September 2020 Monthly Competition
Our sincere thanks to everyone who entered our Septembercompetition with a theme of ‘The Wonder & Intrigue of Abstract’’. Many thanks too, to Iñaki Hernández-Lasa FRPS, who selected his favourites from all the submissions. Congratulations to Iñaki’s first placed choice: ‘’Shape of Workstation’ by Jon Lipinski
Iùaki’s Comments: A stunning image on many levels. Terrific dynamism portrayed through the composition by those strong parallel curves. Chromatically, very engaging by representing complimentary colours and that abstraction with some movement which adds to the image overall. Very good processing with the right touch of saturation and vibrancy. It closely adheres to the subject matter of the competition.
Shape of Workstation by Jon Lipinski
Iñaki’s Comments Wonderful explosion of colour, vibrant, bold, dynamic. A very eye catching centre from which all the elements stem out and a fantastic processing throughout – right amount of saturation and vibrancy.
Symmetrical Patterns by Shirley Johnson
Iñaki’s Comments: Fabulous detail, very well seen with excellent tonal range and control of darker and brighter areas. Even though it is an old iron with corroded patterns the image still conveys tranquillity and power at the same time. Excellent details on the shadows and very good post processing with the right amount of vibrancy, saturation and sharpening.
‘Any Old Iron’ number 1 by Ken Skehan ARPS
Iùaki’s Comments: Terrific abstract patterns which communicate effectively what is expressed in the title. Despite the vibrancy of the movement the image conveys a very pleasant chromatic flow throughout all parts of the image. Excellently seen, captured and processed. Fabulous purples, greens, browns and yellows displayed with great subtlety.
Beech Storm by Michael Krier ARPS
Iùaki’s Comments: A truly captivating image with circular patterns and adequate complimentary colours that really work well and give strength and vibrancy to the image. Very eye catching with strong composition.
Jewels of Diffraction by Rachel Domleo
Iñaki’s Comments: Less is more – dynamic, bold, enigmatic, vibrant with beautiful colours and yet a hint of what goes behind in the background with those squares, and those light hints of cyan/green on the bottom right part of the image. A very enigmatic but yet strong composition.
Saccade by Geoff Wood
Iñaki’s Comments: Concept very well executed. For a moment this brought me back to my younger years when I was an avid fan of Escher’s jigsaws. Even though it’s a different subject matter the tonality and abstraction of this image reminded me of it (see image below). Beautiful combination of abstract shapes and forms with a very uniform tonality throughout. Good flow and rhythm in the image with intriguing patterns.

Abstract Rain by Rachel Domleo
Iùaki’s Comments: Fabulous details with very similar circular patterns from which near-parallel lines emerge. I was also intrigued by the V shaped formed on the bottom left of the image and by the 2 circles – it looks as if they form a face with the reddish line creating what looks like a smile. A tiny bit of vibrancy could have emphasised the image a bit more but overall a very pleasing image, well captured.
Jellyface by Caroline Briggs
Iùaki’s Comments: Beautiful patterns and great composition with a diagonals creating great flow and rhythm in the image. The dynamism is very well captured in this composition through these diagonals. Terrific light with glints of stronger rays on the bottom right which add to the overall chromatic coherence of the image.
