MusicFest-Aberystwyth combines Music Festival and Summer School in a heady mix of festival concerts presented by an international line-up of artists who lead, in tandem, an inspirational summer school programme. It is a delightful fusion of experience and learning; of performance and appreciation. The engagement of audience, student, and artist alike creates the unique community atmosphere of MusicFest — refreshing, exciting and thoroughly inspirational. Throughout the week internationally renowned artists in residence can be found coaching ensembles, leading workshops, giving masterclasses and performing in the Festival concerts.

As well as the Artistic Director, internationally renowned soloist and teacher, David Campbell (clarinet), this year’s artists-in-residence include: Nicholas Jones (cello), Head of Strings at Chetham’s School of Music; Graham Oppenheimer (viola); Philippa Davies (Flute); Veronica Veysey Campbell (Voice); Sarah Field (Saxophone); John Metcalf (Composition); and Paul Archibald (trumpet and brass).

2009 Summer School Courses include Solo Violin/Viola/Cello, String Quartet, Wind Octets, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Voice, Composition, Conducting, Jazz, and Brass. All course are open to student and adults alike however the Clarinet and Composition courses are especially suited to adult participants.

Held in the award-winning Aberystwyth Arts Centre, the festival’s concert programme is characteristically innovative and original, and will include performances by the celebrated duo Guy Johnston (cello) and Tom Poster (piano), the Southbank Sinfonia, the award winning Solstice Quartet, the winners of the Dyfed Young Musicians Competition (some of Wales’s most exciting and talented young players) and all of the artists in residence.

PRACTICAL PSYCHOLOGY FOR MUSICIANS Held on the sea front, in a room with views over the sea in the Old College, this revitalising course is open to all instrumental and singing teachers and performers.

It is relevant to teachers who teach any age or ability, individually or in groups, and to all performers whether they are experienced or reluctant.

Through a wide range of experiential workshops, with time to explore the local coast and countryside, course participants will be able to deepen their awareness and understanding, enhance their practical skills and deal with any personal or professional issues in their music teaching, learning or performing, and they will also be able to relax.

Adapting to suit the particular interests and needs of those present, topics will include: Understanding Pupils, Teachers and Parents, Dealing with Dynamics How Pupils Learn, Teaching for Learning, Group Teaching, Reducing Stress Emotions, Motivation & Practice, Problem Pupils, Parents & Politics, Ideas for Teaching Improvisation & Playing by Ear, Using subtle energy: Imagery, Visualisation, Thought, Words and Touch Inner Authority, Communication, Technique, Anxiety & Safety in Performance There will also be performance opportunities, and Course participants have free entry to all Musicfest concerts, masterclasses and events.

DIRECTOR and COURSE TUTOR Lucinda Mackworth-Young MA GTCL is a pioneering consultant, lecturer and writer in psychology for musicians. She is also an experienced concert pianist and teacher.

Luicinda puts psychology into relevant and practical forms to inspire and refresh music teaching, learning and performing. One of her visions is for all who learn to play the piano to do so not only through note reading, but also by ear and through improvisation, so becoming truly versatile and spontaneous as musicians. She runs courses through her association, Music, Mind and Movement, provides course work for the leading professional development courses run by the Associated Board, the Incorporated Society of Musicians and the European Piano Teacher’s Association and was appointed EPTA UK’s Director of the Practical Piano Teaching Course in 2008. She is a freelance lecturer and she is a consultant on the website www. practicespot.com/problemspot. She writes extensively and has had many articles and chapters published in Rhinegold, Faber and ABRSM publications. Her highly successful and readable book: “TUNING IN: Practical Psychology for Musicians” came out in 2001.

ACCOMMODATION Aberystwyth University accommodation is in single rooms in pleasant, self catering student flats, a short walk along the sea front from the course venue. Or you can book independently. TRAVEL: Trains go to Aberystwyth via Birmingham or Wolverhampton. However a car is useful for the duration of the course, recommended routes are available on request.
