Arkansas Tech Un Discover what’s next for you at ATU With a community of approximately 12,000 students taking classes through campuses in Russellville and Ozark, Arkansas Tech University offers a stackable degrees approach that creates multiple access points to higher education. NCAA athletics, vibrant programs in the arts and numerous community services initiatives are just some of the ways that ATU serves and partners with the residents of the Arkansas River Valley.

NEW DEGREE OPTIONS

ATU students are defining their path to success through a variety of new academic programs. New undergraduate programs of study in chemistry education, computer science education, electrical engineering biomedical option, environmental science, game and interactive media design and physics education debuted on the Russellville campus during the 2016-17 academic year. A new online Master of Business Administration degree will welcome its first cohort of students during the fall 2017 semester. Bachelor of Science and Associate of Applied Science degree programs in cybersecurity are also scheduled to begin at ATU in the fall 2017 semester. The new programs are among more than 120 degree options available to ATU students in Russellville. “We are already recognized as a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education in the State of Arkansas,” said Dr. Robin E. Bowen, president of Arkansas Tech. “Adding these programs makes us even stronger in those areas while providing students with access to in-demand careers of today and tomorrow.” More Arkansas high school graduates chose to major in Page 18 n 2017 Welcome

STEM programs at Arkansas Tech over the past five years than at any other institution of higher learning in the state. Bowen went on to note that the three new education degrees will help the state and region address teacher shortfalls in tough to fill positions. “The computer science education degree is in step with Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s leadership on creating a generation of Arkansas kids who can code,” said Bowen. “It is our intention to produce licensed teacher candidates who can answer that call and make Arkansas a hub for technology careers in the decades to come.” Graduates completing the electrical engineering biomedical option will be prepared to apply the concepts and principles of engineering to careers in a variety of health care disciplines. The environmental science degree will create opportunities for graduates to work in government and private industry. The program will include courses in animal and plant taxonomy, geographic information systems and environmental assessment. Successful students in the game and interactive media design program will acquire the skills necessary to work in the video game and entertainment industries. Other career paths for graduates of the program could include animation, simulation programming, web design and interactive visualization construction.

CAMPUS LIFE

The Office of Campus Life at Arkansas Tech offers wide-ranging opportunities for all students to become involved. Campus recreation, Greek life, leadership programs, orientation, outdoor recreation, registered student organizations, service initiatives and spirit squads are some of the programs that connect Tech stu-

dents to each other and the world around them. On Track is an undergraduate co-curricular experience designed to enhance student development beyond the classroom setting, encourage students to network socially among peers and to include students in traditional and signature university events. Each semester, a map of events and activities are available to students categorized by interests. Undergraduate students who choose to complete all seven tracks become eligible to apply for an expenses paid trip following the completion of the last track. Recent destinations for On Track trips have included Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago and

Los Angeles.

LIVING AT ATU

Arkansas Tech offers 16 housing facility options for its students. Apartment living, suite-style residence halls and traditional residence halls are all among the options for living at Tech. Regardless of which residence hall students live in, they all benefit from educational and social programming that is planned and implemented by their peer resident assistants. More than 500 residence hall programs were offered at Tech during the 2015-16 academic year. These programs complement the classroom educational experience and build a sense of community.

Two permanent collections donated to the university are on display in the gallery, the Pfeffer Collection and the Arch H. Gould Collection. The county is also home to three school districts, Clarksville, Lamar and Johnson County Westside. The Jasper School District also has a presence. Johnson County was formed from a portion of neighboring Pope County on Nov. 16, 1833, and was named Johnson honoring the first territorial judge of Arkansas, Benjamin Johnson. The county is home to several historic places of note, including the county courthouse, the MissouriPacific Depot and several historic homes. Whether a visitor’s interests are in the outdoors, history or art, Johnson County offers plenty to make a trip worthwhile.

