through the heads. A glamour day morning, not a cloud in the sky and a 10-12knot NW’ly, enough to get the reefing points into the main sail and get out code 00 onto its furler. With these conditions and knowing the race’s first day’s forecast, we did discuss, if only briefly, getting a head start on the fleet.

Boxing Day, Race Day, a day I had been looking forward to for almost a year. It can only best be described as organised chaos. With literally hundreds or people moving around the club, determined looking yachties marching up and down the docks, friends and families standing around almost sinking floating pontoons. Lines for the bag drops to get excess luggage to Hobart, lines for breakfast and coffee and lines for the ablution blocks as crews take their last opportunity to, well let’s say this was the lightest they were going to feel for 3 or 4 days (thanks Phil Beals for the tip about the upstairs toilet).

Honestly, I have never seen so many people come to see the start of an (amateur) ocean race or for that matter any yacht race.

masses of yachts taking part, spectator boats and helicopters.

However taking all this in was cut short when our radio stopped working, no radio check no start. Quickly turning about face and headed back to CYC whilst Trevor was on the phone with Jonathon Clough working through the issue. The mood on deck became quiet as the reality of us having to miss the start started to set in.

The conversation turned to “hopefully we can get in get repaired and set off within the 3 hour timeframe” With a crackle the radio sprang back into life just as we reached the top of Rushcutters, we could get our radio check done and we were good to go. Another 180 degree turn and we were back charging towards the start line. Everyone immediately lifted and the excitement resumed.

With three start lines windward to leeward on the course it is fair to say the starting area was hectic, but we chose not to get bunched up at the eastern end of the line and go for clear air towards the middle. Early on we started to doubt our decision, as the disturbed air

Waking up early on Christmas day, alone on the boat, was a different experience. Christmas for me has always been a busy day, especially the last few years with a 2 and 4 year old of my own ensuring the early morning excitement is not missed.

But with Sydney’s offshore scene being so strong, having

the opportunity to quietly wander the jetties checking out a plethora of the latest and greatest racing yachts, normally seen from WA only via yachting mags and websites, was a good start to my Christmas and enough to get me very excited about the race.

With all the crew on OP being from WA we decided that Christmas was best spent on the water, so we went for sail out 02 : 2015

Most recently I have been either helming or on main trim on Just Crusin’, so I gained a lot of enjoyment from being on the boat as a trimmer in these conditions. To Trevor’s credit he is an owner/skipper that is happy for the boat to be pushed. So being able to push the limit on the spinnakers and squeeze out what speed of our 13.5 tonne “flyer” was a lot of fun, and we did so without blowing up a kite.

With as much local racing under our belt as we could muster between boat maintenance and the delivery, Christmas rolled around pretty quickly and I flew into Sydney on Christmas Eve. I quickly found myself parking up at the Cruising Yacht Club’s bar and sharing a beer with some of the other WA crews and local

competitors I haven’t seen for some time (not since Junior Match Racing Days).

Now from what I hear from friends and family the first night was reported to be “man against sea”, boat breaking conditions.

But it is my opinion that this is the media trying to make a story and maintain interest in the event. My take on the first night was upwind sailing akin to a Geraldton Return or Bunbury in a stiff sea breeze. The only difference being the sea state was uncomfortable due to the strong southerly flowing current against the south westerly and later south easterly breeze.

These conditions made for champagne sailing, kite up with the wind steadily building up to 30-35kts, average boat speeds of 12-15kts with a max boat speed of 19 knots achieved near Tasman Island.

We ended up slotting into a great spot at the first mark just ahead of our local rivals Endorfin, which was a relief as we had a few “black jugs” on the line for the race. After the last rounding mark before turning south things settled down on the boat and it quickly became like most ocean races I have

been in, rotating people through positions on the boat and gearing up for the night ahead.

I won’t bore you with the hour by hour of the entire race, but after the first night the headwinds settled down and by midday had turned behind us, and it pretty well stayed there for the next 2 days.

An opportunity to jump onto a boat for the 70th Sydney to Hobart race was an opportunity I was not going to pass up. So at the last Geographe Bay Race Week when Geoff Bishop (UK Sailmakers) said he could get me a ride for the upcoming Hobart on Trevor Taylor’s, Marten 49, Optimus Prime (OP), my response was always going to be, where do I sign!

The journey to Hobart started around six months prior with the Valmadre Series and then the Geraldton Return.

Happened to be the return leg rather than the more leisurely Fremantle –Geraldton Leg, no thanks to the unfortunately timed Barr/Hansen wedding, with the Groom and Father of the Bride ‘yachties’ I expected they would have had more influence over this date, I guess I am underestimating

and shadow from the fleet had a bigger effect than we had hoped but half way up the reach the wind steadied and we made gains on the fleet as the majority of boats were competing for water and the geography causing bigger holes in the wind closer to the eastern shore.

The downwind sailing also gave a good time when on deck as the watch crew took time to take in the sights, with wildlife in the middle of Bass strait being the most interesting. Pods of hundreds of dolphins, sunfish and a shark were a few highlights but the most interesting sight I saw was in the middle of the night.

With the bioluminescence in the water turning any disturbance into a bright green/blue trail in the water, sitting on the side of the boat and watching 5 of 6 of these light trails converging with the boat at a rate of knots was an unusual cause for interest.

One of the boys yelled out “think we’re getting torpedoed”.

