New Westminster residents will be able to take items to the local recycling depot a bit longer than planned.

While the city had anticipated it would be closing the New Westminster recycling depot in February, it’s determined the facility can stay open until the end of March.

“As we are moving ahead with the redevelopment project for the new aquatic centre, it looks like construction is now not going to start until April,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “The direction council has given is, let’s try and keep the existing recycling centre open as long as possible, until construction starts for the new pool project.”

More than 1,400 residents have signed a petition opposing the closure of the recycling depot. City officials have said the design of the new aquatics and community centre, the presence of underground infrastructure and the desire to keep the existing facility open during construction prevented the city from retaining the existing depot.

Many residents have voiced concerns about the closure of the depot and the city’s decision to partner with the Tri-Cities on a regional facility on United Boulevard, just across the Bailey bridge in Coquitlam. Members of city council have admitted the city should have done a better job of engaging with citizens about plans to close the depot.

Deal coming for ride hailing in New West

A regional licence for ride-hailing has yet to be introduced in MetroVancouver, but it’s possible you may already be able to get a lift in NewWest.

On Jan. 30, the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation released the details of an interim inter-municipal business licence bylaw for ride-hailing companies wishing to operate in the MetroVancouver, FraserValley and Squamish-Lillooet regional districts and urged municipal governments to adopt the proposed bylaw as soon as possible. Under the intermunicipal business licence bylaw, ride-hailing companies would be able to obtain one licence to operate, instead of having to get separate business licences for each municipality.

“The cities have worked really collaboratively over the past month-and-a-half.

That framework is now going to go to each individual council to decide whether they want to participate, but I am expecting the vast majority of cities to support the regional framework, and potentially all of the cities in MetroVancouver will join in,” Mayor Jonathan Cote told the Record. “I think there has been a lot of good work on all the cities’ part to try and work together, and I think it’s a far better system than the patchwork system that was going to be developed and will actually give the cities in the region a far better position to help manage ride-hailing in the MetroVancouver region.”

Cote, who chairs the Mayors’ Council, expected staff to bring a report and recommendation to New Westminster city council in the next month.

“Right now, NewWest actually doesn’t have any regulations in place.That does mean that ride-hailing companies can operate in the City of NewWestminster under the provincial regulations,” he said. “It is possible that ride hailing could be happening in the City of NewWestminster, but as soon as the city decides to join the regional ride-hailing, companies would be required to be part of that system to be able to operate in the city.”

On Jan. 23, the Passenger Transportation Board approved Uber and Lyft to operate ride-hailing services in the Lower Mainland and Whistler areas.

“I don’t know whether there is any operating, but there is nothing right now that would restrict them from doing so.They wouldn’t be in violation,” Cote said. “NewWestminster took the position that we didn’t want to put anything in place, knowing that this regional framework would be coming forward, and we were fine having that short grace period where there could be some operations with just the provincial regulations.”

According to a press release from the Mayors’ Council, the inter-municipal business licence has several requirements and processes for ride-hailing companies wishing to operate locally: ride-hailing companies would pay a $155 annual per-company fee and an additional $150 charge per vehicle; the per-vehicle fee will be waived for wheelchairaccessible vehicles; the pervehicle fee will be discounted by $30 for zero emission vehicles; and the City of Vancouver will administer the interim inter-municipal business licence fee, collecting fees and trip data, which

will be distributed to participating municipalities each month.

Cote said a number of municipalities have expressed some valid concerns about ride-hailing, including equity issues with the taxi industry, the ability to provide accessible vehicles and traffic congestion.

“The Mayors’ Council had a really good discussion about this in terms of how we would be in a better position to manage it locally if we worked together on this,” he said. “I think the Mayors’ Council also said a lot of these issues relate to

provincial jurisdiction, and if we continue to work, engage and push those issues there, I think that’s made some of the concerned cities a little bit more comfortable joining this regional framework.”

In December, NewWestminster city council endorsed the idea of creating an inter-municipal business licence for ride-hailing companies. Some council members expressed concern about the potential for ride-hailing to contribute to road congestion and to have an unfair advantage over the taxi industry in terms of reg-

ulatory requirements.

The Mayors’ Council is also encouraging municipalities to harmonize current municipal fees for taxis with fees set out in the inter-municipal business licence. It’s also urging the provincial government and the Passenger Transportation Board to level the playing field for taxis and ride-hailing companies by reviewing taxi boundaries, fleet caps and insurance requirements and to ensure a mechanism is put in place to subsidize approved ride-hail vehicles or taxis that provide adequate accessible services for cus-

tomers who rely on mobility devices such as wheelchairs and scooters.

B.C.Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claire Trevena said the framework will streamline the business licence application process – eliminating a patchwork system across the Lower Mainland and allowing pickup and drop-off between participating municipalities.

“We will continue working to ensure the system works, prioritizes safety and is fair for ride hailing, the taxi industry and all road users,” she said.

