SEE HOW HEALTHCARE IS GROWING IN ROSEVILLE

PRESIDENT MESSAGE

Dear Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce Members,

2023 has been an exciting year so far, with many successes already including a casinothemed Installation Dinner, the start of the Events & Home Services Roundtable, and most exciting of all, the successful launch of the Talent Pipeline Management Program (TPM) & our workforce development efforts through the Regional Business Education Collaborative (RBEC).

The Roseville TPM brought together 31 participants representing key partners and employers, including Kaiser and Sutter Health. Our aim is to create a collaborative and effective talent pipeline management system that benefits both businesses and job seekers. After a successful launch of Strategy 1 in March, I'm looking forward to continuing on with Strategies 2 through 6 over the coming months. These strategies are intended to provide participants with additional tools and strategies to build on the success of this initial program. Stay tuned for more updates on our progress!

RBEC, is a partnership between the El Dorado County, Rancho Cordova Area, Lake Tahoe and Roseville Area Chambers of Commerce. The purpose is to encourage our members to expand work-based learning experiences, such as internships, fieldtrips, or mock interviews, for local community college students through December 2024.

I can’t wait to see how these new programs grow over the rest of the year!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PLACER CEO

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

Appointed as Placer County CEO in November 2022, I was pleased to join Roseville Chamber members in early 2023 to share County priorities for the coming year, including forest health/wildfire management, workforce housing, and what I refer to as “getting growth right”.

“Getting growth right” is critical as we continue to be intentional about housing, jobs, and transportation, while still maintaining the quality of life we all cherish. This involves working closely with the community, a value shared by local elected officials, with a well-attended March 21 Roseville Townhall on West Placer development/infrastructure needs, hosted by Supervisor Gore, Supervisor Landon, and Mayor Houdesheldt. With thousands of new homes slated for West Placer, ever-expanding higher education offerings with Sierra College, CSU Sacramento, William Jessup, and Hillsdale College, careful planning and collaboration are imperative.

Balancing commercial and residential growth is essential for successful communities. Contrary to reports, California continues to be among the top 4 states for recruiting large capital projects (per Site Selection Magazine). While news headlines imply a business exodus, data suggests CA continues to be a destination of choice for investment.

West Placer continues to lead the way in Placer County for employment, fueled by small businesses. The recent Beacon Economics report states from 2017-2021, employment growth in West Placer was highest in establishments with less than 15 employees, experiencing a 21.8% growth rate.

Resources such as the Placer Business Resource Center, Roseville’s Venture Lab, and Rocklin’s Growth Factory, offer existing and new businesses ongoing consulting and support - assets to help further the growth of our business community. Sierra College and William Jessup University are expanding efforts to foster new business growth. Placer County will soon embark on reimagining the Business Resource Center, customizing offerings to complement entrepreneurial efforts in our region.

As Placer residents and businesses, we all share in the responsibility of maintaining, building upon, and promoting our unparalleled quality of life. At the region’s Placer Valley 2022 business summit last fall, economist Dr. Christopher Thornberg of Beacon Economics remarked positively on Placer County’s “unmet potential.” Placer County will continue to meet that full potential due to the efforts of our chambers, cities, business organizations, nonprofits, educational institutions, and all of you, supporting and promoting our regional business community. We know that together with our partners, Placer County can “get growth right”, all while enjoying our outstanding quality of life and realizing Placer’s future “unmet potential”!

PUBLIC POLICY

ECONOMIC & GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

ith the California Legislative session in full swing, the Chamber is hard at work advocating for business-friendly policies. In addition to taking a position on bills, which can be found on the Chamber Positions page on our website, we have written letters and joined coalitions with the US Chamber and California Chamber of Commerce.

Recently, we drafted a letter to Senator Roger Niello voicing our support of SB 316, which will ask voters to reinstate a requirement to allow individuals convicted three or more times of petty or grand theft and who is then convicted of petty theft to be subject to imprisonment for up to three years. Bills like this one are paramount to ensuring public safety and dismantling the harm of Prop 47. Additionally, with the US Chamber, we joined a coalition to encourage Congress to act on permitting reform. This issue touches all businesses, large and small, and can make a meaningful difference in the success of a business.

The government rewards businesses in the form of tax credits for certain behaviors (hiring employees, R&D, developing energy-efficient buildings, etc.), however, these incentives are consistently overlooked and as a result: billions of dollars go unclaimed each year! That’s where the expertise of a tax credit specialist, like Saba Tax Advisory, comes into play.

Rocklin natives and brothers, Justin and Sebastian Saba, founded Saba Tax Advisory in January of 2022 and their mission is simple: to help business owners identify and secure tax credits that they’re eligible to claim.

One example is the Employee Retention Credit (ERC). ERC is a program that rewards business owners who were impacted by the pandemic in the form of a refund check worth up to $26,000 per employee - Saba Tax Advisory offers free consultations so if you’d like to learn if your business qualifies for ERC or any other tax incentive, get in touch today!

WHO WILL YOUR CELEBRITY WAITER BE?