But turns out dolphins play at night, we couldn’t see the dolphins due to an early setting moon, but we could follow the long light trails they left with their dorsal fins as they played in the boat’s wake and bow waves.

After a two sail reach from Tasman Island we get the kite back up part way through Storm Bay and again with 25-30kts the boat was flying towards the finish and Lynnath pointed out that we are looking like getting inside the boat’s fastest trip to Hobart in under 3 days.

The spinnaker comes down at the Iron Pot and the notoriously patchy and light Derwent is not living up to its reputation, it is a good fetch up the Derwent. The 4

temperature is warm and wet weather gear begins to peel off.

We are only minutes inside the boat record, but everyone is up and about and can see the finish.

Not to be overdramatic here but the next events were unlike anything I have ever experienced and from conversations with other crew members and other boats unlike anything they have experienced in sailing either.

One of the great things about our sport is that anyone can sail against the best guys in the world.

Whether they are Olympic gold medallists, America’s Cup sailors or round the world legends, if you buy the boat you can sail against them. No matter how much you spend on golf clubs you won’t get to play against Tiger Woods, unless it’s some publicity stunt charity game. Similarly with tennis, cricket or any other professional sport.

Looking up the Derwent we all started to point out what looked to be a white squall. A solid white line marching down towards us from the Tasman Bridge.

Reef 1 in, Main car gets jammed; spreader goes through the main sail, not a terminal tear but bad enough. We cut the webbing to set the car free.

Reef 2 goes in. The squall hits and my last look at the wind instrument I see 53knots.

Others, said they saw gusts nearer to 60 knots just before the chook at the top of the rig blew off.

At this stage we have 5 of the crew holding the main down until the 2nd reef could be completed. During which the sheets where blown off the clew of the number 4. I run forward with bowman Paul Thompson and we struggle to pull it down on deck, because all sails want to do in that wind is go up, not down. We get the 4 on deck and the Storm Jib is up and ready to be attached.

By the time all is said and done, we have secured sails and have the storm jib up, we have lost some ground and about 30 or 40 mins. I have sailed in heavy weather before with winds around a similar strength, in this instance we have known things were going to get rough.

Preparations were able to be made early and whilst not comfortable, with that time to prepare we could manage. This experience on the Derwent however, took everyone by surprise, this was the flat water and it hit with pure speed and aggression no swell or wave state, just wind.

After the squall passed we are quickly back on a number 3

head sail and 1 reef and we start to make our short way towards the finish.

The hooter sounds, we cross the line 30th in a time of 3 days, 25 minutes and 26 seconds. Just outside the boat record, but ultimately a very fast trip to Hobart, just not fast enough thanks to a short but powerful storm.

The lesson I take away from my Hobart experience is that it is not over until it is over.

Just when we thought we had the race licked in the middle of the Derwent River, basically suburbia, Huey showed us that he is still the boss. No matter where I sail now, on the river or in the ocean I’ll always remember that squall and that racing needs to continue until the boat has crossed the line and the sails are down.

After the surreal experience of having all the other crews and Hobartians cheer and clap as we pulled into Constitution Dock, again something I have never experienced in sailing… general public interested in sailing, it was now time for a well-earned rum.

The tales of the frivolity that follow at Customs House, are for another time, so if you catch me or Gus McPhee (Head Trimmer for OP) in the bar, I’m sure we’ll share a story.

For my first Hobart, I am under no illusions that I got a dream run, the unfortunate thing about that is it didn’t scratch my itch. My wife said it best after telling her about my trip, “You’re going to do that race again aren’t you….

Just not next year!”

Lisa is right, I will do that race again and I can only hope with a boat and crew that was as enjoyable to sail with as Optimus Prime.

When ocean racing and a day or so in, there is nothing more guarded than your time in the bunk, so you can imagine the rude shock when we hear the call “time to get up boys”, I look at my watch and they are an hour early. After throwing on my wet weather gear a grumpy Trent hit the deck expecting to have to help with a reef or a sail change. But all of my lethargy disappeared and mood lifted as I looked up and saw the shear granite cliffs at Tasman Island.

A beautiful and majestic sight, one that lifts the spirits gives the feeling that we are now in the home stretch. Conversation turned to a hitting the shower and getting stuck into some rum.

I regard it as a huge privilege, and a great opportunity to be able to jostle on the starting line of the Laser Nationals with the likes of Tom Burton, Matt Wearn and others of the Australian National Team. Tom Burton is currently ranked number one in the world, and is seen as a potential Olympic gold medallist, and that is how it was in Mandurah in the week after Christmas when 160 boats contested the Australian title.

It was a brutal week, with 25 knot winds everyday, and two races per day. I’m sure the young guys at the front of the fleet took it all in their stride, and at the end of the day went back to their accommodation to consume special energy

drinks and eat very healthy meals.

However for the only great grand master (over 65) stupid enough to be sailing with a full rig instead of a radial, it was a test of many aspects of human life. I certainly earned my beer each afternoon, and it was good to sample a different Mandurah restaurant each evening.

It was also satisfying to have one’s judgement endorsed when all the hot shots decided to start at the same end of the line that I’d chosen, and that also sharpened up my ability to get off the line in good shape.

The downside of this is that these young guys just sail away from you on both sides, leaving you floundering in their wake.

