2024 ANNUAL REPORT
SOCIETY OF THE SACRED HEART, UNITED STATES — CANADA
Dear Donors and Friends,
As I reflect on the many gifts we received in fiscal year 2024, I am filled with gratitude. Many of you increased the amount and/or frequency of your gifts in support of province ministries and care for our elderly sisters. Thank you.
The ministries and initiatives shared in this report would not be possible without your partnership. Through your gifts, Religious of the Sacred Heart have been able to offer transformative experiences and spiritual accompaniment to young people through the SacredHeartDNA initiative and our welcoming communities like the Heart of Oak community in Boston. They have been able to welcome retreatants and those seeking spiritual direction, both in-person and virtually, through the work of our spirituality centers. These are just a few of the ways your generosity is touching lives and advancing our mission.
Today, the average age of RSCJ is 81. While many remain active in a variety of ways, many require urgent financial, medical and personal assistance. The Giving Fund supplements the 2-million-dollar shortfall between RSCJ revenue streams and eldercare costs. A special thank you to those of you who have supported this annual effort. Going forward, The Giving Fund aims to close this gap as well as build a reserve to help support RSCJ who will retire in the future. Their lifelong service has touched countless hearts, and now, they need our support more than ever to remain active in their ministry of accompaniment.
The Cor Unum Legacy Society is for those who wish to make a gift from their estate to the RSCJ. Leaving a lasting gift through your will, trust, or stock options, allows you to continue to support the RSCJ and their mission and ministries. The bequests this year represent a most generous means of securing the future of the Society’s mission.

I invite you to continue to walk with us to ensure the future vitality of the Society and I hope we can count on your support again this year. Whether through our collaboration with mission partners or the individual ministries of the RSCJ — we continue to make known God’s love in communities, near and far. This is made possible by your unwavering support and belief in our mission.
On behalf of the Religious of the Sacred Heart, province staff, and all those whose lives you impact, thank you for being an essential part of our community. Your generosity is a true blessing.
With deepest gratitude,
Anne

Society
From the very start, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat called Religious of the Sacred Heart to respond to the urgent needs of God’s people by demonstrating a contemplative sensitivity and regard for the human dignity of each person through the service of education. Today, in accordance with the Society of the Sacred Heart Constitutions, and the call to discover and reveal God’s love, RSCJ choose to express this mission through a set of four global Apostolic Priorities in response to the needs of the world.
As we seek ways to revitalize our mission in the world today, to reorganize ourselves to foster collaboration, coordination, and communication for greater impact both locally and globally, we recognize that there are four core components — four portals leading us to the same end: Education, Spirituality, JPIC (Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation) and Formation. These are not arbitrarily named components. Careful reflection indicates that these core elements are different facets of the same reality: they illuminate all our service in the Church.
Education is inherent to the process of humanization and, therefore, is at the heart of our mission to discover and reveal the love of the Heart of Jesus. Education is the process of seeking truth and understanding humanity. Generating learning through experience, encouragement, and mutual discovery, we engage all the members of the community in processes that are inherently relational, dynamic, dialogic and reciprocal. Integral formation encourages the virtues and habits essential to live a fully human life. It includes any process through which learnings are exchanged; experiences are shared; skills, knowledge and attitudes are developed, imparted, acquired — all within the contexts of formal education, popular education, and socio-educational projects. We carry out our work of education across all generations — children, youth and adults.
“Adapted to the capabilities of each one and directed towards responding to the challenges of the world, formation envisages the development of our spiritual, human and apostolic life.” (Society of the Sacred Heart Constitutions, §72). It is essential that we work together in training ourselves and our mission partners to know and understand the charism of Madeleine Sophie Barat, the spirit of the Society, the contemplative dimension of our educational philosophy and our view that education is transformative. Our hope is to foster spiritual, human growth and apostolic life at every level — in the context of initial and ongoing formation of RSCJ, formation with our lay partners in mission, for the transmission and sustainability of our charism, for leadership and processes of change and transformation.
