a community in isolation

W

e were in quarantine for more than 75% of 2020, which means the majority of the year was spent physically isolated from each other. This has forced us to redefine the structure of our community, creating social contact from within our own homes. When our classroom doors closed, we moved to Google Meet, to Discord, to virtual space shuttles. We did not abandon our need for a way to gather simply because gatherings were limited to ten people.

However, isolation has taken on a new palpable meaning. Both its physical and mental forms were omnipresent this year, and will continue into 2021.

How we choose to combat it going forward is up to us.

In this Issue, we will examine some of the new ways our community has already found to stay together, as well as some of its aspects that isolate us, even when we’re not in quarantine.

We hope that you find some connection here.

S

ince March, students in BVSD and across the US have been uncertain of what comes next for their education. As school districts figured out the ins and outs of online school, students also had to experiment and find new ways to communicate and interact with their peers and clubs.

Discord, a messaging, file sharing, and calling app, has become increasingly popular among clubs at Fairview as a way to create club spaces and communicate with peers. Through Discord, members in a server can send messages to specific channels or people, and voice channels are available to start a video or voice call that any members can join.

“It’s like a big lunchroom,” said Finn Friday, a senior.

Friday’s server, which has almost 100 members, mostly seniors, isn’t for a specific club—it’s a collaborative space where people can chat about classes and join calls to play games or work on homework together. The server started among his friends as a gaming server when they were sophomores, but since the COVID-19 pandemic, it has evolved. “[The server] has become a very hybrid environment where at any given time there will be one group of people working on school stuff [...]

and also people who are playing video games and talking to friends,” said Friday.

For clubs, Discord is another way to meet and communicate despite COVID-19. Juniors Daniel Guerrero, Leo Ge, and Vadim Uzdensky started Fairview’s Socialist Club last year, and are using Discord this year to lead their club.

“We use this [Discord server] as a place to actually have our meetings,” said Guerrero. “It’s also a place where we can have online discussions while we’re not in club meetings [...], so no one has to wait for the next meeting to bring something up.”

Discord, unlike Google Meets or Zoom, is available at all hours of the day, one of the reasons why it’s useful for organizing clubs.

“You don’t just have one meeting time, because Discord is more textbased and you can interact at any time. You don’t have to wait for anyone to show up,” said Guerrero.

In Friday’s server, the large amount of members means that at any hour of the day, someone is online. Friday stated that there are ten voice channels available to use for things like gaming, test corrections, or peer-editing papers. Any member can join a voice channel if they want to be a

part of the group or have a place to do work with others.

“Probably 16 to 18 hours a day there is at least one person in a voice channel,” said Friday.

For Friday, who is an IB Diploma candidate, the server is especially useful for communication with the nu-

merous other IB Diploma candidates who have joined the server. They can talk about deadlines, assignments, and discuss the program, providing a way to connect with fellow students without being in a classroom together.

Even for those who haven’t used Discord for long, it’s an effective way to host clubs and join groups.

“I didn’t even know that Discord was a thing until we started meeting on it,” said Meghan Barnes, a senior who leads the Women’s Empowerment Club. “Discord has made meetings a little easier. Because we can message everyone about meetings, it’s just made things faster and more efficient.”

Getting on Discord, according to the club leaders, is really easy, and makes Discord an accessible alternative to Zoom or Google Meets.

“Once you figure it out it’s a really versatile and easy platform. It’s really great if you need to send files to edit peoples’ writing, and [voice channels] are much simpler than a group phone call,” said Friday.

Moving online to Discord or to any other online space can have its drawbacks, still.

“It’s a lot harder to get to know people in your club online, and it’s generally harder to do things online,” said Barnes. “Being online is a good way to continue the club but it’s just not the most effective in terms of organizing projects.”

Discord is a way for students to be constantly connected with each other during a time where we don’t often see real faces outside of our own families, and where normal physical workspaces like lunchrooms and libraries aren’t available.

For more physical clubs, it’s a difficult transition, but for more discussion-based clubs like ours, [Discord] fits really well.