The racing was tight at all levels of the fleet, every place was fought for until the last race was completed. Indeed it was so tight amongst us old gits, that a stupid capsize as I tacked for the finishing line of the last race, cost me three places overall. Yes, there was some capsizing, but I take satisfaction

The stagger upwind in the short sharp seas off Mandurah were more than rewarded by the blasts downwind.

The reaches were explosive, frequently reaching terminal velocity, and with salt water being forced into every

orifice, what a buzz. The dead-downwind legs were an adrenalin filled balancing act, trying to keep the hull underneath the rig, a bit like balancing a broom on your hand.

I did all the downwind legs constantly repeating to myself, “just stay upright, and you’ll make places”, and it seemed to work.

Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club ran an excellent regatta, and a huge thanks to all their volunteers who helped us launch and retrieve. I will be back, but please can you turn the fan down a bit next time. n

Also beginning just after Christmas were the Australian 125 Championships in Tumby Bay, South Australia. Club Member Tom Ainge and his crew Kate Jones sailed a great regatta and finished 7th out 24 boats.

On the 2nd of January the Tasar Worlds commenced at Geographe Bay Yacht Club.

A number of RPYC Members were heavily involved in the organisation of this huge event, so congratulations go to them before we even address the on water results. RPYC Members sailed consistently to achieve some steady results. Lloyd Lissiman and Fiona Campbell had a top placing of 10th place in one race and 13th in another, great results in what was a highly competitive fleet.

Final Results: (122 boats) 37th: Tae Think Again, Lloyd Lissiman and Fiona Campbell 77th: Usual Suspect, Ian James and Mike Deans 81st: Plan-B, Bill Quinn and Lesley Bazley 88th: Butterfly Effect, Kate Best and Geoff Munt 104th: Yes Boss, Philip Blaxill and James Blaxill 105th: Pulp Fiction, Andrew Waldby and Vera Waldby 112th: Bigger Onda, Giorgio Martelli and Alvaro Proietti Further into the New Year the Optimist Australian Championships were held at Fremantle Sailing Club. The Optimist fleet at RPYC has seen an increase in numbers over the past season. With many sailors having completed Tackers courses over 2013/14, they were excited to learn that they would have the opportunity to compete in an Australian Championship on home waters and worked hard to achieve their goal of being ready and able to compete. A standout performer in the Optimist Open Fleet was Lawson McAullay with a 2nd place in one race. With a mixture of results, our sailors finished as follows:

Final Results: Optimist Open Fleet: Gold: (66 boats) 55th: Man Up, Lawson McAullay Silver: (61 boats) 27th: Big Onda, Roberto Martelli 41st: Wave Rider, Phoebe Blaxill 50th: Kaboom, William McAullay Optimist Intermediate Fleet: Gold: (39 boats) 32nd: Insane, Lachlan Hawkins Silver: (39 boats) 14th: Bad Piggie, Charles Winteringham 15th: Death Lollipop, Lili McAullay 17th: White Rabbit, Meg McAullay 18th: Feather Weight, Kathryn Hawkins Optimist Green Fleet: (15 boats) 8th: Monkey Mania, Adam McAullay The Moth Australian and World Championships took place at Sorrento Sailing Club in Victoria, finishing on the 16th of January.

At the time of going to print, seven races had been completed and Steve Thomas and Andy Fethers were placed 69th and 93rd respectively. Keep an eye on our Facebook page to see how Steve and Andy fared during the regatta.

Capping off a busy few weeks of sailing were the Australian Youth Championships, also held at FSC. After competing with people of all ages at the Laser Nationals, the Youth Championships provided a great opportunity for Harmon and Ethan McAullay to test their skills against similarly sized and ages sailors.

Final Results: Laser Radial Fleet: (44 boats) 33rd: Bounce, Harmon McAullay Laser 4.7 Fleet: (54 boats) 19th: Spike, Ethan McAullay On a slightly different note to these dinghy sailing activities, Terry Posma and his crew members successfully competed in the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and are to be congratulated on achieving 53rd place over the line and 15th in their division.

Congratulations to all Members of the RPYC team, who sailed, volunteered or supported the sailors and volunteers. Well done and thanks to Club Development Officer Chris Goldacre for his efforts in assisting and inspiring the dinghy sailors on their quests to compete in their regattas. n

RPYC Sailors at the National and World Championships While many of us were enjoying a well-deserved break over the Christmas and New Year period, a large contingent of RPYC sailors, volunteers and their supporters were busy at national and international regattas, many of which took place in Western Australia.

First on the agenda following Christmas, the Australian Laser Championships hosted by Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club. The regatta was characterised by strong winds and big seas, providing a challenge to many sailors during the six day event.

John Roberson sailed a very consistent regatta to take the podium position in the Great Grand Masters Fleet.

Halfway through the regatta the Laser Radial fleet was split into Gold and Silver Fleets. Harmon McAullay sailed brilliantly to achieve some top results in the

Silver Fleet, including two firsts, and finished in the top position.

Well done Harmon! A special mention as well to Harmon’s brother Ethan, who sailed very well in his first Laser nationals in the competitive 4.7 fleet and achieved some top 10 places to finish in 15th place overall.

RPYC Members sailed extremely well to finish in a number of podium positions.

Congratulations to Matthew Wearn who battled it out at the top end of the Standard fleet with Australian Sailing Team training partner Tom Burton.

