RED H T SUMMER CAMPS AT ROL AND PARK COUNTRY SCHOOL

Dear Families, This year, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join together in person for Red Hot Summer Camps at Roland Park Country School. Many of us have spent all or much of the year huddled in our houses for the safety of our families and others and are longing for the companionship and camaraderie of work, school, and social gatherings. We are thrilled to offer a wide variety of camps for boys and girls ages 2* to 18 from June 21 to August 13.

We are incredibly excited to welcome campers back to campus for a variety of camps designed to give families the best that RPCS has to offer in the way of teachers and coaches and fun and engaging programming with some of our most trusted partners. We also know that not everyone is ready to join us again in person this year, so we will continue to offer online programming through our Virtual Academy, including academic and forcredit courses.

For boys and girls ages 5 – 18, we encourage you to browse our curated list of offerings with the intention for each family to tailor your child’s perfect summer experience.

With so much uncertainty surrounding 2020, we are thrilled to once again offer our most well-loved camps as well as some exciting new ones, especially some wonderful academic options to help your children in grades K-8 strengthen learning from an online school year and/or get ahead for the next year. We have honed our health and safety guidelines throughout the school year and are very confident in the measures we have taken to reduce the risk of COVID-19 and to help our families feel safe and comfortable. Our comprehensive safety guidelines will be shared with all families prior to the start of camp. For our Cancellation & Refund policy, please see page 4.

BEFORE-CAMP AND AFTER-CAMP CARE! Does your camper need to be dropped off before 9 a.m. or stay later than 4 p.m.? Sign up for Before or After-Camp care. Available for all ages!

Before-Camp Care is available to registered campers from 8–9 a.m. for an additional charge of $40 per week. Campers must be signed up in advance to ensure there is available space.

After-Camp Care is available to registered campers from 4–5 p.m. for an additional charge of $40 per week. Campers must be signed up in advance to ensure we have available space and to ensure health and safety protocols.

Please note a $15 per quarter hour late charge will be billed per family for late pick-ups (after 5 p.m.).

RED HOT LUNCHTIME Due to the health restrictions around COVID-19, we will not be offering a lunch option this year. Campers who are participating in a full day experience must bring a lunch, two snacks, and a water bottle.

Campers participating in a half day option must bring one snack and a water bottle.

Updated COVID Refund and Cancellation Policies 1. RPCS will not give a refund after the first day of camp.

2. Should camps be canceled before their scheduled start dates due to the pandemic or other unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, parents will receive a full refund.

Each day of camp is packed with a variety of fun filled activities to support your child’s growing mind. Each week’s theme will give your children an opportunity to learn and grow using our natural spaces around the RPCS campus. Our caring, experienced staff will pack your child’s day full of stories, play, nature discovery, water play, and exciting themed activities.

My First Camp at Little Reds is the perfect first camp experience for our youngest learners to get the chance to work on social skills and fine motor skills, as well as rising kindergarten skill bumps!

Academic Bridge Camps Driven by the “power of small,” these camps will offer support in reading and math to deepen and prepare students for their next grade level. They offer students an opportunity to work in smaller groups with an instructor to deepen their comprehension and ready them for their next grade level through fun and engaging activities to accelerate their learning.

These small, personalized learning groups will meet daily and cater to local families looking for additional educational support during virtual instruction due to COVID-19.

Taught by elementary school teachers, these camps will focus on in reviewing/ strengthening students’ skills in reading or math. Rather than breaking up groups by traditional grade, families will self-select into cohorts for Reading Comprehension: Early Reading, Midlevel Reading, or Advanced Reading or Math Comprehension: Early Math, Midlevel Math, or Advanced Math.

The Midlevel Reader Camp will support students in grades 2 – 5 who are looking for additional support with intermediate reading. This camp is appropriate for students who are entering second grade in the fall or who might need additional instruction to strengthen their intermediate reading skills. The camp instructor will teach a week-long camp focused on strengthening basic reading and comprehension through fun, engaging activities!

Who is a midlevel reader? A midlevel reader is a child, usually in grades first through fifth, who can read smoothly most of the time with few mistakes, stopping sometimes to sound out words; uses pictures and clues to figure out plots; sounds out new words; can comprehend and answer simple questions about a story; and is beginning to understand punctuation.