Johnson County has it all Named for Benjamin Johnson - the county is rich in history In November 1829, Pope County was formed from a portion of Crawford County. A mere four years later, Johnson County was formed from a portion of the young Pope County. Named for Benjamin Johnson, a territorial judge from 1820 to the state’s admission in 1836, the county is 676 square miles, bordered by the Arkansas River in the southern part of the county and mountainous regions in the northern part. Johnson descended from an established family in Virginia. His education was in the law, and, after the admission of Arkansas as a state, Johnson used his education in his position as federal district judge until his death in 1849. The temporary seat of justice was, as directed by the act creating the county, to be at the home of Elijah Alston of Spadra Bluff, a pioneer of the area. In 1836, three men were elected commissioners responsible for choosing the site of the county seat: Abraham Laster,

Elijah Alston and Lorenzo N. Clark. A resident of Spadra Creek offered to deed a plot of his property four miles up Spadra Creek if the county seat was located there. After much discussion on the opportunity, commissioners agreed that the seat be located there only if it be named Clarksville, in honor of Lorenzo Clark. After that meeting in 1836, Clarksville was announced as the county seat, where it has since remained. Surveyors were soon at work in a forest with a single objective — turn it into a town suitable for a county seat. Regions in the new county thrived, as steamboats began to travel the river. In 1837, the first court was held in Clarksville in a town building, as a courthouse wasn’t

built until 1841. Near the courthouse, a stone jail was built to hold prisoners. The county soon began to turn into communities, as schools, churches, hotels and retail businesses began to pop up countywide. On Dec. 21, 1848, a proposal to incorporate Clarksville as a town became law. Although initially many commanding officers of the county were sent to fight in the

Mexican War, following the war the county saw more growth. Residents from Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky moved to the new region, and a great deal of them brought their African-American slaves with them. In the years following, mills began to spread across the county, and farming began to thrive as well.

welcome to Pope County Located in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, Pope County provides a beautiful backdrop for a variety of industrial, farming and recreational activities. In the early 1800s, the Osage claimed what is now Pope County as part of their hunting grounds. The area became part of a Cherokee reservation in 1817, but a new treaty moved the Cherokee into Oklahoma in 1828. In 1829, Pope County was the first Arkansas county to be formed out of the former Cherokee reservation. Home to 62,547 residents at the latest census, the county is the 13th most populous in the state. Municipalities within the county include Atkins, Dover, Hector, London, Pottsville and Russellville. Russellville, the county seat, is home to 28,533 residents. The county hosts five K-12 school districts. Arkansas Tech University, an accredited four-year university located in the heart of Russellville, was founded in 1909 and currently offers more than 70 degree programs. In addition to strong educational programs, Pope County is also home to a diverse labor force. Several Fortune 500 companies have facilities in the county, including Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, ConAgra, Dow Chemical, Tyson Foods and

International Paper. Thousands of people are employed by a wide variety of manufacturers in the area, with products ranging from aluminum foil to aircraft components. Pope County is also home to Arkansas Nuclear One, Arkansas’ only nuclear power plant. Life in Pope County is not all work and no play, however. Residents and visitors may take time to relax at one of Russellville’s city parks or relax at Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge or Lake Dardanelle State Park. The state park visitor’s center, located on the shores of Lake Dardanelle, features an aquarium, a turtle touch table and state-of-the-art touchscreen information kiosks. The park also has rental bicycles and kayaks available and is a popular destination for fishermen, campers and sightseers. After a day at the lake, visitors may enjoy taking a stroll in downtown Russellville. Don’t miss the historic Shinn Building — erected in 1847, the edifice was the first store constructed in Russellville. The city also hosts the Downtown Art Walk, where downtown businesses stay open after hours and host local artists and musicians. No matter the season, visitors to Pope County can always expect to find friendly faces and a warm welcome.

From the judge Welcome to Pope County, one of the most beautiful counties in the state, with the Ozark National Forest to the north, Lake Dardanelle to the west and Mount Nebo towering magnificently in the distance. With the fertile River Valley lying parallel to Interstate 40, the Union Pacific Railroad and the Arkansas River, transportation is available for area industries and businesses. Excellent school systems located within the county offer quality education for grades K through 12, and Arkansas Tech University offers an outstanding higher education program. Medical facilities are equipped to provide good care and treatment and many churches fulfill the spiritual needs of area residents. Recreational opportunities are available year-round — including hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, walking trails, water sports, youth and adult ball leagues and golf — all of which make Pope County one of the most desirable places in the state of Arkansas to live; you are welcome to join us.

