INTRODUCTION

Big Iron Farm Show showcases newest in agriculture Visitors to the 39th annual Big Iron Farm Show will immerse themselves in three days of agricultural advancements. The three-day celebration of agriculture includes more than 900 exhibit booths, training sessions, equipment demonstrations and opportunities to see the latest innovations in agriculture. And admission and parking are free! The 39th annual Big Iron Farm Show will welcome visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 10-11, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo. “The Big Iron Farm Show is the largest show in the northern region. It has something for every producer, from large to small. It covers all walks of the agricultural industry,” said Dave Gehrtz, a ProSeed sales manager and this year’s Big Iron Farm Show Committee chairperson. The Big Iron Farm Show strives to educate farmers and ranchers from around the world with the latest cutting-edge agricultural products, equipment, technology and services. As the largest farm show in the Upper Midwest, the Big Iron Farm Show meets that goal by only allowing ag-related vendors to exhibit, said Bryan Schulz, general manager. “It is a one-stop shop. You’re going to see everything from seed to farming equipment to items you’re going to need in your shop,” Schulz said. “It’s also a learning opportunity.” This year, a new building will house vendors. In March, the Harvest Hall building collapsed under heavy snow, so the Big Iron Farm Show sought out Big Iron Farm Show exhibitors who market buildings. Western Farm Sales in Oakes has designed and constructed a 60x140 hoop building on the old concrete slab of the Harvest Hall. The building will house vendors, as the Harvest Hall did in the past.

“I would like to thank Western Farm Sales for making this happen in time for the 39th Big Iron Farm Show,” Gehrtz said. Visitors are encouraged to use this guide to find all the exhibitors at the show.

The latest in ‘big iron’

Visitors will find new innovations at the Big Iron Farm Show, as companies often unveil new equipment at the Big Iron Farm Show, Schulz said. “The Big Iron Farm Show has many offerings, from field demonstrations, to seminars on issues in the farming industry today. If you’re looking for an update to your ag operation, you can find it at Big Iron,” Gehrtz said. The field demonstrations this year will focus on precision weed management, with educational sessions and demonstrations from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. each day south of the Red River Valley Grandstand. “Field demos will be showing precision weed control using drone sprayers. You will want to make time to check this out,” Gehrtz said. Transportation to and from the field demonstration area is provided at no charge. Also, be sure to see the demonstrations conducted on the grounds throughout the Big Iron Farm Show by various exhibitors. Important farm issues will be discussed at the Red River Farm Network Issues and Events Center, located in the Red River Farm Network Issues and Events Center in the center of the grounds..

Traditions continue

Along with the introduction of new equipment and technology, the 39th annual Big Iron Farm Show will include a celebration of rural living:

Committee ready to say hello

Putting together a topnotch show for both visitors and exhibitors is the goal of the Big Iron Farm Show Committee. The Big Iron Farm Show planning is assisted by a volunteer committee involved in various aspects of agribusiness. The committee guides the decisions about the show, looking at the newest technologies. “The Big Iron Committee is made up of volunteers from industry representation to bring the latest information on trends taking place in the ag industry each year. There are many changes taking place in technology and moving along very fast, and this committee looks at all of these advancements to bring them to the Big Iron show each year,” Gehrtz said. The Big Iron Farm Show Committee welcomes Chris Prochnow as a new member this year.

Prochnow has made his home in Casselton for more than 40 years. He and his wife, Erin, have four children. Prochnow has enjoyed the agricultural field his whole life, starting with his grandparents’ farms in Glenfield and Hankinson. He has been with Agassiz Seed & Supply for the past eight years. He is the territory manager for southeastern North Dakota and eastern South Dakota. Prochnow has been involved in his community as a member of the Casselton Fire Department for the last 21 years. He also helps with the Central Cass Booster Club. “In college was the first time I went to Big Iron and I was so amazed by all the equipment and the people that were attending the show,” Prochnow said. “It is like a mega-mall for farmers and other ag industry people. I really never thought about Big Iron after that until I started at Agassiz Seed & Supply and we had a booth. It was so fun to be at the show. In 2017, Agassiz Seed & Supply won the best indoor booth, and that was an honor.” Committee members must be part of a company that is a current exhibitor at the Big Iron Farm Show. Along with Gehrtz and Prochnow, other committee members are Vic Klosterman with Wil-Rich LLC; Terry Goerger, Goerger Seed and Supply Company; John Nowatzki with North Dakota State University Extension Service; Terry Longtin, with Farmers National Company; and Jay Rehder, with the Red River Farm Network. Big Iron Farm Show includes health screenings Once again, North Dakota Living and the Big Iron Farm Show will join forces to provide health information and preventive screenings in a convenient location at the Big Iron Farm Show, so farmers and ranchers can learn more about their own health. Health screening services will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day of the show, Sept. 10-12, at the Health and Safety Center, located in the Horticulture Building on the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo.

