SOCIETY OF THE SACRED HEART, UNITED STATES — CANADA
Who we are...
We are the United States – Canada Province of the Society of the Sacred Heart, an international community of women religious in the Catholic Church, known as the Religious of the Sacred Heart, or RSCJ (Religieuses du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus, the name in French). The Society of the Sacred Heart was founded in 1800, in Paris, France, by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat. In 1818, Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne brought the Society to North America, establishing the foundation of the now United States – Canada Province.
Our mission is to discover and reveal God’s love in the heart of the world through the service of education.
Today, more than 1,300 RSCJ throughout the world continue to live out this mission in 43 countries
LETTER FROM THE Provincial
Dear Friends,
Thank you for your continued support of the Religious of the Sacred Heart in Canada and the United States. Your generosity, your prayers, and your steadfast commitment sustain and inspire us every day.
In our 2025 Annual Report, we hope you will see the impact of your decision to support the Society of the Sacred Heart. Your generosity makes it possible for us to carry forward our mission through ministries that serve children and young people, which allow spiritual accompaniment for students, faculty, alumnae, alumni, and associates, all of whom are searching for meaning and hope. These pages show and tell of lives touched and strengthened — made possible through your decision to give. Your action is a part of our mission to discover and reveal God’s love in the heart of the world. Thank you.
Your gifts to The Giving Fund play a vital role in ensuring compassionate, high-quality care for our elder sisters. Because of you, they are able not only to receive the care they deserve, but also to continue sharing their wisdom and presence as mentors, spiritual companions, school trustees, and volunteers.
We are also deeply grateful to those who have joined The Cor Unum Legacy Society. Through bequests and legacy gifts, you help secure the future of our mission for generations to come. Such thoughtful commitments are a profound expression of faith and solidarity, and they encourage us in our service.
As members of the Family of the Sacred Heart, we believe we are united in the Heart of Christ. Please know that you and your loved ones are remembered in our prayers with gratitude.
Gratefully and in prayer,
Suzanne Cooke, RSCJ Provincial

LETTER FROM THE Director of Advancement
Dear Donors and Friends,
Thank you for your incredible support of the Society of the Sacred Heart’s mission to discover and reveal God’s love in the heart of the world through the service of education. What a pleasure it is to write to thank you for the many ways you are engaged with the RSCJ year after year. We are truly thankful. Please note: This annual report covers the period of September 1, 2024, through August 31, 2025.
When you are curious about how you help our sisters to stay active in ministry, I invite you to watch a video of Gina Rodee, RSCJ, who volunteers at the University of San Diego.
You may also find interesting a recent livestream event entitled “Who is Pope Leo XIV? A Panel Discussion with People Who Know Him.” In it we hear from Provincial Suzanne Cooke, RSCJ, and Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, a noted theologian. Sister Osiek was once a teacher and spiritual advisor of Father Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo. You can watch a recording of the February 11 event, which was held at Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami.
Throughout the year, we write to tell you about needs of the sisters. With 46 percent of Religious of the Sacred Heart living in retirement communities, your gifts are needed more than ever to help us address maturing infrastructure, secure additional spaces in retirement centers, and meet the growing costs associated with health care and long-term care.
Bequests from donors who named the Society of the Sacred Heart’s USC Province in their will, sometimes many years ago, arrive a few at a time annually. These make a positive impact, support the RSCJ ministries, and help us manage current and future elder care costs. To learn more about bequests to the Society visit our website
Overall, I hope you see that the difference your gifts make is vital for the sisters’ quality of life. You support their well-being, and you understand their wishes to serve God’s people as educators, spiritual directors, mentors, school trustees, and volunteers. You encourage them to continue their mission-driven activities. With grateful hearts, they all say thank you, thank you, thank you!
Best regards,
Anne L. Wiehagen, CFRE Director of Advancement

Our Priorities
From the very start, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat called Religious of the Sacred Heart to respond to the urgent needs of God’s people by demonstrating a contemplative sensitivity and regard for the human dignity of each person through the service of education. Today, in accordance with the Society of the Sacred Heart Constitutions, and the call to discover and reveal God’s love, RSCJ choose to express this mission through a set of four global Apostolic Priorities in response to the needs of the world.
As we seek ways to revitalize our mission in the world today, to reorganize ourselves to foster collaboration, coordination, and communication for greater impact both locally and globally, we recognize that there are four core components — four portals leading us to the same end: Education, Spirituality, JPIC (Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation) and Formation. These are not arbitrarily named components. Careful reflection indicates that these core elements are different facets of the same reality: they illuminate all our service in the Church.
EDUCATION
Education is inherent to the process of humanization and, therefore, is at the heart of our mission to discover and reveal the love of the Heart of Jesus. Education is the process of seeking truth and understanding humanity. Generating learning through experience, encouragement, and mutual discovery, we engage all the members of the community in processes that are inherently relational, dynamic, dialogic and reciprocal. Integral formation encourages the virtues and habits essential to live a fully human life. It includes any process through which learnings are exchanged; experiences are shared; skills, knowledge and attitudes are developed, imparted, acquired — all within the contexts of formal education, popular education, and socio-educational projects. We carry out our work of education across all generations — children, youth and adults.