There’s no place like home but we’ll never stop trying to make our residents feel at home with us. We offer quality, full time care from a staff who respects both your health care needs & your need for independence. The history of Pope County really began before the county was a county and when the designation of the territory as Arkansas Territory was just a gleam in the eyes of early settlers. Pope County’s history started in June of 1813 when Revolutionary War veteran Maj. William Lewis Lovely established a Cherokee Indian Agency along the banks of the Illinois Bayou west of presentday Russellville. It was located about a mile above where the bayou joined the Arkansas River. This area was near the center of Cherokee settlements in Arkansas. Lovely, a native of Ireland, was the first of four Indian agents in what later became known as Pope County. The burial place

of Lovely, who died in 1817, and his wife, Persis Brown Lovely, are now beneath the waters of Lake Dardanelle. Persis Brown Lovely of Middleton, Conn., died at the age of 71 on Jan. 18, 1842, at the home of pioneer settler Kirkbride Potts near what later became Pottsville. Virtually all of the Indian agency area is today under the waters of Lake Dardanelle, as is the area of Dwight Mission established seven years later along the Illinois Bayou. In 1817, an Indian village was established at a site later called Galla Rock on the banks of the Arkansas River south of presentday Atkins. It later became an important river port town allowing access to the interior of Pope County. The town gradual-

From the judge Yell County was established by the state legislature in November 1840. The county covers an area of about 930 square miles. Yell County was named after the second governor of Arkansas, Archibald Yell. There are many diverse industries in Yell County, but most revolve around agriculture, such as timber, poultry, cattle and crops. Tourism and recreation play a major role in Yell County’s economy. The area has many lakes and mountains and is part of two national forests. Lake Dardanelle, Nimrod Lake and Blue Mountain Lake all offer a variety of outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, skiing and swimming. The crown jewel of Yell County is Mount Nebo State Park. It rises 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River Valley and has cabins, campsites, picnic sites, a swimming pool, hiking trails and the most breathtaking view of the surrounding valleys. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to Yell County or, as we like to say, “The Free State of Yell!” Welcome and God bless. — Mark Thone Yell County Judge

for a time after their arrival, The former Ouita area of Lake Dardanelle State Park was renamed on June 1, 1997, in memory of the legacy of Cephas Washburn. The city of Russellville’s Recreation and Parks Department supervises Cephas Washburn Park, which includes picnic and camping sites and a boat-launching ramp. The U.S. Highway 64 West arm across the Illinois Bayou, locally known as the causeway, was officially renamed Cherokee Crossing by then-Russellville Mayor Phil Carruth. It was renamed and dedicated to the memory of thousands of Cherokee Indians who called the valley their home until their forced westward migration. Hardships along the trail resulted in its becoming known as the Trail of Tears. Part of the infamous Cherokee Trail of Tears came through Pope

County, both by river and by the old Military (or Wire) Road, which linked Little Rock and Fort Smith. Today’s U.S. Highway 64 follows much of the path of the old Wire Road. In 1828, the Cherokees were forced to move to their permanent homes in Oklahoma, then called Indian Territory. Pope County became official on Nov. 2, 1829, when it was formed from part of Crawford County. Pope was the 19th county to be formed in Arkansas Territory and the first in the former Cherokee Territory. Pope County originally included all of present-day Johnson and Yell counties, most of Logan County and parts of present-day Scott, Conway and Van Buren counties. Parts of Newton and Perry counties also were a part of the original Pope County area. Pope County was named for John Pope, the third governor of the Arkansas Territory. A new county needs a seat of

government, and a temporary county seat was established at John Balinger’s home on the Arkansas River near Scotia, 12 miles west of present-day Russellville. Courts were held there for two years. A permanent county seat was located in 1830 at the Scotia home of Judge Andrew Scott, appointed a federal judge for the Arkansas Territory. Scotia, named for the judge, was the first of five county seats in Pope County. About 1829, Norristown, a river port town, was established by Samuel Norris on the banks of the Arkansas River south of presentday Russellville and across the river from Dardanelle Rock. The sole trace of where this town was once located is the old Norristown Cemetery now on privately owned property. Tombstones of some of the early settlers, including that of Samuel Norris, remain in the cemetery, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The

Norris name lingers today with Norristown Mountain, or Norristown, in western Russellville. This river port town had begun to decline even before the railroad came through the county. In 1833, the county seat was moved temporarily to Dwight Mission when part of the western section of Pope County was taken away to form Johnson County. The next move of the seat of county government was in 1834 to Norristown, which was in the center of the county. No courthouse or other county buildings were ever erected in Norristown. In the early 1830s, the first settlers moved to an area of northern Pope County, which later became Dover. Arkansas became a state in 1836. On Dec. 5, 1840, Yell County was created from the part of Pope County south of the Arkansas River. In 1841, the county seat was Please see SEAT | Page 47