Midlevel Math Instructor TBD | Ages 6 – 10 | $225 Session 1: June 28 – July 2 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Session 2: July 26 – July 30 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The Midlevel Math Camp will support students in grades 2 – 3 who are learning or need extra support in midlevel math. This course is appropriate for students who are entering second or third grade in the fall or who might need additional instruction to strengthen their midlevel math skills. The instructor will work with students on reviewing math lessons and offer additional instruction to support intermediate math comprehension.

Who is best suited for midlevel math? Midlevel math will offer review and support for students in intermediate math concepts such as: adding and subtracting within 100, understanding even and odd numbers, place value, standards of measure, fractions, simple graphs (picture, bar, number line plots), basic word problems, basic multiplication and division, and shape identification.

Advanced Reader Instructor TBD | Ages 8 – 11 | $225 Session 1: July 12 – July 16 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Session 2: August 2 – August 6 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The Advanced Reader Camp will support students in grades 3 – 5 who are looking for additional support or acceleration for younger students who are advanced readers. This course is appropriate for students who are entering third grade in the fall or younger students who are looking for additional instruction to strengthen their advanced reading skills. The camp instructor will teach a week-long camp focused on strengthening basic reading and comprehension through fun, engaging activities!

Who is an advanced reader? An advanced reader is a child, usually in third through fifth grades, who can read smoothly and fluently with few, if any, breaks; reads chapter books and can fully comprehend stories and plots; reads and enjoys books without pictures; learns new words easily, by either looking them up or asking the meaning and remembering them next time they see the word; has the ability to read aloud with expression; and can answer questions about the story.

Advanced Math Instructor TBD | Ages 8 – 11 | $225 Session 1: July 12 – July 16 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The Advanced Math Camp will support students in grades 4 – 5 who are learning or need extra support in advanced math. This course is appropriate for students who are entering fourth or fifth grade in the fall or who might need additional instruction to strengthen their advanced math skills. The instructor will work with students on reviewing math lessons and offer additional instruction to support advanced elementary math comprehension.

Who is best suited for advanced math? Advanced math will offer review and support or students in advanced elementary math concepts such as: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, number and operationsfractions, measurement and data, and geometry.

Play Like the REDS Embracing the REDS philosophy of athletics, REDS Summer Sports Camps provide a competitive and supportive athletic environment, while instilling the values of responsibility, integrity, self-discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Our programs are designed to encourage girls to try new things and play to their strengths. Surrounded by peers in the encouraging and inclusive atmosphere of summer camp, girls can learn to take risks, be assertive, build friendships, and become the best versions of themselves.

REDS Multi-Sports Camp RPCS Coaching Staff | Ages 8 – 14 | $399 June 21 – June 25 | 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Join RPCS coaches for a week of fun-filled learning of multiple sports. Throughout the week, new sports will be introduced to campers, which could include lacrosse, soccer, basketball, track and field, cross country, volleyball and more! Our sport-specific staff will focus on fundamental skills and progress into drills and games, making for an unforgettable sports camp experience. All skill levels are welcome, and equipment will be provided, if needed.

Roland Park Country School Lacrosse is excited to offer lacrosse camps this summer! Our goal with each camp is for players to develop their skills, take risks and learn the game in a positive environment. focus on big picture play and tactical awareness while also incorporating individual skills into each session.

Note: Players must provide their own equipment including stick, goggles and mouthguard. Goalies also need to provide their own equipment.

Our RPCS Basketball summer camp is designed for players of all levels, focusing on fundamental skill development in the areas of ball handling, shooting, passing, defense and team play. Join RPCS coaches and current and former REDS players for a fun-filled week of basketball instruction, including station work, games, oneon-one teaching and team coaching. This camp is open to all ability levels and will emphasize good sportsmanship, teamwork, encouragement and enthusiasm – the essential values of our RPCS Basketball program!

REDS Running Camp RPCS Coaching Staff, Janet Weller and Patrick Donohue | Ages 8 – 15 | $225 Session 1: July 12 – July 16 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Session 2: August 9 – August 13 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The REDS Running Camp will cover all basics of running: road running, track and field, Olympic running, and trail running. This camp is perfect for both seasoned kid-runners looking to improve and for beginning runners who are ready to learn the basics. Daily camp schedule will include core and strength training, stretching, form instruction, workouts, running games, and pro tips. The week will culminate in a race and award ceremony on Friday. Campers will be split into groups based on age and ability.

