Newsletter for Photographers in the Yorkshire Region March 2016 YORKSHIRE

Notes from your RO… For some the anticipation of a white winter is a photographers dream, for others it’s a nightmare, but our winter has’t been white - just very wet. Although the publishers have now rectified their posting error, it was a shame that December 2015 Newsletter went astray. I do hope those who received the Central Region Newsletter enjoyed the change, but importantly also appreciate the work of our Regional Newsletter Editor, Brian, does in bringing something of interest to your door. As the website shows, much is already planned for the first part of 2016 with events and Advisory Days, and the ever growing Café sessions. The relaxed social atmosphere of the Café sessions will now incorporate Self Help Groups, aimed at giving support for those who are preparing for an Advisory Day, again very informal, but focused on your work. We still need a Regional Committee Secretary. If you or anyone you know of may like to be involved please contact me.

Got something interesting happening?

Harrogate International Visual Arts Expo 2015 (HIVE) Royal Photographic Society Members of the Yorkshire Region were invited to exhibit their work at the Harrogate International Centre, Kings Road, Harrogate for the 21st and 22nd November weekend ArtExpo. Mary Crowther ARPS, Regional Organiser, had pulled together a small group of helpers to hang our exhibits. After first checking that the hanging space was straight, the installation began, under Mary’s watchful eye. Exhibits by Nigel Tooby FRPS were given centre stage….

…and the exhibiting photographers and artists, along with a range of invited friends and guests, attended the ‘pre-view launch’ that evening.

Please let us know and we’ll try to include it in a future Newsletter, or write your own report and email it in.

Know of any photography exhibitions near you? Please let us have venues, dates, websites, contact details, etc and we’ll try to visit and report back in the Newsletter.

Some of Nigel’s thought provoking work is currently on display at Fenton House, Bath. The image shown on the right was one exhibit submitted by Brian Crossland LRPS. The photograph of a Rolleicord twin lens reflex camera and light meter has been described by viewers as being very effectively illuminated to bring out all the detail. The secret to achieving such lighting for this award winning record shot was to place them on three white mount-card cutouts on the conservatory window sill out of direct sunlight. As usual, simple can be best.

Full details can be obtained at the website letour.yorkshire.com including the three stages: Friday 29th April - 185km from Beverley to Settle Saturday 30th April - 135.5km from Otley to Doncaster Sunday 1st May - 198km from Middlesbrough to Scarborough So, if you needed a good excuse to get out there and take photographs of Giggleswick, Beverley Minster, Grassington, the liquorice capital of Pontefract, Conisbrough’s rebuilt castle, Doncaster Racecourse, Thirsk's Market Square, Whitby Abbey, Robin Hood’s Bay or Scarborough - and hundreds of other places along the route, get on your bike. At least one camera clubs or photographic society previously created very popular exhibitions of ‘le tour through our town’ using the photographs they had taken, standing along the route in their locality - so if you do the same, please let us know, send in samples, give us links to your images (some of which we could include in the ISSUU version) and let’s show everyone the quality of your photographs and our region, then everyone will see why we say ‘if it isn’t in Yorkshire, it’s not worth looking at’ - or was that because of the price of petrol? Please send details of your events and/or images or links to them to RPS.Yorkshire.News@gmail.com

The 37th Frame

Newsletter now on ISSUU The RPS has recently provided access to www.issuu.com (pronounced ‘issue’) to ensure an alternative method of getting the Newsletter out to members. As with the RPS Journal, many prefer a printed version, some like electronic copies. I do agree, though, that a few years worth of electronic Journals and Newsletters takes up very little space at home - but I don’t know of anyone who likes to take their tablet into the bath for a good soak and a read. Also available at www.issuu.com is a vast array of other publications, including many photographic journals and magazines. On the opening page, search for RPS Yorkshire Newsletter and it appears, with several other RPS newsletters from other regions and SIG Journals. As the Yorkshire Newsletter now appears to have settled down to a three monthly production, appearing early March, June, September and December we are still limited to 4 pages in print, due to the cost, but there is almost no limit to size and content of the electronic version through ISSUU, so why not take some photographs within our region to show to the rest of the world? A few may get squeezed into the print version, but many others can be included on-line. Any images we receive are accepted on the assumption that copyright and any other permissions have been granted. Images, details and stories to RPS.Yorkshire.News@gmail.com

The last bit, squeezed in at the end. When using 36 exposure films, it was expected that a Yorkshireman would manage to get at least one more frame out of the film.
