE from your pain and struggle.

You were given pain because you are strong enough to handle it. You were given this LIFE because you are strong enough to live it. Because you are strong enough to drive though it. To THRIVE THROUGH IT. To inspire others through it. They will look to you and say: He did it, I have the strength to do it to. You are stronger than you think. You’ve survived all your challenges to this point… And you will survive whatever is coming. But next time a struggle don’t curse the skies. Know that it was sent for a reason and a lesson. It might be to make you stronger, it might be to teach you patience, it might be for you to show others your spirit, there is a reason. So don’t give up. You have a purpose in this world. And you will only find it if you keep going and keep GROWING.

Impactful Change RT 158 Driving Impactful Change P.G. Grove

Mariska Steyn is an education student at Kovsies in Bloemfontein and she is in her final year. She lives alone with her mother and with virtually no external support they work hard to survive. Mariska's mother is an assistant at a Doctors consulting room and Mariska works part time to ensure she had pocket money as well as assist her mother to put food on the table. She studied with a NASFAS scholarship that was suddenly withdrawn in December 2020. Mariska applied for a job at the University as a teaching assistant in order to stay financially independent. She also approached the Rapports Education Fund for a final year bursary and even though she was successful, they were unable assist her with her registration fees.

As a last resort , Mariska approached Bloemfontein 158 and asked for help to cover her registration fees on condition that she would reimburse Round Table after she had received her first salary. Not only did our hearts break, we were extremely impressed with Mariska’s drive to help provide for her and her mother as well as be successful despite her circumstances. We agreed to assist Mariska with the registration fees and wished well for her future. However, we all agreed that no payback will be necessary and suggested that she use the funds to make a difference in the community in her own way. This is what Round Table is all about, improving people's lives and making a # impactful change in the community. Please click on the link to see a special video by Mariska thanking Bloemfontein 158 for making a real difference in her life.

Soup Kitchen Paul Hoeksema

In less than a month Round Table 32 – Mossel Bay was able to collect a large amount of non-perishable foods from members and visitors at their clubhouse as well as a large and very generous onion donation from one of their brother Tables in the South-Cape area, Round Table Oudtshoorn 33. This forms part of the continuous Soup Kitchen initiative that Round Table – Mossel Bay 32 launched in April 2021 and enabled them to provide around 3500 meals (roughly calculated per 150g serving) for an estimated 400 people catered for every day. This particular food donation, which will form the first of many, was delivered to the ACVV Kenani Service Centre. From here it will be distributed to not only the 3 divisions of the centre but to 5 soup kitchens in the greater Mossel Bay as well. Sadly, as a result in many of these cases this is the only meal they will have for the day. In the aftermath of the Covid regulations and struggling economy, the government subsidies for ACVV Kenani was halved and with the ever-increasing prices of food and supplies, the pressures on these centres and soup kitchens are growing daily. If Round Table - Mossel Bay 32 managed to collect this out of a hand full of people in less than a month, imagine what they can do with the help of the community. Round Table – Mossel Bay 32 would like to request the community to get involved, to make a donation make a real local impact.

Unseen Battle Christo Bezuidenhout

When I started Tabling 10 years ago one of the requirements were to run a project as a pipeliner. I did not want to convene an already existing project, and decided to start something completely new. I had gotten involved with the Fight for Sight initiative through one of my fellow pipeliners’ wives who worked for the Centurion Eye Hospital. I was privileged to see what an amazing difference a 20 minute operation can make, and what value it adds to these kids’ lives. When they arrive they can only see movement at 1 meter, and they grow up thinking that their parent and siblings are just blobs. Afterwards, the excitement, smiles and jubilation when they can actually see details for the first time ever caught a heart string and the partnership with Fight for Sight started. The project evolved from a Cycle Challenge, to a cycle race. Flowing over into a Dinner in

the Dark concept and eventually has mutated into a Corporate fun “golf day” with a music show. In 2020 it was obviously difficult circumstances but the new concept has taken off and had a lot of good reviews. Going into my last year of Tabling I decided to make this a full year project and not just one event. Combining everything that Table holds dear and special. I will be travelling the country and visiting all the Active clubs in RTSA running up to ARTSA 2022. I will ask for support from all the clubs and ask them to donate a Table Pin. These active club pins will be placed on a special Pin board in the shape of the RTSA Map and eventually auctioned off at ARTSA 2022. On a personal level I will auction off a special Project coin at every club visit to the highest bidder. These coins are numbered only in the numbers of the Active Clubs , which means there is definitely only ONE!! So watch my FB page as I travel and collect these pins. I want to create a story of my Travelling year.

The Giant of the North getting in on the spirit of the project. The last piece of this project puzzle is corporate involvement. Over my 10 years I have met many companies and been involved with them for a lot of projects. Through their help this project will go to the next level and finish my Table career on a HIGH! The first of these partners have already come on board from day one. The Build It franchise has gotten involved and a sponsor of R50 000 from one of their franchisees with a group of 10 stores, has already realized! I will share more of this I travel and thank the owners of these stores on my Travels. Looking forward to seeing you all over the country and growing this project into Mega Project. Thami D Care Centre Paul Hoeksema

Wheel Chair Donation I would like to share something that happened to RT61 in April that made us love Table all over again... My wife, Deanne was approached early this week by a lady within our community who is desperately looking for a wheel chair for her son, aged 7, who has Angels Syndrome.

Johan Herselman

and Myself, at the lady's house so he can personally hand this over to the family! We understand that he respects the family and don't want to make to a big a do about it, that's why he wants to keep it small. We informed the family and they were overjoyed. We visited the family and got to meet little Aryan and you could just see the excitement in his eyes when he saw the wheel chair! Very heartwarming feeling to see peoples lives changing right in front of your eyes! Gents, if you have never felt the amazing feeling of a blessing to someone from someone and have the opportunity to be part it, then this is IT. People see what Round Table is busy doing and they see the love being shared out there and they want to be part of it, even if it’s small acts of kindness! People are amazing and to make a difference in someone's life just by being a Tabler makes it even more worthwhile.... The community needs Round Table in their communities! Find something good to do in all you do in Table! #impactfulchange and proud of it…

She asked me if Round Table can help and I contacted one of the other Tables asking them if they could assist as I know that they might have some funds in their Welfare account. We left it there as RT61 would not be able to help at this stage due to funds. Then something amazing happened.... While Deanne was posting an ad on Facebook about the Ladies Project (Bread-tags) she got a call from a Gentleman, out of the blue, who said that he wants to help someone and was thinking to "DONATE A WHEEL CHAIR OR SOMETHING" and he asked how can he do this together with Round Table.... Deanne then told him about the lady and he asked her to get him a price and more info. Dischem Store suggested one a model that would suit the child and the guy said that he will go there the next day and purchase it and then asked us to please arrange that he meets us, Deanne and

Children in need Gerrit Klopper

The idea round the R 2500 project is to have guests, pipeliners and newly inducted tablers exposed to process of identifying and investigating needs in the community as well as implementing a solution. With our project, Donald du Plooy, a newly inducted tabler identified a urgent need. Due to unforeseen and various circumstances, a grandmother is taking care of two of her grandchildren. Her grandson is 7 years old and her granddaughter is 3. As you can image, the list of needs was long, however we identified the following needs as most urgent and most important: 1) A pack of pull up diapers for her granddaughter. 2) Clothes. 3) 2x School tracksuits as well as a pair of white tekkies for her grandson. It is no secret, Bloemfontein 158 has a huge soft spot for children and yet again, it was a honor to make a difference in the lives of children in need.

