We were delighted to have welcomed so many industry friends and colleagues to Rolling Stock Networking 2025.
We are also pleased to report that RSN 2025 broke all previous records with more content, more visitors, more exhibitors and more smiles.
The show attracted the great and good with new builders, the heavy maintainers, systems integrators and depot equipment suppliers all taking part in a great day of exhibiting and networking.
It was heartwarming for the team to recieve so many kind words from exhibitors and visitors alike on the show day. We feel very entusiastic as we begin the preparations for RSN 2026 which will be on the 2nd of July at the same great venue.
For RSN 2026 we have a new floor plan and have increased the number of spaces for exhibitors to 181. At the date of publishing the take up has been incredible as within weeks of the show we are around 80% sold.
We firmly believe that unlike any other show, RSN offers a community feel for the rail industry, where visitors and exhibitors are enthused by the buzz the event provides and the relaxed but efficient networking experience. RSN is the place where contacts are made and relationships are formed.
Whilst the show is organised by a small team, we recognise the contribution that our substantial show partners bring to the event.
We particularly thank Rail Industry Connect, Rail Business Daily, Railway-News, Railway Industry Association, BusinessDaily, Jobson James Rail, Delta XD, Derby Arena, Derby Live, Rail Forum and the many friends that have helped us to shape an event that delivered something for everyone.
We are also thank Positive Traction for their superb outside display at RSN 2025, an 08e Shunter Locomotive fully converted to battery power.
RSN remains a show that is organised by railway people for railway people. The event is not owned by a media company and everyone in our team works day to day in the rail industry.
We would like to think that our everyday engagement in the industry helped us to provide wonderful event for you, that whilst affordable and accessible, also delivers high quality opportunities and information to help you to increase your market share in rail.
Most importantly we thank our exhibitors and visitors and hope that you all had a very successful show.
The hard work now continues to prepare RSN 2026 for you, which will see a major expansion in the number of exhibitors that we are able to host.

However one judges it, Rolling Stock Networking 2025 was a great success. There were more exhibitors than ever before, it attracted more visitors than any previous show, two co-located events were equally well received and the ‘Meet the Buyer’ sessions were oversubscribed.
RSN2025 was the sixth event in the series. From its early days with with little over 130 exhibitors, it has now grown to occupy all of the available floorspace at the Derby Arena, plus the mezzanine plus an additional conference area.
But it seems the RSN team has pulled a rabbit out of the hat for 2026. The new floor plan going forward, can accomodate 181 exhibitors, and is configured to suit all exhibitors with many large stands plus enterprise stands for smaller companies, all in a completely new floor layout.
Visitors to RSN 2025 were left in no doubt they were in the right place when the first thing they saw was a huge (relatively) shunting locomotive parked outside the door. It was an 08e shunter from Positive Traction, daringly left parked on double-yellow lines atop a massive low-loader from Reid Freight Services.
An electric-traction conversion of a British Railways Class 08 diesel shunter, built in Derby, the new 08e is not only much greener but, with a reprofiled ‘bonnet’, it allows the crew much better visibility. The 08e is finding acceptance in quarries and storage yards around the UK.
Once inside, visitors were spoiled for choice. Exhibitors had all types of products and services on display, all aimed at the rolling-stock sector. There were nuts and bolts and sophisticated electronics, vinyl stickers and high-tech door systems, windscreen wiper blades and digital signalling. Whatever visitors wanted to see, it was there.
Platinum sponsor Westermo was promoting a wide range of robust and secure industrial networking solutions specifically designed to make rail connectivity a tangible reality.
“The RSN team has pulled a rabbit out of the hat for 2026 as the new floor plan going forward can accomodate 181 exhibitors”
Many enjoyed the friendly networking that the show offered, whilst over 1,100 show guides distributed on the day provided key show information.
These solutions included: Wireless Communications Technology, Ethernet and Power over Ethernet Switches and Cybersecurity, all to the highest standards and certified to EN 50155.
Gold sponsor Railnova supported the event as it offered an excellent opportunity to engage with the UK rail community, share insights, and showcase how the company’s solutions enable smarter fleet maintenance and operations. Sales Director Francis Vander Ghinst delivered an impactful presentation on how IoT (Internet of Things) and real-time rolling-stock data can help operators improve performance and boost operational efficiency.