However, the county records were saved because they had been secretly removed from the courthouse during the early years of the war. The records, hidden in a cave north of Dover, were brought back to Dover after the end of the war. Military companies were formed, and the men of Pope County marched off to fight in the Mexican War in the late 1840s and in the Civil War of the 1860s. However, Pope County had its own war sparked by the violence of the times and the period of Reconstruction after the Civil War. Reconstruction came hard to Pope County, and what has been

named the Pope County Militia War was an outbreak of violence and murders from 1872 through 1873. However, the Militia War really began in October 1865 with the ambush murder of the first county sheriff after the war. He had been an officer in the Union Army. The Militia War can be said to have ended in 1875 with the arrest of a man for an 1872 murder. The charge was later dismissed. During the 10-year period, six elected or appointed county officials were murdered. Others killed included the commander of an Army detachment stationed

at Dover during the height of the Militia War violence and a number of private citizens. Village on the Prairie The seed of today’s Russellville was planted in 1834 when J.C. Holledger built the first house on the Chatas Prairie, a two-story structure of hand-hewn oak logs. The next year Dr. Thomas Russell, a native of England, arrived on the prairie with his family and bought the Holledger house. The house was located on a corner of what is today the intersection of West Main Street and Houston Avenue. The Village on the Prairie

was in 1842 named for Russell, the first doctor to settle in the area. Some people wanted to name it for Jacob L. Shinn, a prominent businessman who built the first store in Russellville. In the 1870s Shinn built a twostory brick store building, which still stands today at the southeast corner of the intersection of West Main Street and Denver Avenue in Russellville. This structure is among a number of historic structures in the downtown historical district of the city. The city was incorporated June 7, 1870, but the town really began to grow after the railroad went through the county in 1873. In the more than 160 years that have passed since that first house, Russellville has grown into a thriving industrial and business hub at the crossroads of two major highways — State Highway 7 and U.S. Highway 64.

RussVegas Half M

Our towns helping the Arkansas Children’s There’s no question the RussVegas HalfMarathon has grown since its inaugural season three years ago. The easiest way to tell is in the money raised for Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH). In 2016, the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Angels, which is a group of racers who try and raise at least $150 for the hospital, raised around $50,000. As of March 3, 2017, this year’s group of 103 angels raised $27,000. RussVegas race director Chris Olson said last year’s group, which was made up of 60 members, raised around $7,000 by that same time in 2016. The RussVegas event spans April 21-22 mostly centered around the train depot and includes several events. Here’s a look at how each event has grown from last year to this year (through March 3). The first RussVegas Half-Marathon attracted over 1,000 runners to a community that proved it could do more than host a 13.1-mile race. The event began as a race and grew into a festival by its second year. Now, it spans more than two days and includes the Glow Run 5k and Kid’s Fun Mile the day before. Olson believes a key difference in RussVegas and other fundraisers is his team’s efforts to put forward the best race possible. “We don’t just want to be a fundraiser,” he said. “We want to be a good race. A lot of times, races are either centered around fundraising or the athletes, and we try to do both. That’s why we’ve been able to do what we do.” For an event this large, citizens of RussellPage 68 n 2017 Welcome

ville should make a few preparations even if they don’t plan to run. “Plan for extra traffic that morning,” Olson said. “If you’re going anywhere near the route, you might want to leave earlier than usual. We do allow traffic to move through, but not when there are runners. We have people at every intersection that will either tell you the best alternate route or allow you through if there are no runners.” But more than that, Olson said the event banks on community support. “Running this is a big accomplishment for people, so anything we can do to show community support is big,” he said. “We want people in the neighborhoods cheering them on. If you’re having your morning coffee and you live on the route, step out and cheer for them. If your seventh grader is practicing his sax, and it’s driving you crazy, send him outside. The runners will love that. Really just do anything to distract the runners from pounding the pavement the whole time.” RussVegas had 26 spirit stations in 2016, which were small stops along the way where friends and family could congregate to cheer runners along, play music, offer water and hold encouraging or funny signs. “When we go to expos, that is what people talk about,” he said. “They love to see how people in the community come out to support the race, and Russellville has been wonderful in past years.” Visit www.russvegashalf. com if you would like to volunteer, register or for more information.