REDS Field Hockey Camp RPCS Field Hockey Coach, Liz Hamilton | Ages 9 – 15 | $225 July 19 – July 23 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Join Roland Park Country School Field Hockey coaches and players for a week of fun and informative field hockey training! Camp will feature individual and group skill work, as well as competitive scrimmaging. Take the field with our REDS to improve your stick skills and game play in a positive and fun environment.

Is your young athlete looking to learn a new sport?

Have them try rowing at the RPCS indoor rowing center! Participants will learn the basics of both sweep rowing (one oar) and sculling (two oars), using our fleet of Concept 2 Indoor Rowers and our eight-station indoor rowing tank. Instruction will include technique as well as games, training tips, and more.

About the Instructor: David Rosen began his rowing career in Oxford, England at Keble College Boat Club, and continued at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. David has 22 years of experience as a coach at the high school, club, and collegiate levels, (with 15 of those seasons at RPCS). David holds a Level III/ Advanced coaching certificate from USRowing.

REDS Volleyball Camp RPCS Volleyball Coach, Amanda Eich.

Roland Park Country School’s volleyball camp is designed for players of all levels who want to learn and improve their fundamental volleyball skills in a fun and encouraging environment. Players are given the unique opportunity to receive instruction from the RPCS coaching staff as well as past RPCS players. Each day is filled with a variety of activities

all about cooking Measure, stir, whisk, and bake! Your children will learn valuable cooking skills while having fun at these delicious camps.

REDS On-Water Rowing Camp RPCS Director of Rowing, David Rosen Ages 11 – 18 | $425 August 9 – August 13 | 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Encourage your child to get out on the water this summer and try rowing! Sessions will include initial instruction in the RPCS rowing tanks, followed by on-water sessions at the Baltimore Community Rowing boathouse. Campers will learn sweep rowing in team boats as well as boat rigging and handling. Campers must be able to swim. Campers will be transported to and from RPCS by school minibus.

We have taken the best coaching methodologies and practices from England, Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, and France and have woven them together in a multi-faceted on and off-field coaching experience. With programs for each age, the curriculums include a variety of foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, freestyle soccer, small-sided games and coached scrimmages.

Cooking with Paige – Dumplings & Egg Rolls Paige Lentini, Sage Dining | Ages 9 – 13 | $199 July 5 – July 9 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m During Dumpling and Egg Roll week, students will learn all about the different styles of dumplings and egg rolls and the various cuisines they come from.

Students will learn all about the different fillings and wraps and how to wrap or roll them! Students will also learn the histories of the ingredients and why they are steamed or fried. We will also see the authentic tools used to make each item. Each day, we will learn either about the cooking topic or how and why each step in the recipe is important. At the end of the week, we will put it all together and show off our creations and explain why we chose our favorite ingredients!

Environmental Science Summer Research Experience for Young Women (E.S.S.R.E.) July 8 - 26, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Now in its 19th year, E.S.S.R.E. is a unique, nationally recognized three-week research internship available to all high school girls from the greater Baltimore area. Participants explore the soil chemistry and organisms of the Roland Park Country School woodland campus, experience how to engage in self-directed field research and learn a wide range of general research skills such as statistical analyses and writing peer-reviewed scientific papers. Working in research teams, the interns also learn how to author lab activities for studying soil ecology in other settings and design web pages to disseminate these labs via the program’s website. For their time and training, each intern receives a stipend of $500. virtual academy COVID-19 has unleashed a myriad of challenges for healthcare workers, educators, parents, and other essential employees. RPCS has met those challenges head-on and always with the underlying mission of helping our students live healthy and be well.

In that spirit, RPCS launched online summer “camp” offerings in 2020 for children in grades K-12 through the RPCS Virtual Academy and is continuing a selection of those offerings in summer 2021.

The goal of these online “camps” and courses is threefold: to support foundational learning for students, to accelerate learning for students who want to use this time for rigorous study, and to provide enriching activities that engage a variety of interests.

Math Skills Boot Camp – Rising 3rd Grade, Skills Review RPCS Teacher, Sydney Carter | Age 8 | $200 July 26 – July 30 | 1 – 3 p.m.