Building on Education

Mark Kissler

The combined force of this team effort is testament to the love Namibians have for their country and the urge that transpires to make this arid ridden country a little better, one step at a time. Bet-el Primary School is in dire need of additional classrooms. Data provided by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture revealed that the school, since 1980, retains a double-shift system. This basically means that the relationship of available classroom space versus learners is extremely skewed. In essence the classrooms are insufficient to teach all pupils during the morning session and thus an afternoon session is presently in effect to cater for the educational requirements of all learners.

Grades 2 to 3 host 299 pupils alone. Research undertaken over the years on the topic of the doubleshift system of teaching and learning in primary schools has confirmed that learners attending the afternoon sessions are at a perpetual disadvantage with performance in mathematics and content-based subjects, especially during the summer months with high daytime temperatures. We are grateful to confirm that we can assist in solving the problem for Bet-el Primary School. Through the generous donation of Auas Motors, the vehicle subsidiary of the Nictus Group, with assistance from Isuzu South Africa, we as Round Table 34 are able to alleviate the double-shift system. A single classroom will suffice to teach all children in Grades 2 to 3 during the morning hours. A significant amount of N$ 170,000 was awarded by Auas Motors to Round Table 34. This, in conjunction with the youthful and visionary leadership team at Atenu Developments CC, who successfully quoted on the construction and were awarded the project, we are ecstatic on making life just a little better for so many children. Construction is to commence in due course once all paperwork is finalized. We look forward to sending out a 2nd report once the new classroom has been inaugurated.

Pampoen Project

Pumpkin Project

Kevin Fraser Last November we kicked off a heaviest pumpkin competition at a local school with the aim of encouraging kids to get their hands dirty and appreciate where their food comes from. Pumpkin seed and fertilizer was sponsored by our Forge Agri co-op, it was repacked into smaller packages and sold on to the pupils and parents. A total of R7060 was raised and donated back to the school. In March 2021 we got in touch with the PR dept. of MayFord Seeds and pitched the idea to them. Their response was enthusiastic and they immediately sent through a prize hamper. There is hope that more Tables will join us in this initiative and run this as one of their own projects. Please email hello@saniroundtable.co.za if you would like to find out more.

Prize giving was held at Underberg Primary School on Monday 19th April. What a fantastic response, a total of 67 pumpkins were entered and they weighed in at a combined 475kgs. Darius Blomerus entered a 19.1kg whopper and won the adults section, Logan van Huyssteen (a Sani 41’ers son) won the pupils prize with an impressive 15.2kg specimen. Thank you to Forge Agri for the seed, fertilizer and trophy donation, and to Mayford Seeds who sponsored some great prizes and their commitment to building this project with us. All the pumpkins where then distributed through an on-going feeding scheme we started with the Underberg Farmers Association in March 2020.

Helping our local heroes

Andrew Teare While many of us have been in some form of lockdown these last 12 months, there have been many heroes in our communities. The Western Province area has been hard hit, including our beloved community of Durbanville, and we owe so much to the doctors and nurses who have been saving lives. There are also some unsung heroes: the paramedics who have spent hours on the roads, picking up COVID-19 patients and scrambling to find a hospital, with the patients struggling to breathe. We heard from our local paramedics how they had to drive around for hours trying to find a hospital to take in a patient in critical condition. Durbanville 165 decided to say thanks in our own small way. Firstly, we gave these angels some wings, putting together energy packs for the local government clinic staff and ambulance workers of Netcare 911. One of the teams was about to embark on an 8 hour round trip to fetch a patient from a rural part of the province. Then at the next opportunity in our community, we all got together to donate much needed blood to the WP Blood Service.

If COVID wasn’t enough, a massive fire broke out on the slopes of Table Mountain on 18 April. The fire made international news as it destroyed historical buildings, required large scale evacuations of residents and burnt a large part of Table Mountain over 3 days. Durbanville 165 kicked off a quick project and, in less than 12 hours, we raised R12,000 from Tablers, the public and businesses. We must extend a special mention to the South Cape Area, donating R5,000 to the cause in solidarity with our area – a special gesture from our fellow Tablers. The R12,000 was used to buy medical supplies, snacks, cooldrinks, energy drinks and R6,000 worth of water for the fireman. This was distributed via Hoop, getting us multiple mentions on Bok Radio. We donated R1,000 to the Good Hope SPCA who are dealing with all the wild animals seriously injured during the fires. These last few months have really showed the #impactfulchange we can have on our communities.

RT 2 and RT 190 team up to provide mattresses

Jesse Rich Tholuthando is a children's home in Hillcrest that Kloof 190 has been working with for about 2 years. It is run by a lady named Cindy along with her 16 year old daughter who have dedicated their lives to this home. The home provides for 55 children in total and unfortunately the situation they were stuck in was that they had a severe lack of beds for the children. The situation was sitting at 33 girls sharing 14 beds, 20 boys sharing 12 beds and four baby’s who would have to share with the girls on their single mattresses. The situation was made worse by the fact that these current mattresses were of a low quality and extremely thin. Kloof 190 attended Durban 2’s social meeting on the 1st of April, where Jacques Lemmer explained the situation at Tholuthando. Durban 2 believed it was a great cause and it was agreed that Jess Rich of Durban 2 would liaise with Jacques in order to bring a proposal at the next business meeting (15 April 2021). The Proposal was for the donation of 27 mattresses from a supplier who Kloof 190 had already sourced and the proposal was subsequently passed, with the bonus of the supplier giving us 30 mattresses in total. The handover of the mattresses was a roaring success with Durban 2’s Vice Chairman Wesley Wells in attendance along with various members of Kloof 190. There were plenty of celebrations with singing and dancing as the mattresses arrived. Overall this was a very successful project and one that Durban 2 looks forward to working with again. The project also strengthened our relationship with our Kloof 190 brothers just up the Hill and we look forward to more projects together.

A long-standing tradition

During this event as well as every other blood drive that is held in Ficksburg it allows us, as tablers, to interact with the community and gives the community a chance to see as well as experience what Round Table as an organization is about. We would like to thank the Reformed Church of Ficksburg for providing us with a venue, Sasol Ficksburg for always sponsoring the cooldrinks and Super Spar FIcksburg for the rolls. I do not think much more can be said as to the importance of donating blood to save a life yet much can be said on how such a plain and uncomplicated event can lead to real impactful change.

Philippe Fouche

On the 7th of April 2021 at the Reformed Church, Ficksburg the long-standing relationship between the South African National Blood Service and Ficksburg Round Table 98 was once again proven true. This relationship has lead to thousands of pints of blood being donated over the years and 111 pints of blood on the day. The duties of our Table at the blood drive are simple, we braai and hand out a boerewors roll and a cooldrink to people who have donated a pint of blood. This seemingly undemanding act leads to, in my humble opinion, the community being more willing to give up their valuable time and donate a pint of life saving blood.