FORMATION
“Adapted to the capabilities of each one and directed towards responding to the challenges of the world, formation envisages the development of our spiritual, human and apostolic life.” (Society of the Sacred Heart Constitutions, §72)
It is essential that we work together in training ourselves and our mission partners to know and understand the charism of Madeleine Sophie Barat, the spirit of the Society, the contemplative dimension of our educational philosophy and our view that education is transformative. Our hope is to foster spiritual, human growth and apostolic life at every level — in the context of initial and ongoing formation of RSCJ, formation with our lay partners in mission, for the transmission and sustainability of our charism, for leadership and processes of change and transformation.
JUSTICE, PEACE, & INTEGRITY OF CREATION
In the face of the urgent needs in our world, this focus of passion, hope, and energy impels us to act on our desire to become better informed and educated about the interrelationships among the local, regional, national, and international levels so that we may work more effectively toward structural and systemic change. We search for ways to respond to the four imperatives of our time: dealing with relationships of power; working for transformation and willingness to be transformed; caring for our common home; and welcoming those who seek refuge and hope for a better future. Our steadfast commitment to our world in need of justice, peace, and the integrity of creation, beckons us towards transformative engagement and action, especially in situations of vulnerability.
SPIRITUALITY
Our spirituality impels us toward transformation through contemplation of the pierced Heart of Jesus in the fractures and potentiality of our world. The deepening of interiority and the core encounter with Jesus that sensitizes us to his presence in ourselves, in others, in our world — through the contemplative dimension of our life as well as through accompaniment of retreats, spiritual direction, pastoral work, and evangelization. At the same time, we strive to open spaces, in our widely diverse contexts, within which our lay sisters and brothers, our partners in mission, can explore, develop and express their spirituality. This allows us to listen to one another more deeply and to listen for the voice of God speaking through each one.

Serving at the Border
RSCJ presence at the border continues in a variety of ways as Lisa Buscher, RSCJ, helps address the needs of vulnerable people through a collaborative of women religious supporting people on the move at the CaliforniaMexico border region. She is the chair of the Collaborative for Border Ministries, serves on the board of the Transborder Coalition and continues to be support staff with Border Compassion, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
FY25 marked her third year of involvement in border ministry. Sister Buscher cohosts crossover events with Border Compassion, bringing volunteers to support migrants living at a shelter in Mexicali, Mexico. From October 2024June 2025, Border Compassion hosted 11 crossover events, bringing 280 volunteers to accompany 228 people on the move seeking legal pathways into the United States. Additionally, she supported those who accompany people on the move through post-crossover theological reflection sessions and offered retreat and respite space for those serving the migrant community in San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico.
In FY25, Sister Buscher helped secure grant funding to support various workshops for border ministry and assisted with Spanish speaking retreats in San Diego. She presented about border ministry to the deacons and their wives of the Diocese of San Diego in March 2025, and to the CSJs of Orange, California, at their congregation’s Assembly in July 2025. She was a panelist speaker at the Union of Superiors General International Assembly in May 2025, where she gave a presentation entitled “Women Religious: Bearers of Hope in Difficult Situations” to 1000 congregational leaders from around the world. The presentation was translated into more than 12 languages.
Sister Buscher also partners with the RSCJ from the Province of Mexico in their new project with people on the move in Tijuana. Her passion to bring God’s love and compassion to support this vulnerable population of people has been integral to the Society’s commitment to justice and being bearers of hope in our blessed and broken world.

Associates of the Sacred Heart
Associates of the Sacred Heart are women and men who commit to live out the spirituality of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Sarah Cassidy of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Angela LaGrange Scott of Houston, Texas, serve as co-chairs of the Associates Leadership Team. Currently, there are 15 active Associates groups throughout the province, two of which are virtual. There are 186 active Associates and two discerning a commitment to become Associates. Associate groups meet monthly.
FY25 was full of rich Province-wide formation experiences, in-person gatherings, and opportunities to deepen relationships among Associates from the United States, Canada and Mexico. In the beginning of FY25, Associates attended the Sacred Heart Summit in Chicago. Later in July 2025, they hosted Together as One Heart, held in St. Charles, Missouri, which brought together over 42 Associates and RSCJ — 12 from Mexico. Following this gathering, some Associates joined with partners in mission to participate in the opening days of the RSCJ USC Assembly.
This past year, a new Associates group was established in New York City under the leadership of Elizabeth Guillory and with support from Associate Jane Steinfels. The Associates also hosted several Zoom presentations with RSCJ and participated in the Busy Person’s Retreat and hiking retreat offered by Sophie’s Well.
Notably, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Sophie’s canonization, USC Associates partnered with the province communications office to produce and share 25 virtual reflections on social media throughout the month of May. A new online merchandise store featuring Associate wares was also launched.

Welcoming Communities
Welcoming Communities are intentional communities that offer a variety of programs, gatherings, retreats, volunteer opportunities and accommodation options for young adults committed to social justice and spiritual growth. There are four welcoming communities run by Religious of the Sacred Heart located in the Province.