In the face of the urgent needs in our world, this focus of passion, hope, and energy impels us to act on our desire to become better informed and educated about the interrelationships among the local, regional, national, and international levels so that we may work more effectively toward structural and systemic change. We search for ways to respond to the four imperatives of our time: dealing with relationships of power; working for transformation and willingness to be transformed; caring for our common home; and welcoming those who seek refuge and hope for a better future. Our steadfast commitment to our world in need of justice, peace, and the integrity of creation, beckons us towards transformative engagement and action, especially in situations of vulnerability.
Our spirituality impels us toward transformation through contemplation of the pierced Heart of Jesus in the fractures and potentiality of our world. The deepening of interiority and the core encounter with Jesus that sensitizes us to his presence in ourselves, in others, in our world — through the contemplative dimension of our life as well as through accompaniment of retreats, spiritual direction, pastoral work, and evangelization. At the same time, we strive to open spaces, in our widely diverse contexts, within which our lay sisters and brothers, our partners in mission, can explore, develop and express their spirituality. This allows us to listen to one another more deeply and to listen for the voice of God speaking through each one.
On Friday, August 30, 2024, the International Society of the Sacred Heart announced the nomination of the new Society of the Sacred Heart General Council who will serve with Superior General Claire Castaing, RSCJ, for an eight-year term.
The new General Council is:
Ananda Amritmahal, RSCJ, of the Province of India
“To be entrusted with the role of General Councillor is for me an experience of grace. It is an experience of being chosen and feeling challenged to be and do more than I dreamed possible in living God’s mission to love.”
Noellina Namusisi, RSCJ, of the Uganda – Kenya Province Francisca (Paqui) Rodríguez, RSCJ, of the Province of Spain
Sheila Smith, RSCJ, of the United States – Canada Province
I have been blessed to be living and ministering in the Society of the Sacred Heart’s District of Indonesia. I moved from Jakarta in the fall of 2023, to my current community located in Baleendah in the Diocese of Bandung. We are a vibrant community of nine, seven of whom are in their 20s.
In addition to being a member of the Society’s District of Indonesia (INS) leadership team, I teach English and a Society of the Sacred Heart class to the postulants as well as a high school math class in a school adjacent to our community. An engaging aspect of my work has been as the INS District’s representative on the transition team of the new province of SE-SASIA (Southeast and South Asia).
Among the many reasons I feel so blessed is that the Indonesian culture is beautifully welcoming and amazingly respectful. The culture is quite compatible for one who is dedicated to a contemplative life. The interior life is highly valued among Indonesians. God is present in the daily routines and in the cultural consciousness of the people. Specific to the RSCJ communities, the prayerful atmosphere is powerfully palpable, and the ministerial earnestness is inspiring.
While I am overflowing with gratitude for all the blessings I have experienced in Indonesia, I have been asked to return to the USC Province in June of 2025. So, with joy and openness to Spirit, I also look forward to the blessings that are yet to be.
For the last two years Lisa Buscher, RSCJ, has worked in various ministries in service to people on the move. She is the chair of the Collaborative for Border Ministries, a network of faith-based organizations addressing the immediate crisis in the Southern California border region by providing direct services and a Gospel presence to people on the move. In her role she convenes a network of nine congregations of Catholic women religious that organizes ten ministries of direct service at the United States southern border.
Sister Buscher also partners with Border Compassion, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She is the crossover engagement animator. FY24 was her second year partnering with Border Compassion. From fall of 2023 through summer of 2024, Border Compassion took 384 volunteers to a shelter in Mexicali, Mexico. Twentyseven faith communities offered 36 days of service, and 1,836 adults and 808 children received food, medicine, clothing and toiletries provided by Border Compassion and volunteers.

While I serve on the faculty at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, my ministry in Rome again this last year has been very much connected with the Catholic Church’s renewal process through the Synod on Synodality — and the subsequent call to renewal in religious life.
As this entire Synod process is about both conversion of heart and structural reform, I find our Sacred Heart charism and mission very interconnected. Our founder, Madeleine Sophie Barat, knew the importance of listening to the Spirit, and she was actively engaged in the evolving life and ministries of her sisters. So it is for us.