East London Easter Egg Spread Travis Fourie East London 1 held our annual Easter egg handout on the 1st April 2021. This is a longtime project of our table and is one that has a great impact on our community. Each tabler oversaw securing a minimum of 2 boxes each. We managed to collect a total of 60 boxes which accumulated to 1964 individual eggs, we also had some companies who generously donated to our cause, Due to Covid we were unable to pack the eggs into paper bags but we did Brand the boxes with Round table No1 stickers, thanks to our inhouse printing sponsor Terry-Andre. A special thanks to Warren & Ruan who took some time off to visit Canaan Care centre and deliver 5 boxes of Easter eggs on behalf of No1. On the evening of the handout a group of No 1 Tablers and their partners gathered and made their way to Frere Hospital hand handed Eggs over 20 boxes on total to have them handed out to the needy children in the hospital, McClelland Adult Centre where we donated 5 boxed which is what they asked for and a local charity called “helping those in need” which we donated the rest of the boxes as the look after up to 1500 kids throughout East London. The evening was a fantastic success and all the people that oversaw handing out were very happy that we could help those at are less fortunate and needed something good to happen. I would like to extend a big heartfelt thank you to all the Tablers and their partners who helped make this project a success whether by donating eggs, collecting, or spending time with us distributing the eggs to those in need.

Pretoria Community Centre Wian Vogel

COVID-19 has radically changed South African lives. Our community center have been particularly hit hard by the strict lockdown rules. Many people are facing a loss of income, food insecurities and health challenges. The pandemic left our community center to fight for its heritage and survival.

Wel213 was permitted to enter and view the facilities of the town hall and at same time donated 36 blankets and 5 Oximeters to the Rehoboth Covid Care Center. We can only hope that the early detection of oxygen level drops will help save lives. We also made a turn at the Rehoboth Old age home where we also distributed 5 Oximeters to the Old age homes to allow for oxygen level monitoring at the two Old age homes. Demonstrations on the use of the Oximeters where done at both places and the exchange of numbers to ensure we remain in contact with the organizers.

The country is now gradually opening up, economic activities are resuming and children are going to school. In this dark time our community center stands out as a beacon of hope and strong believes, we will conquer the battle ahead as proud men of this beautiful organisation. The unique challenges of the pandemic did, however, change the way our community center works for the better. Round Table members that worked in silos during other emergencies bundled their expertise and resources to form collaborative networks and assisting the community centre in its time of need. What keeps me going is seeing all of us coming together to support each other. Whether we personally know someone or not,

we are ready to make an extra call to support them. There are stories of friends driving miles to get an oxygen cylinder to a friend in need, of an elderly man giving up his bed for somebody younger, of people cooking food for patients at home, and of youngsters joining together with information on where facilities are available. There are so many stories of compassion and kind actions that it makes me believe in humanity once again, that “We will overcome this and we will overcome this together”. Our community center is our rock and pride. Pretoria community centre embark on the “Impact for change movement”. We gather all our resources out of all industries and we are busy fixing the community centre to open its doors for the public once the pandemic eases up. It makes me so proud to be a tabler when you see men coming together to achieve one common goal. TP 151 was appointed as our HR consultants to manage “Jerry” contracts and day to day responsibilities. We cleaned our store rooms, painted our business meeting room and donated much needed blankets and duvets towards the Winter nights campaign. Checklists were created to address all the building repair/maintenance work in and around the community center. We compiled lists of all our requirements and donations needed to upgrade the community centre to its glory days. The lists will be circulated around tablers to assist us where possible. I appreciate you, I'm proud of you and most importantly I love you with all my heart. Thank you for being my big brother’s and holding me in both your hands with the up most love. While people may come and go, you will be in my heart for a lifetime

Winter Knights

Tian de Wet

Bloemfontein 158

With the third wave and the economic pressure, the Winter Knights campaign for 2021 will be an uphill battle. Bloemfontein 158 has always been very successful in our previous campaigns so the pressure was on. As we are unable to be at our partners outlets in person, we knew we had to do two things, one, we needed to think out the box and two, we needed to punt this campaign on social media as never before. With myself and Hein Linde at the wheel Bloemfontein 158 approached companies in our community to have a Winter Knights Box for donations set out at the door. Once we have established where our donation boxes would be, we hit our advertising hard on Facebook. Our Chairman, Reinhardt Hedder managed to line up some local sports legends to provide us with a campaign video as well as assist with the social media advertising. Checkers in Woodland Hills were kind enough to allow us to man the entrance that had a big part to play in our success. After all the hard work we managed to pull off a great campaign. To be honest, we did not hit it out of the park like we did in previous years, however we were not far off. We also formed some new influential partnerships with established companies as well as local sports heroes who are keen to run with us again in 2022.

donation of R10 000 to the initiative.

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night with most of your roof gone. This nightmare became an unfortunate reality for many on the morning of the 30th of June in the Greater Mossel Bay area. Strong winds with gusts of up to 108km/h terrorized the region and left families residing in more than 20 now wind-ravaged houses vulnerable to the cold and windy weather. An emergency meeting by the Mossel Bay council was called to try and alleviate the distress. Round Table 32 Mossel Bay was fortunate enough to be part of the mitigation action and as a matter of urgency, allocated a sizable

A unified effort with the local Rotary & Mossel Bay Business Chamber raised a substantial amount towards materials and labour to address the immediate need by repairing their roofs before the next storm made landfall. As an active Table, Mossel Bay 32 is privileged to provide immediate and impactful change to their community in the true spirit of the national Winter Knights movement. Mossel Bay has since engaged in numerous donations to help fight the cold in our less fortunate community. We look forward to reporting back to the readers on these projects in the near future.

Winter Knights Distribution Universal Church Amize Adams

Its Winter Knights time again…Yes you know what that means. With winter knight only, a week away promotion of the project is very important. What better way then to promote the project with distributions of blankets. Welwitschia 213 has chosen to assist the Universal Church in Windhoek who does outreach programs to the needy. The UCKG has started their outreach programs a few years back and has since then assisted thousands of people with the donations they receive and the donations the church makes towards the cause.

Wel213 distributed 80 blankets to the UCKG on Saturday the 29th of May 2021 that will contribute towards the Community reach out program of the Church. The distribution of the blankets will be done during the week as through their outreach program. This will assist 80 people to fight the cold this winter. With Covid and the restriction and the real threat it poses to the community Wel213 had to look at other methods to assist the communities where we are not able to get to and this was one of the vehicles identified. We hope this will be a renewed partnership with the Church to help more people in a shorter amount of time.

Children’s Life Change Centre

Richard Becker

Namibia Area provided Winter Knights predistribution funds which needed to be converted to a handover. I and my wife (Brunie Becker) knew of an orphanage/centre for children whose parents cannot assist that needed help from our time in the Scout movement. Therefore, we set out to help them where we could. After we got the go-ahead we tried load all the handouts into my wife’s car – a challenge that posed impossible. My brother in-law gave us a hand with the his vehicle to help with the pickup. Once everything was brought to our house it occurred to us, or my wife rather, that the pillows are white and that we did not make provisions for pillow cases. After several calls to my mother in-law, my mother, my brother in-laws mother, and my wife digging through our stuff we got 40 pillow cases together in about 3 hours for donation together with the new pillows and blankets. After the pillow case dilemma the packing for the handover commenced.

We finished very late, but every pillow was in its pillow case, with an accompanying blanket in a bag. Our whole living room was full of all the goods and I felt tired, but very good that we achieved to get everything together. On Saturday 22/02/2021 Tamara-lee Pienaar came to our house with Ian’s bakkie and we loaded all the baggies on the bakkie. My wife and I then drove with her to their house to pick up Ian. Together the four of us were a little bit late to the social at Phillip’s house planned for thereafter, however we stopped at the Children Life Change Centre and did the drop-off for the 40 children in need. The children were all so cute, running up to greeting us in a friendly manner. While we were handing out, a little boy came up to Tami to get his share of the handover. The poor little one was smaller than his bag but he was so proud to have received it his and the smile on his face was priceless. We could not stay too long. As we drove off the kids were all waving and the couple taking care of them had tears of gratitude in their eyes. All the gratitude makes all the effort and running around so worth it.

