Welcome Message from Keven Parker

We welcome you all to Rolling Stock Networking, an international exhibition focused on Passenger and Freight Rolling Stock, Technical Enhancements, Depot Equipment, Ancillary Services and the Railway Supply Chain.

We are delighted to report that RSN 2024 sold out five months before the show date and that our 2025 edition on 3rd July 2025 is already building a head of steam !

The show has attracted the great and good with new builders, the heavy maintainers, systems integrators and depot equipment suppliers all taking their places, as anticipation builds for a great day of exhibiting and networking.

The show will always be free to attend, but offers the quality of content normally only seen at events that charge delegate fees. It is our mission to bring the lowest cost exhibiting opportunities to the market, enabling everyone in the rail industy to take part in the show, leading to the (new for 2024) Enterprise Zone.

We firmly believe that unlike any other show, RSN offers a community feel for the rail industry, where visitors and exhibitors are enthused by the buzz the event provides and the relaxed but efficient networking experience. RSN is the place where contacts are made and relationships are formed.

RSN 2024 now in its 5th edition, is a day well spent and is firmly established in the railway calendar.

Whilst the show is organised by a small team, we recognise the contribution that our substantial show partners bring to the event.

We particularly thank Rail Business Daily, RailwayNews, Rail Partners, BusinessDaily, Young Rail Professionals, Railway Industry Association, Jobson James Rail, Derby Arena, Derby Live and the many friends that have helped us to shape an event with something for everyone.

RSN remains a show that is organised by railway people for railway people. The event is not owned by a media company and everyone in our team works day to day in the rail industry.

We would like to think that our everyday engagement in the industry has helped us to shape a superb event for you, that whilst affordable and accessible, also delivers high quality opportunities and information to help you to increase your market share in rail.

We are especially pleased to continue our support for the event charity, Railway Children. who are joined this year by a further organisation that seeks to educate children in the dangers of the railway - Rail Safe Friendly.

Most importantly we thank our exhibitors and visitors and wish that you all have a very successful show.

1 Great Show 166 Participants Endless Opportunities

Rolling Stock Networking Exhibition and Conference returns to Derby on 4th July

Rolling Stock Networking (RSN), the UK’s leading rolling stock and depot supply-chain event, will return to the Derby Arena on Thursday 4 July.

Combining a busy exhibition –all stands were sold out months ago – with a conference, a meet-the-buyer session, a ‘Trailblazers’ event for younger rail colleagues and advice on exporting from the Department for Business and Trade, attracts visitors from all over the country to Derby for the one-day show, which is valued by exhibitors and visitors alike.

Following the 2023 event, comment such as this from one exhibitor were common: “Footfall has been high due to the great central location, the quality of conversations has been good because we have had everyone from the new train builders and TOCs and the general supply chain and it’s been really good value for us.”

Visitors were equally effusive: “What an amazing day at RSN! Many thanks to the new people I have met and talked with today. Lots of potential new leads to turn in to legitimate business arrangements.”

Sponsorship from Jobson James Rail –The Rail Insurance Broker, Westermo Data Communications and others has enabled the organisers to bring to the sector an event that will be bigger, better and even more well-attended than in previous years.

“ The one day show is valued by visitors and exhibitors alike.”

The Exhibition

It is, of course, the exhibition itself that will form the centrepiece of the show. Over 150 organisations have taken stands on which they will show off their latest products and services.

Those stands will cover a wide range of technologies and applications. It is impossible to cover them all here, but, to give a few examples, Fortec UK will be showing its Autronic customised DC/DC converters, Canadian company Infodev EDI is bringing its new automatic passenger-counting system that is based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the r2p Group will display and explain its intelligent technology systems that incorporate CCTV, automatic passenger counting, and network audio solutions.

Complete Cyber provides robust infrastructure, cyber security, phishing and SaaS e-learning platform and data analytics solutions that are tailored specifically to the needs of railway networks. In contrast, Diamond Rail Services show great support to charity and will be hosting Ethstat on its stand - the UK’s leading social enterprise CIC specialising in branded merchandise, ethical hampers, furniture, print and office supplies.

The Exhibition

continued...

DB ESG, a leading specialist provider of rolling stock engineering solutions for the UK rail industry, is part of DB Systemtechnik – one of the largest rolling stock consultancies in Europe. Its world-class experts will be available on the company’s stand at RSN 2024.

BCIMO will be telling visitors how it can support companies working across the whole of the rail sector at its unique rail innovation centre in Dudley. Future Welsh test track the Global Centre for Rail Excellence (GCRE) will also be at RSN 2024, with maps of the facility and details of its planned phased opening.

