Editorial I am sure I am not the only one who finds autumn an inspiring and productive time for landscape photography, so it is great to see that we have a field trip planned for most weekends until the end of October.

This month's Favourite Places are Callanish, on the Isle of Lewis, courtesy of Jan Harris, and North Wales by Steve Cheetham. There were no new submissions for Featured Images page this month. I have been able to include more from Jan and Steve, and an image from Tim Jennings from last month, but it would be good to see more members contributing.

The Landscape Group is featured in this month's RPS Journal. My thanks to those who agreed their photos could be used and congratulations to Liz Akers, Dorcas Eatch and Steve Cheetham, whose images were chosen by the Journal's editorial team.

As I mentioned earlier, autumn is a great time for photography. I am lucky enough to be spending a couple of weeks in Yellowstone National Park, so the next newsletter will not be out until the middle of October.

NEWS ROUND UP National Geographic Winners Announced The travel magazine National Geographic has announced the winners of its 2016 Travel Photographer of the Year competition. The competition was open to photographers worldwide and attracted more than 10,000 entries.

Weather Watch The winners of the 2016 Weather Photographer of the Year competition, organised by the Royal Meteorological Society and the RPS, will be announced on 10th September.

Short-listed images, from more than 800 submitted, can be viewed here. The 2017 call for entries will be made early next year.

USA Landscape Photographer of the Year If you have been to the USA in recent years, you might be interested in entering the USA Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. Several British visitors to the USA have been successful in the competition - which is now in its third year including Nicholas Hill from Kent who won the Black and White category in 2014.

The closing date is 15th September, so you do need to be quick! For more details go the USALPOTY website.

Another competition with awards too be announced shortly is the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year. These will be announced on 15th September, with winning entries on show at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich from 17th September.

MY FAVOURITE PLACE Callanish

by Jan Harris CPAGB You mentioned going to the Outer Hebrides in the newsletter; one of my favourite places is Callanish.

Callanish has lovely stones with great texture and has a good position surrounded by mountains and lochs. The stones themselves can be hard to compose - a small shift in position can cause an overlap - but the effort is worth it!

It is possible to get good images at any time of day, although sometimes you have to wait a while to get the stones free of visitors.

MY FAVOURITE PLACE North Wales

by Steve Cheetham LRPS One of my favourite photography places is North Wales.

I think the appeal is to do with the range of scenery that is available in a relatively small area.

When we visit, we base ourselves near Bangor at a great hotel called the Abbeyfield (fantastic food and great value!). Staying near Bangor gives easy access south to Snowdonia with its spectacular mountains, lakes and waterfalls, and north to Anglesey, with its fabulous beaches, lighthouses and churches.

I have included a few of my favourite images captured on several trips over the last year or so. Some are of ‘classic’ locations and some of a few less well known ones.

What's On

A selection of exhibitions & events which may be of interest to landscape group members

Exhibitions Fox Talbot: Dawn of the Photograph An exhibition exploring the life and career of Henry Fox Talbot, 'the father of photography'. Showing at the Science Museum in London until 11th September.

Noble Prospects: Capability Brown and the Yorkshire Landscape A celebration of the work of designer Lancelot Capability Brown in Yorkshire, with an exhibition of paintings, drawings and manuscripts. In addition, a new film by Simon Warner that depicts a group of Capability Brown’s Yorkshire landscapes as they are today. On show at the Mercer Gallery, Harrogate from 25th June to 11th September.

Painting With Light: Art and Photography from the Pre-Raphaelites to the Modern Age A major exhibition exploring the relationship between early photography and British Art. Showing at Tate Britain until 25th September.

The Great North Art Show Features 300 artworks by 50 of the UK’s finest contemporary painters, sculptors, printmakers and photographers, all displayed in the fabulous setting of Ripon Cathedral. From 3rd to 25th September.

Himmelstrasse At first glance, Brian Griffin’s series of abandoned railway tracks in Poland may look innocuous, but we soon realise the sinister origins of the subject matter. Himmelstrasse means Heaven Street transporting millions to their deaths in the concentration camps. On show at the RPS's Magic Gallery, Charing Cross until 30th September.

Edward Burtynsky - Salt Pans/Essential Elements Images from Salt Pans and from his earlier projects at London's Flowers Gallery, from 16th September until 29th October. The exhibition coincides with the publication of a major new monograph, Edward Burtynsky: Essential Elements Wildlife Photographer of the Year The exhibition, on tour from the Natural History Museum, is on show at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, from 16th September until 19th February 2017.

Joe Cornish Gallery, Northallerton The On Landscape Room is currently showing work

by Colin Bell, Nigel Morton, Paul Mitchell, Peter Hyde and Stephen Barnett. Other photographers showing include Lizzie Shepherd, Anni Vassallo, Mike Caine, Robin Sinton and, of course, Joe Cornish.

Conferences, Fairs and Festivals A Meeting of Minds 2016 18th - 20th November, Rheged Centre, Cumbria Organised by online magazine On Landscape, this year's speakers include John Blakemore, Charles Cramer, Mark Littlejohn, Simon Norfolk and more.

Photomonth A celebration of photography in galleries across East London, from 1st October to 30th November.

Digital Splash Equipment, advice and guest speakers at the Liverpool Echo Arena on the weekend of 15th & 16th October.

The Photography Show The UK's largest photography show returns to the NEC, Birmingham from 18th to 21st March 2017.

Cromer Pier Cromer is renowned for the seaside views and seascapes so why not come to join members of the landscape group on a field trip?

Cornwall - Botallack to Kenidjack (and back again) - Easier option Saturday 17th September Kenidjack Valley The first of two successive Saturdays, this with an easier walking option. Sights to see will include cave mine workings, The Crowns, Botallack Mine and Arsenic Works, Wheal Owles, dramatic sea cliffs, Kenidjack Head, views over Cape Cornwall, mine workings at Kenidjack Valley and a view of The Scilly Isles of clear.

Liverpool and Crosby Field Trip Saturday 15th October

Spend the morning photographing the blend of architectural styles in and around the city centre.

Then, weather permitting, relocate to visit Anthony Gormley's renowned Another Place, an installation of 100 life-sized statues at Crosby Beach.

Capture the Lake District in Autumnal colours Saturday 22nd October Elterwater The North West Region is again running its successful autumn trip to the magnificent Langdale valley in the Lake District; a trip that will be of interest to many members of the Landscape Group.

Pembrokeshire Weekend 29th/30th October Haverfordwest Saturday morning will start at Marloes Sands. After lunch, we will move on to Broad Haven or, if the group prefers, Wooltack Point with views to Skomer and Skokholm. On Sunday we will go to Solva and Mathry. See here for more details.

Ullswater, Aira Force & Borrowdale Thursday 17th November Aira Force car park

Wallingford, Oxfordshire This weekend has been organised by award-winning wine writer and Travel Group member Andrew Barrow. Andrew is also a member of the Landscape Group and would like to extend the invitation to our members.

Walk through Aira Beck on to Gowbarrow and then the top of Yew Crag; visit Aira Force with various falls, rocks and rapids. After lunch move on to the Bowder Stone car park in Borrowdale to visit either Grange Crags, with sunset opportunities towards Derwentwater and Skiddaw, or King's How. See here for details.