Let your passion shine Mark Kissler

It is the time of year where induction dinners have come to a close, planning for the year ahead is completed, portfolio members have settled in and ARTSA 2021 is over. NOW is the time to get to work with all the projects commencing. The annual RTSA wide Winter Knights, our association project with the five Namibian tables working in unison is well underway. Some pre-distributions have already been sent out in order to advertise this fantastic project and gain the necessary media exposure and mileage. Let Winter Knights be an inspiration to all tablers, pipeliners and guests. It showcases how a mammoth project can be done no matter the tough circumstances. It promotes the public relations with the private sector, government institutions as well as the communities we assist. Why are you a tabler? What is it that drives your passion for the rondel? Have you been slacking of late? Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.

It is time to shine, gentlemen! Let each and every one of us be motivated to take on a project, to assist a fellow tabler with the project they are convening. Be the one who asks questions. Consider yourself for succession planning and taking on a new portfolio in the next year. Have that consideration be your motivation to improve on your aptitudes. We’re all human and make mistakes. There are times where we feel that obligations might become tedious and we lose interest. If you are ever in dire straits and don’t know whom to turn to – turn to a tabler. Pick up the phone and schedule a conversation over coffee. Invite a fellow member on a hike or ask to join in on a braai. Irrespective of whether your problems are in a relationship, dissatisfactory position at work or monetary in nature. Speak up, so you can have the assistance to have your problems tackled and sorted out. The brotherhood is there when you need it. So now, what excuse do you have not to perform just a little bit more and make this world a little better?

Several hundred individuals, ranging from little toddlers to retired senior citizens live here. It is a very poor community, albeit an upbeat one. For the safety of the tablers and to ensure no unruly behaviour of the masses we engaged with the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) who were more than willing to assist us. Officer Silas and his team welcomed us at their outpost close to the road block and escorted us to the informal settlement.

300! Mark Kissler

Yet another handover for our very successful 2021 Winter Knights campaign, this handover was definitely a very special one for 3 simple reason: 1. It was the first ever handover Johan has attended; 2. The number of beneficiaries far surpassed any other handover for 34 in terms of Winter Knights in 2021; and 3. Christo Murray was the convenor and took charge of the event. It was a Friday afternoon, the 16th of July. Winter was in full swing and we felt the urge of putting the donated funds to good use as quickly as possible.

We were met by the residents with high anticipation of the much needed blankets. The settlement is close to a riverbed and just days prior to the actual handover we received reports of morning temperatures of -15˚C. Whether this reading was correct or not, it was bloody darn cold in that week. Riaan assisted with the ordering of the blankets at PEP Stores whilst Johan and Mark were on duty to collect these and transfer blankets to the handover premises. Christo took charge of the overall handover and ensured that everything went smoothly. Once again we were so grateful to have received assistance from the Namibian community to make this handover a reality. Thank you, Namibia. You are one magnificent country and your people make it so very beautiful.

The recipients of a total of 300 blankets were the residents of the informal settlement of Kapp’s Farm, a community of people just 20km east of Windhoek close to the road block on your way to the Hosea Kutako International Airport.

A long-standing tradition

Marcu Kriegler

The turnout on the day was what we had hoped for. In donors and support, although we wanted a bit more tablers to participate in donating, some were preoccupied driving #impactfulchange elsewhere in terms of Winter Knights and food drop-offs. The day produced about 40 people consisting of donors, non donors and supporters, IN ONE DAY! The donors not only consisted of Tablers, but members of the public donating on behalf of their favoured table. It was good to see people coming together in effort to save lives by donating blood. Each pint can save up to 3 lives.

The feeling reviving an old project that has died out somewhat in the past brings warmth to my heart. To know that we can make it a big initiative again. The Pretoria collective blood drive was just the start. The plan going forward is to get everyone donating at the same time, with the same intervals to make it a mass blood donation event, and get a lot of people involved on the same day for the same cause across Southern Africa, which showcases the coming together for one goal: Saving the lives of our fellow South Africans. Be a hero, it's in your blood!

It was great to see Tablers, family of tablers and 41ers participating in this project. It only took most of the morning to drive the initiative, and after some socialising was in order to celebrate the success of the day, and to drive inter-table fellowship.

Blood Drive Marcu Kriegler

Blood donation is such an underrated activity. It requires only 30 mins of your day, and a pint of blood. Only 1% of South Africans are active blood donors. A pint of blood only lasts 42 days after donation, that’s why it is so important to actively and regularly participate in donating blood at your nearest SANBS to save a minimum of 3 lives after your 3rd donation. The first 3 times donating blood is a very crucial part in the blood donating process. It may not save lives yet, but it is where the journey of becoming an active donor starts. After the first 3 donations, your blood can be used to save a minimum of 3 lives who desperately need it. It does no harm to donate your blood, your body automatically regenerates the blood you have donated over a 2-3 month time period. And if you are one of the many troubled by the fear of needles, your willingness to save lives should overshadow that fear. The SANBS makes the process so quick and effortless, it’s hard NOT to participate. As a member of The Round Table, it is an excellent way of getting more and more people involved in the blood donating initiative that started so many years ago. As an active Tabler and donor, I want to reignite the passion for saving lives in each and every person I know, and who better than my fellow tablers.

Our previous blood drives this year saw great success, in May we managed to get 43 people from and on behalf of Round table to donate on the same day. The smiles from the SANBS staff filled all of our hearts with pride and hope, for this was only the beginning of our blood drive initiative. As for our 3rd blood drive of 2021, smaller in comparison to the rest of the year’s blood drives. A small number of Pretoria 136 members actively participated in donating blood at our preferred SANBS branch at Atterbury Value Mart. A quick and swift time was arranged at 9 AM and 4 of Pretoria 136’s members along with a guest and a Pretoria 136 41er Riaan Louw all together donated 6 pints of blood on the day. A small effort to say the least, because I believe an effort is still a difference made, and a difference made is a fellow South Africans life saved.

Feeding Homeless Rigardt Esterhuizen

As we all know the winter is with us and it is cold outside without a roof over your head. It is even worse when your getting cold, your blanket is wet and there is no food in your stomach. Paarl 44 got a cash donation and decided to feed the homeless. We brought bread, jam & peanut butter. We also took our blanket and clothing donations from winter knight and handed it out to the homeless with the bread. We as table spread the jam and peanut butter onto the bread ourselves and that was also a nice social between Paarl44. We want to thank NTT Volkswagen Paarl for the donation and support towards Round Table Paarl44.

Every drop of blood is a gift of life Rigardt Esterhuizen

The Western Cape blood bank made a statement that the blood levels are low. We as Paarl44 took it on us to make a difference in Paarl. We made posters and shared it on all social media platforms to convinced the Paarl community to donate blood. On the day of donating, we as Paarl44 were 4 tablers and the total amount was 115 for the day.