After sharing the first and second placings in all races, Matthew finished in second place, only two points behind Tom. In doing so, Matt also became the under 21 champion for the fourth year in a row.

Reports 15 May 1924 The Hon Secretary reported that Wing Commander SJ Goble and Flight Lieutenant IE McIntyre, aviators, had been received and entertained by the Club on the occasion of their arrival in their seaplane in Perth Water on Sunday afternoon, May 11th. Both desired to convey to the Club their thanks for and appreciation of what had been done for them.

Loan of Siren Newsletter August 1954 We also acknowledge the loan (for 25 years) of a Siren

(mechanical) from Sidney Anderson. This should ensure that no-one crosses the line before the due time without being made aware of it.

Rottnest Landing Charges The Club has paid a fee to the Rottnest Board of Control whereby craft from the Club visiting Rottnest will be exempt from payment of landing charges. As the instructions on this point make special reference to ‘Craft flying the Club Burgee’, Members are advised to make sure they have one.

Commodore’s Message

My editor has been on to me – “I need your New Year’s Message and I need it now!!!” I now know how the Queen must feel each December having to come up with something to say in her New Year’s Message after having had her fill at Christmas.

It’s not easy, but my editor’s remonstrations have prompted a change from snoozing in the hammock listening to cricket to doing something a little more productive.

In addition to being a time for family and celebration (and cricket), the Christmas/New Year period is a time for many of us to sit back, relax and contemplate the year just passed and the year to come. For me, this covers all aspects of life from the small issues like “Did I really need all that pudding and Champagne?!” to the larger issues like “This year I will get my work/life balance right!”

Some of these thoughts come back to the Club.

Looking back over 2014 there have been some noteworthy achievements.

The Summer Sailing Season Opening Day was one of the best we’ve had in my memory.

We were blessed with fabulous weather and Stuart Walton and the Club’s staff had the Club’s premises looking an absolute treat. Good sailing was followed by a sensational party. In all, a very fitting 150th Opening Day. It was also pleasing to see the publication of Sailing on the Swan, our coffee table book celebrating 10

the Club’s first 150 years. Several years ago, General Committee toyed with the idea of having the history of the Club chronicled for the sesquicentenary celebration.

However, the cost quoted for the necessary research and writing was astronomical and could not be justified in the view of General Committee.

Subsequently, the idea morphed into the concept of the coffee table book celebrating 150 years with 150 photographs. After all, what better way to look at the history of the Club than through a series of photographs capturing life at our Club? The task of identifying the photographs was delegated to Jon Readhead, the Club’s archivist. I would like to thank Jon publicly for the effort that he put into this project and congratulate him on a job very well done. The book has been a huge hit with Members.

Recently, the Members approved amendments to the Club’s Constitution dealing with membership categories (discussed in previous editions of In the Wind) paving the way for a higher level of member retention and welcoming additional crew and social members. This is a significant step in maintaining a vibrant and viable Club providing a platform for future growth in membership. The new Constitution will become effective once the necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained which may take a month or so. In the interim, the Club will be taking applications for membership in the new categories in anticipation of the regulatory approvals being obtained.

Looking forward, we have additional celebratory events planned for the Club’s sesquicentenary, notably The Sesquicentenary Cup will be held on the river at the end of January and the Sesquicentenary Ball will be held at Government House in May. The Sesquicentenary Cup will be huge with all major river yacht clubs supporting this handicap start event. I’m hoping for a spinnaker run to the finish with

up to 200 colourful spinnakers converging on the finish line – it should be spectacular.

The Sesquicentenary Ball has proved to be a very popular offering and is presently fully booked. It will be a great celebration – fitting of a 150th birthday party. The Club is waitlisting members who would like to attend but have been unable to secure a seat on a table. Based on experience, as we get closer to the date, some who may have booked may be unable to attend for various reasons opening opportunities for others to attend. So, if you have an interest in attending, please do not be discouraged from registering an interest with Kelly in the office.

to start planning for this now. We get one shot at this recognising that the building realistically will have a life of fifty years or more. The challenge is to come up with an iconic architectural design for an iconic site at Crawley – something that will become a symbol for sailing in Perth.

This will be a major challenge for General Committee to work through over the coming year and beyond. It will be as big as the redevelopment of the marina and has the potential to differentiate RPYC from all other clubs on the Swan – making the Club a focal point for major sailing events in Western Australia. This is a very exciting prospect indeed.

Fellow Members, A big welcome to 2015! I hope this edition of In the Wind finds you well, maybe a few pounds heavier like yours truly…. but it has been the season to be jolly after all. This year is going to be huge around the Club so I trust you are all rested from the holidays and ready to participate in the many activities we have coming up to continue to celebrate our Sesquicentenary Year.

As you would have noticed, the Club has been a hive of activity in the lead up to Christmas with both planned and some unplanned activities taking place. The last Saturday of racing was unfortunately cancelled due to strong winds, however that wasn’t going to stop our carols session from going ahead, with a small but very enthusiastic (something to do with sailing schooners around the bar all afternoon I suspect) choir joining Commodore Gibbs in some Christmas cheer – great fun! I can’t wait until the videos start doing the rounds!

Unfortunately the travel lift wasn’t in such a festive mood, choosing instead to die a painful death just when we needed to get multiple Members’ boats back in the water for use over the holidays.