State Parks The Arkansas River Valley outdoor gems

hose visiting the Arkansas River Valley in search of outdoor recreation will be thrilled to see the variety and abundance of facilities the area provides for this type of activity. Through the combination of Arkansas state parks at Lake Dardanelle and Mount Nebo, in addition to the a number of projects provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the activities are numerous for those enjoying the outdoors; whether it be spending the day fishing, taking in the sights of a nature trail, or enjoying a night of camping. Rare is the occasion through the spring, summer and fall when there isn’t a weekend fishing tournament taking place on Lake Dardanelle. The 34,300-acre body of water stretches westward from the Dardanelle Lock and Dam into Yell, Pope, Johnson, Logan, and Franklin counties and provides excellent waters for black bass, crappie, catfish, walleye, bluegill, bream, redear and white bass. Lake Dardanelle is noted as one of the state’s premier black bass lakes, with Largemouth ranging from 5 to 7 pounds commonly caught. It contains various habitats — coves, tributaries, rock piles, Page 76 n 2017 Welcome

shallows, flats, jetties and islands — that this type of fish finds attractive. As temperatures begin to warm in late March, black bass love to move up into the creeks and streams. These bass fishing areas are Spadra Creek and Little Spadra Creek near Clarksville as well as the Shoal Creek area near New Blaine. Black bass are attracted to the areas where 5- to 10-foot depths jump up to 2- and 3-foot flats for spawning purposes, and numerous fish ranging from one pound and up are found there. The Illinois Bayou, which runs into the east end of the lake, is another attractive site for black bass. The

dark shale bottom located near the Interstate 40 bridge provides warm water earlier, and many anglers take advantage of that to catch early black bass. Cradled between the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains, Nimrod Lake has proven popular with fishers and hunters since it was completed in 1942. It is the oldest Corps of Engineers lake in the state. The most popular fish harbored in the waters of Nimrod Lake are crappie, largemouth bass, bream, catfish and white bass. Anglers have become accustomed to large slab crappie tugging on their hooks and making their bobbers

dance at Nimrod. In-season hunting is permitted throughout the lake area except in or near parks. A 2,400-acre green tree public duck hunting area is available on project lands and 3,800 acres are managed for propagation of bobwhite quail and upland game. Those who enjoy sports are not alone in appreciating Nimrod. There are seven parks nestled along the lake where a family or individual can picnic, camp or just relax amid the groves of tall, sweet-scented pines. The parks are equipped with tent and trailer spaces, tables, grills, fire rings, playgrounds, fish cleaning

stations, boat launch ramps, trash cans, municipal water, electricity and showers. Nimrod is conveniently located adjacent to State Highway 7, which is a National Scenic Byway. The most popular of the trails in the area is the Bona Dea Trails

in Russellville, with an estimated 172,100 visits to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project in 2000. The facility is for day use only, with hiking and interpretive trails located near Lake Dardanelle, with the two being separated by Lake Front Drive.

The Meadowbrook self-guided trail is located inside Lake Dardanelle State Park. The three-quarter mile trail is considered easy with regard to hiking difficulty, with 30 minutes being the estimated time for completion. The trails theme is native trees and their

uses throughout history. The trail begins and ends at the park’s amphitheater and provides a theme of change, illustrated by the succession of plants, man’s influence on the environment, and the variety Please see PARK | 78

of flowers, plants and trees in the Arkansas River Valley. The Bench Trail is considered the easier of two trails at Mount Nebo State Park. Beginning at the overlook shelter seen during the drive up the mountain, the trail gets its name from a narrow shelf called a bench that encircles the entire mountain. The four-mile trail through a woodland teeming with large trees and wildlife is level in most places and displays excellent mountain scenery, especially during the fall. The Summit Park Trail is a onemile trail on Mount Nebo and is considered moderate to strenuous in difficulty. The loop trail, named for the Summit Park Hotel built near the trailhead in 1889, begins at a point on the northwest side of the top of the mountain and meanders down to Fern Lake along a similar path that was first used