Anne Montgomery House | Washington, D.C.
Anne Montgomery House is an intentional community that provides an experience of community living for young women interested in spirituality and justice. The house is named for Anne Montgomery, RSCJ, a dedicated peacemaker. The house also serves as a meeting place for a larger group of young adults seeking to integrate spirituality and justice. Community members find joy in the inter-generational, inter-faith and international community life offered at Anne Montgomery House.
During FY 25, Anne Montgomery House community members came from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Germany, Belarus, Italy and Ecuador as well as from Massachusetts, New Jersey, Louisiana, Minnesota, Washington D.C. and Virginia. They participated in Advent and Lenten Taizé prayer at the Stuart Center and, along with other young adults from the local SacredHeartDNA group (called “Heart to Heart”), took part in a day-long discernment retreat with Barbara Quinn, RSCJ. Those in the community who were U.S. citizens showed up at several marches and rallies this past year in support of immigrants and other vulnerable groups. And one highlight of the year was the wedding of a former resident from Venezuela, which took place right in the prayer corner of our living room!
Heart of Oak Community | Boston, Massachusetts
The Heart of Oak Community is home to three Religious of the Sacred Heart and one Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The community’s monthly gatherings for young adults entered its seventh year in FY25. Initially, most young adult participants at these gatherings came from the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, but now the group has expanded as regular attendees invite friends and colleagues. Jesuit Volunteers have also become a steady presence at community gatherings.
Young adult participants offer topics they would like to explore and reflect on throughout the year. Of those covered in the past year include Sabbath Rest, Pilgrims of Hope, and Forgiveness. Each gathering includes a potluck dinner to which all contribute. Following the meal, they pray and reflect on the night’s theme. The space is warmed by a lovely fire during the winter months.
Barb Quinn, RSCJ, remarked that sharing amongst participants this past year has become deeper and broader and that members express feeling more at home with each other. If you find yourself in the Boston area, the Heart of Oak community would love to have you join them.
Welcoming Communities
Rebecca House | White Plains, New York
The Rebecca House Community welcomes young adults seeking an experience of community, reflection, and social action. Most guests at Rebecca House are international visitors who come with a desire to engage in service, work with nonprofit organizations, or support province initiatives such as SacredHeartDNA, a young adult and vocation ministry initiative.
As a welcoming community, Rebecca House also provides hospitality to several Religious of the Sacred Heart, both from within the province and from abroad, who visit the area to attend meetings, retreats, or events, enriching our shared life through their presence, prayer, and companionship.
In FY25, the community welcomed members of the SacredHeartDNA team, who came to offer a retreat at Manhattanville University, enriching both our community life and our ministry with young adults. In addition, participants from the Jubilee of Youth from the Sacred Heart Schools in Chicago spent the Thanksgiving weekend with the community, sharing conversation and time together.
Rebecca House also welcomed a young woman who joined the community as an intern, offering her an experience of community life and service. This year Rebeccas House will welcome another intern, continuing our commitment to accompanying young women in their formative and vocational journeys.
Visitors and guests participate in community prayer, shared meals, social activities, and outings, fostering a genuine experience of welcome, belonging, and community life.
Sophia House | Berkeley, California
The mission of Sophia House is to reach out to women and young adults in the greater San Francisco Bay area. The community places an emphasis on simplicity of life, care for the environment, contemplation and community life. Currently, six Religious of the Sacred Heart live in the community.
Sophia House hosts a variety of outreach activities throughout the year including a monthly “Prayer and Potluck,” an evening of prayer and fellowship for women in the area. The Jesuit Volunteers from both Berkeley and San Francisco join RSCJ for dinner on a few occasions throughout the school year. The community also hosts a group of Catholic sisters who live in the surrounding area. This past year, a group of 20 women religious from multiple congregations and nationalities participated in gatherings. Holidays and gardening days afford Sophia House a unique opportunity to host students.
Spiritual Ministry Centers
Religious of the Sacred Heart see the spiritual accompaniment of young people and adults as an essential means to live the Society’s mission. The Spiritual Ministry Centers offer different ways to realize mission through the portal of Spirituality.
Barat Spirituality Centre | Halifax, Nova Scotia
Barat Spirituality Centre, founded in 2015, is a six-bedroom centre in the heart of Halifax. Three RSCJ live upstairs in the centre and are involved with different aspects of the ministry offered. Seekers may spend the day or overnight in retreat, others may pursue spiritual accompaniment, and many avail themselves of programs on a wide variety of spiritual topics. The centre also regularly collaborates with the Sacred Heart School of Halifax, the Roman Catholic archdiocese, the Anglican diocese, the United Church of Canada, the Baptists, and the Atlantic School of Theology.
