he conversation surrounding mental health has long been seen as taboo: a topic that should be handled privately and not discussed at large. While the stigma is beginning to fade more and more, an aspect that is still being overlooked is men’s mental health. Cultural gender roles tell men they should be strong, show no weakness, and “man

up” when faced with emotional issues. This causes many to hide their feelings, and not seek help in fear of being ostracized. Many men instead attempt to deal with it on their own.

In the United States, men die from suicide at a rate 3.56 times higher than women, with white men alone making up just under 70% of all suicides. This is an issue outside of the US as well. Globally, men commit suicide 4-6 times more frequently than women. Despite this, men seek therapy 60% less than women. These statistics are mounting, however men’s mental health remains essentially undiscussed.

My first experience with depression began in fourth grade, when I

woke up the day after moving into a new apartment and felt all throughout my body that I didn’t want to move. The next day at school, when my friend asked where I was, I tried to explain that I didn’t feel like going.

I was met with one brutally crushing word: “pussy.”

Later, as I began junior year, it came up in discussion when my friend’s mother gave me a ride home and told me that my friend had been going to therapy for a few months. I didn’t think much of it, but when I asked him about it later at a football practice, he became visibly panicked, and shot down the idea of him going at all. He later pulled me aside, and cried to me about how he was scared

how his teammates would react if they found out. I was the first person to know about his therapy. This moment shocked me and really put into perspective how deep the issue of hiding vulnerability could go.

The Royal Banner polled students about men’s mental health. While we didn’t receive enough responses to find reliable statistics on the topic, one response stuck out. The anonymous individual’s response to the question, “Do you feel mental health is a topic you can easily discuss with your friends? Why or why not?” was: “no, cus i’m not gay.” The idea that showing vulnerability is equated to “being gay” is not only homophobic, but a dangerous notion. Men are taught to bottle up their emotions because they should

feel ashamed for having them catalyzes more mental health issues. In the following question on the survey, “Do you think society pressures men into masking their emotions?” another response read: “anyone who lets society influence their emotions is a pussy.”

Again this reinforces how this issue is prevalent in the Fairview community. This anonymous student thinks that this conversation is a joke and therefore uses the sexist term “pussy.” This is not what it means to be a man. Being vulnerable does not make a man more feminine or weak, instead it makes him strong.

Toxic masculinity is a common term found on the internet today, highlighting how society forces men into a box of conforming with traditional male standards. From social

It is time to change the stigma. That men should be free to express their emotions rather than suppress them, and to not only seek help when they need it, but also to check in on those closest to them. Suicide is something that has affected far too many already, and after losing a friend last year, I pledge to no longer wish I did more, but instead to do more.

OVID vaccines are hard to come by. First priority patients have been the elderly and medical staff, and very few people under 18 have managed to receive a vaccine.

But there are a small few Fairview students who got their vaccines early, and are grateful for the opportunity.

Junior Georgia Stewart received her vaccine near the end of January.

She said, “I was really excited because it felt like a historical moment that I was one of the first people to get this crazy wanted vaccine.”

Another student, junior Ariann Aidun, was enthusiastic about getting her first dose of the vaccine.

She said, “I was nervous before mainly just because I don’t like nee-

dles, but I was also scared just because it is so new.”

Both girls received their first round of shots in early 2021, and are planning to get their second doses soon. The reason both students were able to get their vaccines so early is because of their unique workplace.

“I started working in a retirement community right at the beginning of the outbreak, which allowed me early access to the vaccine. While it is a really high risk job and community and I have to be extra careful, all along I knew it was worth it because I was one of the first people to get it,” said Stewart.

ty in Boulder. She works with many high-risk seniors at the facility, which means it was important for her to receive the vaccine in order to keep others safe.

“I work in the highest level of care and it’s scary knowing you could expose any of these people, so it’s a big relief knowing all of us are vaccinated now!” said Stewart.

Even though the experience of getting the vaccine seemed mostly positive, there were some negative side effects for Aidun.

She said, “I had a lot of side effects because I had already had COVID and I was still in my three month period of immunity, so my doctors said that’s why it hit me so hard. My symptoms were achy bones, nausea, and I also felt tired all day.”