N.D. Living promotes health

North Dakota Living partners with the Big Iron Farm Show to sponsor the yearly health screenings. “We encourage visitors to the Big Iron Farm Show to take the time for these health screenings, which are so important. These simple screenings are an inexpensive way to catch any health risks and steer someone toward a more comprehensive visit with a physician,” says Clark Van Horn, advertising manager and organizer of the annual health screening event for

Donate blood

Vitalant of the Dakotas will be collecting blood donations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10; 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 11; and 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. There is no charge to donate blood and be a part of these life-saving efforts. “Blood donors are needed each and every day,” says Rob Miller, donor recruitment manager with Vitalant, and taking time to donate blood will help save the lives of others. “We need people to roll up their sleeves on a volunteer basis each and every day to help provide enough blood for the patients in 70 hospitals in our region. In order to do that, we actually need 250 volunteers every day,” Miller says. Those donating blood can complete the selfinterview online the same day they donate. Simply answer the questions online and bring the forms to the show to make the donation process even faster. Visit www.vitalant.org, and click on the “donate” tab and then click on the health history questionnaire.

“People have to answer those questions the same day they plan on donating,” Miller reminds donors. United Blood Services has a 75year history as being North Dakota’s sole blood provider to nearly 70 hospitals in the tri-state area. United Blood Services has now rebranded as Vitalant, to be unified with 127 nationwide donation centers and 30,000 mobile blood drives.

Know your numbers

Want to prevent heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes? Have you been screened for Hepatitis C? Are your vaccines upto-date? The North Dakota State University School of Pharmacy is offering cholesterol, blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c, hepatitis C, blood pressure and vaccination screenings during the Big Iron Farm Show. Pharmacy students precepted by pharmacists will perform the screenings. Most screenings take less than 10 minutes and no fasting is necessary! Cholesterol screenings are $20. Cholesterol screenings include LDL and triglyceride levels in addition to total cholesterol and HDL. This provides participants with a comprehensive picture of their heart health. Blood sugar screenings are $5, hemoglobin A1c screenings are $15, and blood pressure screenings are free. Hepatitis C screenings will be offered for $25. Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). People born between 1945 and 1965 are at a higher risk to having been exposed to HCV. All baby boomers should be tested at least once for HCV. Vaccines are another service being added to the health screenings this year! Update your tetanus (Tdap), influenza and pneumococcal vaccines. Providers will be on site to administer vaccines and update your health information. Bring your prescription insurance card, as most vaccines are covered by insurance. “Health screenings are important to everyone. Screenings AGRIBUSINESS

are a great way to assess a person’s risk for preventable diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes,” says Jeanne Frenzel, associate professor and pharmacist. “Participants receive immediate results and a complete consultation regarding their results. Health screenings can detect diseases and conditions early when they are easier to treat. We can help monitor current disease treatments, validate at-home screenings, and even share screening results with the participant’s primary health provider. Vaccines can help protect you against a number of serious diseases. Let us ensure your vaccines are up-to-date in order to lower your chance of getting certain diseases.”

Hold onto your hearing

The Minnesota State University Moorhead speech-languagehearing department, in partnership with the FM Sertoma Club, will be conducting free hearing screenings in a portable audio booth. “Getting your hearing screened is important, especially for farmers who are exposed to noisy equipment on a regular basis,” says Vicki Riedinger, clinical director. “Getting a hearing screening annually will help you know if you’re doing enough to protect your hearing. If you don’t pass the hearing screening, it is recommended that you go in for

an evaluation.” Stop by for a free hearing screening and get a free set of earplugs.

Learn about rehab

The N.D. Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) Rural Services are available to farmers, ranchers and people living in the rural community who are experiencing difficulties doing their job because of a permanent injury, illness or impairment. During the health screenings, free information will be available on services that may be provided through DVR.

Practice stroke prevention

Essentia Health’s partnership with the Big Iron Farm Show is an excellent opportunity for participants to receive valuable information about the warning signs of stroke and how to reduce the risk of stroke. Essentia Health Fargo is a Comprehensive Stroke Center, dedicated to providing the community with the best stroke education and prevention and the most advanced stroke treatment. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in North Dakota, however more than 80 percent of strokes are preventable. Stop by to learn about what you can do to reduce your risk for stroke. n