by the guests of the famous hotel. The Civilian Conservation Согрs improved the trail with beautiful гоck work in the 1930s. The Arkansas River Valley is brimming with various sites for those wanting to spend a warm spring or summer night outdoors, whether it be on the higher elevation of Mount Nebo or near the waters of Lake Dardanelle and its tributaries, the Arkansas River or Lake Nimrod. Mount Nebo is located west of Dardanelle and towers 1,350 feet above the Arkansas River Valley. A portion of the mountain was chosen as a park site in 1933, and logs and stones from the mountain were used by the Civilian Conservation Corps to construct many of the parks bridges, trails, rustic-style cabins and pavilions. There are 24 campsites (Class B, 10 hike-in) on Mount Nebo, along with 14 fullyequipped cabins with kitchens. Also included on the mountain are

Entertainment

Russellville presents: Sunset Cinema Each year, the Russellville Area Chamber of Commerce presents family-friendly movies at Lake Dardanelle State Park in front of the Visitor’s Center during Sunset Cinema. The outdoor movie theater operates during the summer months of June and July. Sponsored activities such as bounce houses and entertainment kick off the evenings with the movies beginning just after sundown. During the case of inclement weather, the show still goes on, but the location is moved to the Boys & Girls Club of the ARV located at 600 E. 16th Street. Any updates to the movie location is announced on the Chamber’s Facebook page, Twitter feed and local media outlets. The cost is $1 per person, children under 12 are free.

“We always look forward to hosting this great community event each summer,” said Stephanie Beerman, Chamber executive vice president. “Each movie offers a great opportunity to spend time with loved ones, and we couldn’t continue to host Sunset Cinema without the help and support of our sponsors.” The Russellville Area Chamber of Commerce stands as a voluntary organization of businesses and professional men and women who have joined together for the purpose of promoting the civic, economic, professional, cultural and industrial progress of the community. For directions or for future information about scheduled Sunset Cinema events call 479968-2530 or visit www.russellvillechamber.org

LDSP Visitors Center Always something to do at Lake Dardanelle Nature lovers coming to the Arkansas River Valley will delight in the variety of parks, reserves, campgrounds and lakes available to enjoy at little cost, and the Lake Dardanelle State Park Visitors Center is the proverbial cherry on top. In 1996, Arkansas passed Amendment 75, Arkansas’s Conservation Amendment. This 1/8-cent tax benefits the state parks along with other state conservation agencies, and led Arkansas to become one of the country’s leaders in state parks systems. Opened in 2003, the Visitors Center boasts 8,000 gallons of aquariums that represent the Arkansas River, local tributaries and Lake Dardanelle. The aquariums contain fish that live in the lake, river and tributaries and visitors can see them up close and watch their behavior. One of the biggest attractions to the youngsters who visit the park is the aquatic

turtle touch table, where kids can interact with live turtles. There are also several live animal exhibits in the kids corner that contain snakes, lizards, frogs and other creatures found in the park, that kids and adults alike can admire, as well as a honeybee exhibit. Interactive, touch-screen computer kiosks feature information on aquatic resources and the history and culture of the Arkansas River Valley. These interactive exhibits allow visitors to choose the subjects they want to discover more about. Park interpreters host environmental education programs throughout the year on the park’s resources using the center’s state-of-the-art classroom with digital projectors and surround sound. The programs are linked to the school curriculum frameworks so that teachers and students can enjoy learning in this

beautiful outdoor classroom. The classroom, which opens up to a balcony that overlooks Lake Dardanelle, has also become a hot spot for weddings, family reunions and corporate training. The facility sits on the shore of Lake Dardanelle, providing breathtaking views of the lake and something for every visitor to enjoy. The park also provides pavilions, launch ramps, a marina, kayak and paddleboard rentals and a hiking trail, and it has provided more and more people with a safe, economical vacation spot. The park has changed a great deal during the past few years. What began as mainly a camping destination has blossomed into a premier site for environmental education, conservation and community pride. Additional information can be obtained about the Visitors Center by calling Lake Dardanelle State Park at 479-967-5516.