Alohamora! Unlock a magical online experience through the world of Harry Potter with a perfect blend of enchanting activities, games and creations. All campers will receive an official Welcome to Hogwarts letter with the schedule for each day’s theme and events, which will include potions, trivia, arts and crafts, dress-ups, a scavenger hunt. Students will be sorted into Hogwarts houses and be able to earn house points throughout the week for participation in the various activities. GOA Courses for Credit Roland Park Country School has determined to allow RPCS students to add these classes to their transcript, following successful completion of the course. Students may also work with the RPCS registrar to include courses as pass/fail. If you attend a different high school, please work with your registrar and school heads to determine for credit eligibility.

About Global Online Academy Small, engaging online courses Each of our online summer high school classes is capped at 20 students, guided by an expert teacher from a GOA member school. Students come from many different schools and share a passion for the subject.

They build relationships with teachers and classmates through frequent, mostly asynchronous discussions and collaboration. At GOA, online learning is not about video-watching and quiz-taking. Learning at GOA is about relevant, hands-on ideas and coursework. Students log in multiple times a week to join discussions, work together on projects, and design their own ways to show their learning.

Daily meetings will take place Monday – Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. via Zoom, in addition to selfpaced activities and online sharing opportunities.

Summer 2021 Course Offerings GOA is offering some of its most popular semester classes in an intensive 7-week format.

Most of these courses cover a semester’s worth of material and expect a 10-12 hour per week commitment from students. For Spanish 1, which is designed to replace a yearlong high school course, students should expect to dedicate 15-20 hours per week. The summer term runs from June 14 to July 30, 2021.

9/11 in a Global Context Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 $1,000 Course Overview September 11, 2001 was a tragic day that changed the world in profound ways. In this political science course, students explore the causes of 9/11, the events of the day itself, and its aftermath locally, nationally, and around the world. In place of a standard chronological framework, students instead view these events through a series of separate lenses.

A Comprehensive Picture: Studying All the Angles Each lens represents a different way to view the attacks and allows students to understand 9/11 as an event with complex and interrelated causes and outcomes. Using a variety of technologies and activities, students work individually and with peers to evaluate each lens. Students then analyze the post-9/11 period and explore how this event affected the U.S., the Middle East, and the wider world.

Award-Winning, In-Depth Teaching Experience The teachers of this course have been recognized by the 9/11 Tribute Center for their outstanding contribution to student understanding of the events of September 11, 2001.

Students also deepen their understanding of the social stigmas associated with mental illnesses, often as a vehicle for enabling them to develop empathy for those who struggle with mental disorders and those who support them.

What 21st century skills are you cultivating in your leadership team? Students in this course will tackle real-world problems facing businesses large and small in today’s fast changing global marketplace where radical reinvention is on the minds of many business leaders. Students will work collaboratively and independently on case studies, exploring business issues through varied lenses including operations, marketing, human capital, finance and risk management as well as sustainability. As they are introduced to the concepts and practices of business, students will identify, analyze and propose solutions to business problems, engaging in research of traditional and emerging industries, from established multinationals to startups.

Computer Science I: Computational Thinking Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview * This course or its equivalent is a prerequisite to all Computer Science II classes at GOA This Computationl Thinking Course focuses on solving problems, designing systems, and understanding human behavior. It has applications not only in computer science, but also a myriad other fields of study. This introductory level course centers on thinking like a computer scientist, especially when it comes to understanding how computer scientists define and solve problems.

The Logical First Step: Understanding the Basics of Computer Science Students begin the course by developing an understanding of what computer science is, how it can be used by people who are not programmers, and why it’s a useful skill for all people to cultivate.

Within this context, students are exposed to the power and limits of computational thinking.

Reading Between the Lines: Online Programming Classes for Beginners Students are introduced to entry-level programming constructs that will help them apply their knowledge of computational thinking in practical ways. They will learn how to read code and pseudocode, as well as begin to develop strategies for debugging programs. By developing computational thinking and programming skills, students will have the core knowledge to define and solve problems in future computer science courses.

Computer Science II: Java Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview This high school Java training course teaches students how to write programs in the Java programming language. Java is the backbone of many web applications, especially eCommerce and government sites. It is also the foundational code of the Android operating system and many tools of the financial sector. Students learn the major syntactical elements of the Java language though object-oriented design. The emphasis in the course will be on creating intelligent systems though the fundamentals of Computer Science.