Rail Partners’ Conference

Running alongside RSN 2024 – in fact, above it on the mezzanine floor - Rail Partners will organise a conference that will focus on delivering a high-performing railway through rolling-stock innovation and depot transformation.

In the Rail Partners’ conference sponsored by STADLER and Hosted by Mark Gaynor and Neil Ovenden of Rail Partners; attendees will hear from leading industry speakers from companies including Greater Anglia, Angel Trains, the Global Centre for Rail Excellence, Stadler, East West Rail, Rail Forum and the Railway Industry Association (RIA)

Visitors to the exhibition will find stands showing everything from cable connectors to electrical machines, from windscreen wipers to complete trains, from depot equipment to a complete turnkey facility and from consultancy to insurance.

There truly will be something for everyone at RSN 2024.

This year, the Rail Partners’ conference will address two important themes:

• How can innovation deliver higher performing and more cost-effective rolling stock for new and existing fleets?

• How can depots enable a high performing railway and create great places to work?

The first theme will be addressed in the morning. Following an introduction from Ben Parry, Greater Anglia’s head of engineering, Matt Prosser of Angel Trains and Kelly Warburton of GCRE will look at what innovation can offer passengers and how testing will enable future rolling-stock innovation.

A panel discussion on balancing the needs of today’s railway with pushing the boundaries of rolling stock innovation, during which the earlier speakers will be joined by East West Rail’s head of innovation Daisy Chaplain-Chamberlain, will close the morning session.

“ The Rail Partners’ conference will explore rolling stock innovation and depot transformation”

With depot-based activity often out of sight, the two afternoon session speakers, Steve Mitchell, head of fleet north for Greater Anglia, and James McCaffery, UK head of programmes at Stadler, will look at how technology, tools, and new planning and operating systems can support safer and more productive depots.

Alstom Central Rivers

A panel discussion will follow, with the two speakers joined by Cat Appleby, membership and engagement director for Rail Forum, and Richard Carr, business engagement manager at RIA. Together, they will explore how clients and suppliers can work together to unlock the full potential of depots.

The Rail Partners conference will be open to all attendees of Rolling Stock Networking, free of charge.

RSN 2024 10 Meet with HS2, CAF, Stadler and mingle with Train Operators and Train Owners. All in just one day

Meet the Buyer

Organised by Jobson James Rail – The Rail Insurance Broker, buyers and procurement specialists from Alstom, Hitachi Rail, Porterbrook, Clayton Equipment, Keolis Amey and WH Davis will be on hand at RSN 2024 to meet with current and potential suppliers.

Meet the Buyer sessions give suppliers the priceless opportunity to spend up to 20 minutes talking with potential customers to ascertain their needs, discuss how those needs can be met, and to plan a follow-up meeting.

While these meetings are free, they do need to be booked in advance so exhibitors wishing to take advantage of a Meet the Buyer session should apply through the RSN website as soon as possible.

In addition, HS2, Stadler and CAF are exhibiting in the main hall, so representatives on those stands can be approached directly by visitors and exhibitors alike, without appointment.

“Meet the Buyer sessions give suppliers the priceless opportunity to spend up to 20 minutes talking with potential customers ”

Exporting Opportunities

As part of Meet the Buyer, but also accepting drop-in meetings, International Trade Adviser Bill Smith will be attending RSN 2024. He specialises in Advanced Manufacturing & Rail and supports the Midlands Engine, a coalition of Councils, Combined Authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEP), Universities and businesses across the region that actively work with Government to build a collective identity.

Bill is able to connect companies with the appropriate services and information that is available through DBT and can help them to develop an Export Plan, mentoring them through the process as he has many years of exporting experience in Rail and other highly regulated industries.

RIA Trailblazers’ Breakfast

Working in association with Young Rail Professionals, RIA will be organising the Trailblazers Breakfast, running between 8am and 10am on the day of RSN.

This initiative will bring together young and experienced professionals from across the industry, to enable them to learn from each other, make new connections, and celebrate a vibrant and diverse rail workforce.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a ‘plus one’ – senior professionals should bring a junior colleague or mentee while more junior professionals can bring a senior colleague (although this is not compulsory).

This event will feature an early careers workshop with David Basset, Graduate & Apprentice Manager for Network Rail. RIA Business Engagement Manager Richard Carr will be on hand to oversee proceedings and ensure there is enough bacon to go round!

Enigma Seven and the E7 Zone

Companies, particularly those new to rail, often ask the organisers of RSN for assistance in developing their business in the rail sector. To meet this need, Enigma Seven is now providing a premium service for exhibitors looking to develop and grow their presence in the traction and rolling stock market and within its associated supply chain.