But bad side effects were not the only downside of this experience for the girls. Stewart found that she had

coworkers that had some serious concerns about receiving the vaccine.

“Some of my coworkers were nervous [and didn’t end up getting the vaccine] because they were people of color and there is a bad history with that. It’s sad but true,” she said.

In the past, many Black and Latinx people have been targeted and used in dangerous clinical experiments and health policies.

Along with that, the coronavirus vaccine has generated a lot of fear because it is a new vaccine, and there have been serious side effects for some individuals.

Not only was there lots of fear circulating for people of color, but in

the early stages of receiving vaccines, many people got competitive. It was not easy for Stewart to receive the vaccine, and she had to tackle multiple obstacles in order to receive her dose.

She said, “Kind of a funny story, but everyone was pretty greedy about it and originally when it first came out, they told me I couldn’t receive the vaccine because I was too young. I was really furious because it was approved for 16 plus, so I literally emailed our CEO and within two weeks I got vaccinated. I’m usually a pretty shy person, but the vaccine was something I really needed to jump on.”

After receiving the vaccine, both Aidun and Stewart haven’t felt a huge lifestyle change. The vaccine was one step closer to keeping everyone safe, but both girls are still sure to be careful when it comes to the coronavirus.

Aidun said, “I am still just as cautious when going out and seeing friends, but it has eased my parents, as well as the parents of my friends, knowing that I have gotten it.”

Although their lives haven’t changed drastically, the girls are confident that receiving their vaccines is a good omen.

Stewart said, “It feels crazy knowing I’m a part of history and experiencing such an important discovery.

Knowing that I am one step closer to the end of COVID makes me more optimistic that this whole thing will be over.”

F

or students in AP United States History, the end of third quarter would usually mean that the deadline for National History Day is fast approaching. During this national competition, students create massive research projects and progress as they win each level of competition.

However, students in APUSH are not required to participate in NHD this year.

“Without knowing whether we would be in the building or not, without knowing schedules, with all the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, I decided it was not worth attempting,” said APUSH teacher Sean Costello. “I plan on having it again next year.”

Despite the shift in APUSH requirements, some students have still decided to participate in NHD. One such student is junior Emily Zu, who decided to create an exhibit alongside junior Pema Sherpa this year.

“I think we were pretty happy, both of us, knowing that NHD wasn’t happening — but we signed up for APUSH knowing that we were supposed to do NHD and, because we did NHD in middle school, we felt kind of confident going into it with minimal

support,” said Zu. “We thought we’d take the opportunity since not everybody is doing NHD, and we automatically go to regionals.”

Zu and Sherpa have run into challenges undertaking NHD during these unusual circumstances.

“I think that deciding to do NHD when it’s not required, you’re basically saying that you’re going to have to figure out all this stuff by yourself,” said Sherpa. “But it’s really nice because we’ve reached out to our teachers and they’ve been really helpful.”

Another issue has been navigating a group project during the pandemic.

“My mom is really strict with COVID. So it’s kinda hard being like, ‘hey I need to work on NHD,’ and she’s not going to allow me to,” said Zu. “Especially when it’s an exhibit.”

However, the pair has been able to collaborate to make their exhibit a reality, building the poster at Sherpa’s house while ensuring that both their families felt safe.

“We were best friends in middle school, so it’s kinda easy to plan stuff with her and just be honest if there’s a problem or anything,” said Sherpa.

“Deciding to do NHD when it’s not required, you’re basically saying that you’re going to have to figure out all this stuff by yourself”

The project focuses on the court case McDonald’s Corporation. v. Steel & Morris, also known as the McLibel Trial.

Before the trial, two activists — David Morris and Helen Steel — published a leaflet about McDonald’s wrongdoings. The corporation responded with a libel lawsuit, and the activists were given the choice to apologize or go ahead with the law-

tivists in the face of a huge corporation, but the pair find it unlikely that their own eating habits will change as a result of learning about the McLibel lawsuit.

“Although we’re highlighting the negative, I don’t think we’re gonna stop eating McDonald’s,” said Sherpa.

“Unfortunately.”

