WorkedasaProjectAssociatewithTGGFoundation,Onneyar (NearSultanBathery),Wayanad,Kerala,fromAugust2022in connectionwithEnergyEfficientTinyHomes.Theprojectisa dwellingwhichgeneratesitsownenergyrequirementsfrom solar,windandwater.Thehomeis450squarefeetwithground andfirstfloorlevelsconsisting–

1.Livingroomwithaspacefordining

2.Kitchen

3.Powderroom

4.Bedroomwithattachedtoilet

TheelevationrepresentsEnglishalphabet“A”.Thisshapeis chosenastheinclinedportionservesbothwallandroof.

Thechallengeistobringinnaturallightandventilationwithout providinganywindowsontheslopedportionof“A”wallsoas avoidrainwaterseepingintothehouse. Thestructurewillhavean8ft.highwallandispartofground floorandtheinclinedroofwillbeconstructedthereafter. Windowswillbeprovidedonthe8’walltoprovidenatural lightingandventilation.“Skylighttiles”ontheslopedwall providenaturallightingatfirstfloor.

CONCEPT–GOINGBACKTOTHEROOTS

ThehousereflectsTGGFoundation’svaluesofopenness toparticipatetowardssustainableruraldevelopment goals.Windowsingroundflooronthreesidesfor circulationofair&transparentmaterials(Glass/ polycarbonate)fixedonwallsprovidenaturallightinthe houseandskylighttilesonthefirstfloorreflectthe enthusiasmofpeople’sparticipationtowardssustainable developmentgoals.

Thehousehasanopenfloorplanconnectingtheliving, diningandkitchentogetherwithlivingbeingdouble heightandbedroomoverlookingthelivingarea.

TheTGGFoundationrequiredalightweight,easily transportablestructureforWayanad,whichisnot susceptibletotermiteattacks.Whilebamboowas initiallyconsideredduetoitsstrengthandweight,its vulnerabilitytotermitesandfungiledtoits abandonment.Chemicaltreatmentswereprohibited, soalternativemethodslikesmokinganddryingproved ineffective.Thefinaldesignwillusemetalboxsections fortheraftersandpurlins,supportingsolarrooftiles withRCCColumnsandslabforadditionalsupport

CollaboratedwithAr.DeepakGuptaandAr.RashmiGuptaatD+RDesignStudiofromFebruary6,2023,tothepresent.The attacheddrawingswerecreatedundertheirguidance.Ar.DeepakGupta'sinsightsintowebsitecontentwereinstrumentalinmy work.

TheMassageHouseinBangalore isaharmoniousblendoftradition andmodernity.Designedfora clientlongingforarusticretreat, this550sq.ft.spaceisa testamenttoearthyarchitecture.

Sustainabilityisattheheartoftheproject.Passivecooling, naturallight,andminimalenvironmentalimpactwere prioritized. Theresultisatranquiloasiswheretheinterplayofnatural materials,light,andspacecreatesasereneatmosphere, perfectforrelaxationandrejuvenation.

TheMassageHouseisalivingexampleofhowtraditional wisdomandcontemporaryengineeringcancoexistto createatrulyinspiringspace.

Inspiredbyvernacular villagehuts,thehouse featuresacentral courtyardsurroundedby massage,steam,and bathareas.Itscore structureisavaultmade ofterracottabricks, supportedbyinnovative RCCtie-beams.This uniquedesignoffers excellentinsulation, naturalventilation,and astrikingaesthetic. ThePankajRamanihomeisabeautifulmixofoldandnew styles.It'sabighouseinBangalorethatfeelsbothmodern andtraditional. Theowners,theRamanifamily,wantedtheirhometoshow theirIndianroots,andthedesignersdidagreatjob.

Inside,thehouseiscalmandrelaxingwithsoftcolorslike beigeandbrown.Butit'salsofunwithbrighttoucheslike colorfulrugsandagreenwall.Thedesignersusedold Indiancolors,butinanewway.

Thehouseisnotjustpretty,it'salsopractical.Thereare built-inshelvesandlotsofnaturallight.Thedesignersalso thoughtabouttheenvironmentandmadesurethehouseis coolinthehotweatherwithoutusingtoomuchelectricity.

Ifyoulikehomesthatfeelspecialandhaveamixofold andnewstyles,thenthePankajRamanihomeisagreat example.Letushelpyoucreateyourownbeautifulhome.

WorkedunderSamanthaKumarfor15weekworkformhomecourseonArchitecturaljournalismasIwasdrawntowards writinginarchitecturerecentlyinJanuary2024andwantedtoexplorethefield.

Sustainabilitystartswithresponsiblewaste management.Weoftenthrowawaythingsthatcouldbe reusedorrecycled.Thisharmstheenvironment.But wastecanbeanopportunity.

Architectscanturnwasteintovaluablematerials.For example,constructionwastecanbeusedtomake buildingmaterials.Othermaterialslikeglass,metal,and plasticcanbeusedincreativeways.

TheVeganHouseandCollageHouseserveasprime examplesofsustainabledesign,showcasinghow repurposedmaterialscanbecreativelyincorporated intomodernarchitecture.Thisapproachnotonly benefitstheenvironmentbutalsoaddsauniqueand visuallyappealingdimensiontobuildings..

Byreducing,reusing,andrecycling,architectscanhelp buildacleanerfuture.Thisapproachsavesresources andinspiresnewandexcitingwaystodesignbuildings.

ArchitectSanjayMoheskillfullyenlargedthetemplewithout compromisingitsspiritualessence.Byincorporatingbiomimicry principles,hedesignedasacredspacebathedinnaturallight, evokingthesereneambianceofaforest.Thetemple'stower, inspiredbythegracefulformofaseashell,symbolizesspiritual developmentandconnectstothelifeandphilosophyofSai Baba.Whileemployingmodernmaterialslikeconcreteand stone,thetempleshowcasestraditionalarchitecturalelements, demonstratingaharmoniousfusionofoldandnewdesign approaches

Theprojectaimsatcreatingawarenessbyestablishinganexperientialcenterabout understandingtheConstructionandDemolition(C&D)waste,itsutilizationinconstructionor otherareasthroughsegregation,reuse,recycling.

ProcessingtheC&Dwastefordevelopment,therebyminimizingtheneedofextractingfresh naturalresources.

Thejourneythroughtheexperientialcenterwillignitethevisitor’smindontheadverseeffects ofC&Dwasteontheenvironmentlikesound,airandwaterpollution,lossofgreenery,land requiredforlandfills,effectsonthehealthofhumansandanimals.

ThecenterdisplaysapplicationofC&Dmaterials,productsdeveloped,demonstrationabout theuseofproductsfromC&Dwaste.