Train manufacturer Stadler had a stand – not to try and sell trains (though I am sure they would if you asked), but to attract UK suppliers so they can increase the UK content of trains destined for the British market and even for overseas ones.
British suppliers will have to be competitive on price, and one thing that seems to let them down is they have a tendency to ‘gold plate’ their offerings, offering products that are better than the specification but at a higher price. They have to learn to quote exactly what is asked for, and that will make them more competitively priced.
RSN enables you network with key companies like, Alstom, HS2, CAF, Stadler, Siemens Mobility, Hitachi and mingle with Teir 1’s, Train Operators and Train Owners
Derby-based DB ESG had a small 3D printer on its stand, seemingly following a red plastic template. In fact, it was actually a production machine and, although table-top in size, it was producing saleable switch housings.
Heidi Lee explained that 3D printing has changed the market completely for the train-refurbishment industry. Now, obsolete and out-of-stock items such as grab-handles, door locks and other interior fittings can be produced in tiny quantities, and in whatever colour you desire! Mechanical components are no problem either, with the printers capable of printing metal as well as plastic.
Railfleet helps streamline fleet management processes, including maintenance planning, work order dispatch and communication among stakeholders, while Railster devices enable the collection and transmission of real-time data from trains, which can be used for various purposes, including maintenance optimization and performance analysis.
At RSN 2025, Rayfast Ltd announced an agreement with Provertha Connectors GmbH to stock their range of M12 connectors and Quick Lock D-sub hoods to support customers in the rail market providing easy access to stock.
Aura Brand Solutions is another company working for train refurbishers as well as those building new. Full train liveries can be designed and produced, including the temporary wraps that a number of operators use to show support for Pride, local and national charities and other special events.
Gold sponsor Railnova specialises in fleet and maintenance solutions for the railway industry. Its Railgenius platform allows for real-time monitoring of rolling stock data, enabling predictive maintenance and fault diagnostics.

Grinsty Rail took the opportunity while exhibiting at RSN2025 to announce its new partnership with MÖVE Fahrzeugsitze GmbH, a leading name in rail vehicle driver seats. This collaboration will ensure premium service, maintenance and support for MÖVE’s innovative seating solutions across the UK, reflecting the two companys’ shared commitment to quality, reliability and customer satisfaction.
Managing director Matt Perry-Parker said of the agreement: “We are proud to partner with MÖVE Fahrzeugsitze GmbH, a company renowned for its high standards in the railway industry. Our tailored service solutions will support the long-term performance of their exceptional products.” Local Derby South MP Baggy Shanker dropped by the stand to learn more about the new co-operation agreement.
Innovation and proven technology
Unipart featured Fuel Active on its stand. A simple and inexpensive (but clever) way of ensuring diesel fuel is free of contaminants when it is pumped into the engine, Fuel Active leaves particulates and water contamination in the tank and doesn’t draw it into the fuel pump. A very useful addition to fuel systems on diesel-powered trains, it can also be used on earth-moving machinery and other heavy plant.
Various items for train interiors also featured on the Unipart stand. With train refurbishment becoming increasingly important, the new offering is proving attractive to a variety of operators and maintenance facilities. Unipart has also recently formed a strategic partnership with Trainvac Group to deliver cuttingedge train toilet spares with quick lead times, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of rail sanitary systems across the UK.
“ True Heroes supports ex servicemen and women with a range of disabilities ”
Baggy Shanker MP (Derby South) Meets with the Akriveia and True
One of the more impressive stands, which attracted many visitors, was that of Akriveia, which specialises in 3D scanning, reverse engineering and mechanical engineering and has supported a wide range of rolling stock modification, gauging and upgrade projects.
Director Mike Baker explained: “The first thing that Akriveia asks the customer is ‘what are you trying to achieve?’, as this will dictate how the project is undertaken. With 3D scanning and reverse engineering, a successful outcome is often dependent upon the accuracy of the 3D scan, and how it is structured. Akriveia has developed a number of tools and processes which ensure that the needs of the customer are met or exceeded.”