The international context I work in allows me to engage the beautiful diversity of our Church. It has been a profound, challenging, and beautiful experience to participate in a discernment process for a Church that includes 1.3 billion members! The 365 representatives at our tables — I served as a theologian facilitator during this process — encompassed the globe and included students, single and married persons, priests, religious men and women, bishops, and cardinals. It was an experience of unity amid diversity, engaging questions of participation, mission, and communion. I encountered the wounded heart of humanity, mentioned in the Society Constitutions, in our global body and saw the importance of creating spaces for healing and reconciliation, becoming communities of welcome from all over, and practicing dialogue and communal discernment. The call is for all of us, and particularly the Sacred Heart family, to walk this together so that all may discover God’s love and manifest it.

Welcoming Communities are intentional communities that offer a variety of programs, gatherings, retreats, volunteer opportunities and accommodation options for young adults committed to social justice and spiritual growth. There are four welcoming communities run by Religious of the Sacred Heart located in the Province.
Anne Montgomery House is an intentional community that provides a one-year experience of community living for young women interested in spirituality and justice. The house is named for Anne Montgomery, RSCJ, a dedicated peacemaker. The house also serves as a meeting place for a larger group of young adults seeking to integrate spirituality and justice. Community members find joy in the inter-congregational, inter-generational, inter-faith and international community life offered at Anne Montgomery House.
During FY24, the Anne Montgomery House welcomed 13 overnight guests, several of whom were social activists in town for a vigil or a hearing on Capitol Hill. Guests, including former community members, came from as far away as Brazil and France. The community also helped plan and attended Taizé prayer and potluck gatherings at the Stuart Center during Advent and Lent and hosted members of the SacredHeartDNA core team who attended the Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice.
The Heart of Oak Community is home to two Religious of the Sacred Heart. The community’s monthly gatherings for young adults entered its sixth year in FY24. The RSCJ partner with two Sisters of St. Joseph to plan and host these evenings, which include prayer, dinner, and sharing, alternating locations between the Heart of Oak community and the CSJ community each month. This partnership values collaboration with partners who share in Society priorities.
Young adults in the Boston area are welcomed to contribute to these meals and to offer suggestions of topics they would like to discuss at the gatherings. The young adults, including some from a Muslim community, add an interreligious and ecumenical nature to the evenings. This diversity invites all to ground their reflections in a wider world. Barbara Quinn, RSCJ, remarked that each year the quality of sharing grows deeper and more transparent.
The Rebecca House Community welcomes young adults seeking an experience of community, reflection and social action. Most guests at Rebecca House are international visitors who come with a desire to have an experience of service, to work for a nonprofit organization, or to support a province initiative such as SacredHeartDNA, a young adult and vocation ministry initiative. As a welcoming community, Rebecca House also provides hospitality to several Religious of the Sacred Heart from both within the province and abroad who visit the area to attend meetings or events. Visitors participate in community prayer, fun activities, and outings to have a true experience of welcome and community.
In FY24, this community of two Religious of the Sacred Heart hosted several volunteers from Mexico and helped connect them with local organizations and groups whose work aligns with Society priorities such as welcoming people on the move and partnering with young people.
The mission of Sophia House is to reach out to women and young adults in the greater San Francisco Bay area. The community places an emphasis on simplicity of life, care for the environment, contemplation and community life. Currently, six Religious of the Sacred Heart live in the community.
Sophia House hosts a variety of outreach activities throughout the year including a monthly “Prayer and Potluck,” an evening of prayer and fellowship for women in the area. The Jesuit Volunteers from both Berkeley and San Francisco join RSCJ for dinner on a few occasions throughout the school year. The community also hosts a group of Catholic sisters who live in the surrounding area. This past year, a group of 20 women religious from multiple congregations and nationalities participated in gatherings. Holidays and gardening days afford Sophia House a unique opportunity to host students.
Religious of the Sacred Heart see the spiritual accompaniment of young people and adults as an essential means to live the Society’s mission. The Spiritual Ministry Centers offer different ways to realize mission through the portal of Spirituality.
Barat Spirituality Centre, founded in 2015, is a six-bedroom centre in the heart of Halifax. Three RSCJ live upstairs in the centre and are involved with different aspects of the ministry offered. Seekers may spend the day or overnight in retreat, others may pursue spiritual accompaniment, and many avail themselves of programs on a wide variety of spiritual topics. The centre also regularly collaborates with the Sacred Heart School of Halifax, the Roman Catholic archdiocese, the Anglican diocese, the United Church of Canada, the Baptists, and the Atlantic School of Theology.
