Design Statements Wan Chai is one of the earliest developed district of Hong Kong which has a very long

history and a very vintage atmosphere, you can see tram and old buildings around the site. Trying to keep this atmosphere is one of my design concepts Responding to the design philosophy of visvim is also the concept of this project.

"Visvim clothing is in equal parts functional and stylish: old shapes that appear familiar on the surface have been repurposed and made relevant for the contemporary world.� said Hiroki Nakamura, the founder of VISVIM. After careful consideration of different possibilities are concludeed that simple massing and playing with details is the keys to a harmony for the site and the brand.

MASSING DESIGN

It is located at a public housing area. Public housing is one of an representation of Hong Kong itself, as well as its history. Therefore, I take public housing buildings as a reference in considering building form of this project, also as a respect to site context.

The concept massing model of Hostel is an intersection of rectangular blocks, Starting with 40% site coverage and extruding it, then subtracting different blocks to create an interesting form and to accomodate different function.

The fins are attached in order to emphasize block form and divide the "blocks", also as a passive design to make a hostel more energy efficient.

west elevation

The selection of material is consistent with the earth tone colour scheme, which is very low key. Also, to make a dialogue between natural materials and artifical materials, i used two types of concrete and two types of tiles to create the contrast in textures.

COMMON SPACE DESIGN Grand lobby is the largest double volume common space in this hostel,the second floor will be a dinning hall. Maximizing the natural sunlight creates interesting pictures throungh curtain walls and skylight openings at lobby.

Internal Court adopt the same design with Grand lobby. It is a double volume space. The natural sunlight is maximized to create beautiful pictures of light and shadow through big voids and fins at internal common spaces instead of using interior decoration, as well as to create a comfortable atmoshpere to users.

Instructor: Jeff Kan Designed by Dickson (54820401) Unlike a crowded commercial district like Mong Kok or Causeway Bay, Shek Kep Mei is a very peaceful community which only contains the facilities of basic needs for residents, there are many public housing complex and school.

Buildings are in common built form like rectangular shape or cruciform shape, and most of them are medium-rise building.

Putting a hostel in a residential area will bring impacts to Shek Kep Mei unavoidably, in order to minimize the visual impacts, site context is the crucial element I considered. And I will not create complex building forms.

As it is located at a public housing area.