The Enigma Seven team has years of experience working with Rolling Stock Companies (ROSCOs) and SMEs and building relationships with the Department for Transport, Network Rail, local government and devolved authorities, asset owners, passenger & freight operators, owning groups, train builders and all levels of the rail industry supply chain. Shane Duffy, and a trusted network of associates, work flexibly with clients to help them grow.

Enigma Seven will have its own zone at the RSN 2024 exhibition, showing off the talents and products of five of its clients (OE Electronics, Train FX, Polarteknik TDS, Modux and FISA) and also answering questions from exhibitors and visitors keen to know more.

Andy Bagnall chief executive of Rail Partners opened the 2023 edition of RSN

Networking

As well as the exhibition – and the conference and Meet the Buyer sessions – it is, of course, the networking that attracts so many visitors. With around 1.700 people expected through the doors in six hours, it will be almost impossible to move around the exhibition floor without bumping into someone you know, or somebody you should.

Meeting people on stands, at the coffee bar or in the aisles is an important part of the RSN experience. Having friends and colleagues introduce their friends and colleagues is what this networking event is all about. So, bring a notepad, plenty of business cards (ignore people who say that cards are old hat – they aren’t!) and get networking!

Access and parking

The Derby Arena is easy to find – it’s the rounded goldcoloured building standing on Pride Park next to the Derby County football stadium. Sat nav users can just enter DE24 8JB or search for Derby Arena.

There is plenty of car parking available, and the organisers have worked a little magic to ensure that this is entirely free to exhbitors and visitors for 2024 and all later editions.

Rail Partners’ conference at Rolling Stock

Networking returns for a second year

Following its success last year, the conference from Rail Partners at Rolling Stock Networking is returning for a second year. Drawing upon Rail Partners’ industry expertise, the conference will focus on delivering a high performing railway through rolling stock innovation and depot transformation.

Hosted by Mark Gaynor and Neil Ovenden of Rail Partners, attendees will hear from leading industry speakers from companies including Greater Anglia, Angel Trains, the Global Centre for Rail Excellence, Stadler, East West Rail, Rail Forum and the Railway Industry Association (RIA). This year, the conference will address two important themes.

How can innovation deliver higher performing and more cost-effective rolling stock for new and existing fleets?

How can depots enable a high performing railway and create great places to work?

Following an introduction from Greater Anglia’s head of engineering, Ben Parry, the morning session will consider how innovation can deliver higher performing and more cost-effective rolling stock for new and existing fleets.

Matt Prosser, the asset management director at Angel Trains, will then focus on what rolling stock innovation can offer to customers. Kelly Warburton, chief commercial officer at GCRE, will follow by looking at the role of railway test facilities in enabling innovation in the future.

To close the morning session, Daisy Chapman-Chamberlain, innovation manager at East West Rail, will join the morning speakers on a panel to discuss how to balance the needs and costs of the railway today whilst pushing the boundaries of rolling stock innovation.

The event is free to attend for all delegates to RSN 2024.

Visit www.rsnevents.co.uk to register.

In the afternoon session the focus will turn to transforming depots to enable a high performing railway.

With depot-based activity often out of sight, the two afternoon session speakers, Steve Mitchell, head of fleet north for Greater Anglia and James McCaffery, UK head of programmes at Stadler, will look at how technology, tools, and new planning and operating systems can support safer and more productive depots.

The afternoon speakers will then join Cat Appleby, membership and engagement director for Rail Forum, and Richard Carr, business engagement manager at RIA, on a panel to explore how clients and suppliers can work together to unlock the full potential of depots.

During the panel sessions, audience participation will be encouraged. There will be opportunities for attendees to put their questions to the speakers and to take part in the debate on the conference’s topical discussion points. Rail Partners’ conference is open to all attendees of Rolling Stock Networking and is free of charge.

Providing delegates with a unique opportunity to hear from industry leaders and to be involved at the Rail Partners Conference at RSN 2024....the only real question is can you afford not to be there?

What does the future of Rolling Stock Manufacturing look like ?

We sat down with Richard Lindoe, Managing Director of Armstrong Group, to find out more about the capabilities of the company and get his take on what the future of Rolling Stock Manufacturing will look like in the coming years...

Who or what is Armstrong Group?

Armstrong Group has 3 interlinked units in North Coventry with 16.000sqm of manufacturing capacity. We specialise in Pressings and Fabrications using Steel, Aluminium and Carbon Fibre Composites. Automotive, Construction, Defence, Aerospace, and Rail sectors.