Blood donation Update 2021 Byron Westerdale Round Table Walvis Bay has over the past few years ran a Blood Drive in our Table, this is a way of giving back that just takes 20 minutes of your time, nothing else. Each unit of blood donated can be separated into its constituent parts and used to enhance the lives of at least 3 patients and save lives in the process Only 0.8% of the Namibian Population donates blood, this making our blood supplies in our country very low and during peak holiday times in our country, there is not always enough blood to assist those that need it.

RT 36 tries to hit the blood bank every 56-60 days as that is the time you need to wait between donations. We make each visit entertaining for the NAMBTS staff and fellow donors as we try lift everyone’s spirits as there are a few nervous donors now and then. During the month of June 2021, some of the Jukskei 217 members were privileged enough to attend the annual South Cape WinterCon meeting. Besides making memories, meeting new friends for the first time and learning from other Tables, we were treated to a RTSA session where Jukskei 217 was challenged with the question WHY??? · · · · ·

WHY do you do Table? WHY are you a Tabler? WHY is Table special and not just another Club? What do you give Table? What does Table give you?

These are some of the WHY`S were asked to all the Tables in the South Cape area. What made the session special was that Jukskei 217, sitting in the back, had an opportunity to view this whole play from the outside and see how we as Tablers can grow our organization and ourselves. We could not help but think to ourselves that these WHY’s are very good questions. So on the way back from our fantastic trip we got thinking on how can we apply this to our own Table and Tablers and how can we take the ideas from a RTSA level to a club level. Early on in the Table year, we decided that we want to have a Strategic session to develop our three year plan with key table performance areas and indicators to meet our goals. We challenged our members to contribute to this strategic session on the Public Holiday in June and link it with a nice social…I know a Public Holiday, but Jukskei 217 members picked up the gauntlets and gave their own time to assist, support and plan our Table’s future on their day off As with all conceptualization sessions, and even more with online sessions, it started off slow by asking the questions WHY, not only to members but also pipeliners since they will soon need drive the Best Young Men`s Organisation in the World. We entered the Strategic session with the goal of addressing the following key areas. ·Area 1: WHY? ·Area 2: WHO are we? ·Area 3: SWOT Analysis? After an intense opening session we dug down into really understanding our WHY’s. An immediate and interesting takeaway was the similarity between Jukskei 217’s views and those noted at the South Cape WinterCon. This might indicate that Table and Tabler’s are united as brothers across the country and world for the through their similar views and stances. In reflecting on the first session of the day we are proud to identify the three WHY`s that makes our table unique:

After reflecting our WHY in the first session we move on to identify the WHO WE ARE in the second session. We collaborated for about an hour and concluded with certainty that we are: A BROTHERHOOD CRAZY ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE WORLD! This gave me the chills and made me feel even more proud to be part of Jukskei 217 and Round Table as a whole. For our Table to Adopt, Adapt and Improve we really need to ask the hard questions and identify our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The last session of the day was our SWOT analysis and we as a Table identified the following:

The WHY, WHO WE ARE and the SWOT analysis provided a better understanding of what Table is about and WHO is Jukskei 217 not only for the Tablers that have been Tabling for a while but also for the new members and pipeliners.. The day was concluded with a very nice online social celebrating not only our achievements for the day but also the Youth of our Country. I want to thank everyone that made this day possible, special and memorable. This day laid the foundation for Jukskei 217 for many years to come and I look forward to asking some hard questions to ourselves, our area, our country and our organization to challenge the status quo to ensure we as Table are always asking WHY because if we don’t, how else are we going to ADOPT, ADAPT and IMPROVE.

Nothing as Past as a Past President…… Christo Bezuidenhout AS the dust settles after our 2nd Digital ARTSA I have had some time to reminisce and absorb the year that has been. The year I was privileged the serve as the 70th President of our Association. We started off the year with the 1st ever Digital ARTSA. Its’s great to be the 1st to do something, but this was maybe one you really don’t want to be remembered for. But in true RTSA style we gave it 100%. The trend of zoom meetings continued and my first 70 odd meetings were on a digital platform. Travels, area visits, dinners and other meetings and projects attended in my official capacity took me from Pretoria to Kroonstad, Augrabies, Parys, Groblersdal, Vryburg, Aliwal North, Middelburg, Oudtshoorn, Midrand, Port Elizabeth, Mtunzini, Yzerfontein, George, Benoni, Potchefstroom, Walvisbay and Ficksburg. For me personally it was an amazing privilege and a very humbling experience to lead the Association this past year. The privilege of travelling, meeting new friends and seeing beautiful places and be humbled by their generosity and the overwhelming respect that all our members have for the Rondel. New friendships were formed, and others were strengthened, but you cannot look past the amazing fellowship, friendship and love that this organisation opens you up to.

And then you reach your outgoing ARTSA and look back and cannot believe how quickly the year has flown by. The ARTSA weekend flies by with a whirlwind of emotions. Closing off your last ASSCO and the forums and then off course chairing the AGM. Handling all the curveballs that get thrown at you while trying to take a few moments to soak it all in. Constantly busy with something or discussions with someone until you finally get ready for the Gala dinner. That final speech where all the emotions flood to the surface as you thank your family for all their sacrifices before handing over to your successor and then enjoying a few drinks late into the night to finish it all off. It passes so quickly even though you try and slow it down….and then….you wake up on Sunday morning and that saying is the first thing that pops into your head…...Nothing is as PAST , as a PAST President. the Rondel. No one man, one ASSCO, one Area, one Table, Tabler or project is bigger than the Rondel. This Association will continue and for the short time you are part of it, you have to make the best of it and serve it as well as possible to ensure that it continues to grow long after you are gone. The only difference between Joe and any portfolio holder is that a Joe decided to put up their hand to serve on a different level. And if we continue to bring forward such great leaders that have come before me, and that is also now following me, we cannot go wrong and we can continue to grow, get stronger and leave deeper footprints in the communities we serve. The phone isn’t ringing. There are not messages from the convenor about what is going on. No unanswered questions from area chairman and no missed calls from random Tablers. It all comes to an abrupt end and the silence is deafening. You start to wonder if you made an impact and whether you lead by example. And the one burning question inside…Did I hand over the portfolio in a better state then when I took it up. That is all every portfolio holder should strive for. But you still wonder as you enjoy breakfast all alone and then pitch up to the 1st ASSCO as the IPP and you realize that the wheel just keeps turning. The gears keep clicking over as the new guard has taken over and are running the show now. Without a blip on the radar, without a jerk of the knee, without a speed bump, the machine that is ROUND TABLE SOUTHERN AFRICA just keeps pushing forward. And it hits you…. While we are HERE. As a portfolio holder or just Joe Tabler, we are merely custodians of

Gentleman, we are all different and start this journey for different reasons. But, we are brothers. We are Tablers. We are part of the greatest young man’s organisation in the world. We have it within ourselves to be the change we want to see. We have the collective passion and will to make an impactful change in our communities, and the lives of people around us. In the lives of our families and friends. Grab it with both hands and make sure that when you look back, you don’t regret anything and you can undoubtedly say …. Tabler and proud. Thank you Round Table Southern Africa for the privilege and honour. Thank you for the friendships and all the challenges that has helped me to grow. This Association has done more for me and my family than I can ever repay. Don’t waste a second of the time you have as an active Tabler. What you put in will never match what you get out. Yours In Table

Where’s Waldo Amize? Mark Kissler

Waldo travels to everyday places – such as the beach, the ski slopes and the zoo. The book features 12 detailed 2-page illustrated spreads of the different locations. Somewhere amid the crowded scene is Waldo and readers are asked to scour the detailed illustrations to locate the lost traveler. Each scene is accompanied by a postcard to the reader from Waldo, who introduces the scene and comments on his travels. Waldo sets out on his journey equipped with 12 items to help him on his travels. He carries a walking stick, kettle, mallet, cup, backpack, sleeping bag, binoculars, camera, snorkel, belt, bag and shovel. As Waldo journeys from location to location he loses one of these item, and asks the reader to locate the object left behind in each scene as well. The similarities are evident. Undeniably evident if one considers the above excerpt. The glasses, the everlasting smile, the “walking stick” conundrum and always dressed in the same attire.