As I’m sure everyone is by now aware, the proposal for revised Club Membership categories was overwhelmingly supported by Members at the special general meeting before Christmas.

This was a historic day for the Club and I would personally like to thank Members for their support of this General Committee initiative. Creating more affordable membership categories will enable those who perhaps baulked at the cost of full membership to join the Club and enjoy its fantastic facilities and offerings. Indeed, we as Members now need to be encouraging crew, family and friends to take advantage of this new opportunity.

Whilst on this subject, I’d like to share with you part of an email that I received from two Members of Royal Thames Yacht Club who came down to the Club hoping to get a ride at the last twilight of the year. They ended up jumping on for a ride on LP and by all accounts had a great time!

Their feedback on our Club is something that we should all be proud of: “Mike. A big thank you to you and Vanessa for adopting two orphans of the Thursday night “storm” and taking us for such an enjoyable evening in your new boat with all your friends. We were made so welcome, too, at the Club by everybody we met. It was a real privilege to enjoy reciprocal membership with the Royal Perth. I am taking back a number of ideas from our visit to the Club and, if you could spare a moment, I would like to see a copy of your new membership initiative. We are all wrestling with the same recruitment and Club-use problems, particularly at my local Clubs on the Isle of Wight. Will you please let us know when you are coming to the UK,

On the water La Premiere has been busy, between Offshore Races, a couple of Wednesdays, Rotto for leavers with Harry and his mates (yes I was a Tooly) and most recently twilights on the river. Offshore racing has seen good numbers from RPYC this year and a number of podium finishes. Special mention goes to Terry Posma and Jaffa who made the trek east to compete in the Sydney to Hobart which is a huge undertaking in itself just to get to the start line. By the results it looks like they had a good race so well done guys! Good luck to everybody for the remainder of the season, both on the river and offshore.

Happy New Year to All! I trust you all had a fantastic festive season and enjoyed as much time as possible both at the Yacht Club and out on the water enjoying your boats?!

My family and I made our usual pilgrimage to Rottnest for the break and enjoyed a

very relaxing 10 days aboard our boat ten66 socialising with friends, attempting to catch crayfish, fishing and generally enjoying all the Island and boating in WA has to offer.

If you’ve been reading my articles over the past year you will be aware that I’ve had the opportunity to do a number of boating trips this year in NSW, QLD the NT and far North WA and I have to tell you coming back and spending time at Rotto was one of the highlights.

We really are so lucky to have this island just 10 nautical miles off the coast and with the combination of pristine waters that are clean and swimmable (No jelly fish or crocs to worry about!), abundant bay options, great fishing and cray fishing (most years!), fantastic relatively predictable weather and tides we really do have something quite unique and

special that we should never take for granted.

The House Committee of the Club are always striving to improve and change the social offerings at the Club to maximise Member engagement and participation, in this regard as I have mentioned before your feedback in invaluable.

Whilst most of us have busy overindulging over the Christmas and New Year period, not everyone has been sitting idle with strong representation by Members at the various National and in the case of the Tasars, World Titles here in WA. At the time of writing all were still in progress but some strong performances were being shown. Goldie’s cunning plan at the Annexe seems to be coming to fruition!

I’m sure we’ll hear more about their regattas in future editions.

And lastly, some good news for all you Power Boaties out there. We have recently welcomed John Allpike to Regatta Committee as the Power Boat Representative.

John is passionate about his boating and Club involvement and is keen to take the bull by the horns to encourage power participation in Club activities.

Watch this space for some new initiatives coming this year which I hope will be strongly supported by our membership.

Fantastic outcome from the Special General meeting held on the 16th of December The purpose of the meeting was to consider some significant changes to the constitution to broaden the appeal of our Club to those who do not own a boat but wish to sail or socialise with us. We maintained total transparency in publicising the proposal with detailed information packs being posted to all voting Members well ahead of the meeting. Both the Commodore and I had also written a number of articles

Once fully introduced over the next few months these changes will further improve the vibrancy of the Club and allow us to offer all Members improved services.

New Tender Racks – We have installed a number of new tender racks adjacent to the head of B jetty at Crawley.

Straddle Carrier – as many Members will be aware the engine in our straddle carrier suffered a terminal illness just before Christmas. Given that a number of Members with boats on the hardstand wanted to go boating over the holidays and not wishing to be a killjoy we needed a solution. We emptied the Etchells hardstand, got hold of two 250 tonne cranes and with help from stalwart Member Rowan Chick and his boat transporter, craned 15 boats into the water on the Saturday before Christmas.

In order to give boat owners some confidence Challenger was the first boat in, what a sight she made towering above the building! n

In my last report, I mentioned that we would have sailed the “double header” race on 8 November by the time you were reading. The format turned out to be very well received. The racing was hard and fast with the relatively short courses and a strong breeze. Special thanks must go to the volunteers for their efforts on the day. For them it was a long day, especially on the Melville Water East course.

There will be another day of similar format on 7 February, the same weekend as the Mini Series, so RFBYC and SoPYC will be not only starting the races, but doing the finishes as well!

The Sesquicentenary Cup to be held on 31 January should be another huge event on our calendar. Nominations are coming in, but as seems to be sailor’s want, slowly.

Nominations for the Sesquicentenary Cup close on Friday 23 January, which may be after you receive this Newsletter, but even if so, please try to get nominations

for all events that need it in as early as possible to make the task of organisation much easier.