Integrator role? How does that work?

If we take a bill of materials (BOM) and understand how they are assembled using a joint workshop we can find a solution to reduce part count or improve the Process. This means the customer is gaining the benefit of less inventory to manage (parts) and improves their own assembly time. This has been part of my life in the Aerospace and Automotive Industries for many years. We are finding other Industries that are adopting this approach. I guess you could say we are on the right track......

What are you trying to develop with your Rolling Stock opportunities?

It’s not just about part development it’s what we want to deliver for our customers. Modules. If we can reduce the customers part count and assemble Modules, or Sub Modules we are part of a turn-key approach from Design through prototyping and Production. It’s a long-term partnership approach giving the Customer the ‘Integrator’ role.

What is your best asset?

Our Team. Without a great team we could not deliver, without the talent pool we have there is no company. It’s so simple, People look after your business. Treat them with respect.

Achieving net zero targets: Orange Train Wash to showcase revolutionary cleaning system at RSN 2024

F ol l owing an exciting year of research and development, Or an ge Train Wash is set for a m uc h -anticipated return to t h e Derby Arena for RSN 2024.

W i t h a revolutionary approach

t o tr ain exterior maintenance c o u p l ed with trailblazing cleanliness standards and ra dical e n vironmental, carbon reduc tio n, i ns ta llation, productivity and costsaving benefits, Orange Train Was h is set to become a disruptor i n t he r ail industry, helping TOCs and d epot managers realise their cos t and carbon saving ambitions.

Game-changing results for water and carbon savings

Saving 98% more water than traditional cleaning systems, Orange Train Wash brings sustainability to the forefront of the train cleaning market. Thanks to its modular nature and innovative plug and play connectivity, installation of the system can be completed in just five days.

Since last year’s demo at R SN, th e O r an g e Tr ain Wash team has been w o r king hard behind the scenes surveying UK rail depots and t r i alling its latest technology in th eir w ashhouses.

Results from the trials have be en impressive, with 16 four-car tra i ns ab l e to be washed at a cost of l es s t han £1 per carriage- an incre dib l e cost saving compared to competitor w as hes

Re cent studies carried out b y t he OTW team have also shown tha t an existing 40-carriage-per-day train w as h system can cost opera to rs u p t o £330,000 annually. With O r an g e Tr ain Wash, those costs c an be sla shed to less than £5,000, a n i nc r edible 98.48% reduction i n c o sts!

A powerful, intelligent clean OTW’s chemical-free solution uses 50º deionised water and powerful air blades and brushes, which push the water back down into the Envirosump water catchment system, ready to be pumped back into each machine for recycling. The filters clean the water at 15 litres per minute back into the larger clean water tank ready for the next clean, with no drainage required.

Its 60 water jets allow for an eightcar train to be cleaned within less than four minutes, and with a minimal footprint either side of the train, it provides huge savings on the civil engineering costs required for other cleaning solutions. The modular system can be moved where it is needed, rather than shunting trains within the depot and cleans trains at a speed of three miles per hour.

The Orange Train Wash system maintains the water temperature at 20º before heating it back to 50º for the next approaching train.

This means that, unlike conventional train washes, winter conditions won’t disrupt train washing programmes.

Featuring easy-to-use reporting software, the system also provides accurate reports of carbon and water savings.

Orange Train Wash’s revolutionary train cleaning system is on a mission to provide the industry with a more sustainable and costeffective way of cleaning trains –with significant interest already from across the world, from the USA to Australia and Saudi Arabia.

Helping train operators achieve their net zero targets

With the rail industry’s Net Zero 2050 targets set to play a huge role in the governance of TOCs in the years ahead, depot managers are now, more than ever, looking at ways to hit their carbon reduction targets, as well as reducing cleaning costs.

2 RSN Derby 2024 RSN 2024 38

With Orange Train Wash’s technology, sensors can provide accurate and real-time data on train cleaning times, water quality and usage, power output and efficiency, it offers TOCs the evidence they need to demonstrate they are meeting their KPIs.

Live demonstrations coming to Derby Arena

At RSN 2024, Orange Train Wash will showcase its 1:10 ratio demonstrator machine, which is a working model of the live system, with all of the working components on display.

Discussing the attendance at RSN 2024, Martin Whitbread, OTW founder, said: “Following an exciting year of research and development, we’re thrilled to be returning to Derby to showcase our demonstrator at RSN 2024. The event will provide the perfect platform for us to demonstrate to TOCs and depot managers how Orange Train Wash can deliver significant carbon and cost savings while helping them meet their KPIs.