Besides NHD, Zu and Sherpa have a full course load of advanced classes, including APUSH itself.

“I think people who are taking APUSH right now also have to teach themselves a lot of history, because you can’t really cover all of it in class,” said Sherpa.

This is due to the compression of APUSH, which is already a breakneck course, into two quarters.

“It’s just at a really fast pace,” said Zu. “I have three weeks to learn like, over 90 years of American history, and it’s just like impossible.”

Even still, Zu and Sherpa have been committed to finishing their exhibit.

“Definitely as the deadline is getting closer, we really feel the stress and the pressure,” said Zu. “I think we’re both kind of interested in this topic and we both are very motivated to make a good project and I think that’s what’s keeping us going.”

This is notable, especially as the pandemic continues.

“During this time, I think nobody really has motivation anymore to like, wake up and go to school, and then do extracurricular things — like NHD

for example — and finding the motivation to do that when you don’t really have like, a strict timeline that school provides you, even if you’re going in person,” said Sherpa. “I think it’s just difficult to find motivation, but it’s nice that we’re in a group cause then we can like, facetime each other and yell or scream at each other to get work done.”

A

s vaccinations start to make their way into the Boulder community, many Fairview sports are in their spring seasons, and sports such as swimming, basketball, and wrestling just finished their most interesting season to date. Extensive planning, patience and flexibility were a necessity for Fairview student athletes and coaches this year.

“We’ve persisted even though there’s all these challenges presented to us by the pandemic,” says Makena Englund (12), a varsity girls basketball player.

Englund and the rest of her team started their season three months later than usual, in January instead of October. Their season was condensed to a seven week regular season, and they’ve also had to get used to many other

changes. Playing with masks, limited or no spectators, no team bonding or preseason, and even playing games without a bench to sit on have made the season much more difficult. The freshman girls team had to cancel their season due to midseason exposure, and the rest of the program “realized this could be over at any second.”

Kailey Page (11), also a varsity player, said, “I’m just grateful that we get a season at all, even though it’s not what we hoped it would be.”

COVID-19 has significantly impacted the wrestling team as well. A two month reduction, mandated online

learning for wrestlers and smaller twoschool “duals” instead of multi-school meets are the biggest of changes. Boulder County even mandated masks for wrestling matches within county lines.

Damian Flores (12) said, “...it’s been kinda annoying to have to wear a mask during practice cause it always comes off [during matches].”

Wrestling is a sport where even masks and other changes can’t seem to make it safe.

The swim team has endured their fair share of changes too.

“It’s definitely changed the team experience a lot,” says Alli Sanders (11), who has swam with the team for three

years now. As well as similar precautions as basketball and wrestling, the swim team now has separated shortened practices, mask rules only exempted while in the pool for meets, and social distancing with dots on the floor around the pool.

“After practice, you just get your stuff and leave. Usually they give you chocolate milk and food after, which in my opinion is the best part,” said Sanders.

The meets present another big change. Each school has their own “meet” at their respective pools and they virtually submit their times.

Darcy Keown (11), a past swimmer who opted not to swim for the team this year, says past meets with the other schools were “a little stressful sometimes, but that’s what [made] them fun.”

The Fairview Swim Team coaches also decided to have cuts this year to limit the number of people on the team. Some swimmers thought it was harmful to the team’s community, even if it was necessary for safety.

On the changes made Sanders said, “[I thought] I wouldn’t feel safe going to a practice.

And they proved me wrong.”

Other sports such as ultimate frisbee, soccer, and lacrosse are in their modified spring seasons, with the advantage of the outdoor air that naturally has more ventilation and space. Volleyball, Poms, and color guard are beginning their indoor practices as well.

Everyone stands on a dot that’s six feet apart from the next dot.” The distance needed for safety has made connecting with teammates much harder.

T

his year, plenty of things have been cancelled or postponed because of the coronavirus, but one activity that seems to stand strong is skiing. Resorts are inviting people to come up and ski by reservation, and Colorado’s favorite sport continues to be enjoyed. A senior at Fairview, Imani Fernandez-Gorbea, got the chance to do something a little different this winter when she went on a helicopter skiing trip.

