PROJECT SCOPE & DESIGN STATEMENT
‘Pop’ is a multi-sensory pop-up exhibition designed in response to the concerning poor menstrual health literacy of young and adolescent women in Australia. The exhibition is free and open to all with the intention to educate, empower and engage its visitors. Combining public art, craftivism and temporary architecture, ‘POP’ also doubles as a promotional event to celebrate and raise awareness for menstruation and education during the month of International Women’s Day (March 8th). The pop-up boasts a themed café and merchandise shop, as well as the immersive exhibition featuring original craft, and artwork such as paintings, installations and posters and more.
FINAL OUTCOMES DOCUMENT
This collection of work combines the final outcomes from the branding, architecture and art explorations completed during the research project. The outcomes come together to tell the story of the POP exhibition with some additional images and text that reveal some of the process involved leading to the final outcomes.
Details of each piece are documented in the thesis submission.

In this view the slime and playdough interaction table can be seen which faces a glass wall facing the entrance. Example posters created are displayed on either side of the bespoke dislay stand and uterus flags are displayed on the back wall. The entrance to the next space can also be seen.
Exhibition Items: Uterus Flags and Craftivism
The uterus flags created by myself and others in the community have their own space along the wall, a display that could grow with more contributions from others in the future.
Exhibition Items:
Period Stain Quilt
Using an acylic paintiing technique of folding sheets of paper together, prints were created and digitally touched up. After making a digital colalge, the final pattern was transformed into a quilt design.
Exhibition Space: Period Stain Quilt Bed
The quilt design on the bed forms one part of the exhibit and reflects a bedroom environment. The white rug underneath the bed supports the ideas of stains and the fear of showing period stains in public.
Exhibition Space: Period Product Wall
Shopping wall lined with period products packages as well as empty shopping cart represents another place where individuals who mesntruate experience menstrual encounters.
Exhibition Space: Story Sharing Platform
To encourage discourse and openness surrounding periods, this exhibition piece encourages people to share their thoughts, experiences and opinions through the touch screen display. The image below shows the work in progress of the displays within the exhibition interior. The text inputted by visitors as well as existing collected stories will show on the spherical LED display screen suspended from the ceiling in the centre of the display stands.
Exhibition Space: Photobooth
Photo/selfie booths are a trendy way to engage visitors and allow them to document their experience. By providing a photo booth visitors are encouraged to enjoy their trip, remember it and also share the moment on social media or show others who may be interested visiting the exhibition. While the entire exhibition has plenty of chances to take photos against an interesting backdrop, a photo booth provides visitors with a physical moment to keep and carry with them.