Well, granted, Amize prefers his suit over Waldo’s red and white striped wardrobe with blue jeans. And now we are confronted with the similitude of losing objects! The problem, though, is that the lost object is the entirety of Amize himself. How dare did we lose him? Are you confused? Okay, let me enlighten you: Amize is the Ironman of Welwitschia 213. No, he pretty much is Welwitschia 213. However, we at Windhoek 34 consider him not a guest – we consider this brother an honorary member of 34. He is there for all meetings, whether business or social, attends handovers and is the integral and delectable puzzle piece at braais and other outings. You get the gist, don’t you? He is basically part of the concrete foundation of Windhoek 34 of our time. By profession an attorney at law for the Namibian government in the Office of the Prosecutor General, he rarely misses one of our events. If he does, he’ll notify a delegate of 34 in advance for his absenteeism. Such professionalism is to be expected from a man who practices jurisprudence. So now, dear reader, I want to explain the mystery to you: on April 6th, Windhoek 34 hosted their monthly business meeting at the clubhouse. Nowhere in sight was Amize, our esteemed compadre. We were about to commence our meeting at 18:15 sharp and none of us had a clue on the whereabouts of Senõr Adams. Nonetheless, we went about our meeting. It was very productive, might I add. However, it was strange to not have Amize in our midst. Neither could we make jokes with him or about him, nor could we count on his seemingly endless wisdom for guidance on protocol. [...]

[...] What I am trying to convey is this: Amize, we love and appreciate you. Please come back from wherever you are! We’ll even apologise if we hurt your feelings, haha. To the reader: This “report” is intended in good faith and for your amusement and that of Amize. Credit goes to Gerhard van Eeden of Hochland 154 for coming up with the idea – thank you very much. I hope you all enjoyed this tale of fellowship literature.

Brotherhood Mark Kissler We all celebrate varied types of festivals throughout the year. Some are very enormous and magnificent festivals that are almost celebrated by everyone, while others are not so fabled but do hold a significance. Among the myriad of not so fabled festivals is brothers day that celebrates the true spirit of brotherhood and pay the due homage to all the brothers we have in life who make the life worth living. This day was on the 24th of May 2021. To have a caring and loving brother is absolutely blissful. The very thought of having a strong brother who is always there to have your back gives a lot of strength to any sibling. Brothers are a reflection of their fathers and also one the cornerstones of the family. There’s nothing like the bond between brothers. And “brothers” doesn’t only refer to people born to the same parents.

A brother is anyone you can depend on, who you will do anything for. Brotherhood as a larger concept entails uniting all of humanity. It is about finding it in your heart to truly care about your fellow human beings and build them up, while allowing them to lift you up too when you need it. “You cannot see brotherhood; neither can you hear it nor taste it. But you can feel it a hundred times a day. It is the pat on the back when things look gloomy. It is the smile of encouragement when the way seems hard. It is the helping hand when the burden becomes unbearable.” – Peter E. Terzick Thank you all at Windhoek 34, for being brothers!

Lekker Kroonstad RT40 Raids!

Jurgen Schoeman Welkom 40 was not the best raiding Table in the 2020/2021 year. Incoming Chairman, Igor Scheurkogel, decided that we needed a head start on the year. On 15 February, 5 Tablers piled into Hennie Breytenbach’s bakkie and made our way to Kroonstad. After the 2020 year where the guys really missed each other, the conversation ran wild and loud. Stephan Theunissen regaled us with some of his best jokes and one-liners. We arrived in Kroonstad, raring to go.

Unfortunately, we were a bit early, so we had to make do with a bit of alternative entertainment. We settled next door at the Police Club to wait for the Kroonstad guys. Once we were allowed in the meeting, it turned out to be a fun night with a lot of laughter and a Sergeant (Justin Boone) who took his duties very seriously. It was a most enjoyable meeting and I think we will probably raid them again this year, just for fun. Thank you to Chairman Pierce Bothma for welcoming us and to Kroonstad 42 who fed us at no cost. We left Kroonstad with happy hearts and a few well hidden souveniers. Kroonstad 42, you are most welcome to come and fetch you items from us at any time!

Projects RT32 Fighting for the voiceless! Paul Hoeksema The oceans are not given to us by our fathers but lent to us by our children. Plastic dumped in the ocean kills countless wildlife including whales, dolphins, turtles & seabirds across the globe. On Saturday the 24th of April, Round Table Mossel Bay 32's Beach Cleanup, with the help of volunteers, managed to remove & dispose of a considerable amount of trash on a short stretch from the Hartenbos main beach to the river mouth. The project aims to clear our coastline of potentially deadly plastic waste. The environmental initiative will be held on a regular basis to help in the fight against the devastating effects of ocean pollution. We would like to thank everyone that joined us in the betterment of our spectacular coastline. Please our Facebook page for more information on the next Cleanup.

Rebel Conspiracy supports RT 158 Zack Du Preez On 29 November 2020, Rebel Conspiracy together with Route 66 Bloemfontein, held their annual Rebel 500 run where they ride and do 500km route in order to qualify for prizes. Roughly, 220 bikers tackled the road together and despite the Covid-19 regulations, the run was a great success and we joined Rebel Conspiracy at their clubhouse for a braai.

Despite the hard times we are in, Rebel Conspiracy do all they can to better their community and once again, Bloemfontein 158 was the chosen organization to receive a generous donation of R 10 000.

Communing in Community Thabang Maahlo

As a member of Round Table, there is a lot of talk about community and the role we play within it. Goodwill sometimes feels like a distant thought until you’re faced with it as it is often overshadowed by the sense of comradery that comes with being a part of Table. In the few years as a Tabler, I participated in my fair share of socials, events, and projects as one does in fellowship but none of them truly felt like my own. My investment was from the perspective of having the best interests of the Table in mind, “This is important to Table and Table is important to me, so this is important to me too”. This was the mindset I had towards some of the projects; which is not bad because it allowed me to focus on the common goal but dare I say it is a narrow mindset. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity of running point on a project which I found gave me a greater sense of personal investment and responsibility. As Sandown150, we had a surplus of Covid-19 masks and I was tasked with finding a community that would put them to good use. With the assistance of my partner, I got in contact with a local organization called Smile Foundation.

Smile Foundation is a non-governmental organization with the mission of assisting children with facial abnormalities, to receive corrective reconstructive and plastic surgery through the assistance of South Africa’s Academic Hospitals. The Smile Foundation team is working diligently towards achieving the second phase of their vision: to install burn units in hospitals like Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital. They have a small team of dedicated individuals that run the day-to-day operations at Smile Foundation, but if you’d like to get involved, there are many ways to assist them by making a donation, volunteering your time, or referring a patient! Over the space of a few days, a couple of phone calls, and a Zoom meeting or two, I presented the NGO to the Table. After some heated conversation and value propositioning the masks within were released to Smile Foundation. Through the presentation process, I learned the value of communing in a community and how different people may appreciate different values in the same thing.