Although this is fascinating technology, what drew the crowds was the large racing motorcycle that was at the front of the stand. A competitor in two of the British Superbike Championship support series, fielding two bikes in each, True Heroes supports ex-servicemen and women with a range of disabilities stemming from their service – and that includes the riders!
Team principal Phil Spencer was on hand to explain that True Heroes Racing is a non-profit organisation, requiring a great deal of dedication and hard work to operate. He is proud to have a diverse team of individuals from different backgrounds driving them towards their goals.
With so many exhibitors, it is impossible to mention them all. However, a few stood out. These included Mattei Compressors, which had a new model on show. The RVT-65, launched internationally at InnoTrans last year, can power pneumatic systems, including braking, suspension and pantographs, on new and refurbished trains. The example on display was powered by a permanent-magnet electric motor, making it lighter and more compact than other models. It is also quieter and requires minimal maintenance.
There were, of course, many other companies showing their wares to the crowd of visitors. Camira Fabrics displayed various designs and materials that are made up into train seats, from London Underground to mainline rail.
PSV Wipers and Hepworth Group were both showing their wide ranges of wiper blades, arms and mechanisms that are used on many trains around the UK and elsewhere in the world. EAO showed off its range of push buttons and switches for door controls and other applications, while regular exhibitors Harting (connectors) and Jewers Doors (sliding-folding doors for train depots) were busy talking with current and prospective customers. Sella Controls showcased its latest smart solutions for the digital railway including TrackLink3, its flagship Track-to-Train communications system. Roxtec showed its range of adjustable cable glands and Belvoir Rail had two robot dogs marching around the exhibition and attracting a lot of attention. The quadruped robots with advanced sensors and AI are more usually used to provide safer, faster, and more precise rail inspections.
Exhibitors were given the opportunity to ‘Meet the Buyer’ in a series of meetings arranged by Jobson James Rail – The Rail Broker. Procurement experts from Alstom, Hitachi, West Midlands Trains, Loram, Wabtec, Yellow Rail, Buckland WH Davis and KeolisAmey were on hand to meet with exhibitors, as was an international trade adviser from the Department for Business and Trade
So popular were the sessions that they were booked up weeks in advance, and some exhibitors met with two or three buyers!
Natalia Pickett, head of procurement at Keolis Amey, said afterwards: “I had the pleasure of taking part in the RSN Meet the Buyer event in Derby — something I look forward to every year!
“These sessions are like professional ‘speed dating’, where suppliers and buyers meet, talk for 15 minutes or so, exchange details, and, if there’s mutual interest, continue the conversation afterwards. It’s a fantastic way to discover new suppliers and explore innovative ideas.”
Alongside RSN2025, and on the mezzanine floor above the main exhibition, the Railway Industry Association organised a conference that considered the future outlook for UK rolling stock in the short, medium and long term. It was sponsored by Railnova and examined current options and proposals for the procurement of new-build trains as well as fleet cascade and refurbishment options, while focusing on how to adapt rail infrastructure and integrate alternative traction to achieve net zero targets.
Keynote speaker was Paul Baines, director of major programmes at Siemens Mobility. He spoke about the time frames that impact the government’s ability to implement its GBR (Great British Railways) policies through the procurement of rolling stock.
LORAM joined the panel of industry buyers in the Jobson James Rail MTB event.
He looked at four key elements. One was the cycle of government, which he assumed to be five years. Another was the GBR timeframe, which, if it happens at the end of 2026, is actually two and a half years into that government cycle.
Paul’s third key element was the rolling-stock innovation cycle, “around 12 years before obsolescence and other factors mean you need to be reinvesting in your platforms”, and the fourth was the tender timeframe – “if you decide today you want to buy a train, then it’s going to be six or seven years before a train arrives on the railway,” he explained.
“There are three tenders in the market at the moment (Northern, Southeastern and TransPennine), launched by the previous government,” he continued. “It’s in the public domain that they want three different trains, so that’s not really in line with the standardisation approach that GBR wants.
“If GBR is formed in 2026, we won’t receive any of those trains in this parliamentary term, they will arrive during the next parliamentary term. So, if GBR doesn’t review those tenders with its own policy, and despite the Secretary of State saying we are making all these changes, we won’t see any more rolling stock (apart from those three tenders) in the next parliamentary term and we probably won’t see it until the one after that.”
