2022–23 SEASON Resident Orchestra at:

Welcome to our Resident Season at Cadogan Hall It gives me the greatest pleasure to present to you our brand new 2022–23 Season of concerts as Resident Orchestra at Cadogan Hall. They say that there’s ‘no place like home’ and that’s certainly how we feel about the intimate atmosphere and rich acoustic at Cadogan Hall, where audience members can really feel at one with the music and the Orchestra and our guest artists thrive off this closeness. Engaging pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason joins us as the RPO’s Artist-in-Residence, performing three concerts across the season. Her interpretation of the music of Clara Schumann has already won wide critical acclaim, and we look forward to Isata opening the season with Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto, followed by works by Prokofiev and Dohnányi. You can get to know Isata further on in this brochure and, of course, by joining us to enjoy her performances. The Orchestra welcomes an inspiring line-up of conductors and soloists to collaborate on something of a musical adventure, with pieces that will tell intriguing stories, explore magical worlds and stir the senses. We have highly anticipated return visits by Principal Associate Conductor Alexander Shelley, Anu Tali and Jac van Steen, plus exciting debuts from conductors including Shiyeon Sung, Roderick Cox, Adam Hickox, Gemma New and Anna-Maria Helsing, to name but a few. As well as Isata, an outstanding collection of soloists will take centre-stage, including Jennifer Pike, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Shunta Morimoto and Rosanne Philippens, and there is the chance to hear the next instalment of our collaboration with the City of London Choir, exploring the music of Vaughan Williams and Ravel. You can discover more about these concerts online at rpo.co.uk/cadogan22 and we look forward to sharing another season of great live orchestral music with you.

Isata Kanneh-Mason

RPO Artist-in-Residence, 2022–23 Isata Kanneh-Mason is the recipient of numerous awards, both as a solo artist and as a member of the Kanneh-Mason family. Her debut album of music by Clara Schumann entered the UK classical charts at No.1. Since graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2020, Isata has embarked on a successful and increasingly busy concert career, with concerto appearances, solo recitals and chamber concerts throughout the UK and abroad. We caught up with Isata ahead of commmencing her residency to find out a bit more... What has been the biggest inspiration throughout your musical life? I would say the people around me – no one person – my parents, family, friends, peers – all the people who have supported me. Are there any musicians in your generation who you look up to in particular? Tom Poster and Elena Urioste. I love the way they make music, they are both passionate about chamber music. I’ve played with them quite a bit and they’re lovely to collaborate with and they make music in a way that I really agree with and admire. With the past few years of dramatic change to our way of life, has your attitude to music and performing live changed at all? I think I have a greater appreciation for live performance and the spontaneity of being on stage and having the live audience there with you. What words of encouragement would you give to young people wanting to get into performing classical and orchestral music? Music can feel both social and quite isolating so I would really suggest if you’re feeling the latter to search for other young musicians. With a little research you’ll find other young musicians and orchestras and small groups and if you join them, you’ll make great friends through music... What music do you enjoy listening to outside of the classical world? R&B, Reggae and Soul. Don’t miss Isata’s performances on Thursday 22 September 2022, Thursday 2 March 2023 and Wednesday 3 May 2023. isatakannehmason.com