In FY24, there were over 130 nights in which the centre accommodated at least one guest. More than 100 people participated in on-site programs. The centre was the host site for the Busy Persons Retreat for the Sacred Heart School of Halifax as well as for days of retreat for grades 6, 9, and 12. Eight people visited at least once for a personal day of retreat for themselves. The centre also hosted a speaker/retreat from Wisdom Waypoints as well as the local branch of Art of Living. The centre maintains an email list of over 300 people who have opted in for regular communication about news and programming opportunities.
EncounterPoint is an RSCJ community located in the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago. In the past year, it has continued its service to visiting Religious of the Sacred Heart, the faith community of Edgewater and various other groups.
At the heart of EncounterPoint is a local community of women and men who meet on a regular basis for conversation, prayer, liturgy, and celebration. Many of these people speak of EncounterPoint as a spiritual home.
It is also a place of determined hospitality and offers gathering space to intentional groups. These groups include RSCJ, parish councils, groups of men and women, educators and students — people who meet to reflect, plan, pray or celebrate together.
The planning and development of EncounterPoint continues to be led by a team of eight men and women, two of whom are RSCJ. This team meets monthly to plan prayer and programs and to consider the needs, ideas, and requests from those who have found EncounterPoint to be a place of welcoming. In FY24, EncounterPoint hosted RSCJ visitors for 126 nights, held 40 liturgies, prayer services (both in person and online) and programs, and welcomed 38 groups and 5 individual retreatants.
Sophie’s Well is a collaborative center for spirituality programs, staffed by a core team of three RSCJ. The core team is responsible for the main work of providing materials for and organizing retreats, as well as the individual work of spiritual direction and retreat direction. Sophie’s Well includes a collaborative group of about 40 spiritual companions – RSCJ, former RSCJ and Associates to help those in the Sacred Heart community encounter God and deepen their own spirituality.
The primary work of Sophie’s Well today is providing Busy Persons Retreats to the Network of Sacred Heart Schools and the Society of the Sacred Heart provincial office. These are week-long retreats, integrated into the flow of school or work, which involve daily prayer and meetings with a spiritual companion.
In FY24, 27 RSCJ along with four other trained spiritual directors from the Sacred Heart family participated in this ministry as spiritual directors. Sophie’s Well offered 23 BPRs, primarily in schools, but also for members of the USC Province staff and the Associates of the Sacred Heart. Additionally, two BPRs were offered to the Sacred Heart School in Taiwan, in collaboration with the RSCJ community and staff there. The center also sponsored two hiking retreats, one in Nova Scotia and one in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The Spiritual Ministry Center, founded in 1987 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart, offers spiritual direction and individual retreats of various lengths. Seekers of all faiths are welcome to experience prayer, reflection and renewal set in a quiet residential neighborhood in Ocean Beach, California. The center is a short walk to the natural beauty of ocean cliffs.
The charism of the Society of the Sacred Heart, to discover and reveal the love of the Heart of Jesus, inspires the RSCJ in ministry at the center to participate in the rebuilding of a more just and peaceful world and welcome people of diverse faiths and cultures who seek to deepen their relationship with God and others.
The center periodically holds day programs to facilitate personal integration in the light of Gospel values. It also hosts various groups and parishes for a retreat day or weekend, various workshops, groups and classes. It is an ideal place for someone seeking a long retreat during a sabbatical year. In FY24 the center hosted 41 retreats

Associates of the Sacred Heart are women and men who commit to live out the spirituality of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Sarah Cassidy of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Angela LaGrange Scott of Houston, Texas, serve as co-chairs of the Associates Leadership Team. Currently, there are 14 active Associates groups throughout the province, two of which are completely virtual. There are 128 active Associates and 26 discerning their commitments. Associate groups meet monthly.