WAGE

The WAGE (Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy) program is located at the Arkansas Workforce Center at 104 S. Rochester Ave. In order to stay competitive in the global economy, employers need workers who can read, write, compute, solve problems, possess computer skills and communicate well. The WAGE training program is designed for unemployed and underemployed persons. Students enrolled in WAGE can earn six certificates — customer service I and II, employability, office technology, bank teller and industrial. Through the WAGE program, students master businessand industry-accepted competencies within each basic skills area as required by each certificate. Employers may also use the WAGE program for its existing workers to gain educational skills required for high performance work standards and to prepare for technical training that may rely on basic math, reading and language skills. Instruction is customized to local business and industries. Students can also work on earning their GED diploma at the WAGE program. Training is now available for the Arkansas Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) — a portable credential that confirms to employers an individual possesses basic workplace skills in reading for information, applied math and location information — skills all jobs require. Red Devil Pride!

Woo pig sooie! The secrets of Tusk IV and the I40 call The heart of the Arkansas Razorbacks is hidden away on a farm near Dardanelle in Yell County. Although specifics aren’t available to the public, the University of the Arkansas’ live mascot, Tusk IV — a 350-pound male Russian boar — makes his home nearby. While his location remains undisclosed, his departure from the farm is well observed. Tusk travels through Russellville, briefly stopping at PDQ North and PDQ South for miniature pep-rallies, before continuing to Fayetteville to watch the Razorbacks from his spot on the sideline. Tusk IV, like his lineage, blares the University of Arkansas fight song from his truck and trailer as he caravans across the state for mascot responsibilities. “Our day starts at least eight hours before kickoff, sometimes even the night before,” Tusk IV’s handler Keith Stokes said. “We Page 88 n 2017 Welcome

usually head out about five hours before kickoff, stop at Russellville and do pep-rallies. You know, we play the fight song and stuff. A lot of times fans will correspond their trip with us up to the hill. It’s like a caravan to the game. It’s like traveling with a rock star.” The original Tusk lived at the Little Rock Zoo, but every boar since was sired from the previous pig, with the exception of Tusk IV who was sired from Tusk II. Tusk III was his uncle. “Tusk IV was born here and handled from day one,” Stokes said. “In a way that makes him more dangerous because when a wild animal gets used to you, he doesn’t think you are a person,

The Depot Historic Russellville Depot & Park In 1853, plans were made for the railroad in this area to run through Dover to the north of Russellville. However, upon construction in 1873 by the Little Rock-Fort Smith Railroad, the rail line ultimately ran through Russellville and was instrumental in Russellville becoming the seat of Pope County. The original depot was constructed in 1880 as a frame structure and noted in a newspaper article as “the largest on the Little Rock and Fort Smith road outside of Little Rock on September 23, 1880. Between 1873 and 1910, the railroad brought much business and population growth to Russellville, which helped make it the town it is today. In 1916, the Arkansas Railroad Commission ordered construction of a new depot on the site of the original frame structure

and the old passenger station was moved to make room for the new. The City Council closed River Street (Denver Avenue) to accommodate the new structure and the first brick was put in place on August 17, 1916. Construction of the current depot was completed in February 1917 and in May of that year it became part of the Missouri Pacific system. The Depot welcomed Teddy Roosevelt to Russellville during his whistle stop tour and served as a departure point for troops heading into service during two world wars. The last passenger train to leave the Russellville Depot was Southbound Train 125, which departed at 9:01 p.m. on March 28,

1960. Missouri Pacific Railroad (Mo Pac) merged with the Union Pacific (UP) Please see DEPOT | Page 94

City of Pottsville

This is the best little town in Arkansas Come for a visit and you might stay!

Originally occupied by Native American Choctaw and Cherokee tribes, Pottsville’s more current history began with Kirkbride Potts. In 1820 at just 17 years old, Potts traveled from New Jersey to Missouri and Arkansas. After settling in several areas along the way and making a trip to California’s goldrich hills, Potts built his home at the base of Crow Mtn in the 1850s. Potts’ home eventually became a resting stop for travelers and a stagecoach mail stop for the Butterfield Overland Mail. The town grew around Potts Inn and became known as Pottsville

in honor of Kirkbride Potts. The town was incorporated in 1897 and remained a small community until the development of dozens of homes in Pottsville, doubling Pottsville’s population to more than 2,800 between 2000 and 2010. Keeping up with the rapid growth in population and real estate in Pottsville, local officials are earnestly developing a ball park and city park. Existing parks in town include Rankin Park and Galla Park.