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS PROGRAM

International visitors attend Big Iron for 13th year The Big Iron Farm Show once again welcomes representatives from other countries to West Fargo for the 13th annual International Visitors Program Sept. 9-12. The International Visitors Program brings agricultural equipment buyers and agribusiness professionals from global markets to North Dakota in conjunction with the Big Iron Farm Show in West Fargo, connecting foreign buyers with North Dakota products. Coordinated by the North Dakota Trade Office (NDTO), with support from the U.S. Commercial Service (USCS), these organizations serve as hosts and provide programming services, including transportation and interpreters, to the international visitors for the duration of their program stays. Program participants are identified through NDTO’s cultivated relationships with agribusiness leaders in countries worldwide and by USCS’s international recruiting efforts. Such efforts have provided a steady stream of annual international visitors to the Big Iron Farm Show and secured key introductions to North Dakota’s leading manufacturers and dealers of farm machinery, agricultural technology and agribusiness services. Approximately 15 countries are typically represented at the Big Iron Farm Show through the International Visitors Program. “The Big Iron Farm Show International Visitors Program brings agriculture leaders and equipment buyers from all over the world,” says Lindsey Warner, program organizer and NDTO director of marketing and events.

Warner says the response from North Dakota’s welldeveloped markets has been great. Russia, for example, is experiencing a resurgence in ag production. And large delegations are registered from Romania and Uruguay, both of which are established markets to North Dakota ag equipment companies. “We’ve also had a good response from countries that are focused on increasing agricultural productivity and food security, such as Pakistan, Kenya and Ethiopia,” Warner adds. “We work very closely with the U.S. Commercial Service in Fargo and partner with their in-country personnel to identify markets that are open to North Dakota’s high-quality agricultural products and services.” On the grounds of the Big Iron Farm Show, international visitors will enjoy refreshments, meeting space and other amenities through use of the designated International Visitors’ Pavilion. Participants attend an exclusive exhibition where companies deliver customized presentations and meet one-on-one with visitors. Educational sessions and tours of agricultural manufacturers are also offered. Additionally, two receptions provide further opportunities to establish relationships with international delegates and share North Dakota’s agricultural expertise. The relationships forged through the Big Iron Farm Show International Visitors Program, Warner says, often lead to foreign market sales trips and export sales for North Dakota companies. For more information about the program, visit www. ndto.com or call the North Dakota Trade Office at 701-929-6702. n

International visitors get a firsthand introduction to North Dakota farm machinery, agricultural technology and agribusiness services during the Big Iron Farm Show.

AG PROFILE

John Nowatzki, an NDSU agricultural machines specialist, right, led a discussion on precision weed management during the Dickinson Research Extension Center annual field day by demonstrating an unmanned aircraft system equipped with the ability to deliver herbicides to weeds.

Field demos to focus on precision weed management Precision weed management will be the focus of this year’s field demonstrations Sept. 10-12 at the Big Iron Farm Show. The Big Iron Farm Show field demonstrations will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. each day south of the Red River Valley Grandstand. North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension personnel are coordinating a precision weed management educational program scheduled for each afternoon during the Big Iron Farm Show. The afternoon education programs will begin at 1 p.m. Scheduled speakers from NDSU will present a short informational session on precision weed management, followed by demonstrations by participating companies of their precision weed management equipment. Each participating commercial sprayer company will have time allotted to explain the technology on their machines related to precision weed management, economic advantages and environmental protection. Also planned is a demonstration of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for precision weed management. Precision weed management on sprayers includes the ability to control the output of sprayer nozzles or of entire sections based on mapping. Commercial applicators are using the technology to turn nozzles on

and off as they go over mapped areas of no-spray zones or during equipment turns for cost-savings and for environmental benefits. While the technology isn’t in the field yet, NDSU is researching even more complex precision weed management. Led by Dr. Xin (Rex) Sun and Dr. Yu (Heather) Zhang in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department, NDSU research is focusing on identifying eight or more common weeds in crops using multispectral cameras carried over fields by drones. This “hyperspectral” imaging focuses on identifying the key weeds. Those images are then being used to apply precision weed management for the specific weeds. “We are identifying the herbicide resistant weeds after chemical is applied,” explained John Nowatzki, an NDSU agricultural machines specialist. Using a wide spectrum, specific weeds may be identified, then a map can be developed, with different identifiers for different weeds. Maps would be downloaded into the sprayer to identify those areas for control, automatically turning nozzles on or off based on the field images gathered by the drone. “As we move forward, there might even be an opportunity to put more than one chemical in the