This past year, the Associates leadership focused on meeting with Associate co-coordinators, engaging in relationships, providing opportunities for Associates to be together, and listening to the needs of Associates. After a survey of Associates in fall 2023, three committees were formed to meet the organizational needs of Associates: Formation, Program, and Conference. The Formation Committee is charged with understanding current Associate formation needs and creating a resource to support initial and ongoing formation. The Program Committee coordinates province-wide Zoom meetings, prepares monthly updates for RSCJ and Associates, and organizes the Associates Busy Persons Retreat. The Conference Committee has been planning and coordinating an in-person meeting for all Associates scheduled for July 11-14, 2025.
“…we remain filled with hope, inspired by the radical call of the Gospel, and committed to discerning together the leading of God’s Spirit.”(LCWR Call, 2023-2028)
“We choose to emphasize in our lives and our service joining the struggle of the poor for the resources and conditions essential for human well-being, recognizing that education is central to this effort and to our vocation.”(Society of the Sacred Heart, Act of Hope, 1992)
These two threads of truth bind together the heart of my vocation, the pursuit of freedom for all of God’s people through education, advocacy, community and love. Called to the Society of the Sacred Heart to build bridges of relationship between and among people of difference, I found my way (or my way was revealed) to the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) by way of my vocation as an educator.
In my role as associate director for transformative justice, I work with a national team serving the 294 LCWR congregations of women religious in the United States. In this role, my vocation as a Religious of the Sacred Heart intersects with the LCWR’s work of deepening vocation through mutual commitment to the Gospel, making visible our understanding of justice as a constitutive element of religious life.
During this past year, LCWR members made a commitment to use our moral authority and collective voice to address the divisive rhetoric and polarization of relationships in family, community, governance, and faith. This work, Transforming Grace, provided weekly modules of learning and prayer, inviting people across constituencies to gather to create common ground and defy the labels and attitudes that separate the people of God. LCWR has chosen to set tables across boundaries and barriers, calling all to radical inclusion, and to increase our willingness to be uncomfortable, for the sake of the Kingdom.
Here, I have been called to live the wisdom I learned in the Society of the Sacred Heart:
“No matter what…we must
stay at the table.”– Rosemary Bearss, RSCJ (1931-2023)

SacredHeartDNA (SHDNA) is a young adult initiative of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada Province, through which young adults collaborate with Religious of the Sacred Heart, to organize and lead programs and create resources rooted in the Society’s mission for young people ages 17-35.
SHDNA hosted various events and built connections throughout FY24. The SHDNA core team, comprised of young adult leaders and RSCJ, developed interactive Advent and Lent calendars for the SHDNA community, and hosted an Advent retreat in La Barca, Jalisco, Mexico. Core team members from the United States and Mexico visited RSCJ communities and schools in Guadalajara and San Luis Potosí to share about SHDNA. In the summer, core team members from Poland led a small group to walk a portion of El Camino de Santiago in Spain. SHDNA also led a weeklong volunteer program in Puerto Rico, in collaboration with Universidad del Sagrado Corazón and RSCJ in Puerto Rico.
SHDNA collaborated with several RSCJ who delivered online presentations on discernment, solidarity, and spirituality. They strengthened ties with the Network of Sacred Heart Schools through participation in two Network summer service projects, and, notably, two SHDNA small group communities began meeting regularly, one in San Luis Potosí, and one in Washington, D.C.
The Stuart Center for Mission is a sponsored ministry of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada (USC) Province. For over 40 years the Stuart Center has engaged in the work of social justice, education, empowerment, and partnership. It provides space, both virtually and physically, for groups to learn, plan, understand and create a culture of response.
Last fiscal year, the conference center welcomed more than 1,290 guests. The center provided meeting space and overnight accommodations for several USC province committees as well as organizations such as Pax Christi USA, Catholic Mobilizing Network, International Mayan League, Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Washington, African Faith and Justice, Boston College, the University of Connecticut, and Georgetown University.
The center’s program office launched the Sacred Heart Transformative Learning Program. Featuring learning modules based upon the methodology of popular education, these free, online, bilingual classes gave participants the opportunity to meet weekly with classmates from throughout the Americas and Asia. In advance of the program’s launch, planning team members visited RSCJ communities in Mexico that model successful programs utilizing the popular education methodology. The second cohort of this program is planned for the winter of 2025.

At this moment, the Society of the Sacred Heart has three novitiates in the world — one in Africa, one in North America and one in Asia. The English-speaking novitiate is located in Chicago. Currently Novices of the Sacred Heart (NSCJ) from Europe are received there.
