GHOULS & GAMES A merry, scary time at the Halloween Kid’s Party The 2018 Halloween Kids’ Party was held on Sunday, 21 October at the Banquet Hall. The event saw 80 children registered for the event with most of them showing up in scary costumes to suit the theme. Party Friends were selected once again to organise carnival-type games and activities which included crafting stick spiderwebs, gross fun with slime, bowling mummy pins, bean bag toss and Guess the Candy. The kids were free to roam about and partake an activity of their choosing at any given time. The last item on the agenda that day was the Deadman’s Treasure Hunt.

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD PUZZLE The Library Sub-Committee organised a Cryptic Crossword Workshop on Saturday 6 October 2018. Alas, the response was rather lukewarm. However, the few that attended benefitted from a session that outlined the various types of clues, how to identify them and also how to work the indicator with the fodder to get at the answer that corresponds with the definition.

Edited by Uncle Yap C

E

For RLC 228, you were required to create a clue for HUNTING. Most of the efforts were of the anagram type with Chew Yoke Lim (7906) with his entry of Stalking abnormally thin gnu (7) winning the RM100 F&B voucher.

C

Consolation prizes of RM20 F&B vouchers are awarded for all-correct entries submitted by Dato’ Tan Seng Chee (8961), Maureen Mokhlis (10262), Wong Kok Heng (12035), Tunku Yahya (14189), T.V.Sekhar (15678) & David K.H.Lee (16061). Please collect your vouchers from the Main Library.

N

For RLC 229, solve the puzzle and create a clue for the answer to 18 Down. Please try and think away from the anagram. Place your entries in the box in the Main Library before noon, Friday November 30, 2018. Uncle Yap wishes all readers and solvers a Merry Christmas and hope that peace and universal goodwill will prevail from this day and for evermore and may the New Year of 2019 continue the transformation of our beloved country to better governance, transparency, social justice and fairness for all Malaysians.

Initial analysis (IA): Get the 1st initial solution in R/C/B by OC/OD logic. 1. R5: [4] in B4, B6: 41, R5/B5, OC. Follow 41 up in its T1/T2 territories: No follow - up soln. Do 2nd initial analysis for 2nd initial solution. 2. 2nd Initial analysis: R9: [8] in B7, B8, C8: 82, R9/B9, OC. Follow 82 up in C7, C7: No soln. in 8; but follow 82 up using [682] in B9 and another [68] in B3 yields LS(68) in 2 blank cells in C7/B6 via C7 analysis by LS principle. 3. F. up LS(68), C7: [1] in B9, R1: 13, C7/B3, OC. Use follow-up strategy. 4. R3: [13] in B3; [1] in B1, C5: 14, R3/B2, OC. 5. C4: [14] in B2; [1] in B5, R7: 15, C4/B8, OC.

As there would be 2nd f. up of 13 – 17, we go back to these earlier f. up solns. to deduce their 2nd f. ups, if any. 9. 2nd F. up of 13, R2: [4] in B2, C9, C1: 49, R2/B1, OC. 10. C2: [49] in B1, [4] in B4: 410, C2/B7, OC 11. C2: [9] in B4, R1: 911, C2/B1, OC. 12. R2: [911] in B1, [9] in B2: 912, R2/B3, OC. 13. B6: [912] in C9; [9] in R4: 913, B6/B6, OC. 14. R9: [913] in C8; [9] in C6, C3: 914, R9/ B8, OC. 6.

Resume follow-up of 914 in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Resume 1st cycle of initial analysis/ follow-up analysis. F. up 914 in C4. 15. C4: [914] in B8; [9] in B2; [9] in R4; [913] in R5: 915, C4/B5. Judges’ Comments: Every soln. is deduced in a R/C/B; thus, specify the R/C/B you are analyzing. Every soln. must be deduced by OC/OD logic. Soln. 8 in B9 creates LS(68) in C7/B6 from C7 analysis – this is the only strategic LS required. Prize and Recognition For this Sudoku Challenge, normally up to three (3) entries with the best answers will receive a food voucher worth RM50/- each valid at any food outlet of the Club for a period of 3 months. In addition, up to 5 or more entries will receive a food voucher of RM10/- each as consolation prizes.