In FY25, the centre accommodated at least one guest over 145 nights, and more than 100 people participated in on-site programs. The centre was the host site for the Busy Persons Retreat for the Sacred Heart School of Halifax as well as for days of retreat for students in grades six, nine, and twelve. Eight people visited at least once for personal days of retreat. Calligraphy Halifax (CH) used the centre as its demonstration site during Nocturne, an annual city-wide evening celebration of the Arts. Over 120 people visited that evening. As a thank you, CH created art for the centre that is now one of the first things visitors see. FY25 also brought the RSCJ governance teams of the United States – Canada, Mexico and Antilles Provinces to the centre for meetings and community building. The centre maintains an email list of over 320 subscribers and continues to work closely with multiple denominations and organizations in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
EncounterPoint | Chicago, Illinois
EncounterPoint is an RSCJ ministry located in the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago. In the past year, it has continued its service to visiting RSCJ and members of the Network of Sacred Hearts Schools, as well as to the faith community of Edgewater and various other groups.
At the heart of EncounterPoint is a vibrant community of women and men who meet on a regular basis for conversation, prayer, liturgy, and celebration. Many of these people speak of EncounterPoint as a spiritual home.
It is also a place of radical hospitality that offers space to intentional groups. These groups include RSCJ, parish councils of many denominations, groups of men and women who gather for prayer and reflection, campus ministry teams, groups of educators and students.
The planning and development of EncounterPoint continues to be led by a team of eight men and women, two of whom are RSCJ. This team meets monthly to plan prayer and programs and to consider the needs, ideas and suggestions from those who have found it to be a place of welcome and spiritual support. During 2025, EncounterPoint offered a series of focused dinner conversations about topics that support the spiritual lives of those who participate. In FY25, EncounterPoint hosted RSCJ visitors for 104 nights, held 40 liturgies, prayer services (in person and online) and programs, and welcomed 30 groups and a small number of individual retreatants.
Spiritual Ministry Centers
Sophie’s Well: A Center for Sacred Heart Spirituality
Sophie’s Well is a collaborative center for spirituality programs, staffed by a core team of three RSCJ. The core team is responsible for the main work of providing materials for and organizing retreats, as well as the individual work of spiritual direction and retreat direction. Sophie’s Well includes a collaborative group of about 40 spiritual directors – RSCJ, former RSCJ and Associates to help those in the Sacred Heart community encounter God and deepen their own spirituality.
The primary work of Sophie’s Well today is providing Busy Persons Retreats (BPRs) to the Network of Sacred Heart Schools and the Society of the Sacred Heart provincial staff. These are week-long retreats, integrated into the flow of school or work, which involve daily prayer and meetings with a spiritual companion.
In FY25, 26 RSCJ along with five other trained spiritual directors from the Sacred Heart family participated in this ministry as spiritual directors. Sophie’s Well offered 24 BPRs, primarily in schools, but also for members of the USC Province staff, the staff at Oakwood, and for the Associates of the Sacred Heart. The number of participants has increased each year, with 343 retreat participants making a BPR in FY25. Sophie’s Well also offered days of prayer at two schools and sponsored a week-long hiking retreat in San Diego hosted at the Spiritual Ministry Center.
The Spiritual Ministry Center | San Diego, California
The Spiritual Ministry Center (SMC), founded in 1987 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart, offers quiet, personal space for individual retreats and ongoing spiritual direction to those seeking God’s word in their lives. The charism of the Society of the Sacred Heart “to discover and make known the love of the Heart of Jesus today” calls us to participate in the rebuilding of a more just and peaceful world and encourages us to welcome people of diverse faiths and cultures who seek to deepen their relationship with God and others. The center periodically holds dayprograms to facilitate personal integration in light of Gospel values.
In FY25, SMC provided 54 individual retreats, 334 retreat nights and 194 spiritual direction sessions, not including those that were part of retreats. The center hosted Border Coalition (a group of ministries ministering to those in their journey for new life), the Wisdom Circle (a support group of spiritual directors and administrative teams from parishes), the annual Sophie’s Well hiking retreat, a five-month series of meetings of graduates of the University of San Diego (USD) Leadership Program, and welcomed the ANAM Provincial Teams. Additionally, Nicolas Estrada from USD offered an Advent reflection morning and Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, offered a Lenten Reflection. This ministry continues to be very blessed by God’s grace and peace.

SacredHeartDNA
SacredHeartDNA (SHDNA) is the leading young adult ministry program of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States–Canada Province. Young adults collaborate with Religious of the Sacred Heart to organize and lead programs and create resources rooted in the Society’s mission for young people ages 18–35.
Throughout FY25, SHDNA continued to expand its reach and deepen its impact. The year began with the launch of an interactive Advent calendar, offering daily reflections and practices that invited the community into prayerful preparation. This was followed by a similar Lenten calendar, which provided resources to guide young adults through the season of renewal and solidarity.
In March 2025, SHDNA joined the global conversation on justice and equality by collaborating with the United Nations during the 69th Commission on the Status of Women in New York. This participation underscored SHDNA’s commitment to advancing gender equality and amplifying the voices of young adults within one of the largest international forums for women’s empowerment.
SHDNA established two new small group communities: one in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and another at Manhattanville University in New York. These two communities are becoming spaces of belonging where young adults can share faith, develop leadership, and grow in the Sacred Heart mission.