In FY24, the novitiate welcomed Eugenia Yasinska, NSCJ, from the Province of Spain and Zsófia Trásy, NSCJ, from the Central European (CEU) Province. As they adjusted to living in a new country and the novitiate way of life, they began studies at Catholic Theological Union in fall 2023. During their second semester, Eugenia volunteered at Sacred Heart Schools on Sheridan Road in Chicago, while Zsófia volunteered at Kolbe House Jail Ministry in Chicago. In the summer, Eugenia participated in the Network summer service project at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center in El Cajon, California, and visited the Oakwood retirement community. She also worked with preschool children at the Jesuit Summer School in San Diego. Zsófia attended the Network project at Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bellevue, Washington, then served in Albany, New York, at the Capital City Rescue Mission. While in New York she had the opportunity to attend a United Nations conference in New York City. After a rich summer experience, the novitiate welcomed Alba Romero, NSCJ, from the Province of Spain.
The Conference of Sacred Heart Education and its committees work on behalf of the Provincial Team of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada (USC) Province to ensure the vitality and integrity of mission within the 25 Sacred Heart schools in Canada and the United States. Comprised of eight members — educators and Religious of the Sacred Heart— the Conference functions as a think tank on mission, supporting the Provincial Team and school leaders to ensure mission integrity.
The Provincial and her team appoint the head of conference. Nat Wilburn currently serves as head of conference and facilitates the work of the Conference and its three committees — Education to Mission, Governance, and Sacred Heart Commission on Goals (SHCOG). The Conference and its committees support Sacred Heart educators — especially school leaders — in deepening their understanding and living of the Goals and Criteria.
Highlights from FY24:
• Annual Education to Mission Trustee Conference October 2023, including RSCJ Trustees
• SHCOG visiting five member schools of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools
• The Conference working with 10 Network school boards and two Head of School search committees
• On-going collaboration with the executive director of the Network of Sacred Schools in the planning of annual meetings and the “Roots that Give Us Wings” Conference
• Appointment of three new members to the Conference:
• Paul Parker, former chair of Sacred Heart Spirituality, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami
• Ann Marie Krejcarek, head of school at Convent & Stuart Hall Schools of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco
• Melanie Guste, RSCJ, director of JPIC for Society of the Sacred Heart, USC Province
My ministry as vice president for academic affairs at the Franciscan School of Theology (FST) in San Diego gives me opportunities to express the Sacred Heart charism daily. A theology of the goodness of the human person and a focus on building relationships form the core of the ministerial education we offer at FST — Franciscans have much in common with Religious of the Sacred Heart!
By educating lay and ordained ministers, FST shapes the future leadership of the Church, centering it on care for one another and for creation, synodality, and reaching out to the most vulnerable. In the three years since I started at FST, our student body has blossomed, increasing by nearly 50 percent. Not only does this affirm the need for a positive view of the human person in our church and world, but it also points to the need for graduate-level theological resources in southern California. Our location on the border allows us to seek out students from across the border, and we offer immersive education through cross-border courses. My hope for all students who come to FST is that they find themselves welcome and accepted as they are, and that they are challenged to grow more and more into the fullness of their unique humanity.
“Our conviction is that a transformative education responds to the urgency of life and that humanity unites us on a shared path. We see education as a dialogue and partnership with people, many of whom have different beliefs, and yet, all of whom draw from a universal system of values. We choose to participate in this globalized world affirming that it is conditioned by love.” – Philosophy of Sacred Heart Education: Sophie’s Gift... Our Call to the Future

The archives are the official repository of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada Province as well as the former provinces of the United States and Canada, and the Province of the Antilles (Cuba, Haiti, and Puerto Rico).
In FY24 the archives staff continued its work preserving and making known the history of the Society in the United States and Canada. They fielded over 160 research requests from individual genealogical researchers, Sacred Heart schools, RSCJ communities, and province staff. In addition, the staff handled numerous informational inquiries and continued to receive material from the provincial offices, Sacred Heart alumnae/i, individual RSCJ, Sacred Heart schools, and the Province of the Antilles.