“I can always expect to open Discord and be able to find someone to talk with,” said Friday. “It’s just a normal way that we can have social interactions. Now that COVID has hit we have to do things differently than normal, and I think it’s pretty convenient that we’ve been able to integrate schoolwork into [the server] as well.”

n November 7th, the Associated Press and other national news organizations called the election, announcing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris the President and Vice-President elects. The election process was lengthened by the counting of mail-in ballots.

We spoke to students in the Fairview community across the political spectrum to learn about their fears, hopes, opinions, and questions for the next administration and the next four years of national politics.

all of the protests over this quarantine period have actually made an impact on the administration,” said Tuohig, “and that they take to heart what everyone in America has been pushing for.”

Tuohig added: “I am worried that Biden and Harris... aren’t going to be as radical with police reform and systemic racism. I’m worried they aren’t going to make as much of an impact as people have been hoping.”

For some students, key political issues, namely the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, hit close to home. “I’m worried I won’t be able to go to college in person; I’m worried more people aren’t going to get a senior year,” said Haley Tuohig, a senior who plans to register as a Democrat. She expressed regret at not being able to vote this year.

Though Tuohig’s primary hope is that the Biden administration gets the pandemic under control with the help of a vaccine, she hopes the Biden-Harris team will address issues of racial inequity and police brutality. “I hope they prioritize police reform so that

“This whole thing needs to get solved,” he said, “So we can stop the violence from BLM and the anti-police people and get the police sharper.”

His opinion on the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic differed from Tuohig’s position: “With the Trump administration, I think we probably would have been out of this earlier.”

Another concern that made his top five involved Biden’s tax plan, which, according to Biden’s website, will raise taxes exclusively for those who take in over 400k in income annually.

not gonna effect them, but the truth is: everybody’s taxes are going up,” said the Republican, who supported President Trump in 2016 and 2020. “Conservatives aim for less taxes and liberals aim for more taxes; that’s just how it is. I don’t know why people are arguing like everybody’s taxes aren’t gonna go up.”

While 56.1% of Fairview student respondents to a recent survey identified themselves as Democrats, a further 36.6% identified themselves with another party or as unaffiliated. One of the students in the former category is Torlis Freidman Tebockhorst, who is a member of the Peace and Freedom Party (which believes in social justice, undoing the effects of climate change and police reform, and is against the death penalty), but plans to register as a Democrat when she is old enough to vote.

“I think the current [administration] has done so much damage,” said Freidman Tebockhorst, “that the majority of [Biden]’s presidency is going to go into reversing that. He has some interesting plans for climate change and student

debt, but I’m not super confident that he’ll be able to pass those.”

Though Harris makes history as the first woman and first Black and Asian person to be elected Vice President, Biden is homogenous with nearly all previous presidents, which Freidman Tebockhorst touched on. “I think Harris is a really cool person who could get a lot done. I’m worried [Biden] is not going to be able to do too much just because he’s still an older white Catholic and still has pretty moderate views.”

“I’m honestly kind of worried Biden might just die,” she added.

They also expressed concern about difficulty talking about beliefs that stray outside of the norm set by the “Boulder Bubble.” “I would consider that a strong issue, because it goes further than just politics. Because people set their beliefs, and become one with this Boulder Bubble, and if your beliefs don’t line up with those, you’re [...] out of luck,” said the student.

An independent student whose views skewed right in 2018 and wishes to remain anonymous supported centrist Democrat candidate Tulsi Gabbard in 2020. However, he is still hopeful for the Biden administration’s time in office.

“I hope they treat finding a way around COVID more accurately than the Trump administration did. I hope they follow through with everything they say they’re going to do. If they do that, I think it will be a successful presidency.”

However, the anonymous student added: “With COVID, Trump certainly gave it a good shot of trying to keep the country open, trying to keep the economy going.”

Some priorities for this student

Another independent student is Sol Shurtleff, a freshman.

“We are a very politically divided country right now, as we can see, each side is very extremist and very opposed to each other,” said Sol. He identifies himself as a futurist — concerned with how current events will impact future technologies and generations.

He supported Andrew Yang in the 2020 primaries, due to his aggressive plan to combat climate change.

After tackling the pandemic, he hopes the Biden-Harris administration will address his top three priorities: combating climate change, making health care more affordable, and working to insure equality for citizens of color and LGBTQ+ people in our country.