The highlight of the last year was participating in the Jubilee of Youth in Rome. Preparation meetings held monthly from January to June built anticipation and connection across borders and culminated in a gathering in Rome in July and August. SHDNA brought together 53 participants from 11 countries, including young adults, educators, and RSCJ, for a celebration that deepened spirituality and renewed a shared sense of belonging and mission within the Society of the Sacred Heart.
Stuart Center for Mission |
WASHINGTON, DC
The Stuart Center for Mission is a sponsored ministry of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada (USC) Province. Stuart Center has engages in the work of social justice, education, empowerment, and partnership. It provides space, both virtually and physically, for groups to learn, plan, understand and create a culture of response.
In FY25 the conference center welcomed more than 1,290 guests. The center provided meeting space and overnight accommodations for several USC province committees as well as organizations such as Pax Christi USA, Catholic Mobilizing Network, International Mayan League, Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Washington, African Faith and Justice, Boston College, the University of Connecticut, and Georgetown University.
The Stuart Center’s program office launched the Pilgrimages of the Heart program, which featured two mission trips. One group went to León, Mexico, where they worked with Religious of the Sacred Heart leading a two-week educational mission. The second group went to work with the Oglala Lakota living on the Pine Ridge Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
The Stuart Center also began offering translation and interpretation services to Society of the Sacred Heart staff, committees, and groups, as well as Society partners in mission. This service, called the LanguageHub, not only provides language services, but it also provides basic training to those who wish to strengthen their interpretation skills and informational sessions for those who may wish to explore a future in interpretation.
Additionally, the Stuart Center for Mission’s Sacred Heart Transformative Learning Program offered programming in both the fall and the spring. Prior to the start of the program, the planning committee of the program met in Guadalajara, Mexico. Featuring learning modules based upon the methodology of popular education, these free, online, bilingual classes gave participants the opportunity to meet weekly with classmates from throughout the Americas.

The Novitiate
| CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
At this moment, the Society of the Sacred Heart has three novitiates in the world — one in Africa, one in North America and one in Asia. One of the English-speaking novitiates is located in Chicago; currently Novices of the Sacred Heart (NSCJ) from Europe and North America are received there.
In August 2024, Zsófia Trasy, NSCJ, and Eugenia Yasinska, NSCJ, returned to Chicago from their summer immersion experiences. Alba Romero, NSCJ, from the Province of Spain, joined the noviceship community in September. All three novices undertook study at Catholic Theological Union (CTU). While Zsófia and Eugenia continued to serve in their ministries of the previous year, Alba began to work at Bethany House, providing enrichment activities for Spanish-speaking children. A cellist, Alba also became an active participant in the music ministry at CTU. In October, the novices were fortunate to be able to attend the Sacred Heart Network Summit in Chicago.
From March through May, Eugenia went to New Orleans on her three-month ministry experience. There she volunteered at Academy of the Sacred Heart (the Rosary) and at a medical clinic where she translated for doctors serving Hispanic patients. At the beginning of the summer, Eugenia and Zsófia returned to their home provinces. Alba was invited to Mexico to participate in a pilgrimage for young women. Later in the summer, she too returned to Spain to attend the province Chapter.
At the beginning of FY26, Alba was joined by Gwen Malisani, NSCJ, from the United States – Canada Province.
Conference of Sacred Heart Education
The Conference of Sacred Heart Education serves on behalf of the Provincial Team of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada (USC) Province, to strengthen the vitality and integrity of mission across the 25 Sacred Heart schools in the United States and Canada.
Now comprising ten members, the Conference welcomed two new members in FY25, both of whom have expertise in finance and governance. It remains a key partner with the Provincial Team and Sacred Heart school leaders to help safeguard and advance the Sacred Heart mission.
The Conference established distinct task groups to address two major priorities this past year: the development of a five-year strategic plan and a comprehensive review of the articles and bylaws of each of the 25 schools. The resulting strategic plan, Invigorating Mission for the Future, closely aligns with the Network of Sacred Heart Schools’ Vision 2030 strategic plan. The goal is to strengthen Sacred Heart education in a rapidly changing context. The Conference has also deepened its collaboration with the Network through a focused review of the structure and agenda as the two major entities serving Network schools.
Highlights from FY25:
• The creation of Invigorating Mission, 2026 Conference of Sacred Heart Education Strategic Plan.
• Annual Education to Mission Trustee Conference in October 2024, and a pre-conference welcoming Chairs of Board Governance Committees. Conference presenters focused on Evolving Board Structures from ISACS (Independent Schools Association of the Central States), and the fiduciary responsibilities of the Board.
• Training the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals (SHCOG) Steering Committees at five Network schools entering year one of the SHCOG process; forming visiting teams for five schools hosting visits as they begin year two of the SHCOG process; updated and revised the SHCOG manual.
• Hosting monthly online “meet-ups” with current board chairs from across the Network.
• One-on-one work with 10 Network school boards and three head of school search committees.
• Ongoing collaboration with the executive director of the Network of Sacred Schools in the planning of annual meetings and the Roots that Give Us Wings Conference.