In early 2024, the staff presented at Villa Duchesne School of the Sacred Heart in St. Louis in support of their “Jenkins Day” in honor of Mary Louise (Mamie) Jenkins, RSCJ. Throughout the year, they welcomed visiting teachers from the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, 7th grade students from Schools of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, the Villa Duchesne senior class, and novices from the international novitiate in Chicago. They hosted Mass for the Feast of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat and a group of Sacred Heart educators for a four-day workshop. The archives also served as a monthly meeting site for the St. Louis Associates.
Mary Charlotte Chandler, RSCJ, joined the archives staff in fall of 2023. Julie Siderfin, Associate and former archivist in St. Charles, joined the archives as a volunteer in January 2024. Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, who had served as provincial archivist since 2009, left the archives to begin work on special projects at the provincial office in the fall of 2024. Michael Pera, assistant archivist since 2007, now serves as provincial archivist.
The Shrine of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne is located on the grounds of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles. It is a lasting tribute to the French missionary Religious of the Sacred Heart who brought formalized education and a zeal for sharing the love of God to the Missouri frontier in 1818. Sandy Ahlheim is the director of the Shrine. Mary Glenn serves as shrine assistant.
In FY24, the Shrine hosted 136 tours to 2,182 tour participants, representing 31 states and four countries. Notably, it was a stop for the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage last summer. Over one thousand pilgrims participated in Eucharistic Adoration in the Shrine sanctuary. The Shrine staff also welcomed Sacred Heart educators who participated in the “Roots that Give us Wings” Conference last summer, as well as heads of school and board members, and Sacred Heart alumnae/i from around the world.
Several school groups visited throughout the year, including students from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and Schools of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Numerous Confirmation candidates, church groups, missionaries, seminarians, members of various religious orders, and Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski of Saint Louis visited. Shrine staff also gave tours to family groups, including members of the Duchesne and Perier families.
Le Petit Musée is a museum dedicated to the history of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. The Shrine of Saint John Berchmans sits on the site of the 1866 miraculous cure of a Religious of the Sacred Heart. Both are located on the campus of Schools of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau. Caroline Richard serves as director of the museum and the Shrine.
In FY24, the Shrine of Saint John Berchmans received visitors from a record number of Sacred Heart schools. The shrine also received local school groups, church youth groups, and pilgrims from around the world. The space, however, is most often used by the school community itself. The shrine holds espacio and prayer sessions for students and faculty, retreats, monthly rosaries for parents, and a special service on the anniversary of the miracle.
Le Petit Musée received over 1,100 visitors in FY24. Museum patrons learn about the founding of the Academy in 1821 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart and those early years, including the stories of the contributions of enslaved people. This year, the museum participated in the Spring Ramble Tour hosted by the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation. On that day, more than 200 guests from around the state visited the museum and learned about the history of the Academy and the Society of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. Additionally, the National Center for Preservation Technology & Training (NCPTT), a division of the National Park Service, completed and released a 3D fly-through video of the enslaved people’s quarters at the Academy of the Sacred Heart. The quarters, constructed in 1834, housed the majority of the enslaved population at the Convent. The video as well as oral interviews about the history of the quarters have been added to their catalog and are available to the public. Importantly, the museum provides a space for Sacred Heart students to learn and engage with their history and understand how it fits into the greater mission.

Religious of the Sacred Heart who live at the Avila retirement community share life with over 200 other residents. It is a place for outreach, companioning, and witnessing to the Society’s mission.
In FY24, the community welcomed over 30 RSCJ visitors. Former Superiors General Kathy Conan, RSCJ, and Barbara Dawson, RSCJ, shared about the General Chapter. Maria Cimperman, RSCJ, spoke of the Synod. Mary Frohlich, RSCJ, shared about her newest book, which many of the sisters have enjoyed. Shell Olson, RSCJ, visited from Japan. Bridget Bearss, RSCJ, spent a few days with the Avila community while she was conducting an LCWR seminar for the religious leaders of upper New York State.
A highlight of the summer for the community was to have Zsófia Trásy, NSCJ, from Chicago, stay for nearly two weeks. Her time at Avila helped renew the RSCJ connection with the Capital City Mission, where she volunteered.