sprayer,” Nowatzki said. During the Big Iron Farm Show, producers will also see a demonstration of an unmanned aerial system (UAS) for precision weed management. Loaded with four gallons of liquid, a UAS sprayer can be airborne for 20 to 25 minutes with four batteries. The six nozzles on two booms are capable of delivering chemical as the UAS hovers over a specific plant within the field. Nowatzki envisions applications in which the UAS sprayer can be used to identify weeds within the field, then deliver spot applications of chemical on weeds, such as palmer amaranth. A Homeland Surveillance & Electronics LLC (HSE-UAV) UAS designed for agricultural and commercial use will be demonstrated by NDSU during the Big Iron Farm Show. The UAS sprayer, which costs about $15,000, weighs approximately 80 pounds, so a pilot would have to be certified through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly the UAS. Applicators would have to be approved as a commercial applicator and have an exemption from the FAA to use a UAS for chemical applications. “We see it for a couple of applications. One would be for small fields that are close to buildings or close to a site which would be restricted from aerial applicators,” Nowatzki said. “The second application would be weeds in rangeland and it’s not easy to drive a four-wheeler in some of these areas because of roughness.” Another possible application would be individual herbicide-resistant weeds that would be treated with a different chemical. UAS sprayers are being used elsewhere in the United States in horticultural applications and for vector control in towns, Nowatzki said. “I think we’ll see uses of them. But there has to be a return,” he said.

Challenges include making sure that the technology is trustworthy and autonomous systems are operating properly, and that pilots are well-trained. “With every new technology, you have some potential for problems,” Nowatzki said. Other smaller, more inexpensive UAS could be utilized for scouting fields or livestock or for fence patrol, taking high-resolution photos or video, he said. n

Despite all technological advances around the combine and platform, the cutting system is still the first part to touch your crop and determines your harvest success. Group Schumacher understands the importance of having a superior cutting system, which is why it has announced two new improvements on the Schumacher Easy Cut II Cutterbar System. The new Schumacher top and bottom roller guides reduce the friction on the knife back and allows the knife to run more smoothly. It also results in less knife load and power requirements for the knife drive or wobble box. The new short SCH Easy Cut guards improve crop flow in no-till soybeans. They are recommended for flex grain platforms. S.I. Distributing has more than 30 years of experience in offering SCH

Unverferth Manufacturing Co. Inc. announces the addition of a mounted cover crop seeder for its Rolling Harrow ® soil conditioner.

Unverferth adds to product line Unverferth Manufacturing Co. Inc. announces the addition of a mounted cover crop seeder for its Rolling Harrow® soil conditioner to provide timesaving, one-pass planting of these profit-enhancing crops. With time being limited during the peak fall cover crop planting season, this new option provides economical

one-pass planting and incorporation with the Rolling Harrow soil conditioner by itself, or combined with a lead tillage tool for enhanced residue sizing and tillage. The cover crop seeder features hydraulic-powered air delivery for covering a larger area with greater productivity. The chevronshaped, roller-style meter provides continuous seed flow for an even stand. The application rate is determined by tractor speed and an electric-over-hydraulic meter setting. Unit-mounted lights indicating air pressure, seed level and seed flow provide quick verification of operation. The new cover crop seeder is available with new Rolling Harrow 1245 and 1245D models with flator stack-folding designs up to 37 feet, and can easily be mounted to most of these previous models in those sizes. Growers can check with their nearest Unverferth dealer or visit www.umequip.com for complete details.

Estes concaves 1/6 page- perform $445

The XPR Concave System by Estes Performance Concaves brings you the latest and most advanced threshing and separating technology for John Deere and Case IH combines. The XPR concaves work for all crops, so you can go from hard-threshing wheat to corn without changing concaves. Plus, XPR combine concaves stop rotor loss with more capacity so 4,000 bushels per hour is now a reality. The XPR concave’s bar is engineered to slow crop flow for more grainon-grain threshing while running a slower rotor and more open concave. This results in superior grain quality with less cracks, splits and broken cobs. The end result is threshing grain faster and unloading grain sooner in the concave section. The XPR’s new separation grate eliminates spitting grain out the back that is caught up in the crop mat. Stop rotor loss with less grain damage, more capacity and a cleaner

Haybuster’s prize bale processors Haybuster is proud to showcase what it is calling its heavyweight bale processors. The 2660 and 2665 models are engineered to help you save 30 percent of your hay and straw. With shredder chambers that can handle bales in any condition, you’ll get the most out of your crop. Each of these models work faster, too. This is accomplished with heavy-duty conveyor table chains in combination with 1300-RPM rotor speeds. Haybuster has fondly nicknamed the 2660, “The Goldenboy,” because of its dependability. It works doubletime with a two-stage bale loader that carries two bales at once. The 2665, otherwise known as the “Shortcut” by the Haybuster team, is excellent for bedding cattle and erosion control mulching. This model comes with more hammers, more stripper kits and more slug bars, giving you additional cutting and ultimately a shorter product. Additional accessories include the FT-24 feed tank for simultaneous feeding of grain and/or supplements. This attachment is compatible with both models. Additional machine specifications can be found at www.Haybuster.info. n