Coffee and Cars Thabang Maahlo Situated in the epicenter of two long-running roads that cut through a monochrome business park, there is a picturesque cafe with beautiful wood-finished tables kept by glass walls that are painted with subtle greys and whites. On its terrace, there are more tables and a lot of sunlight. Even with all that sunlight, you can still appreciate the incandescent lighting that gives warmth to the cold winds that barrel around the tall buildings of Illovo. Grate Café is the daily caffeine dealer for the white-collar workers that fill those buildings. This was the site of Coffee and Cars, an annual event that intends to collect donations for Oliver’s Village in the form of blankets, clothes, money, and non-perishable foods. Oliver’s Village is a self-sufficient community completely disconnected from the national energy grid that runs community-focused projects: Early Childhood Development Computer Training Feeding Program The morning of Coffee and Cars is usually very cold, although I think it’s more the buildings blocking out the morning sun than it

Charity Ride

Regardt Van Der Merwe We as Round Table Kirkwood 78 decided to do the Ride4Charity 2021 to dedicate it to Anette Esterhuizen. Anette is from Kirkwood. Anette lost her leg in 2019. After she walked to the shop in town she felt there was something in her shoe and it started off as a little sore on her feet. The sore got bigger and bigger. She went to the hospital and they diagnosed her wrong with only giving her pain pills. So at the end she lost her leg just underneath her knee. For a Prostese it would cost her R50 000. She came to us for help. Anette raised R12 000 on her own. The ride4charity was were Regardt vd Merwe from Kirkwood rode 502km on he's mountain bike for Anette. The route was from Kirkwood to Steytlerville, Steytlerville to Willowmore, Willowmore to Steytlerville, Steytlerville to Jansenville and from Jansenville back to Kirkwood. Total ride time was 24hours. Words from Regardt "It was the coldest ride i ever did. Temperature started at -5 and at night it stayed at below - degrees. But all that kept me going was to raise the balance of R38 000 for Anette." Lize Oosthuizen my fiance rode a total of 180km and Johane Niemann rode a total of 300km with me. Marinus and Ansie Rautenbach from Algoa 108 was my backup at night and my Sister Melanie and Neil Harvey was my backup during the day. At the end we raised the full R38 000 outstanding for Anette to get her Prostese. To see the appreciation on Anette's face was priceless when we told her we raised the money for her. To see how the people from the public opened there wallets for Anette was just amazing. It was a privilege for me to have done this for Anette and for charity.

OFM Groot Vet Kombers Project Jurgen Schoeman On the 1 st of July, Welkom 40 in association with OFM and Empire Square Super Spar hosted the final installment of the OFM Groot Vet Kombers Project. The vetkoek was made, the setup was done and the Welkom 40 Tablers, Louis Du Toit and Louis Radley gathered at Empire Square to await the masses. We were somewhat taken aback by the first rush of hungry Welkomites, but with the efficient help of the OFM team we prevailed. Welkom came out in droves to support us. We planned for an initial 1000 vetkoek to be sold. At 4pm we enlisted the help of Empiere Square and Freshbake and got in another 200 verkoek. A Trench to Save the Turf Philippe Fouche The golf club is a corner stone of Ficksburg’s community yet in recent times the club faced a new and daunting challenge – cattle, yes that is correct you did not read that wrong, cattle. To understand this one must first understand the geographical location of Ficksburg as a town, it is nestled right on the border of the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho with our nearest border post being less than one kilometer away from the gold club. This has led to numerous cattle herders from Lesotho allowing their cattle to graze on the golf courses

grounds. A fence was in place yet it is as simple as owning a pair of pliers to bypass this obstacle, so a new and radicle solution had to be found and quickly. The solution that arose was to dig a trench along the length of the golf courses borders as the cattle cannot pass this. Thus, the golf day project arose, it was a successful day with 57 players participating as well as boerewors rolls and steak being sold to all in attendance. We would like to thank all the sponsors of the day which are Gooi, Ja Sec, Credo Guardian, Sasol, Steam Bakery, Spar, CFW Wholesalers, Tractor & Diesel, Toyota Ficksburg, Whitakers Agency, Export Unlimited, TBS Brokers, Anonymous Doner, Express Foods, Julie Salon, Pioneer Foods, Ficksburg Abattoir, NST Purified Water, Kopano Textiles and Ficksburg gym. The community came together in force so as to save the golf course, I feel that this project serves as the perfect example of Adopt, Adapt, Improve.

Table News

2021 Table of the Year Kevin Fraser Saturday 17th April is going to be remembered as one of the great days in Sani 152 history. We were, and still are, so proud and humbled to have received the Past Presidents award for Table of the year at the recent AGM. There is a special feeling that comes with being recognised for the hard work that not only Sani Round Table did, but the entire Sani community. A Table without the support of their community will really have a tough time driving #impactfulchange. Our relationship with the community is the reason we managed to achieve so much this year and we are forever indebted to them. It goes without saying that we also had the support of numerous Tables this past year and we thank you all. Our Chair, Tian Keet, used an analogy comparing this to winning the Currie Cup, where at the beginning of the season all teams have a realistic chance of lifting that cup, except there are 120 teams in this division. Needless to say that night we partied like we did on the 2nd November 2019. Thank you to the past Pres for recognising our effort, it has cemented Sani 152’s position as the premier welfare organisation in our district.

Algoa 108 New Clubhouse Paul Ferreira At long last Mr Marinus Rautenbach – “The Godfather’s” vision he had in 2018 became a reality. “Algoa 108’s own Clubhouse to call Home” After all the years of dreaming, planning and numerous discussions was taken into account. The building of our Clubhouse started on 09 February 2021. As all members could not wait anymore we had our first meeting in the clubhouse on 25 February, using quite a few power leads for much needed electricity. In less than a month the structure was completed and now we can start to concentrate on all the “other” finer details. We were honoured that our Past Area Chairman of 2020/2021 Mr Johan “Cheetah” Bruwer open our clubhouse on Friday 05 March at the start of EP AGM weekend. We also officially hosted our first project at our clubhouse on 03 April, a sign of great things to come. Thank you to all that has been involved to make this a reality.

The clarity of the rear-view mirror Arno Kotze My name is Arno Kotze, a proud past-Tabler (as of 28 February 2021) currently serving as an Honorary Member of Pretoria 136. Mostly to get Pretoria 136’s PRO off my back about submitting several articles about this and about that to the Inkundla, I asked Igor, Round Table Editor-at-Large, for permission to do a two-part article covering everything! As with everything in life, the rear-view mirror is always clearer than the windscreen! As such, I’m fortunate today to be able to clearly account to you, Joe Tabler, the absolute #ImpactfulChange that Round Table has had on me and all past members alike! I, like so many other immediate past Tablers, stand here today humbled by the realization of how small we actually are in the bigger scheme of things! In retrospect, how truly honored we were to have been in a position to have been able to receive the Rondel from the giants before us, to have been able to wear it on our chests for a while and to now to be able to pass it on to the next generation of Tablers! I admit myself jealous to those Tablers staying behind and those Tablers yet to join, because today for the first time ever the words: “Adopt Adapt Improve” hurts! I finally grasp that I am the end-product of those words! This organization swallowed me whole, shaped me, etched the Rondel on my wrists and made me comprehend, admittedly even though I am upset about it, that it is only fair that I would only ever be part of this life changing organization for that exact number of years that it needed to define me as a ‘better man’!