Railroad on January 8, 1980. Mo Pac was phased out effectively on December 22, 1982. Following transition from the Missouri Pacific system to the Union Pacific Railroad the depot continued to service daily freight and maintenance functions until 1997 when Union Pacific donated the depot to the City of Russellville. An extensive multi-year rehabilitation project soon followed under the guidance of Main Street Russellville’s Friends of the Depot Committee. Upon completion of the project the Russellville Depot was rededicated during a community celebration called Reunion ‘Round the Rails on May 29, 2004. Today, the Russellville Depot, adjacent Depot Park and surrounding Depot District, serves as our community’s town square. This public gathering place in the heart of our city is one of the prime venues for private parties, meetings, reunions, receptions and weddings, as well as large festivals and public events. The Depot also serves as the office of Main Street Russellville and is open Monday Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A visit to the Depot provides a glimpse into the history of this early mode of transportation. Self guided tours are available daily and larger groups are encouraged to call ahead to arrange for staff guided tours to avoid conflicts with previously scheduled events. This year the Russellville Depot will be celebrating its 100th year with another community celebration in recognition of this local landmark during Reunion ‘Round the Rails ‘17 on Saturday, May 27. The Russellville Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. to the north of Interstate 40 in Atkins, has become a fixture that travelers expect to see. “People just kind of look for it, and we try to oblige them by keeping it up,” Atkins resident J.L. Austin said. Most folks can’t remember just exactly when the sign was erected, but longtime residents generally agree the first sign was placed in the 1960s. “Someone just brought it up that we needed to put a sign on the mountain for the Razorbacks,” Austin said. Elmo Haney, another longtime resident of Atkins, said the sign made sense because so many people in the area are supporters of the Razorbacks and the University of Arkansas. Over time, the sign has become part of Atkins’ culture. The original sign was painted as an effort by many community members, Austin said, and the

Junior Chamber of Commerce club — or JCs, as they called themselves — raised the money for the supplies. One of the first things that happened after the original sign was a phone call placed by the director of the Arkansas State Police to the JCs, Austin said. Apparently, just prior to the sign’s inauguration, a similar sign was stolen from the southern part of the state. He said the director

was wondering if the residents had inadvertently purchased a stolen sign, but was quickly assured the residents had created the sign themselves in the school gymnasium. One thing’s for sure: The Atkins Razorback sign will be around for years to come, giving Razorbacks fans yet another reason to call the Hogs on the way to the game. Give it a try, won’t you?

Disc Golf Adventu Russellville is the home to TWO premier courses Some call it the fastest-growing sport that you’ve never heard of — but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone in the Russellville area who isn’t familiar with disc golf. Russellville is home to two premier disc golf courses, one at Old Post Park and the other at Pleasant View Park. Disc golf is played much like golf, except instead of clubs and golf balls, disc golfers use frisbee-like discs and chain baskets to work their way around a course. The Pleasant View course is built around inlets of Lake Dardanelle and is a mix of open and wooded holes. The course is 18 baskets across 5,801 feet of moderately hilly- and lightly-wooded grassland. The Old Post course is 18 baskets across 6,281 feet of varied terrain. The holes begin near the Arkansas River and move through the woods toward Caudle Overlook. Both courses are maintained by The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the River Valley Disc Golf Association (RVDGA). “We’re extremely lucky to have two disc golf facilities of this caliber in our town,” former association president Matt Loyd said. “These are championship-caliber courses and people travel from all over to use them. These are people that are spending money in our hotels, at our gas stations and on our food. It’s very good for

the community and good for those with an interest in disc golf.” RVDGA was founded in 2008. Loyd took over presidential duties in 2009, but Mark Lykins is the current board present. In 2015, RVDGA year sold 89 memberships at 15 dollars each, and the organization continues to grow. Fees go toward paying for the tournaments hosted in Russellville, of which there are currently five. The Vintage Open, NPC Championship, Arkansas Amateur Championship and the War of the Shore are all official Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) B-Tier tournaments. The group also hosts an annual 3-man scramble in March with proceeds from the tournament going to charity. The RVDGA encourages anyone interested in disc golf to grab some friends and give it a try. The allure? According to the group, the game is easy to learn, difficult to master and a good way to spend time with family and friends. Disc golfers use a range of different discs similar to the variety of clubs a golfer might use for various shots. Disc golfers aren’t limited by their throws, either. There is the usual frisbee throw, but disc-golfers also make shots over handed and sometimes even roll their discs downhill to set up future shots.
