STAR Annual Report 2011 - 2012
Preface September is the time we close the books on the past year and start fresh with a new one. However, before we leave you in the capable hands of the 35th board I would like to give you an overview of what STAR has done the past year, how this year’s strategy has panned out and how STAR did financially with the STAR Annual report 2011-2012. From september 2011 on, about 270 Active Members have worked hard and dedicated not only on organizing great events and activities for the students of the Rotterdam School of Management but also on developing themselves in doing so. It is these students, their devotion to the cause and willingness to go the extra mile that have made this year, and this association, into the success story it is today. Together with them we have enriched the lifes of thousands of RSM students by organizing over 60 events through 57 committees and Master Study Clubs. I would like to thank you for your committment and enthousiasm. The success story of the past year could not have been complete with the support and advice of the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University and our corporate partners. They have contributed to a sustainable future for STAR and the extracurricular development of the RSM student. Even in these hard times with harsh government regulations.
Another crucial factor in the success of this year are my fellow boardmembers. I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished together and STAR could not have had this excellent year without you. You made STAR a home and inspiration for me and many other RSM students and I will be forever grateful for that. Last but most certainly not least I would like to thank the Supervisory Board and the Verification Committee for their wise advice and support that helped us through this year. I hope this Annual Report will give you some idea of the outstanding year we all had at STAR and I hope you will enjoy reading it. It is time to close the books and open a new one. I wish all the best to the 35th STAR board and hope they do even better than us! Yours sincerely,
Thomas Snuverink Chairman 34th STAR Board 2011-2012

STAR Annual Report 2011 - 2012
About STAR STAR is the study association of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). With 7,000 members, STAR is Europe’s largest study association and above all the most active and professional study association in the Netherlands. STAR’s mission is to enrich RSM student life; from various perspectives, offering students to join events or organize these themselves. Each year, around 280 dedicated active members organize STAR projects that reach thousands of students.
The best known events are the STAR Management Week, which consists of social, academic and career events; International Business Study, where students conduct research for companies in an emerging country and the Erasmus Recruitment Days, which is the largest recruitment event of the Benelux organized by students.
STAR provides students with the opportunity to get in contact with their fellow students, their studies and a broad range of companies. This is facilitated by the great amount of activities that are organized by numerous committees and Master Study Clubs. Apart from academic activities like speakers events, case competitions or selling books, STAR also aims to organize social activities as well, ranging from IBA events, introduction days to parties. RSM students can join us abroad with a ski or sailing trip, international weeks, study trips or community development.

STAR Annual Report 2011 - 2012
History In 1969, the ‘Interfaculteit Bedrijfskunde’ (and later on ‘Interuniversitair Instituut Bedrijfskunde’ - IIB) was established, a joint initiative of various faculties of both Erasmus University and Delft University of Technology. In 1977, S.V.I.I.B. (studievereniging IIB) was founded, an association focused on external contacts, internal contacts with scientific staff, and, of course, mutual contacts among business students. The exact meaning of S.V.I.I.B. was lost in 1984, when the faculty of Business Administration became an official part of Erasmus University, and so the name changed to Sviib.
Over the past 34 years, STAR has become an association of influence, diversity, and professionalism. With more than 7,000 members, including 280 active members, we can proclaim to be the largest study association in Europe. Next year we will celebrate STAR’s 7th lustrum.
As with the establishment of Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) as we know it today, which led to a more cohesive organisation of BA, IBA, and MBA studies, the aim was to achieve the same cooperation among study associations. Several daughter associations (Dutch: disputen) were established and later on consolidated as Master Study Clubs. More importantly, in early August 2005, Sviib and BActive (association for students of the programme in International Business Administration) merged to become STAR (Study Association of the Rotterdam School of Management), an association with a bit of both worlds and an international focus.

STAR Annual Report 2011 - 2012
Strategy In the policy, the XXXIVth STAR Board (hereinafter called “we”) would like to stipulate that making significant change to a large organization such as STAR requires time, managed in a time span over multiple years. Inherent to annual policy creation is that every board has to reinvent the wheel time after time. To account for this issue, we wrote our policy including operational points for the present, tactical points to start now and finish later, and strategic points for the future. All in all this policy will serve STAR’s overall mission: “enriching student life” by making sure that we provide the optimal service to our student in the present, while preparing STAR for the future making sure we are still providing our services in the next 10 years. This led us to the following slogan for next year:
“Maximizing STAR in the present while preparing STAR for the future” XXXIVth STAR Board 2011 - 2012
STAR Annual Report 2011 - 2012
23
Strategy To reach this goal, we have structured our policy around three main pillars:
Improving processes
on an operational level. In the short term, we believe STAR can regain capacity and resources. By improving processes, the Board will have increased capacity to support active members, focus on strategic issues, and to increase efficiency and professionalism overall. This pillar is divided into 3 areas: • Efficiency • Standardiation and Documentation • IT Restructuring
Enhancing membership value
on a tactical level. In the medium term, we believe STAR needs to prove its value to members, passive and active. We will take the first step by thoroughly analyzing the current portfolio of activities and the value added. We aim for continuity, by balancing the portfolio to make sure STAR remains competitive and will evolve with markets in time. The implementation of the portfolio analysis will start with the succeeding Board, and possibly continued by future Boards. This pillar is specified into these three areas: • Non-recruitment value • Active Member value • Portfolio analysis
Embedding STAR in the RSM
on a strategic level. In the long term, we believe that STAR should be an integral and indissoluble part of RSM. The RSM is one of the main stakeholders, who helped STAR from the cradle to our current position. However, we are still not serving the entire student population of the RSM and are not as involved as desired. We aim to be a secondary factor for upcoming students choosing for the RSM. Achieving this goal would be greatly stimulated by automatic membership. The implementation of embedding STAR in the RSM will start this year by strengthening our relations with different parties within the RSM. This last pillar is split-up into two areas: • Strengthening the relationship with the RSM • Involve all RSM students in STAR

STAR Annual Report 2011 - 2012
A policy is made in the beginning of the year to structure the the targets set by the board. These targets are set to make sure that we won’t be watching the shop, but really put an effort towards improving STAR. However, a board year is very dynamic, and plans made in the beginning of the year can be outdated half way. That is why we would like to emphasize that this policy was a guideline and that the results sometimes are not in line with what was stated, or some parts even not executed do to an overestimation of our time available. We have added an out of scope section in the results to give these great results a place in this document.
Key results Improving Processes • Implementation of the STAR Webshop • General MSC Commercial Leaflet • Monthly MSC mailings for all MSC • Interface App • Increased use of aqcuisition tools • Empowered board assistent Key Results Embedding STAR in RSM • Enhanced commercial cooperation through the CorpNet meetings • Indirect seat on the Faculty Council • Enhanced communication with Academic Directors • Close cooperation on several STAR projects (International Week/Case Competition)
Key results Enhancing Membership Value • New Book Contract offering improved value • STAR Card • Update SMW concept • Development of STAR Academy training platform for Active Members
Key Achievements Outside Scope: • Beginning made in second and third main sponsor acquisition • First STAR Premium Partner Diner • Development of new and improved STAR Corporate Identity • Richard Branson at a STAR event • First STAR Surftrip • International Business Studies Erasmus Consultancy Project • MSC Active Members Day
We are very proud of these results and the Active Members who have helped us with achieving these great developments. With this plan and these results we have worked hard to improve STAR and perpare STAR for the future. However, as mentioned in the introduction, good policy is something that is carried over the years and it is up to the 35th STAR board to continue the upward spiral!
