My Research for my Self Directed Project
My Project will be focused on creating a body of work which showcases different small businesess in brighton such as Restaurants, Tattoo Parlors, Barbers, Clothing shops. I will go to these paces and conduct interviews with the workers, Take Portrait pictures, Take photos of the intricacies in these businesses and try to represent their atmosphere in a abstract way using different mediums. Ideally I would like to Combine these studies into a book/magazine.
For My research I have been looking at Lifestyle Magazines/Books and Alternative Photography. I will begin by talking about my research into the magazines and books.
What is a Lifestyle Magazine/book ?
lifestyle magazines are those which cater to a general readership of adults with a focus on topics such as entertainment, fashion, health and beauty, well-being, and leisure.
Eye_C Magazine
eye_C magazine is an online platform and a physical publication based in Europe and Tokyo focusing on providing coverage and news on fashion and culture through articles and different forms of original content such as editorials, features and interviews.
Popeye Magazine
Popeye is a monthly fashion and men's magazine based in Tokyo, Japan. It is one of the oldest magazines featuring articles about men's fashion. Its tagline is "Magazine for City Boys".
I really like the combination of mediums used in this magazine. The mix of illustrations and photography are a nice contrast
Somesuch Stories
Somesuch stories is a book I found in Soho house in Berlin. The book is composed of short stories and poems along size photography, illustrations and graphic design. I love the combination of techniques and the use of alternative spacing within the text to add to the stories. The book has also been made that the Spine wasnt glued down so you can see how the book was bound which I really like.
Artist’s Recipes
“Artists’ recipes” casts a glance at the art and cuisine of 81 no less famous artists such as Alicja Kwade, Tobias Rehberger, Marina Abramović and Jan de Cock. It is not only a collection of recipes but also combines the cuisine with their art, collages, paintings and photographs
Sherman’s “salad for presidents” is not only a book of tips on growing your vegetables but a book of household recipes. Julia Sherman has a Masters degree in fine art and an art gallery in LA.
Julia Sherman is an artist, photographer, and the creator of Salad for President. Alongside her culinary work, Sherman is an exhibiting mixed-media artist.

Alternative Photography Processes
Alternative Photography printing is when artists use unusual techniques to create a print of an image. Often focussing on the transfer of light through an image to burn it onto a surface or using a solution to create a chemical reaction to transfer the image.
For example anthotype is printed in the sun for a few days or several weeks. The anthotype print develops as the rays of the sun destroys the color of the pigment, bleaching the print. Each and every emulsion will need a different exposure time. Some emulsions need only a few hours to change color, some a few weeks.
1. Mix a two part solution
2. Paint solution onto surface
3. Wait to dry
4. Place negative on surface and leave in the sun or UV lamp
5. Wait
6. Wash surface to remove unexposed solution
7. Leave to dry
Cyanotype Printing
Edd Carr
Edd Carr is a Researcher and Alternative process Photographer based in Leeds. He works a lot with Cyanotype Ink to create animations and films. He has done music videos and worked with big brands like Adidas.
Percy Waters
Born in 1888 in a small town in Alabama, Percy Waters came in contact with tattooing in an early age. Circus groups with tattooed performers arrived in town and introduced a young Waters to this buzzing new world. He started tattooing locals and friends.
Waters’ tattoo style consists of traditional early 20th century designs. Still today artists all over the world use and redraw his flash collection. Sailing ships, good luck symbols, portraits of exotic ladies as well as many animals. Intertwine in battle or simply on their own: panthers, snakes, eagles and dragons. He became widely famous for tattooing famous circus performers like Egbertus Jan ‘Dutch’ Berghege and others, who got bodysuits tattoos that where way ahead of their time.
I was inspired by Percy Waters when I saw his old flash sheet blueprints. These reminded me of Cyanotype printing. This got me thinking about cyanotyping some traditional Tattoo flash and Looking at Tattoo parlours.
Anne-Mette Kelter Weinkouff
Anne-Mette Kelter Weinkouff is a Danish Photographer living in Galway (Ireland). She has recently started experimenting with alternative printing techniques for her work.
Here are some Emulsion lifts. Emulsion lifting is when the image is removed from the photo paper and left to float in the emulsion. It is then lifted off the emulsion with another piece of material. In this case Kelter uses these little dresses she has made using fabrics and then displayed them on paper.
Peter Sutherland
Peter Sutherland (b. 1976 Ann Arbor, MI). has lived and worked in NYC since 1998. He works mainly with photography, exploring the boundaries of industry and nature.
Game: Game is a photography book looking at the Chinatown Soccer Club, NYC, 2003 – 2006. Sutherland focused on the people and the sorroundings of the game. He said “Each and every one tells a small story of an individual that is always embedded in a more extended game, whether it’s a soccer team or a family”
Joel Holland is an illustrator / hand letterer based in New York City. His award winning work has been featured in numerous publications, campaigns and magazines and products around the world.
Joel holland is an illlustrator from new york who started drawing his local shop fronts during covid to convey the sense of community in his area. These were the little things that he missed
