Music has a unique ability to allow us to feel part of a community; it can give us a sense of belonging, to help us feel at home. We want everyone who attends RSNO performances to feel part of our community. Everybody is welcome, whether you hear us in the Usher Hall or meet us in intimate spaces in towns and villages around the country. This Season we explore how music Feels Like Home
Some of the music you’ll hear this Season embodies a composer’s homeland. Whilst Vaughan Williams painted an atmospheric portrait of London in his Second Symphony, Mahler, who grew up in a tavern in Bohemia, filled his First Symphony with folk songs, country dances and the sounds of nature from his childhood.
I’m delighted to welcome singers and musicians from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to join us for a very special performance of Ravel’s exquisite L’enfant et les sortilèges. Through this work we explore the feeling of home in the domestic sense. Set within a French house and garden, a young child goes on a wild rampage around his home, wrecking the furniture and tormenting the garden animals. He eventually returns to his mother having learned both wisdom and empathy.
We’ll play music where composers evoke their homelands from which they are far
away, whether through emigration or exile. Andrzej Panufnik’s Sinfonia Sacra was written in his adopted home of the UK after he had escaped from communist Poland. Much of Rachmaninov’s music has a sense of melancholy and yearning for home as he spent many years in exile from his native Russia after the Revolution. We’ll perform Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony, which one critic commented should have been called ‘Memories of Russia’.
And of course, as Scotland’s National Orchestra, we can’t forget our home! Scottish mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill performs Sir James MacMillan’s Three Scottish Songs and we enjoy an international composer’s view of Scotland with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture. The Scottish poet Robert Louis Stevenson’s Songs of Travel, set by Vaughan Williams, also uniquely captures what it means to travel away from home, explore the world, and then return to your roots.
No matter where you’re from, we welcome you to enjoy a Season filled with wonderful music. We’d love to hear what music makes you feel at home. Please email us at info@rsno.org.uk or use the hashtag #FeelsLikeHome on social media.

Rachmaninov All-Night Vigil (Vespers)
Stephen Doughty Director, RSNO Chorus
RSNO Chorus
Tue 28 Apr 2026: 11.30am ST MARY’S CHURCH, HADDINGTON
Cecilia McDowall Off the Ground
G Holst St Paul’s Suite
I Holst Suite for String Orchestra
Alice Farnham Conductor
Gillian Moore Presenter
Luminous, serene and rooted in a profound and quiet faith, Rachmaninov’s Vespers were the composition that he loved the most. They gave their composer ‘an hour of the most complete satisfaction,’ and every performance creates a quite unmistakable atmosphere. For RSNO Chorus Director Stephen Doughty it’s a labour of love; this is music that glows in the dark, and in the beautiful surroundings of a historic church, it will speak straight to the heart and soul.
Sometimes genius runs in the family. Gustav Holst’s St Paul’s Suite blew like fresh air into the polite world of British music; a cheerful collision of folkdance and pure imagination. Gustav’s daughter Imogen was a composer too, and thanks to conductor Alice Farnham she’s finally getting her place in the sun. Gillian Moore introduces two evergreen classics of British music plus a bracing, dance-inspired new work from Cecilia McDowall, just to set things spinning.