Said Shurtleff: “It’s crucial that we

invest a lot of our taxes into climate change, renewable energy, solar power […] we need to cut out fossil fuels and fracking.”

Similarly to Freidman Tebockhorst, Shurtleff is concerned about the President elect’s age. “Joe Biden is a good candidate [...] but I think he’s getting too old to a point where I definitely think Kamala might have to take over soon.”

“What I like to do is try to have an open mind to people,” said Shurtleff, when asked why he declined to select a particular political party. “Like for Trump, I’ve gone and tried to observe from [his supporters’] perspective, but I really don’t see how it could benefit the earth.”

Conclusion The current student community of Fairview High School represents the next generation of politics and government — as we get older, we are becoming the next wave of both voters and lawmakers. Our beliefs will shape our country, and, by extension, our world. In the last 10 years, only 2.5% of bills became law, according to statistics recorded by govtrack.us. But many students are tired of this division, and hope to move into a new era of improvement of our nation.

Said Tuohig: “The only way for these next four years to be civil and productive is for moderates, conservatives, and liberals alike to suck it up and figure out what to do about the pandemic and the issues facing America, and work together on them.”

T

his year has been a pretty long first semester, and it’s looked pretty different than other years. For one thing, we’re not actually in school, in case you haven’t noticed.

Towards the end of the first semester, the Boulder Valley School District went completely online again, returning to the one day a week hybrid we had been in. This came after another surge of Covid-19 cases in Boulder County and the country.

For many, it’s back to sitting at a desk all day, every day, staring at a screen with little social interaction.

While it’s not a huge difference from going in-person one day a week, it’s still a little disappointing. Even if it was a shortened day, going in-person was like a trailer for the future.

A glimpse of what might be, especially for Freshmen in their first year at Fairview.

At the beginning of the school year, after much deliberation, BVSD started online learning with a block schedule, where although we have

fewer classes, each class is longer than normal. While this does shorten our overall screen time, it was a big adjustment; certainly a shock for my attention span. And now that restrictions are getting tighter, and there’s more quarantining going on, it doesn’t look like the circumstances are going to change any time soon.

I certainly didn’t imagine being in this situation back when school got cancelled in the spring. I thought it was a nice, extended spring break at first. Until it turned into an extended summer. Now I’m confused about what month it is.

At times this pandemic seems unreal. My morning traffic jam is my dog trying to trip me. But this is real.

I may not like it, but it’s real. That was the main difficulty of back to school this year. For a while, I could go with the flow, but then the flow got boring.

One of the best parts about school is the socialization. Being able to talk to other people. Now that’s difficult, because in-person socialization comes

with a risk, but I’m also getting tired of Zoom meets.

Another difficulty I’ve come across is homework. Or in this case, just more work. All of our assignments are online, and after sitting through classes all day, I don’t always have the motivation to continue staring at a screen.

But as slow and disappointing as this can be sometimes, it could be worse. I’m not going to say how, because I don’t want 2020 getting any ideas, but it could be.

And we’re adapting. Yes, I’m sick of hearing people say that too, but it’s true. This is our life now, and while “back to school” didn’t really seem like “back to school,” one day it will.

A

merican children are a unique demographic, considering the historical hub for immigrants the US has been.

That being said, a majority of kids strongly identify with a home culture, whether that be one of a variety of American cultures or an international one. Children of immigrants or historically international families navigate without a home culture.

Naturally, these children gain a unique perspective on race, and society as a whole. However, it is in no way a superpower. Research from the American Psychiatric Association shows that Americans who identify as two or more races are not only at the highest risk for, but suffer from the highest average rate of mental illness out of any racial group in the country, with approximately 25% of all multiracial Americans reported as suffering from any mental illness.

The condition of being “culturally homeless” is complex, especially in formative years such as childhood. Cultural homelessness is not

To understand how multiracial life functions in America, context about American culture is needed.

American culture is fiercely individualistic and unforgiving. It is a society where personal value is entwined with, if not completely determined by, personal wealth.

For centuries, powerful men have lied, stolen, enslaved, and killed to protect the untamed beast of American capitalism. In the process, constructing an intricate socioeconomic hierarchy based entirely on skin tone.