Fernandez-Gorbea has been skiing since she was three years old, and it’s been a large part of her life and character-building skills.

Her heli skiing opportunity took place at Silverton Mountain in San Juan, Colorado.

She said, “The whole thing is amazing, but some of my favorite moments would have to be the first time you go up in the helicopter over all the mountains, to your first drop and how breathtaking it is, but also how every single run’s powder is unreal.”

This was Fernandez-Gorbea’s first time heli skiing, and she described her experience as being super exhilarating and some of the best skiing of her life.

Heli skiing differs from regular skiing in many ways. There is access to remote terrain, the mountain can be much more difficult to ski, and of course, there is a helicopter involved.

Fernandez-Gorbea got to experience all the contrasts between a normal ski day and heli skiing.

She said, “I’d say the only real simi-

larity to a normal ski resort is taking a chair lift up at the beginning to get to the first heli pick-up zone. It’s totally different because the one I went on was the guided all day heli. So you go with a guide in a group of usually four, the helicopter picks you up and drops you off at the top of a mountain, the guide then decides the best way to go to avoid the danger of avalanches, and each person skis down one at a time, leaving room between each person.”

Heli skiing poses lots of dangers, including avalanche risks and even uncertainty within the helicopter. In order to heli ski, you have to be a talented skier and go through a good amount of safety training. Fernandez-Gorbea had to do lots of preparing before she was allowed to start skiing.

“To prepare, you need to have avi gear like a backpack with a shovel, probe, and beacon. Also you need to know what to do in case of an avalanche, so they always do a mini-lesson the day of just as a refresher. Also, you need to be prepared to ski harder stuff because it’d be a problem if at the top of the mountain or halfway down you realize you can’t ski it and you’re kind of stuck,” she said.

Even though Fernandez-Gorbea wasn’t at a ski resort with tons of other people, there were still many coronavirus precautions to help keep everyone safe.

“They definitely had COVID safety precautions and everything,” she said.

times when at the base, in the cabin, or close to others on the mountain. And double masks were required in the helicopter at all times by everyone.”

Even with COVID precautions, Fernandez-Gorbea deemed her heli skiing experience incredible. She recommends the experience of heli skiing to anyone who has the chance.

She said, “If you ever get the opportunity to go heli-skiing, don’t pass it up because I guarantee you it will be the best ski day of your life.”

livia Rodrigo has become a viral sensation with her new single “Drivers License” hitting #1 on the top charts across the world in three days.

Olivia’s devastatingly beautiful lyrics of painful heartbreak have captured the hearts of millions.

In her passionate lyrics, she says, “Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me/ ‘Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street.”

Released January 8th, the 17-yearold’s debut has taken over streaming services and had over 13 million streams per day. What makes this number so astounding is the second most played song in the world, DAKITI, has only 4 million streams per day.

She is also #1 in the US with a whop-

ping 5 million daily streams. Naturally, it has taken over Tik Tok and other mainstream media. According to Spotify’s data, Drivers License sets the record for most streams in a day (that’s not a holiday).

Olivia is not only a singer but a Disney actress as well, starring in Bizaardvark and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She has also been a part of writing music for the latter.

Her other well known and self-written song is All I Want, which she sang on the show.

Clearly, the singer-songwriter is talented, but will she be a one hit wonder?

Her followers do not think so, claiming she’s the next pop icon and this century’s equivalent of Taylor Swift.

Apparently, Taylor Swift agrees.

The successful singer wrote “I say that’s my baby and I’m really proud” under Olivia’s Instagram picture. Olivia, a die-hard Swiftie was ecstatic.

This motherly praise is so special because that is exactly what Taylor’s mom says to her.

Taylor Swift was not the only celebrity who couldn’t get the song out of her head. Haily Beiber, Jake Paul, Nial Horan, Jimmy Fallon, and many more expressed their support and admiration.

Students had some mixed feelings. Senior Kaylee Wuhu fully supports the song and its artist. She said, “Genius storytelling and emotional vocals. Olivia Rodrigo is a promising new artist.”

However, not all students agree.

Many think it’s a good song but that it has been overplayed so much it is no longer enjoyable.