That also includes the nominations for the Algal Bloom race to be held on 14 March. Get yourselves prepared in good time for this as it is a morning start. We had 33 entries last year and this year should attract many more.

Remember it is a consistency race for RPYC and there will not be any racing at the Club that day.

I have written before about the great app that is available

to record track of your race.

Raceqs is a free app that can be downloaded to your iPhone or Android. Below are a couple of screenshots to give you some idea of what information can be shown about your race. Try it out! It is great fun and you may even learn quite a lot about your sailing.

Quite a number of sailors are doing Club Marine Geographe Bay Race Week and I am sure it will be another great regatta.

The report for that will be in the next issue of the Newsletter.

Fair winds!

Our last scheduled sailing day before Christmas was the 20th of December. There was a bit of to-ing and fro-ing about the wind conditions, but our thanks must go to the start team who decided that first hand knowledge was what was needed, so they went out to test the wind. They measured the wind strengths to be 30 knots, gusting to 40 knots.

Consequently sailing was cancelled. However, quite a few people stayed at the Club, and we still had traditional Christmas carols followed by a great rock and roll party led by Commodore Peter Gibbs!

Make the Tackers Programme your starting point. This new activity based method of learning to sail keeps “fun” at the forefront. With colour, games, supplied branded merchandise and action out on the water “TACKERS” has it all.

The three levels from the “TACKERS” programme provide easy paced steps to introduce sailors to the excitement of Club racing.

This will take time and lots of practice so why not join our “Tackers Fleet” on Sunday mornings (most Sundays during the sailing season). These sessions use the “TACKERS” boats sailing between the marina and the shore, right in front of the Club, providing an ideal environment for our younger sailors.

Yikes….it is 2015!! How quickly a year goes past. Right now as this ink meets the paper RPYC Dinghy Division is being proudly represented

by Members at the Tasar World Championships GBSC and The Optimist Australian Championship at FSC. The next few days also sees the start of the Australian Youth Championships at FSC. There will be extensive coverage about the events in this edition.

Over the ‘Festive Break’ there has been some well-contested sailing that our fellow members have been participating in while the rest of us have been loading up on sweets and drinks – quite a few were training too I hear!

At MOFSC Matthew Wearn kept the new National ‘Standard Rig’ Laser Champion honest coming a close fought second place.

John Roberson has maintained his competitive reputation achieving 1st place for Laser Standard Great Grand Master at the same event.

Harmon McAullay came home with 1st place in the Silver Radial Rig Laser in the same event. This was on top of his great performance at RFBYC’s International Classes regatta where he came 4th.

From strength to strength for this young man – Well done Harmon.

The International Classes regatta was well supported by the young sailors with Ethan McAullay taking a 2nd for the Laser 4.7.Lachlan Hawkins and Lili McAullay also had top ten placings for the Optimist Silver fleet.

this year a couple of very large special thanks are required.

Harbour Master Clem Rogers has gone out of his way to be very accommodating and welcoming to the Dinghy Division whilst it was largely basing itself out of the Annexe from the start of the season – thanks Clem. Appreciation is also in Chris Goldacre’s direction for organising the infrastructure required wherever it was needed along with the personnel required. Spirited applause also to the key group of parents - the McAullays, the Winteringhams and the Hawkins. Of course not forgetting all the parents and the participants who made it all worth the effort.

Reports are that everyone has had a great experience at the Annexe, FSC & MOFSC and that there will be hot demand for ocean sailing to get a look in for the next sailing season too which is great news.

In other news from around the Club we are very happy to be able to say we have established a new group. The Laser Youth Squad now has a core group of 8 who are out training regularly. We are eager to see them out racing with the other Laser sailors when they return to Matilda Bay in January and perhaps, just maybe….we might see some of them in the Argonaut Mini Series.

The Mini Series will be held on the first full weekend in February and promises to be as big as last year.

Preparations are in place and we are hopeful for another record number of sailors and plenty of support from volunteers. This year we have had confirmation that our invitation to the Japanese Junior Yacht Club Union has been accepted. They are sending a Laser sailor and five Optimist sailors to compete in the Mini Series which is terrific news and a good indication of early support for the event.

Recently you may have seen some fundraising for the Dinghy Division at the Thursday night Twilight Cruise. The group is raising funds to go towards future competitions abroad (ie Japan) or in national championships. Please see what you can do to help out as we progress this program in the future. The committee is also open to suggestions of how we can raise funds – selling ice-creams seemed to do the trick the other night.

Send them to Coventry Send them to Coventry, said the NOR! So, the fleet of 18 Yachts (across 4 Divisions) headed south on Sunday 9th November. A steady breeze sent us out to the Western Windmill. From there, those yachts that continued further out to sea picked up the better breeze as it swung around: making for a swifter journey to the reef. Hoisting our kites for the downwind leg made for a remarkably pleasant sail.

The breeze became fickle as we entered Challenger Passage and the Division 3 boats in particular, benefited from a shift which allowed them to roar straight down to Red A and then the finish. Graeme Martin’s Sand Crabs Disco showed us all she certainly does not go sideways! Being awarded 1st in Division 3 IRC and 2nd in YAH. In Division 2, Scott Glaskin’s Farr 30, Cougar was 2nd on IRC. The last weekend in November was the Rockingham weekend.

It is really a mini regatta.