Cyber Security Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview: Cybercriminals leverage technology and human behavior to attack our online security. This course explores the fundamentals of, and vulnerabilities in, the design of: • Computers (computer components, connectivity, virtualization, and system hardening) • Networks (design, Domain Name Services, and TCP/IP, hubs, switches, and routers) • The internet (DNS, HTTP, routing protocols, and access control for internet devices) Students will learn how denial of service, spoofing, and flood attacks work. Basic programming introduced in the course will inform hashing strategies, while an introduction to ciphers and cryptography will show how shared-key encryption works for HTTPS and TLS traffic. Students will also explore the fundamentals of data forensics and incident response protocols, including analysis of current threats and best practice modeling for cyber defense, such as password complexity, security, management, breach analysis, and hash cracking. Although there is no computer science prerequisite for this course, students with some background will certainly find avenues to flex their knowledge in this course.

Creative Nonfiction Writing Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview Tell your own stories and the stories of the world around you! This course centers on the art of shaping real experiences into powerful narratives while growing in foundational writing skills. Participants will read, examine, and write diverse works of creative nonfiction including personal narratives, podcasts, opinion editorials, profile pieces, and more. Emphasizing process over product, this writing workshop provides opportunities to create in new ways. Students will practice essential craft elements (voice, style, structure) while reflecting stories from their own lives, communities, and interests. They will also build a personalized library of inspiring mentor texts, consider opportunities for publication, and develop sustainable writing habits. Both in realtime video chats and online discussion spaces, students will support one another intentionally; feedback is an essential component of this course, and students will gain experience in the workshop model, actively participating in a thriving, global writing community. Digital Photography Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview In an era where everyone has become a photographer obsessed with documenting most aspects of life, we swim in a sea of images, whether posted on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest, or another digital medium. Yet what does taking a powerful and persuasive photo

with a 35mm digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera require? Digital Photography explores this question in a variety of ways, beginning with the technical aspects of using and taking advantage of a powerful camera then moving to a host of creative questions and opportunities. Technical topics such as aperture, shutter, white balance, and resolution get ample coverage in the first half of the course, yet each is pursued with the goal of enabling students to leverage the possibilities that come with manual image capture. Once confident about technical basics, students apply their skills when pursuing creative questions such as how to understand and use light, how to consider composition, and how to take compelling portraits.

Throughout the course, students tackle projects that enable sharing their local and diverse settings, ideally creating global perspectives through doing so. Additionally, students interact with each other often through critique sessions and collaborative exploration of the work of many noteworthy professional photographers, whose images serve to inspire and suggest the diverse ways that photography tells visual stories. Prerequisite: Students must have daily access to a DSLR camera.

This is an UC-approved course Fiction Writing Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview Online Fiction Writing Courses This course connects students interested in creative writing (primarily short fiction) and provides a space for supportive and constructive feedback. Students gain experience in the workshop model, learning how to effectively critique and discuss one each other’s writing in an online environment. In addition to developing skills as readers within a workshop setting, students strive to develop their own writing identities through a variety of exercises.

International Connection: The Globalization of Creative Fiction Writing This Online Fiction Writing Course capitalizes on the geographic diversity of the students by eliciting stories that shed light on both the commonalities and differences of life experiences in different locations. Additionally, we read and discuss the work of authors from around the globe.

Genocide & Human Rights Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview Students in this course study several of the major genocides of the 20th century (Armenian, the Holocaust, Cambodian, and Rwandan), analyze the role of the international community in responding to and preventing further genocides (with particular attention to the Nuremberg tribunals), and examine current human rights crises around the world. Students read primary and secondary sources, participate in both synchronous and asynchronous discussions with classmates, write brief papers, read short novels, watch documentaries, and develop a human rights report card website about a nation in the world of their choice.

Introduction to Investments Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview In this course, students simulate the work of investors by working with the tools, theories, and decision-making practices that define smart investment. We explore concepts in finance and apply them to investment decisions in three primary contexts: • Portfolio Management • Venture Capital • Social Investing After an introduction to theories about valuation and risk management, students simulate scenarios in which they must make decisions to grow an investment portfolio. They manage investments in stocks, bonds, and options to learn a range of strategies for increasing the value of their portfolios.

The Next Steps: Applied Investment Management & Risk Calculation In the second unit of this online high school investments class, students take the perspective of venture capital investors, analyzing startup companies and predicting their value before they become public. In the third unit, students examine case studies of investment funds that apply the tools of finance to power social change. Throughout the course, students learn from experts who have experience in identifying value and managing risk in global markets. By studying and debating a series of real legal cases, students will sharpen their ability to think like lawyers who research, write and speak persuasively. The course will focus on problems that lawyers encounter in daily practice, and on the rules of professional conduct case law. In addition to practicing writing legal briefs, advising fictional clients and preparing opening and closing statements for trial, students will approach such questions as the law and equity, the concept of justice, jurisprudence and legal ethics.