Alumnae of Kenwood and former and present faculty and alumnae/i of The Doane Stuart School stay in touch with the Avila community. The sisters also participate in monthly meetings with Associates, a time for deepening their lives and sharing for the future.
Six Religious of the Sacred Heart reside at Carmel Terrace, an independent living community. The RSCJ view their ministry as both internal and external. Most importantly, they see their ministry as one of presence. Among their “internal” ministries are visiting with the residents at Carmel Terrace, listening, volunteering in the gift shop, serving as Communion ministers and lectors, reading to people who are vision impaired, and running a community recycling program. They also have offered several afternoons of prayer for residents.
Externally, they serve schools in the Network as mentors, resource persons and board members, and as spiritual directors for Busy Persons Retreats offered by Sophie’s Well. They offer spiritual direction, retreats, and Jungian analysis. The community has on several occasions hosted the RSCJ in the Boston area for Mass and a meal, as well as welcomed visitors from throughout the Sacred Heart family to the Boston Area. The RSCJ in the community say that they see their community especially as ministers of presence, being available to respond as needed to those around them and beyond.
On the grounds of Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton, Oakwood is home to about 40 elderly and retired Religious of the Sacred Heart whose needs are cared for by a corps of certified nurse assistants and an administrative staff, two chaplains and an RSCJ community life director.
Several of the religious living at Oakwood continue in ministries as spiritual accompaniers, school trustees, mentors, and counselors. Community life includes the opportunity of daily Mass, weekly reunion, an annual retreat and occasional outings, for example, to museums in San Francisco and elsewhere. Residents enjoy hosting visitors, RSCJ, and other friends and relatives.
Because Oakwood is on the grounds of the school, many student activities are open to the residents. Students come to perform musically or to share what they are learning. A concert by the kindergarten students was a highlight. Many residents are in weekly conversation with a senior class student. Several RSCJ were invited to address the elementary school faculty on the essence of Sacred Heart education.
Finally, an important part of the sisters’ ministry at Oakwood is to accompany their sisters on their last journey; last year nine RSCJ died and now rest in the cemetery on campus.
The Sarah Community is home to six Religious of the Sacred Heart in independent living apartments.
In FY24, eighth graders from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, Missouri, visited the RSCJ at The Sarah Community every other month. They played games, like “Sacred Heart Bingo,” and the students had an opportunity to visit with RSCJ.
In the summer, Margaret Munch, RSCJ, shared stories about Philippine with Sacred Heart educators at the “Roots that Give Us Wings” Conference as well as through the “Aspiring Leaders” program. She was also featured in a video about Florissant, Missouri, used by the Network of Sacred Heart Schools and by the Shrine of St. Ferdinand. Sister Munch also led four tours of St. Ferdinand’s.
Planning meetings, Zoom calls and Mass celebrations on Society feast days keep this RSCJ community connected and engaged with Associates in St. Louis and St. Charles. At The Sarah Community, RSCJ serve on committees like the Laudato Sí committee. They serve as lectors and as Eucharistic Ministers. They bring the needs of friends, family, and the world to their twice weekly group prayer. RSCJ also share spiritual support with all residents.
SEPTEMBER 2023 – AUGUST 2024
The Teresian House retirement community has fourteen Religious of the Sacred Heart residents. RSCJ in the community enjoy a variety of activities including art, book-sharing, games, exercise, and liturgical gatherings. There is also the option for Mass or a Communion service in the chapel.
Once a week, Nance O’Neil, RSCJ, hosts a reunion with RSCJ and usually shares about the Society: its history, current events, the ongoing discussion about the Chapter and the future.
Three RSCJ from the Teresian House Community died this past year. The Masses of Christian Burial were celebrated at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Parish in honor of each.
The RSCJ at Teresian House enjoy visitors who come to the Albany area. This past year visitors have included RSCJ: Barb Dawson, Digna Dacanay, and Kathy Conan. The community also celebrates birthdays with great gusto — offering a gift, decorations, and usually enjoying an ice cream cake. With the Avila Community nearby, the RSCJ at Teresian House join with them to celebrate feast days with liturgy in the chapel, which includes sharing in either refreshments or a meal.
Blessed are those who have died in the Lord; let them rest from their labors for their good deeds go with them.