Preserving and Sharing the Society’s History
United States – Canada Province Archives | St. Louis, Missouri
The archives are the official repository of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada Province as well as the former provinces of the United States and Canada, and the Province of the Antilles (Cuba, Haiti, and Puerto Rico). Michael Pera serves as provincial archivist and Mary Charlotte Chandler, RSCJ, is assistant archivist.
In FY25 the staff continued their work of preserving and making known the history of the Society in the United States and Canada. They fielded over 200 research requests from individual genealogical researchers, Network of Sacred Heart School communities, RSCJ communities, and province staff. Collection and accession of archival material increased this year, and the staff completed several key projects.
Julie Siderfin, who began volunteering in January 2024, completed the reconciliation of the Canadian Card File with the archives personnel database. This has greatly simplified the archives’ ability to handle research requests. Julie has been an invaluable part of the team, and she concluded her time at the archives in summer 2025.
The staff completed the rebalancing of their physical collection, a process during which virtually every container in the archives was moved. This improved organization and created space for anticipated growth as we move toward the ANAM Province.
Sister Chandler completed a wonderful display for the Centenary of Saint Madeleine Sophie’s canonization, with both a physical exhibit in the archives and a digital collection available on rscj.org. She also compiled a history of the ANAM group meeting in anticipation of the new province and worked with the province communications office to make that available on rscj.org
The archives accept a steady stream of material from Society members and ministries throughout the year, and this past year had several major accessions. In April, they received six boxes of books as part of ongoing work at the Provincial Office. The archives sends out books and other materials to other Society provinces across the world on a regular basis.
In July, eight boxes of financial records from Canada arrived, including important records on properties and major ministries of the Canadian province. They also received five boxes of material from the Stuart Center, including a large tranche of audio/visual material and art pieces.
The archives welcomed many notable visitors throughout FY25.
Gwyneth Thompson-Briggs, St. Louis artist, visited to reference the habit for a portrait of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne. This spurred a re-appraisal and improved description of the province’s habit collection. The archives also anticipate collecting the bulk of the habit material currently at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles in the coming year.
Multiple academic researchers stopped in, including visitors from Northwestern University, St. Louis University, Mid-America Nazarene University, Sam Houston State University, and Queen’s University Belfast.
Hilly Dunn and Edward Dunn, grandchildren of Hildreth Meière, Manhattanville alumna and mosaic artist, visited to review our collections on Meière. The archives staff completed the digitization of a film Hilly had deposited in the archives of her grandmother’s visits to Sacred Heart convents in South America.
The Archives is part of the St. Louis Catholic Archives Collective (SCAC), and contributed to three online exhibits this year, Sisters as City Builders; Segregation, Desegregation and Global Catholicism in St. Louis; and Tracing Global Lives: Catholic Missionary Sisters and the Making of St. Louis. This organization has helped make the archives collections visible to researchers, and several beneficiaries of the SCAC grants have conducted research in the archives.
Sister Chandler was able to attend the History of Women Religious Conference in South Bend, Indiana, and both she and Michael continued to participate in organizations such as the Society of American Archivists, Midwest Archives Conference, and the Association of St. Louis Area Archives.
The Archives continues to be a hub for the Society in St. Louis, serving as a host site for St. Louis Associates monthly meetings, as well as welcoming Children of Mary and City House alumnae for visits and masses. This past summer, during the Associate gathering preceding the Assembly, the archives welcomed attendees from across North America. They also received Network school groups, including students from Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr and Villa Duchesne.
The archives continues to support ongoing work by the Provincial Publications Committee, particularly research for forthcoming books as well as the Network of Sacred Heart Schools and individual schools.
Preserving and Sharing the Society’s History
The Shrine of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne | St. Charles, Missouri
The Shrine of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne is located in St. Charles, Missouri on the grounds where Philippine Duchesne and four other Religious of the Sacred Heart, started the first free school west of the Mississippi in 1818. The Shrine is the chapel built in 1951 and dedicated to Saint (then Blessed) Rose Philippine Duchesne.
While visiting the Shrine, pilgrims learn about the life of Philippine, view relics and items she used during her life, and pray in the sacred spaces near her sarcophagus. During a guided tour, pilgrims spend time in the 1835 convent/school building which houses artifacts belonging to Philippine, items that were brought or sent from France, and many objects used by the RSCJ and students who attended the Academy. A highlight of the tour is observing and praying at the small cell where Philippine Duchesne lived and died.
In FY25, the Shrine received over 2,350 visitors from across 30 U.S. states and five countries. Hosting members of the Sacred Heart family from around the world and throughout the Network of Sacred Heart Schools is always a highlight, an expression of the Society of the Sacred Heart’s internationality,
The year began with the Shrine hosting the opening prayer service for the Network of Sacred Heart Schools’ 50th Anniversary. The prayer service was live streamed to all the Network schools in the United States and Canada. The Shrine was fortunate to welcome and share its spaces with all the Network heads of schools and board members during their annual fall meeting. Students and faculty members from Villa Duchesne in St. Louis, Academy of the Sacred Heart in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana made special trips to the Shrine to learn more about the foundation of the Society in America.