“Content of this quality normally comes with a heafty price tag ”
Several other speakers took to the stage during the rest of the day, discussing empowering rail operators with extra data to improve performance (Francis Vander Ghinst –Railnova), applying machine learning models to railway condition data (Jordan Langfield – Angel Trains, with Steven Armstrong – Grand Central and Anisa Mamaniyat – Chrome Angel Solutions), decarbonising rail freight (Paul Long – Freightliner Group), new lineside remotecondition monitoring systems (Greg Howell – Rail Innovations, with Mark Bridel – Network Rail), and testtrack strategies for the future (Gareth Dennis – Network Rail).
Delta XD, a Zeiss-certified metrology partner, is a leading provider of precision metrology, inspection and testing solutions. With over 25 years of experience, it specialises in highaccuracy 3D scanning and reverse engineering, utilising AS9100-certified procedures to enhance quality control and efficiency.
At RSN 2025, Delta XD staged its first Digitisation Forum for the rail industry, connecting with both new and familiar faces to show how 3D scanning, photogrammetry, reverse engineering and 3D testing can help solve the growing challenges around obsolescence, upgrades, and new builds — and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
The Panel Sessions in the RIA Conference provided lively discussion.
After years of fighting legacy and outdated drawings, companies are seeing the light and exploiting modern technology and services, such as those provided by Delta XD, to digitise and make advances in their own projects.
A packed agenda of presentations sparked plenty of discussion, with real interest in how digital tools are cutting costs and lead times across modernisation projects. The panel of expert speakers — including Daniel Lainchbury, Mike Ellis, and Geoff Sherwood — shared practical insight and real-world examples.
The mini expo stayed busy throughout the day, with visitors keen to explore the technology and talk through their own challenges. It was especially encouraging to see such a strong appetite for collaboration and innovation across the sector.
Within days of RSN 2025 closing, enthusiastic exhibitors were already booking stands for 2026, with demand almost outstripping supply.
While the exact format of next year’s show is yet to be decided, it will be once again in Derby Arena, on Thursday 2 July 2026. There will be a huge array of exhibitors, and there is bound to be something new and interesting for all of those involved in the rolling-stock sector. As always, there will be a co-located conference and ‘Meet The Buyer’ opportunities.
“Once again, RSN exceeded our expectations in 2025,” said organiser Kevin Lane. “Every year we strive to do better than last year, and once again we succeeded. Next year, for RSN2026, we will expand to 181 exhibition stands. These will go on open sale on 1 September, but we are already well over 80% full with current exhibitors who have rebooked, but the new floor plan provides many more spaces.
“The Jobson James Rail Meet the Buyer will also be expanded next year, with more buyers, more tables and more appointments.
“With plans already well underway, we can’t wait until 2 July next year when we can once again renew old friendships and meet new people. Demand for specialist rolling-stock products and services is always buoyant, whatever the state of the economy, and RSN 2026 will be a great shop window for the sector.”
Organisers Keven Parker and Kevin Lane breifly reflected on the success of the show whilst Co-Organiser, Sue Lane and her team, kept the huge number of visitors flowing at the entrance

One year ago, Rolling Stock Networking (RSN 2024) took place on the day of the General Election. This ushered in a new Labour government, the first since Gordon Brown was defeated in 2010.
The new government brought with it new policies – including a pledge to bring railway operations into public ownership.
One year into Labour’s five-year term, and changes have started to come through. South Western Railway was taken into public ownership on 25 May 2025 as the Department for Transport’s contract with First Group and MTR Corporation came to an end. Control passed over to DfT Operator Limited (DFTO), formerly known as DfT OLR (Operator of Last Resort) Holdings Limited but renamed in December 2024 as “the changes made by the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024 make appointing a publicly owned operator the default rather than a last resort,” to quote Secretary of State Heidi Alexander.
SWR joined LNER, Northern, Southeastern and Transpennine Express, which were already under the control of DfT OLR Holdings, directed by Robin Gisby from offices at London Waterloo.
Further operators will be taken into public ownership as current contracts expire. C2C will move over on 29 July 2025 and Greater Anglia on 12 October 2025.
