We are here to support you

From your first year right up until 2 years after graduation, you’ll have access to careers appointments, employer events, practice interviews, skills workshops and much more.

Our services are accessible to all students, no matter what degree you are studying or what year you are in.

Whether you are looking for paid work experience, a part-time job, a volunteering opportunity or a graduate job, our team will support you to gain valuable experience, make strong applications and help you think about what you want to do after graduation.

Do I need to have a plan?

We don’t expect you to have a plan for your future, which is why we provide lots of opportunities to discover different career paths during your time with us. For example, we offer sectorthemed weeks throughout the year, where you’ll get to meet former students from the College who work in industries like finance, law, technology, the media, publishing, museums and many more.

You will also be able to attend careers fairs and employer drop-ins, to meet a wide variety of organisations, from the larger ones such as KPMG, The Environment Agency, NHS, BAE and The Telegraph, to smaller companies and start-ups such as Imagen Insights, Kirk Rice and MacInnes Studios.

Our Career Essentials workshops will equip you with the confidence and skills to research future options and apply for work experience and jobs. Designed and delivered by our experienced Careers Consultants, they are a core part of our programme.

Is there any targeted support?

We want all students to reach their potential and for this reason we offer placement opportunities and skills sessions for students who may require additional support. We also work closely with the Disability and Neurodiversity Team to ensure that all students can access our services.

What’s on offer?

121 appointments

A wide range of careers events

Over the course of my second year at university, I was struggling to find a career path that suited me. I reached out to the careers advisors who organised personal 121 meetings with me every week and tailored them to helping me grow and develop my ideas about my future. They also booked me into alumni panel meetings in the subject that I am interested in to talk to professionals in the industry. Thanks to the Careers team’s help I can now say that I have found the career path that I want to go down and have also gained an internship over the summer to gain experience in the sector. I really appreciate the support and guidance from the team. ”

Volunteering Opportunities

Newsletters

The Careers Service sends fortnightly newsletters to all undergraduate and taught postgraduate students during termtime, with links to upcoming events, job opportunities and resources. In addition, you will receive regular emails from your department about what’s on that is most relevant to you.

Volunteering is one of the best extracurricular activities you can take part in at university, whether you want to develop your own skills, try out future career paths, meet like-minded people or make a genuine difference in the local community. Drop into the Volunteering Hub next to the SU shop during termtime to chat to the team, or check out our Volunteering Platform where you can create a profile and search for a range of opportunities.

Building your employability with CVstac

Research shows that there are 12 key skills that help graduates to thrive in the modern workplace. Our exclusive programme called CVstac will help you actively develop each skill throughout your time at university, support you with the evidence to prove you have them, and help you translate these skills into stand-out statements, using language employers will recognise. Before you graduate, the aim is to have developed 12 such statements, one for each skill. This will be your unique personalised employability profile, or CVstac.