The United States’ race-centric culture has so concretely determined every facet of a given group’s livelihood that most political, social, and economic issues have become racial issues. CNN exit polls from the 2020 election indicate a system divided mainly by race:

Donald Trump received the majority of votes from every white age group surveyed, respondents from 18-60 years old.

Joe Biden received the majority of votes from all other ethnic and respective age groups surveyed.

Consequently, 84% of Trump voters surveyed expressed that racism in the U.S. is “not an important problem.” 68% of Biden voters expressed the opposite.

Simply put, multiracial kids in this time are forced to pick sides.

Most politically active Americans refuse to even associate with those of a varying ideology, which ironically is taking steps backwards in the racial equality movement.

Census figures show that multiracial Americans are on average the youngest group in the country, with a median age of about 20 years. For reference, the median age for white Americans is around 44 years.

The combination of socio-racial pressure and youth leads many multiracial Americans to be decidedly apolitical. Pew Research Center notes: “a large share of multiracial

adults who, when initially asked about their political views, say they are neither Republican nor Democrat. This includes 28% who say they are independents and an additional 16% who say they are “something else.” The share saying they are “something else” is significantly higher than among the general public (10%)... The relative youthfulness of the multiracial population helps explain the high share of mixed-race adults who describe themselves as unattached to either major political party.”

This distancing from politics is generally not out of hate for America, but rather stems from a cultural disconnect. Politics, and by extension race, is very territorial and exclusive to those it concerns.

Multiracial kids typically walk a fine line between established American cultures for this reason. Being labeled “too white to be that” or “too brown to be this” is entirely a defense mechanism employed by monoracial Americans due to this territorialism.

As a result of having no home culture to defend them, many multiracial kids have adapted to have a hard outer shell. This modern pressure, combined with generational trauma, builds resolute minds. The BRUNO MARS PUERTO RICAN/JEWISH/FILIPINO

American Psychological Association explains that, “Multiracial children and adolescents are resilient.

Researchers show that multiracial identity increases an appreciation and empathy for cultural diversity among others… this may be because the multiracial participants are more likely to understand that race is not biological, but rather, is a social construct.”

This hasn’t exactly struck the American public yet, much less Colorado. As of 2018, only 3.9% of the Boulder population identified as belonging to two or more races.

This is only a little more than four thousand, in a city of over 105 thousand people. Boulder is not exactly revered for its diversity. Many residents are aware of the 88% white majority in Boulder, but are very active in race equality activism.

For the Boulder minorities seeking solace in the revitalized progressive movement in the city, there is hope. But a large portion of these four thousand multiracial residents are kids, and many feel conflicted. Multiracial activists are genuine people, most times fighting for a group they have limited

relation with. Multiracial kids face an ultimatum in social movements such as this: commit yourself in the fight for others, but expect no fight for yourself in return.

The gradient in question is the reality of being multiracial in Boulder.

Existing in a fluid definition of race is liberating, but at times can be quite existential when living in such a racially rigid country. Choosing a culture can mean giving up an entire side of your being, but staying “unaffiliated” can be very isolating.

unorthodox: a journey to a new home

a review of the netflix miniseries unorthodox anna wenzel // arts and entertainment section editor

H

ow a person chooses to define family is not always related to the one they grow up with, and no story better demonstrates this than Unorthodox.

Inspired by Deborah Feldman’s 2012 autobiography, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots, the show is a story about a young woman escaping her strictly religious society to embrace freedom halfway across the world.

The show stars Shira Haas, an Israeli actress who plays Ester (Esty) Shapiro, and most of the show is spoken in Yiddish. Esty grew up in the insular Hasidic Jewish society of Brooklyn, New York. The series starts with the protagonist fleeing from her home to Berlin, where her mother escaped many years prior. She does not speak German, does not have an education, and does not even have a place to stay, yet her courage leads her to seek a new life for herself.

In Berlin, Esty forces her way into a group of elite music students.

Though she seems to be a childlike woman in a bad wig, this diverse friend group accepts her with open arms and Esty quickly becomes one

of them. Through trips to the beach and playing the piano with her friends, Esty finds herself and what her life means to her.