Lighthouse Counseling and Family Resource Center’s 15th annual Celebrity Waiter Luncheon (CWL) takes place Friday, May 19, 2023 from 11:00am-1:00pm at Sun City Lincoln Hills’ Orchard Creek Lodge. As our only fundraiser of the year, the proceeds from CWL allow us to bridge critical gaps in our budget to help meet the needs of our clients.

With offices in Lincoln, Roseville, Auburn, and Rocklin, Lighthouse provides low to no-cost mental health counseling services, emotional wellness classes, and basic needs resource assistance to over 4,500 people each year throughout Placer Countyover half of whom are children. Lighthouse’s services aren’t just important, they’re literally saving lives!

The Luncheon starts off with a ½ hour hosted VIP Reception, after which our ‘Celebrity Waiters’ attend to the needs of their table’s lunch guests, all while competing to see who will win the title of ‘Celebrity Waiter of the Year’. It’s a fun-filled, action packed, 2-hour luncheon that many have called Placer County’s ‘Can’t Miss Event’.

We hope to see you there!

LEADERSHIP ROSEVILLE RAISES OVER $8,000 FOR ALL ABOUT HOPE

It was a great night of community, fundraising, and food as Leadership Roseville invited the public to support All About Hope at The Monk’s Cellar on Wednesday, February 8! The 2023 class of Leadership Roseville, a program through Roseville Chamber of Commerce that is designed to educate and develop community leaders, has partnered with local nonprofit All About Hope this year to support hospitalized children with a box of art supplies and crafts during the toughest times of their lives.

All About Hope delivers beautifully designed customized boxes full of activity books, Crayola crayons, paints and markers, craft project supplies and instructions, and custom notebooks to children dealing with terminal illness, RSV, Covid-19, broken bones, and more.

To date, Leadership Roseville has raised $8,122 for All About Hope, or about 325 boxes of hope, surpassing their original goal of fulfilling 300 boxes. After seeing the community response, the class has raised their goal to deliver $10,000 to All About Hope by the end of May 2023. If you missed the Monk’s Cellar event, Leadership Roseville invites you to join us for our next event on May 1 at Roller King for a fun night of skating and service.

After her own daughter's extended hospitalization at Sutter Children’s Hospital, All About Hope founder Cindy Costa wanted to help the other families she saw experiencing heartache, disappointment, and stress. Together with a growing group of volunteers, Cindy spent the next decade serving children and families in the NICU and pediatric departments, providing home cooked meals and comfort items. In 2016, Cindy spurred a new vision as she saw firsthand how art brought hope, healing, and restoration to children facing serious illness. Soon after, All About Hope was born.

“This is the first year the Leadership Roseville class was able to choose the project we worked on and as soon as we heard Cindy’s story our whole class was onboard to support these children throughout our community. We’re looking forward to our next event at Roller King so those in attendance can see firsthand what fills these boxes of hope, meet Cindy, and hear more about the organization we’ve chosen to support,” says Lauren Razzano, member of Leadership Roseville class of 2023.

The Roller King event is a one night fundraiser and ‘packing party’ to raise funds and pack the Hope Boxes that will be delivered to Kaiser Roseville Hospital and Sutter Roseville Medical Center. If you are unable to join that night, please consider making a donation online or learning more about this project at www.LeadershipRoseville2023.org.

Tuesday, May 1, 2023 • 6-8 pm In-Person at Roller King (889 Riverside Ave, Roseville, CA 95678)

FEATURED AMBASSADOR

H

What I like most about being an Ambassador is the opportunity to help new members. I enjoy volunteering to be a new member greeter at the breakfasts and lunches. First, I will ask the new member to share with me what their business is. Then, I try to introduce them to members they may have synergy with. Then I invite them to join me at my table. This gives me an opportunity to introduce them to friends that we’re eating with. Before you know it, they will have met 10-12 potential friends or business partners.

My favorite Chamber event is the breakfast. I enjoy hearing everyone’s 30 second ‘commercial’ about their business. The ‘hot sheet’ that’s provided lists everyone in attendance with contact information. This makes it easy to connect with anyone that attended the breakfast. By attending the breakfast, I feel like I’ve started the morning off “on the right foot”.

-Dave Morrow, Mission Courier Inc.

Our Leadership Council and planning group are working diligently to secure vendors and sponsors, and we want you to be a part of it! We are looking for restaurants, breweries, wineries, and special exhibits to show off to our guests. If you have a unique offering and are a member of the chamber, WE WANT YOU! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or the events team at the Chamber if you want to be a part of our biggest event of the year! See you on May 5 at the bridge!

KAISER PERMANENTE EXPANDING!

On September 16, 1992, Kaiser Permanente broke ground on the Roseville Medical Center. Six years later, the 116-bed hospital opened to the community, completing our first phase of construction for our campus.

At the time, much of the land around the hospital campus was fields of grass. Since then, the City of Roseville has grown significantly and become widely known as one of the best places in the country to raise a family, retire, work, and play.

Just like the city, Kaiser Permanente has grown since opening the doors of the hospital in 1998. The then 116-bed hospital has already expanded multiple times and now boasts 352 licensed beds and includes a stand-alone Women and Children’s Center housing a 60-bed neonatal intensive care unit. Nearly 365,000 people living in Roseville and neighboring communities get their care at Kaiser Permanente in Roseville.