The “Roots that Give Us Wings” Conference held every summer is a meaningful experience and a time for new faculty members from Network schools to focus on the history, mission, and spirituality of Sacred Heart education.
While in St. Louis, the participants had time to explore the Shrine grounds before partaking in a commissioning ceremony in the Shrine sanctuary.
The Associates held an international gathering that occurred in St. Louis. As part of their time together, they shared a special Mass in the Shrine, along with a tour, and shared a meal together. During the Provincial Assembly, RSCJ from Mexico and Puerto Rico had a chance to spend time in the historic spaces at the Academy.
The students, faculty and staff from Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles regularly use the Shrine for Eucharistic Adoration, First Friday Mass, Merit Assembly, the Rosary, prayer services, faculty morning prayer, First Communion, Prize Day and graduation. It is a privilege to share the Shrine’s sacred spaces with members of the Sacred Heart family, especially alumnae/i, current students, and families from Sacred Heart Schools from around the world.
During FY25, many other groups made this year especially meaningful. A parish pilgrimage from Illinois traveled with their pastor to have Mass said in Polish at the Shrine. Two Shrine regulars, Marie and Joe, got engaged near Philippine’s sarcophagus. Several neighboring schools held retreats and took tours of the Shrine. One Confirmation candidate was so moved by his tour that he asked to receive the sacrament of reconciliation from a priest who was visiting at the same time.
It is an honor to be a pilgrimage site for families, friends, scout groups, homeschool groups, prayer groups, class field trips, Confirmation candidates and their sponsors, OCIA groups, seminarians, and members of religious congregations from all around the world.
Preserving and Sharing the Society’s History
Le Petit Musée & the Shrine of Saint John Berchmans | Grand Coteau, Louisiana
Le Petit Musée is a museum dedicated to the Society of the Sacred Heart’s history in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Museum patrons learn about the 1821 founding of the school and early life at the convent for the religious, the students, and the enslaved people there. Also included on the tour is the RSCJ cemetery and the 1834 enslaved quarters. The Shrine of Saint John Berchmans, originally the convent infirmary, was converted to a chapel following the 1866 miraculous cure of a Religious of the Sacred Heart and has remained a place for espacio, prayer, and pilgrimage. Both are located on the campus of Schools of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau. Caroline Richard serves as the director of the museum and the shrine.
In FY25, the two spaces received over 1,600 visitors from around the world. Some of these included area school groups, church and youth groups, and a number of retreatants visiting from the newly expanded Jesuit retreat center in Grand Coteau. Many other visitors are familiar to the Sacred Heart family and included alumnae and alumni, students and faculty from Network schools, descendants of those enslaved by the Society, and current students, faculty, and families. Network visitors from New Orleans, Omaha, St. Louis, and Houston, and international Sacred Heart visitors from Madrid, Rome, and Melbourne made their way to Grand Coteau this past year. The shrine is also the home for monthly rosaries for parents and grandparents of students, a Lenten retreat for alumnae/i and friends, and a day of adoration on the anniversary of the miracle in December.
we are grateful to the Cor Unum Legacy Society
A bequest can make an impact for decades to come.
After you have provided for your family members, please consider joining alumnae/-I, Associates, family and friends like the Cor Unum Legacy Society members listed below to help secure the future of the Society of the Sacred Heart.
One way that bequests support the needs of the Religious is by increasing the endowment fund for elder care. In this fund, a percentage of earnings are allocated for current retirement needs while the principal grows to care for younger sisters when they retire. The RSCJ also appreciate bequests designated as unrestricted so funds can be used where most needed at the time they are received.
Your bequest is a generous gift of love that will help ensure the sisters are financially secure in the decades ahead. Please know the RSCJ remember you and those you love in prayers of gratitude each day.
For the Cor Unum Legacy Society members who are listed below –generations to come will benefit from your thoughtful and forward-thinking gifts. Thank you very much.

Retirement Communities
Avila Retirement Community | Albany, New York
Religious of the Sacred Heart who live at the Avila retirement community share life with over 200 other residents. It is a place for outreach, companioning, and witnessing to the Society’s mission.
In FY25, the Avila community welcomed several visitors. In September 2024 Kathy Conan, RSCJ, shared her experiences in the Society’s international novitiate in Manila. In December Maria Cimperman, RSCJ, presented on the Synod and Synodality to the RSCJ and other Avila residents. Suzanne Cooke, RSCJ, and Paula Gruner, RSCJ, also visited.
Two community members, Peggy McDonnell, RSCJ, and Mary Louise Wolfington, RSCJ, moved across the campus to Teresian House. While they are missed, the RSCJ at the Avila community still visit them. The community welcomed Agnes Cimbayo, RSCJ, for a visit before she became a resident member in January 2025. Lolin Menendez, RSCJ, joined the community the same month and Rosemarie Quilter, RSCJ, returned to the community after some months in Texas.
Carmel Terrace Community | Framingham, Massachusetts
There are currently four Religious of the Sacred Heart residing at Carmel Terrace, an independent living community in Framingham, Massachusetts. In the past year, two of the community moved to Teresian House in Albany, New York.