The Dolphin Race took us to Rockingham on the Saturday.

After a very warm welcome from the Cruising Yacht Club, Sunday’s racing began with a Windward/Leeward to blow away any residual cobwebs from the night before. This was followed by the Gordon Craig race back to Fremantle.

It was really fantastic to see RPYC well represented in this event, with seven yachts sailing in Divisions 2 and 3. It is so difficult to get crew for two days racing but somehow we managed it! We had great breezes and close racing on both days. Most had some tall tales to tell of playing chicken with a ship in the shipping channel, or some dodgy spinnaker hoists and magnificent wraps!

Congratulations to Just Cruising and her skipper Tony Carter on a 2nd in Division 2 IRC in the Gordon Craig Race. Well done also to Simon Thorvaldson and the Blondie

team on 2nd in Division 3 in the Dolphin Race. It seems that the S&S34 is still a boat to be reckoned with as Huckleberry, sailed by Philip SommervilleRyan was third in Division 3 YAH in the Gordon Craig Race.

In addition, Sand Crab’s Disco showed that her success in the Coventry Reef race was no flash in the pan, by being awarded 3rd in Division 3 IRC.

Above all, it was great to see such a large group of RPYC yachts participating and enjoying the camaraderie of offshore racing.

It has been terribly exciting to monitor the progress of Jaffa as she made her way to Hobart. It has been a long and meticulous preparation, as well as a long journey to the start

line for Terry Posma and his crew. Congratulations Terry on giving RPYC a yacht to track.

Jaffa is the first participant in this iconic race from the Club for several years. She finished 8th in the Corinthian Division, 15th in Division 3 IRC and 20th in ORCi. She was 53rd on line honours, which is almost exactly mid-fleet. n

Etchells Report

Happy new year to all sailors.

Already the season has given our fleet some fantastic racing. Our metropolitan championships has seen 6 races run with the results also contributing towards the World Championships qualifications.

With all races currently counting St Johns Dance is leading with a set of consistent results. The Croc – Michael Manford is running second with Dirk Van DerStruyf on Chilly Bin holding down third place. The series continues throughout the season with the final races not until April.

November saw RPYC host the “Syd Corser Etchells Regatta”.

This annual event recognises and honours the contribution Syd made to develop the Etchells class on the Swan River. This year marks 30 years that the Etchells have been sailing on the Swan, and the 21st running of this prestigious event.

20 Etchells competed in the 2 day event, which, as a wet regatta, saw all boats housed at RPYC overnight. The 7 races provided varying conditions, from very light for the

mornings, to solid sea breezes in the afternoon. Race winners were Brad Sheridan The Croc, Ray Smith St Johns Dance, Peter Chappell 1382 and Peter Ahern No Jacket Required.

both exciting and challenging, but can also be made a lot of fun. In preparation for the nationals I delivered my yacht to Adelaide just before Christmas with my wife and 2 children. We encountered beautiful conditions for driving and the 2700kms disappeared way too quickly. Hopefully the tow for the other crews and the return journey is uneventful for everyone.

Division 2 Report

What a contrast the end of 2014 brought when, compared to the balmy start of the season, the Fremantle Doctor blew with a vengeance and gave us the lively racing that we haven’t seen on Saturdays for a while.

I had a comment from my crew that we were the only boat with our spinnaker up, and shortly afterwards we did a spectacular Chinese gybe and demonstrated a nonrecoverable prawn trawling manoeuvre whilst heading towards the shallows!

The beginning of December saw a very well attended invitation race hosted by SoPYC with 32 yachts competing from three clubs.

Nirimba took top spot with Itinerant second on club handicap, whilst on AMS handicap, the honours went to Itinerant with Big Diamond second. Big Diamond was also fastest on the day. Fifteen boats in the combined fleet now have AMS certificates, with Swagman being the latest boat to get a rating at RPYC. We are planning another measuring day soon

One new innovation for this season was the combined club windward leeward racing. The racing for Division 2 was hosted by RFBYC in Melville Water West with a late afternoon

start meaning the sea breeze was at its best, and the planned two races were successfully completed in just under an hour each.

First and second places were exchanged by Lionheart and Frenzy in both of the races.

The positive response from Division 2 sailors bodes well for the second set of races to be held on the 7th February.

Big Diamond had some well appreciated family time at

Rottnest over the Christmas period with some wonderful snorkelling, surfing and paddling in the various bays around the island. It was the best place to be when the temperatures soared to 39°C. By the time In the Wind hits your post box we will be well into the second half of the season – I’m looking forward to seeing some big Division 2 fleets on the Swan in 2015. n

The Audi Centre trophy on Saturday 13th saw only four boats race in testing conditions, but the racing was tight with only 21 seconds separating 1st and 4th place on handicap. Well done to the skippers and crews of Terra, Capricious Wind, Polly Pam and Deja Vu for toughing it out.

All boats are encouraged to participate in the short course championships which will be held on the mornings of Saturday 17th and 24th January at South of Perth Yacht Club in conjunction with the S80s. Nominations close on 14th January, 2015.

These races provide a great chance to build skills and crew work in readiness for the State championships.

The states are being held at the Fremantle Annexe on the Labour Day long weekend, Saturday 28th February to Monday 2nd March 2015. The championships were closely contested in 2014 and all S97s are encouraged to join in this year. The organisers of the

combined S80 and S97 event are seeking three volunteers for mark laying, one safety boat skipper and a mark boat is required.

