Two bass-baritone favourites: Rossini’s bravura ‘Là del ciel nell’arcano profondo’ and Mozart’s deliciously comic ‘Non più andrai’. The sparkling romance of Rossini’s La Cenerentola Overture – his colourful re-working of the Cinderella legend – provides the perfect curtain-raiser for Respighi’s joyfully animated The Birds with its chirpy hen and surprisingly sophisticated cuckoo. The Swan of Tuonela is gossamerdelicate offering transcendental respite before the lullaby-like Berceuse and stirring Finale from The Firebird.
