2016 Military and Defense Brand Enrichment Guide
Letter from the Editor-in-Chief It’s hard to imagine a more complicated time than today for developers of military systems. Due to tighter defense budgets, the DoD and defense primes can’t settle for anything less than getting the most for their allocated funds. With 2016 accommodating an election year, an entire additional layer of uncertainty enters the equation for those watching budgets. The U.S. strategy toward rebalancing their force to the AsiaPacific region adds new demands for long-range shipboard and airborne C4ISR and communications systems. At the same time leaner budgets have kept the focus toward upgrading existing vehicles, aircraft and ships rather than focusing on new start programs. But as embedded computing technology advances, both legacy form factors; and new architectures and approaches have their place. System developers have to consider legacy formats with upgraded components. While at the same time taking advantage of the kinds of technologies flourishing in the consumer market – like cloud computing, tablet interfaces and virtualized data center processing. In our recent C4ISR panel at RTECC San Diego – many of our distinguished guests from the largest defense contractors in the area expressed their expanding need to
“futurize” our military force while balancing budget, time to implement and internal staff resources and training. The good news is the embedded computing industry excels and is built to provide solutions for legacy platforms upgrades. And because of their computing designs expertise, suppliers in our industry are highly innovative in adapting all kinds of consumer and civilian technologies for defense use all while doing it cost-effectively.
New for 2016: Tech Recon: Jeff’s Picks The Tech Recon section blends staff-written and contributed articles to connect readers to the best information to help them create cost-effective solutions that meet mission requirements. In 2016 this section will directly leverage Editor-in-Chief Jeff Child’s decades of experience cover embedded computing and electronics for the defense market. Jeff will share his insights and choices of the best solutions and strategies a variety of topics like rackmount systems, anti-tamper electronics, FPGAs, power conversion and more. This section will also feature carefully selected contributed articles in line with the monthly section topic.
Editorial Sections 2016 Special Feature
There are a lot of nuances unique to the defense industry. Long development and deployment cycles leave no leeway when it comes to choosing the right technologies. There’s a balance between integrating proven solutions and introducing new innovations. To meet the requirements for the platform, system designers need to understand which technology trends are most relevant to the military—not only about the “latest and greatest.” This section helps sort out which technologies offer the critical mass, market longevity and physical attributes suited for military system designs. Articles highlight the important technology trends and place them in context for readers.

Audience
And with our print circulation you don’t have to feel insecure about your ad getting caught up in tightly woven cyber security firewalls.
Every good ad buyer knows they are not buying a place for their glossy full page. They are buying access to the perfectly balanced audience for their products and services. We’ve honed COTS Journal’s audience over the past 15 years to be one of the most important and influential available to technology companies seeking to affect the buying decisions of customers in the military and defense electronics market.
What’s special about the Military & Aerospace audience? They are difficult (and getting more difficult) to influence. Increasingly cyber-security standards have made connecting with mil/aero engineers and design influencers challenging and expensive. In 2016 email marketing and social media will take a budgetary backseat to more traditional forms of advertising and marketing within the mil/aero market.

COTS Journal is the Leader in Print
COTS Journal provides an awareness of the best technologies and products required for the design and development of embedded computer-based systems for the military. Such systems span the whole spectrum from benign applications to the most rugged, missioncritical gear the battlefield, sky or water demands.
System Development
Data Sheet
Our team saw this marketing trend early on – and has continued our strategy of
The system test and software development phases are for defense industry some of the most challenging phases of system development. This section analyzes the tools, trends and products that smooth efforts like military software development, ruggedized test and security assurance. Articles here include topics like shock and vibration testing, cooling, safety-critical standards, EMI/RFI and form-factor comparisons.
Launched last year, this revamp of our popular product roundup section focuses on a different narrowly defined area of technologies each month and provides readers with a comparison of representative products in that category. A new bullet point style format aids lets readers compare products feature by feature. The online version provides links to the actual product data sheets—making this section a rich resource for military system developers.