If you know of any one that would be able to volunteer their time and assist over the three days, or have access to a mark

laying boat, please let either Ron Meyers (Secretary), John Hughes (President) or Angus McPhee (S97 Class Rep) know. n

We were extremely lucky to have some internationally rated umpiring in Garry Deane who we thank very much for his time and vast experience, and his guidance for our competitor umpires who I am sure learnt heaps about the art of umpiring in general and Team Racing umpiring.

We also had Mikael Lundh one of our new coaches along to do some on water coaching as well as acting as the second umpire. With the able assistance of Graham White on the Mark Boat and Hayden Swanson on the Start Boat the event ran smoothly and all competitors seemed to thoroughly enjoy the morning.

By the time this article is published I suspect we will have started training again for 2015. This year we will be focussing our efforts on a Swan River Team Racing event in May, and then working towards an international event in early 2016.

Since the last article following the Sardinian campaign we have secured the services of Mikael Lundh and Jessica Eastwell as our coaches. Both of these sailors have a vast amount of international racing and coaching experience, and we appreciate all of the effort they are putting in to take RPYC Team Racing from a “let’s see what interest we get” effort to a sustainable development activity that we hope will take us to the next level of performance. I know already that many of the squad members have expressed that they have learnt so much already.

We would also like to thank Steve Thomas on his past coaching efforts to get our very basic skills up to a point where we are at least slightly competitive, and we wish him well in his future sailing goals.

For this version of the Impromptu Cup we had a number of visitors from RFBYC, a trio who had just finished a trip back from Geraldton in the morning and everybody else was very eager to get some good Team Racing underway.

Despite the forecast of no wind, 26 competitors turned up for the briefing at 0830 in the RPYC Dinghy Clubhouse, and started racing just after 0900 in a good 5-8kt breeze, increasing during the morning to about 12kts.

As an alternative to walnuts and choc chips you can use fresh or frozen berries, peanut butter, coconut, cherries or anything else that goes with chocolate.

This season’s low support (mobile participants) and high support (wheelchairs) sailing programs have been fully booked to capacity, with excellent weekly attendance.

There is an extensive waiting list for sailing places, especially by those in wheelchairs requiring hoisting into and out of vessels. This year, an additional keelboat has been added to the high support program, due to the availability of extra volunteers and the addition of an electric outboard to the Sonar “Eric O”. This makes a total of three larger yachts taking high support participants out sailing each week. Hopefully, in the near future, a third personnel hoist will be added to the pontoon, making hoisting times shorter allowing participants more time to enjoy themselves out on the water.

The very active Royal Perth Liberty Fleet will be competing intensely with Sailability President Graeme Martin once again defending his title of Hansa Liberty State Champion. n

THE NEW YEAR BEGINS! Well, the calendar has kicked over and 2015 is underway. There have been some 40 craft away from the Annexe over the period which is pretty much the “norm” and despite there being periods of high winds the weather has been favourable for having an enjoyable Rottnest sojourn.

For the future, plans are afoot I believe for developing further the optimisation of the Annexe as a base for training the members of the Dinghy Division, both young and old in 2015/2016 seasons! It’s good to see the enthusiasm and inspiration of the sailors influencing the environment of the Annexe in such a positive way, long may it continue.

I’m pleased to report that to the best of my knowledge the exercise of the Dinghy Division having the Annexe as a base for the first half of the summer season has proved to be of great benefit. With the sailors having

It’s been brought to my attention the fishing rods in particular are being removed from craft at the Annexe, there is no indication as to who the culprits are, but as cautionary advice please keep any such items well out of the public eye to avoid temptation. Also a few Cray pots have gone astray from the storage area by the main exit, including the I/D buoys attached to them, so they were obviously property of someone else!! At some $200 each this is not an insignificant loss for the rightful owner and a financial gain of substance for the perpetrator! Remember the CCTV cameras cover this area, so watch out we can find you!

The holiday period has continued to go well with regard to waste collection, except that there are some users who still forget that cardboard boxes do need to be flat packed as best a possible and bottles, cans etc. emptied from time to be loose in the bins, we get more in that way! Thanks for supporting the environmental waste management scheme!

A live cross was made by Ed at the start from the media boat we had available to us adjacent to the start line. All I can say is “WOW” what an experience it was to be amongst it all firsthand and soak up the environment, the tension and excitement of the this iconic event. Another year has passed and we are well and truly into our 150th year of celebration. Our Sesquicentennial Pictorial History Book has been available since mid-December. If you have not collected your copy, please call down to the Club and see Elisa at Reception. I would like to thank personally, the large number of members who have rung and sent emails complimenting our 150th Book.

The display will consist of some 70 pieces of memorabilia and photos from our own Archives complimented by items from The State Library of WA.

The occasion was the celebrated “Soldier’s Cup” an annual golf tournament held at most golf clubs at the finish of the war. This particular occasion was held at the posh Karrinyup Country Club. To quote from the personal notes of Bill Lucas, in short the incident took place at the Lake on the 8th hole where most of the golfers stripped off their clothes and waded across the lake or were rowed in a tinny by Bill Lucas and Bill Hawkins. It was noted later that day that neither Lucas nor Hawkins were wet so they were both unceremoniously removed from the dinghy mid lake to swim ashore.