“The tremendous growth of both the city and our membership in this area means our Roseville Medical Center needs to expand again to meet the needs of the community,” said Kim Menzel, senior vice president and area manager for Kaiser Permanente, Roseville, and current president of the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce. “That is why we are so excited to be moving forward on major expansion plans that will help increase access to high-quality care and state-of-the-art medical equipment.”

Expansion plans for hospital at 1600 Eureka Road include a six-story, 138-bed tower with 20 additional, much-needed intensive care unit beds that we will increase to 30 in the future. Kaiser Permanente will also be adding 36 beds in our Emergency Department and up to 6 main operating rooms along with a new discharge pharmacy and expanded imaging and diagnostics services. To help accommodate all patients and visitors, Kaiser Permanente is building a second parking garage on the campus.

“We are honored to serve our Roseville community, but the fact is we need more room,” said Rich Florio, MD, physician-in-chief for Kaiser Permanente, Roseville. “In 2021, our emergency room saw the second most ER patients in the entire state of California, behind the Los Angeles County Medical Center. And more than 1 out of every 100 babies born in the state is born right here in our own Women and Children’s Center.”

These additions will ensure that Kaiser Permanente continues to provide the same high level of quality care and service that contributes to the high-quality of life the residents of Roseville have come to expect.

SUTTER ROSEVILLE MEDICAL CENTER - GROWING IN CARE

Sutter Health is making great progress on its construction projects to support both expanded clinical care and the growth of Sutter Roseville Medical Center’s new graduate medical education program. Remodeling inside the hospital will expand medical staff space and add new physician sleep and locker rooms. In addition to the in-house renovations, the campus is also undergoing a significant parking structure expansion that will add an additional 552 stalls for both patient and staff use.

“We thoughtfully considered how we can best serve our patients in the region now and into the future and are making sure our infrastructure needs are matching our clinical growth plans,” said Dr. Peter Hull, chief medical executive and interim CEO of Sutter Roseville Medical Center. “We are in the thick of several improvement projects that will provide important resources and learning spaces for residents, as well as additional parking and clinic space for both patients and staff.”

Elsewhere on the campus, construction to add a new medical office building is also underway. Much of the building’s four-story space is designed to support the residency program and will include administrative offices, classrooms, conference space for didactics and lectures, a simulation center and an internal medicine continuity clinic, along with outpatient clinic space for Sutter Medical Foundation physicians and staff. The new health center is expected to break ground later this year and open its doors in 2024.

Since the announcement of Sutter Roseville Medical Center’s residency program, the hospital has launched its first three tracks – internal medicine, emergency medicine and surgery – with more residency tracks and fellowships to come within the next five years. When the program is fully built out, it could include more than 200 residents and fellows developing cutting-edge expertise and strengthening the physician pipeline in a growing area. Expanding medical education at Sutter is a testimony to the organization’s dedication to its communities and an investment in patient access to excellent, compassionate care for many years to come.

THE VALUE OF HUMAN CONNECTION IN HEALTHCARE

As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and navigate our return to normal, I have been reflecting on the valuable information gained over the last three years. Of the many learning opportunities presented during the pandemic, most prominent was the call of healthcare providers to increase our emphasis on providing human-centered care. We know that the interaction between provider and patient has a significant impact on health outcomes, and we should be asking how we can incorporate more human connection into our daily practices.

Dignity Health maintains clinics in the Roseville area and serves many Placer County patients in our Carmichael hospital. At Dignity Health and Mercy San Juan Medical Center, we know human-first care can have a long-term impact on the overall health of our community. We believe human connection is the catalyst for healing—body, mind and spirit.

Creating an effective meaningful connection with patients can be as simple as maintaining eye contact, asking more questions, interrupting less and remaining curious during interactions. Our hello humankindess slogan is more than just a catchy tagline. Recently, at Mercy San Juan demonstrated our commitment to human connection in our Emergency Department when one of our physicians recognized a patient who was in need of shoes upon his discharge from our care. This provider removed his shoes and gave them to the patient to ensure he could have what he needed as he left our care. This level of caring and compassion is at the core of our mission.

The word “dignity” defines what we stand for and why we do the work we do. Dignity means utilizing the most advanced medical technology; Mercy San Juan is home to a Level II Trauma Unit and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It means offering clinical expertise from top doctors and nurses; Healthgrades has named Mercy San Juan as the number two Pulmonary Care Hospital in California as well as top 100 in the Nation. Dignity means safely caring for our patients so they can lead healthy, meaningful lives. And it means delivering high quality, compassionate care that is accessible to all.

The adversities of the pandemic required us to put our mission into action to improve the health of the community we serve. Within the last two years alone, Mercy San Juan cared for the most Emergency Medical Services (EMS) patients in Sacramento County for trauma, STEMI (heart attack) and stroke.

As we move forward, let us reflect on and incorporate what we have learned from this journey. Healing is about caring for the whole person, and human connection is the way forward.