Unorthodox is a show that causes

finds herself walking into the lake.

Her clothes drenched and only her head floating above the surface, Esty submerges herself and her wig floats away in the water, revealing her shaved head. This is the first moment in the show that Esty sheds her past and starts to walk into the future, captured perfectly in this one scene. Esty’s story is equally sad and uplifting in unexpected ways. The viewer’s heartstrings will be pulled and they will leave every episode with an intriguing cliffhanger.

Those who enjoy a more serious story filled with secrets and a tireless fight for freedom will love watching Unorthodox on Netflix.

the viewer to feel wholly immersed in Esty’s journey. Perhaps the most impactful scene in the show occurs when Esty goes to the beach with her friends. She does not feel comfortable taking off her clothes to jump into the water unlike the Europeans around her, but slowly

F

leet Foxes is an indie/folk band formed in 2006. They have released five albums, four singles, and have more than 18 million views on YouTube. Recently they released a new album entitled Shore. This album has 15 songs on it, each of which will be reviewed.

“Wading in Waist High Water” is an incredible entrance into the album. The singer starts off calm, singing softly, until the song suddenly kicks up. This sudden upbeat section is fast and beautiful, and makes the song one of the best on the album.

“Sunblind” starts off as a segue from the previous song, and slowly builds and builds until it reaches the first chorus. This song reminds me of driving up Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park.

It feels like something you would hear driving up the road into the alpine tundra, the mountains growing more and more the further you drive.

“Can I Believe You” immediately begins with a bang. The piece is a fast paced, loud, yet still under control experience, as it brings the best that Fleet Foxes has to offer.

“Jara” is a good song. It is energetic, bright and fun to listen to.

“Featherweight” is a great track. It reminds the listener of going on a road trip, and driving through a deserted stretch of road, mountains far off in the distance.

“A Long Way Past the Past” is another good piece. Nice, calm, but still embodying the Fleet Foxes sound.

“For a Week or Two” is another nice piece. Calm, quiet, and collected, this piece is overall a nice transition into the latter half of the album.

“Maestranza” is the best song on the album. It truly is awesome, with its beginning reminiscent of something from The War on Drugs, another band, before transitioning into the singing, which is beautiful.

“Young Man’s Game” is a fastpaced piece. It moves along at a quick tempo, once again reminding me of driving through Utah at night.

“I’m not My Season” is a nice change of pace after the last couple of songs. Slow and methodical, the piece is a chill break in the album.

“Quiet Air/Gioia” is the next song.

The singing in this song is stunning, as the voices resonate loudly in your ears.

“Going-to-the-Sun-Road” honestly does remind the listener of the real life Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park. The feeling of astonishment when seeing the mountain monoliths surrounding you when driving along the road is perfectly translated into this piece, as the voices sound as if they are echoing off of massive cliff walls.

“Thymia” is another slow paced piece, coming off of a moderately fast song. Nice.

“Cradling Mother, Cradling Woman” is awesome. It explodes into an amazing chorus, followed by wonderful instrumentation.

“Shore,” the final and titular piece of the album, is a wonderful song. It slowly adds more and more over time, adding an instrument here, or a singer here, before finally crescendoing into a final burst of energy for the entire album. This song is a wonderful send off to the album.

final thoughts

I loved this album. It stuck with the Fleet Foxes’ sound, yet changed up things here and there, giving a fresh look at what the band is capable of. I personally find that the album works best while driving long distances, as the music lets you enjoy the vast landscapes surrounding you. Overall score? 9/10. An awesome album.

O

n October 30th, seniors gathered at 7am in the Senior Parking Lot to watch the sunrise and decorate their car windows.

This annual event had been pushed back due to COVID restrictions.

“Though the weather was cold, it was fine,” said Aria Wozniak, Student Council’s President. “It was still a really fun morning, and it was really well organized, and many people showed up. So it was very successful.”

Student Council has had difficulties planning events

this year because of quarantine, but they have still managed to get a few in, including Senior Sunrise, Dear Santa, and a canned food drive.

“We are trying our best to plan events,” said Wozniak.

“We are hoping to do a prom; obviously, we will know more after winter break.”