Senior Sagar Vaidya says, “ It’s not even a good song. It’s not even a good break up song because it’s not sad enough or slow enough.”

Other students were quick to jump to it’s defense claiming that since it was created by a young woman who is rising to fame it has gotten more hate.

Olivia’s original song from the High School Musical show was also very popular and made it to #90 on Spotify’s top 100 hottest hits. She is now signed with Geffen Records.

Her songwriting talent and powerfully controlled vocal range have found success many times leading followers to think she will not end up a mere one hit wonder, but the next huge pop icon.

The internet and fans have dissected the lyrics and speculate that the song is written about co-star Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter. Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter are not only actors but songwriters

as well. Soon after Olivia released her song, Joshua teased his song “Lie, Lie, Lie” and Sabrina released her song “Skin”. Fans are speculative and suspicious the songs are in response to her single. Olivia has not yet publicly addressed the rumors.

Drivers License has gone viral across tik tok with people making POV’s (Point of View) from the car, the guy, the best friend, the steering wheel, and many others.

Olivia is planning on releasing her EP soon which will contain more tracks. With her success and production persistence, it does not seem likely Olivia will become a one hit wonder.

n February 5, 2021, Malcolm & Marie, a black and white movie about a crucial night for the relationship between a filmmaker and his girlfriend, was released to Netflix.

While covering the span of solely a single night, the film unfolds numerous layers about the connection between Malcolm and Marie.

The movie stars John David Washington and Zendaya, and is the first Hollywood film to be completely written, filmed, and produced during the COVID-19 pandemic. It had a 22-person crew and was shot entirely at the Caterpillar House, located in Carmel, California, over the course of two weeks, according to Zendaya. The movie was in black and white which influenced how the characters were dressed.

Zendaya said, “There was a thought [...] about reclaiming the narrative of black and white Hollywood and Black actors really having their moment at that time [...] We did want to pay tribute to that era and reclaim that beauty and that elegance.”

To keep the crew safe while working on Malcolm & Marie, there were many regulations that were put in place.

Before filming began, everyone had to get tested multiple times and quarantine for two weeks. Some rules that had to be followed during production were no more than 12 people on set at

all times, cast members handled their own costumes and microphones, and no crew members were allowed to be close to cast members without proper protective equipment.

Sam Levinson, the director and writer, seemed to criticize how reporters review certain movies through Malcolm’s repeated bashing of “a white girl from the L.A. Times.” Although unnamed, this character has a prominent part in revealing Malcolm’s judgemental and opinionated personality. Many critics of this film have noticed the connection between Malcolm’s outrage over an L.A. Times reporter and Sam Levinson’s own personal experience with freelance critic Katie Walsh from the L.A. Times who reviewed his film Assassination Nation. Although Levinson has rejected the direct connection between him and the film in this aspect, it is not something critics have brushed over lightly. Aisha Harris from NPR plainly said, “[Malcolm & Marie is] two characters rendered awkwardly as vessels for a director’s odd hang-ups about his own identity and craft.”

Many critics agree that both Zendaya and John David Washington’s performances were outstanding given the material they were provided in the film. Even so, Malcolm & Marie has received an overall of 59% from Rotten Tomatoes.

There seemed to be no deeper meaning to it besides a toxic couple who had a big argument one night.

The plot follows Malcolm and Marie battling through a rough night following Malcolm’s movie premiere.

Miscommunication and arrogance in both parties led to insults constantly being thrown at one another for much of the duration of the movie. Marie’s past with drug addiction surfaces along with her attempt at an acting career, giving the character somewhat of a backstory. Several people involved in their lives are named in the film, contributing to the slight development of both characters. Anger and sadness were evident tones that loomed throughout.

Although the representation of having two Black lead actors starring in the film, and the aim to pay tribute to Black actors throughout history by making it black and white are appreciated, there seemed to be no deeper meaning to it besides a toxic couple who had a big argument one night. It failed to establish a sense of purpose, and the ending didn’t seem to have much closure. Even though the film is aimed at an older audience, given it is rated R, the extensive amount of criticism and backlash it has received is unsurprising. Overall, Malcolm & Marie is not recommended.
