The Journey of the Unknown Warrior: Walking Tour

Starting at Victoria Station Wednesday 4 November, 1.00-3.30pm The Unknown Warrior was laid to rest on 11 November 1920, the second anniversary of the WWI armistice. The body of the British soldier, who died on the Western Front, was drawn through the streets of London past the newly unveiled Cenotaph to Westminster Abbey. The Cold War’s Most Notorious Spies

Online Tuesday 10 November, evening talk The Portland Spy Ring was one of the most dangerous KGB espionage rings to operate during the Cold War. November 2020 marks the 60th anniversary of the breakthrough which enabled MI5 to identify the final two spies in the Ring. The remarkable full story is told in a new book, Dead Doubles by Cambridge University historian and former BBC reporter, Trevor Barnes, who will be in conversation with Professor Rory Cormac. Discovering that he has a heart condition called Sudden Death Syndrome, his new awareness for the fragility of life encouraged him to fight even harder to make his count. “The book is dedicated to the Syrian people and the Iraqi Kurds who were instrumental in the defeat of ISIS; I was their chemical weapons advisor,” Hamish explains. “The aim is to galvanise the world into the abolition of chemical and biological weapons.”