Train operators in Wales and Scotland are already under the control of their devolved governments, with Transport for Wales Rail running the former Wales & Borders franchise since February 2021 and Scotrail Holdings taking over the operations of ScotRail and Caledonian Sleeper in April 2022 and June 2023 respectively.
While the former owning groups will lose their controlling interest, management at the individual operators, including brand names and rolling-stock leasing arrangements, are expected to remain unchanged, at least in the short term. Some rationalisation of back-office functions is anticipated, but no details have yet emerged.
Open-access passenger operators and rail freight are not being affected at this stage, though the Labour Government’s attitude to new open-access applications is not clear, with some confusing messaging having been released.
Shortly before last year’s exhibition, on 14 June 2024, the Conservative Government placed a £370 million contract with Alstom to build an additional 10 nine-car Aventra Class 345 trains for London’s Elizabeth line. This order was most welcome as the Litchurch Lane site in Derby had been running short of work.
As reported in the Show Guide for RSN 2024, further train orders were expected shortly. It was anticipated that around 1,000 vehicles could be ordered for Northern in 2025 for 2029 delivery, between 350 and 570 vehicles for Southeastern could be ordered as early as December 2024 for delivery in 2027, 20-70 new or converted units for Chiltern ordered early 2025 for 2029 delivery and up to 330 vehicles for Transpennine Express ordered mid-2025 for delivery mid-2029.
These figures were based on a letter from Conservative Rail Minister Huw Merriman in January 2024.
With the change in government, none of these orders have yet materialised, though discussions continue. Complaints about lack of work abound, and Parliament’s Transport Select Committee recently heard from both the Railway Industry Association (RIA) and Rail Forum on the consequences of the lack of orders. RIA’s David Clarke spoke of the ‘boom and bust’ nature of current and previous rolling stock orders and produced a chart showing this clearly.

Despite this, contracts for rolling stock do exist. Siemens Mobility is building 94 new trains for London Underground’s Piccadilly line, with 80 per cent of them being assembled at the new factory in Goole, East Yorkshire. Manufacture will be complete during 2027, but Siemens is hopeful that orders for similar trains for other LU lines will follow.
Hitachi Rail is building 33 five-car Aurora sets (Class 810) for East Midlands Railways, which should commence testing on the Midland main line later this year. It also has a contract for 14 five-car electric or bi-mode trains for First Group and Angel Trains, destined for service with Lumo and Hull Trains.
CAF has a contract to build 10 Class 897 tencar Civity tri-mode (25kV overhead / battery / diesel) trains for LNER, to enter service in 2027. The first two will be built in Spain and the remaining eight assembled in Newport, South Wales.
HS2, while it has been curtailed in its reach, still needs the trains that were ordered as part of the original Phase 1 plans. 54 electric multiple-units, each 200 metres long, will be built in the UK by a 50/50 joint venture of Hitachi Rail and Alstom. The body shells will be manufactured and partially fitted out at the Hitachi factory in Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham. Bogies will be manufactured by Alstom in Crewe. Assembly of the finished train, including the interior fit-out, wiring and electronics, will be carried out at Litchurch Lane, Derby. The first example could be in production in 2026.
Although Wabtec announced in February 2025 that it plans to close its Doncaster site, with the possible loss of 300 jobs, refurbishment of several classes of trains continues at other sites around the UK.
East Midlands Railway unveiled its first refurbished Class 170 train in April 2025, fitted with new seats and tables, modern power and charging facilities, refurbished toilets and new passenger-information systems. Arriva Traincare, formerly LNWR, will work its way through the 44-strong, Porterbrook-owned fleet at the rate of one per month, with the work lasting until 2029. Arriva Traincare is also refurbishing CrossCountry’s Class 170 trains –work on the 29-strong fleet will be completed in 2028.
Southeastern has announced that its Class 707 fleet, cascaded from South Western Railway, will now be retro-fitted with toilet cubicles, as the original trains were destined for short routes and did not have them fitted.