The four RSCJ view their ministry as both internal and external. Most importantly, they see their ministry as one of presence. Among their “internal” ministries are visiting with fellow residents at Carmel Terrace, listening, volunteering in the giftshop, serving as Eucharistic ministers and lectors, and reading to people who are visionimpaired.
Externally, some RSCJ serve schools in the Network as mentors and board members. Others minister as spiritual directors for lay people and other religious and as retreat directors at retreat houses and for Busy Persons Retreats offered by Sophie’s Well .
The Carmel Terrace community is grateful that they have the facility to welcome visitors regularly, and also to welcome RSCJ who have rehabilitation needs. They continue to host the RSCJ in the Boston area periodically for Mass and meals. They continue to see their Carmel Terrace community as being ministers of presence, available to respond as needed to those around them and beyond.
Marie Buonato, RSCJ, turned 90 and celebrated with her community and her family in Philadelphia. The alumnae/i of Sacred Heart Schools Chicago (Sheridan Road) awarded her the Catherine Sieker award for her outstanding contribution to the school.
On Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat’s Feast, the sisters attended Mass at St. Madeleine Sophie Church. This year first grade students from the parish school joined the sisters for a snack afterward.
The RSCJ at Avila foster interfaith and ecumenical initiatives with their fellow residents. They partook in an ecumenical Way of the Cross in Lent. Meg Canty, RSCJ, with Father Leo O’Brien facilitated an ecumenical prayer service during the Church Unity Octave, which 60 Avila residents attended. Meg also spoke at Doane Stuart’s 50th anniversary celebration.
Five RSCJ from the community attended the Province Assembly in July 2025 and Sister Quilter attended the Associates gathering that preceded the Assembly.
Retirement Communities
Oakwood Retirement Community | Atherton, California
On the grounds of Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton, California, Oakwood is a residence for a community of about 40 elderly and infirm Religious of the Sacred Heart. It is staffed by a director, a community life director, a pastoral care staff including chaplains, and a corps of certified nurse assistants as well as maintenance and kitchen personnel.
A well-planned program of health care and religious, entertainment, and intellectual activities supports the life of the residents. There is daily Mass, an annual preached retreat, and prayer services. Almost every day there is planned exercise. Frequently lectures by outside experts are available on health-related topics, Scripture and current events. There is also a weekly art class and one of the nursing staff offers elementary Spanish lessons. There are regular outings to museums in San Francisco and other places of interest, including restaurants. Residents enjoy hosting visitors, RSCJ, and other friends and relatives.
Several of the religious living at Oakwood continue in ministries as spiritual accompaniers, Busy Persons Retreat team members, and school trustees; others do research and editorial work for the province.
Because Oakwood is on the grounds of the school, many student activities are open to the residents. Students come to perform musically or to share what they are learning. A concert by the kindergarten was a highlight this past year. The religious are often invited to school drama and sports events, and all turn out for the graduation procession. A special program for the school’s senior class pairs a student with a religious with whom he or she meets weekly.
Finally, an important part of the sisters’ ministry at Oakwood is to accompany their sisters on their last journey.
Retirement Communities
The Sarah Community | St. Louis, Missouri
The Sarah Community is home to five Religious of the Sacred Heart in independent living apartments. The sisters enjoy sharing the gift of living where Philippine lived with all who visit.
In FY25, the community welcomed a number of visitors, including RSCJ living in St. Louis, who visit regularly. Notably, three RSCJ from the United States who have been in ministry in Korea, Japan, and the Philippines visited during the Province Assembly in July 2025. They shared meals with the community as well as stories of what the movement to new provinces looks like around the Society and the diverse ways sisters live one charism.
Former community members Margaret Caire, RSCJ, and Margaret Munch, RSCJ, moved to Oakwood this past year. Though they are missed, more non-RSCJ residents, women religious from other congregations, and individuals and couples continue to move to The Sarah Community, bringing the RSCJ a wider sense of how God works in people from various walks of life.
The RSCJ at The Sarah Community continue to engage with the local Associates groups through planning meetings, Zoom calls, and Mass celebrations on Society feast days. They serve The Sarah Community Laudato Sí committee, as lectors and as Eucharistic Ministers. The sisters also bring the needs of friends, family, and the world to their twice weekly group prayer and share spiritual support with all residents.
Teresian House | Albany, New York
The Teresian House retirement community has 16 Religious of the Sacred Heart residents. RSCJ in the community enjoy a variety of activities including art, book-sharing, games, exercise, and liturgical gatherings. There is also the option for Mass or a Communion service in the chapel.
Sisters meet weekly in an area called “the Book Nook” where they discuss different topics, mainly history, current events, and the Society Chapters. They also organize times of prayer and reflection.
Two RSCJ from the Teresian House Community died last year. The Masses of Christian Burial were celebrated at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Parish in honor of each, and burials took place at Kenwood cemetery, which the Society has retained.
The RSCJ at Teresian House enjoy visitors who come to the Albany area throughout the year. Visitors are typically invited to share with the sisters their stories, where they come from, and their experiences of mission and ministry.
There are also moments of celebration, such as sisters’ birthdays, during which the Avila Community is invited to
