GRANDMOTHER Uganda's Slums Over 2.5 million people live in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. Two thirds live in slum areas, and the number will continue to grow as more people from rural areas are drawn to the cities. Some residents come from neighboring countries during times of political unrest and violence, looking for a safe place to live. This adds to the problems with sanitation and overcrowding, increasing the likelihood of disease and poverty. Bwaise, Kampala, Uganda

VISION Working towards sustainable development for marginalized children and youth so they can become self suďŹƒcient in time 1

A Grandmother's Story I met a grandmother who lives with her grandchildren and seven adopted children in the slums of Nabweru road in Uganda. Thousands of children living in the slums are orphans, having lost their parents to diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. Life is hard, and this lady is among many without clean drinking water, healthcare, electricity and a sewage system. A Journey Home This grandmother’s journey to the slums in Nabweru began when her father left her mother, and re-married in Gulu. As a young girl, she was forced to marry a man much older than herself. So she ran away, back to Uganda, where she is today. She dreams of being independent and earning money for herself and her family; she dreams of her grandchildren being able to study abroad and leading a prosperous life. She doesn’t work anymore because of her age, so she decided to collaborate with the Happy Angels to teach the grandchildren music. She has a Mission maximum of 15 children of the Happy Believing that children Angels. She is very happy that she can help the Happy Angels prepare a meal for the and youth have a right children, with God’s love and support. She is to education, equality, a tailor by profession, but because she has respect and no sewing machine, people can’t employ participation in her. Also, because of her age people just take her for granted. She says if God would at community development least grant her a sewing machine, she can activities teach the young, uneducated children at Happy Angels. She would also be able to help Edrine in terms of feeding and earning more each month. This is her dream and what she can do for Edrine. Here’s a photo of when she was still young. The grandchildren who don't go to school, but still play around the area where she lives. Now she spends every day making mats, which she sells for 5000shs ($1.39) each, but she can no longer buy fiber to make the mats. She used to buy fiber for 400000shs ($111.27) and make profits of 250000shs ($69.54), but then everything fell apart and now she has her grand children pick up fiber from different rubbish pits.

I am Allan Kawalya, Manager of the Happy Angels Youth Brass Band under the direction of Edrine Wasswa, who has organized our group and is teaching us leadership skills. The greatest act of leadership is what happens in your absence. If everything you have done died with you then you are a failure. True leadership is measured by what happens after you have died. This is why true leaders shouldn't and don't invest in buildings, they should and do invest in people. Because success without a successor is failure. So mentoring is the greatest of leadership. Who are you mentoring to take up your place? What happens to your church, organisation, family, business, if you die today to road accident? Identify your successors today, mentor them, train them. So what happens in your absence is your legacy. Make yourself unnecessary now to see your legacy!