Open-access operator Lumo, currently running between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh, will commence a new service between London Euston and Stirling in Spring 2026. Five 6-car Class 222 trains, to be released by East Midlands Railway once its new Class 810 trains arrive, will be used for the service. Train owner Eversholt Rail will need to refurbish the trains for their new customer and convert them from the five and seven-car consists currently operated by EMR, and this work will be carried out by Alstom at its facility in Widnes.
Go-Op, a cooperatively owned train company, was approved in November 2024 to run services between Taunton and Weston-super-Mare, Westbury and Swindon, and between Frome and Westbury from December 2025. Trains are likely to be Class 150 units that will shortly come off lease from Transport for Wales.
Having acquired Grand Union Trains in 2024, First Group has permission to run open-access operations between London Paddington and Carmarthen, likely to be run under the Lumo brand using some of its Class 80X Hitachi-built trains from 2027. Lumo has also applied for an open-access agreement for trains between London and Hereford, one of 13 applications that rail regulator the Office of Rail and Road is currently considering.

Although Network Rail’s Control Period 7 (CP7) commenced on 1 April 2024, contractors have complained about the slow pace of work orders coming through. Network Rail has a number of framework contracts in place, but actual work is not reaching the supply chain. This is said to be partly due to Network Rail curtailing work at the end of CP6 that has since been restarted, but orders for this were already in place and it has delayed new CP7 work being authorised.
In addition, the previous government’s commitment to publish a Rail Network Enhancements Pipeline (RNEP) annually since 21 October 2019 has not been upheld by either party. An announcement of the new government’s plans for a pipeline of railway enhancement schemes is still awaited.
Although Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has made a commitment to HS2 to Birmingham, the Transpennine Route Upgrade and East-West Rail, she has not yet published other long-term plans for enhancements to the classic network.
In addition, questions have been asked as to why East-West Rail will commence operations between Oxford and Milton Keynes using Class 196 diesel-powered trains, and why the new line wasn’t electrified as part of the construction process.
According to statistics from the rail regulator, the number of passengers using the rail network continues to rise, despite complaints about the high cost of fares, poor customer service, delays and cancellations. There were 1.7 billion journeys in the 12 months to December 2024, a nine per cent increase on the 1.6 billion over the 12 months to December 2023. However, passengers are still making fewer passenger journeys than pre-pandemic levels, with levels for the fourth quarter of 2024 at 97 per cent relative to the 461 million in the same quarter five years ago (October to December 2019).
86.8 per cent of trains were punctual at their final destination using the Public Performance Measure classification (early or less than 5/10 minutes after the scheduled arrival time) in the latest quarter. The proportion of trains classified as cancellations in the latest quarter was 3.4 per cent.
Total passenger revenue was £2.9 billion in the latest quarter – an eight per cent increase on the £2.7 billion in the previous year (when adjusted for inflation). A total of 16.2 billion passenger kilometres were travelled in the latest quarter, up seven per cent from the 15.1 billion passenger kilometres travelled in the previous year.
For rail freight, 4,065 million net tonne kilometres were moved in the latest quarter (1 October to 31 December 2024), up six per cent compared with the same quarter the previous year. Intermodal non-maritime and biomass had the largest percentage increases in freight moved. The proportion of freight trains cancelled or arriving more than 15 minutes late was 9.7 per cent, 2.5 percentage points better (lower) than October to December 2023.
Summarising
the above, it seems that although the rail network has its challenges, the picture is not as bleak as some people make out. There is work around, for new trains, refurbishment, component supply and labour. There is still light at the end of the tunnel, it could just do with being a little bit closer.

Since 2016, Infodev has been working on developing the next generation of its counting technology. The goal was to not only surpass the performance of our previous generation of systems but also to go beyond “counting passengers”. Since our first pilot in 2019, the results have exceeded our expectation for both objectives. This technological advance has produced extremely accurate results, reaching a level of 99.8% accuracy (less than 2 errors per 1000 passenger counts).
The AI-based system can also detect different passenger types as well as objects typically found in public spaces and transit.
AI-based technology, enables us to explore and then meet requests for additional features, some of which are already implemented and others feed our constant innovation, conducted in collaboration with our clients. We are now elaborating upon some of these exciting new opportunities to harness additional functionality and data capture into our revolutionalry AI-based technology, enabling us to surpass alternative APC system capabilities.