In Introduction to Psychology, students explore three central psychological perspectives in order to develop a multi-faceted understanding of what thinking like a psychologist encompasses: • The behavioral • The cognitive • The sociocultural The additional question of “How do psychologists put what they know into practice?” informs study of the research methods in psychology, the ethics surrounding them, and the application of those methods to practice.

Real World Application: Understanding Psychology Day-to-Day Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 During the first five units of this psychology high school class, students gather essential information that they apply during a group project on the unique characteristics of adolescent psychology. Students similarly envision a case study on depression, which enables application of understandings from the first five units.

The course concludes with a unit on positive psychology, which features current positive psychology research on living mentally healthy lives. Course Overview Once thought of as the purest but least applicable part of mathematics, number theory is now by far the most commonly applied: every one of the millions of secure internet transmissions occurring each second is encrypted using ideas from number theory. This online high school Number Theory class covers the fundamentals of this classical, elegant, yet supremely relevant subject. This course provides a foundation for further study of number theory, but even more, it develops the skills of mathematical reasoning and proof in a concrete and intuitive way, great preparation for any future course in upper-level college mathematics or theoretical computer science.

Course Overview: Understanding and managing personal finances is the key to financial success for the future.

This course builds on GOA Personal Finance Competencies and provides the basic knowledge and skills to make informed real world financial decisions. Students will learn to apply decisionmaking skills to evaluate career options and define personal goals parlaying that to understand future earning potential. They will learn wealth building strategies they can incorporate into their financial decision making. The course has been structured to guide the learner in making wise decisions about spending, savings, credit, insurance, the risks and rewards of investment and efficient use of income for personal financial success.

Cryptography: Where History & Applied Expertise Collide Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 We progressively develop the tools needed to understand the RSA algorithm, the most common encryption scheme used worldwide. Along the way, we invent some encryption schemes of our own and discover how to play games using number theory. We also get a taste of the history of the subject, which involves the most famous mathematicians from antiquity to the present day, and we see parts of the story of Fermat’s Last Theorem, a 350-year-old statement that was fully proven only twenty years ago. While most calculations will be simple enough to do by hand, we will sometimes use the computer to see how the fundamental ideas can be applied to the huge numbers needed for modern applications.

Course Prerequisite A strong background in precalculus and above, as well as a desire to do rigorous mathematics and proofs.

Analyze basic economic information. Apply decision making to personal financial choices (money management planning, maintenance, and analysis) at various stages of their lives. Evaluate the sources and resources of financial systems that are available to them. Evaluate credit sources, as well as credit rights and responsibilities, and be able to apply a decision-making process to weight costs and benefits involved with credit. Evaluate investments and create a plan for the future.

Race & Society Age 14-17 | $1,000 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview What is race? Is it something we’re born with? Is it an idea that society imposes on us? An identity we perform? A privilege we benefit from? Does our own culture’s conception of race mirror those found in other parts of the world? These are just a few of the questions that students in this course will explore together as they approach the concept of race as a social construct that shapes and is shaped by societies and cultures in very real ways. Throughout the course students will learn about the changing relationship between race and society across time and across cultures. Engaging with readings, films, and speakers from a variety of academic fields (history, sociology, anthropology, literature) students will explore, research, reflect on and discuss the complex set of relationships governing race and society.

Spanish Language Through Culture I Age 14-17 | $1,200 June 14 – July 30, 2021 Course Overview This intensive summer course will give students with no prior exposure to Spanish the vocabulary, grammatical background and communicative skills that they need to jump into Spanish 2 at their schools. Students will master greetings and introductions, daily routines, likes and dislikes, numbers, telling time, question formation and other fundamental communicative functions.

Students will learn to communicate using common regular and irregular verbs in the present tense and the immediate future with ir. Students will also develop a broad-based vocabulary related to common settings including school and the classroom, home and family life and others. The primary focus of the course will be to develop novice interpersonal and presentational speaking and comprehension skills. Through synchronous and asynchronous interactions with classmates and instructors, students will practice their budding language skills in a flexible and playful online environment. This course will replicate what is typically a yearlong course, so students should expect to dedicate 15-20 hours per week during the 7-week summer session.