As past Tablers we stand here today as complete as Round Table wanted us to be! We can only hope that we applied our organisation’s motto with some degree of success towards our fellow Table Brothers, our communities that we call home, our families and selfishly, ourselves as individuals! Trying to forget Round Table is like trying to remember someone you have never met. The Round Table cliché of you join for the community service but end up staying for the fellowship has never rung more true, in my mind, than today. In our limited years together we have seen more, lived more, been more and served more than most other men will see, live, be and serve in a lifetime. No amount of words will ever be enough to describe the level of appreciation! Next Month: Part 2 – The clarity of the rearview mirror and the importance of sunscreen!

Buffalo Induction-muur Trek Aandag!

As jy lag is jy sag.

Succession Planning

The growth is evident. During our September council meeting Namibia Area Chairman Jens van Vuuren presented the number of increase in tablers for Namibia. Whilst this is a more than adequately brilliant start into the future of Round Table one may not forget the importance of grooming our latest inductees into respectable members of society that will lead on the charge at Round Table for us and the generations yet to come. That pointed out, the year is slowly drawing to a close with the last Area Meeting being held in a few days from now. Christmas party planning is commencing and we are all very keen to take a much deserved break in December. Our current 34 Vice Chairman Marius already has to make plans on the matters of who shall hold office of which portfolio in 2022. This is never an easy task to employ the correct team as the council needs to be balanced between experienced tablers and the young ones, those who appear to have never ending amounts of energy yet still require the guiding hand of the oldies around the table and the 41ers. There are seven basic steps to consider during the ongoing process of succession planning:

3. Let them know and explain the stages (not all members are destined to become the chairman for their table, but inform them on the process to progress from being a biy to being a man). 4. Step up professional development efforts (do your best to make table better and set a standard which others want to maintain or even outperform). 5. Do a trial run of your succession plan (allow the members to take charge or nudge them towards taking on a little more responsibility to enrich their enthusiasm). 6. Integrate your succession plan into your annual strategy (plan ahead and groom the future leaders of this organization). 7. Think about your own successor (whom would you like to see to take over your role next year). So with the above in mind please consider your path of being a small but very integral part of Round Table. All good things take time but start the process now and you’ll be amazed by how much you can achieve for yourself, your table and your community. Success(ion) is a matter of planning.

1. Be proactive with a plan (always keep in mind where you wish this organization to move forward to). 2. Pinpoint succession candidates (talk to members and trigger their interest in portfolios and projects).

Letters from Tablers Story of a Pipliner Dewald Niemand “Round Table is an institution of freemason guys as they gather regularly, wear medals and regalia and have weird conventions”. This is the mindset I initially had of what round table is all about. I have searched the internet for a better explanation that would proof my initial thought. I decided to contact a table 9 March 2021 through Facebook and see what will come of it. At this point it was my ever curiosity to find out more. I ended up contacting Round Table PE West 142. I immediately got a response on Facebook and so the once in a lifetime journey was born, at least for myself. An invite was extended for me to come visit them at their next meeting, scheduled for 17 March 2021. During the initial two weeks before meeting the members at their Clubhouse, I did further reading, engaged with the Chairman of RT PE West 142 and the evening of 17 March 2021 was here. I was outside the clubhouse and wondered what I will experience. At this point I went in uncertain but with an open mind. I was introduced to all the members and the meeting, a project meeting, took place. At this point I thought it is not as bad as I thought as I love to help communities where I can. The weeks passed by so quickly until I was formally asked if I would like to continue the path of becoming a member bymeans of entering the next phase of pipeliner or if I would like to remain a visitor. Decision time! What to do?

“The journey from the outside seems to be rather simple to me: Step 1 à Get Invited to a Table as a visitor [This is the most important step because without an invite you cannot visit] Step 2 à Attend a few meetings to show dedication [They will then ask you to become a member]” The above quote is my own simplification at the time in my own ignorance of the bigger picture. I learned through the interaction with the tablers that being a tabler is not joining some cult or being a freemason. It is about togetherness and unity to facilitate community upliftment, fellowship with like minded guys from diverse backgrounds and sacrifice to put others needs above your own. Round table and by extension RT PE West 142 are an honorable organization I have come to respect and I can relate to. My name is Dewald Niemand, a 33-year-old, who chose to become a pipeliner as of 5th Of May 2021 and who will aspire to become a full member soon. Time is not of the essence but changing a community one project at a time is of the greatest importance couple with fellowship. The journey is such an enriching one that I fear anyone not joining this journey is losing out the zest of life.

Making a difference in One Person’s life Wian Vogel Matters Dear Brother’s, One of the perks of being part of our wonderful organization is the fact that you can pick up the phone and with one phone call you have all your brothers to assist someone in need. Our aim is Impact for change. We sometimes forget that impact for change can also be a simple thing as Smile. And a smile we definitely did get. I was recently approached by a loving mother that wanted to give her child the best birthday party ever. The family was tremendously affected by the Covid -19 pandemic. But with the little money they had left they wanted to make this day very special for her. The mother met me at our Community Center to look at the venue to see if it will work for the birthday party. Little did I know that her daughter had a chromosomal condition called down syndrome. I was honored to meet Cindy on that day. She looked at me and said, “I only want a 30th Birthday party with my family and friends” This was an eye opener for me, and right my hart crumbled. Here you have a beautiful 30-year-old woman that only wants a birthday party.

With lockdown in 2020 this was not possible for her, and as lockdown processed money also became an issue. Something in me changed that day and I offered them the Community Center for free. My only request was to take the money that was set out for a venue hiring and spend it on Cindy. To make this day the best day ever. We at RT136 donated a cake towards the party and we were honored to present Cindy with the cake and also sing for her on this beautiful day “23 October 2021”. Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This additional genetic material changes the course of development and causes the characteristics we have associated with Down Syndrome. While behavior, mental ability, and physical development varies from person to person, many individuals with Down syndrome grow up to hold jobs, live independently, and enjoy normal recreational activities and quote: A brother is a friend God gave to you, a friend is a brother your heart chose for you. Other than a parent’s love, I feel that there is no greater bond in love than there is between brothers.

The Sergeant At Arms Mark Kissler To keep order in a meeting requires a man of rank For punishment of those who obtusely disobey and play a prank Not to worry, he is here, the Sergeant at Arms Chesley will remember, his brains alarms The memory of a delectable concoction, not quite a fancy drink It was the pickled onion and Zorba that almost put him over the brink On the evening of the 2nd of June next to funky town in Khomasdal Took place the meeting of 213 in Welwitschia’s spacious kraal So overwhelming the presence of tablers from Walvis, Windhoek and Hochland Yes, you guessed it, the sergeant has his roots in Deutschland The German employed to do what he does best Exterminating attendees’ rudeness though he himself was a guest The honours of Sergeant bestowed upon him by no other than Amize He graciously accepted the Chairman’s request to serve and to please When men are many, loud and merry And you realise the coloureds left at home their cherrie You’ve guessed correctly, in session is a Round Table meeting And the Sergeant gave most tablers a slight hint of a ‘beating’ However, when the offences are over you realise the meeting has come to an end And together we share one last drink, Mark’s famous but secret blend We all had fun and more than just a simple laugh High in June is Welwitschia’s attendance graph