Trial date set for accused in road death of Olivia Malcom A Burnaby man will go to trial next year to face charges in connection with a crash that killed a young NewWestminster woman in June 2018 on Highway 17A in Ladner.

Following an arraignment hearing in Surrey provincial court on Jan. 28, 44-yearold Chao Chen, the driver

allegedly responsible for killing 19-year-old Olivia Malcom, had his trial date set for Feb. 8, 2021.

Chen has been charged with impaired driving causing death and impaired driving over 80 (milligrams of alcohol) causing death in relation to the crash.

Chen was taken into cus-

tody in August 2019 and subsequently brought before a justice of the peace, whereupon he was released on a number of conditions including: must not occupy the driver’s seat of any motor vehicle; not to be found in public in a state of intoxication; must surrender all passports and travel docu-

ments or authorizations; and must remain in the province of British Columbia.

Malcom and her 20-yearold friend were standing behind their vehicle, which was parked off the shoulder of Highway 17A in Delta, when they were hit from behind by a Jeep. Malcom died at the scene.

She was remembered as a prominent member of the NewWestminster lacrosse community, and an online funding campaign in the months after her death raised more than $100,000 for a bursary to support post-secondary education.

New Westminster is hopeful the Municipal Finance Authority will soon be making fossil-fuel-free financing available.

Council has received a staff report regarding the city’s investment portfolio as of Dec. 31, 2019.

It had a balance of $179 million, which was $16 million more than a year earlier – an increase the city attributes to funds being set aside for major capital projects.

At the Jan. 27 council meeting, Coun. Patrick Johnstone sought a staff update about fossil fuel divestment and opportunities for the city to move some of its investments into a fossil fuel-free fund with the Municipal Finance Authority.

“We have been in contact with the MFA and they have expressed that they have received a lot of interest in pursuing a fossil-fuel-free investment prod-

uct.They expect to be able to announce that at their AGM, and they have said we could share that information,” said Colleen Ponzini, the city’s director of finance.

“The fund would be very similar to the bond fund that we currently hold with the MFA, so it would be a very good product for the City of New Westminster.”

For the past two years, Johnstone has raised the issue of fossil-fuel-free investment opportunities when the city receives its investment report.

“It’s good to hear this is an option that’s coming up.

I still think it’s important,” he said. “More than ever it fits with our larger climate action.”

Mayor Jonathan Cote said New Westminster has played a role in encouraging the Municipal Finance Authority to consider fossil-fuel-free investment options.

look at divestment options and fossil-fuel-free investments, but he said the city has also been connecting other likeminded cities.

“That’s really what has helped the MFA be a little bit more open to this idea,” he said.

“Two years ago the MFA was not seriously looking at this.”

Cote, who is serving his first year as a director on the Municipal Finance Authority board, said he’s been able to raise the issue there.

“But it’s a collection of advocacy work between our city and other cities that have really pushed the MFA into seriously looking at this,” he said. “I think it’s certainly very consistent with the work we are doing with our seven bold steps for climate change and our declaration of a climate emergency, but there’s a growing movement among a number of cities that are looking for these types of actions.”

New West residents can buy trees, plant trees and water trees to help grow the city’s tree canopy.

The City of New Westminster’s 2016 urban forest management strategy has a goal of increasing the tree canopy in New West from 18% to 27% by 2035.

To accomplish that goal, the strategy proposes the planting of 3,330 new trees on private land and 8,500 new trees on public land, including new street trees (6,300) and new trees on cityowned park and civic lands (2,200).

“We are very excited about this first round of opportunities,” said Dean Gibson, the city’s director of parks and recreation.

Gibson said the city will start with “baby steps” and can build on the success of the programs that are getting underway this month.

By starting small, he said the community will learn about opportunities as they

become available and staff will learn how they can best support the community in these endeavours.

Starting Feb. 14, residents can pre-order two trees at a subsidized price and pick them up at the Queensborough Community Centre on March 14.Varieties of apple, magnolia and spruce are expected to be among the trees available for the

first sale.

“We are being conservative because this is our first event. It’s difficult to gauge the interest.We are allocating for about 125 trees.We are opening an online portal mid-month, this month,” said Jeff Case, an arboriculture technician with the city.

“We are allowing for two trees maximum per house.

We will have five different

species to choose from.”

Once those 125 trees are spoken for, Case said the city may be in a position to order more trees to accommodate interest.

Coun. Nadine Nakagawa said she’d like to ensure the city finds a way of making sure multi-family dwellings, such as condos and apartments, are aware of the program.

“From what I have heard from other municipalities that have done this, it has been hugely successful,” said Coun. Mary Trentadue. “I hope that ours will be as well.”

Coun. Chuck Puchmayr likes the idea of including fruit trees in the sale.

“I have always wondered when we plant street trees why we don’t plant fruit trees. If somebody is walking down the street and there is a ripe apple there, why can’t they just grab it?

It’s food,” he said. “I am very pleased that the apple trees are part of that.”

The City of New Westminster is also launching a

tree rebate program to encourage tree plantings on private property.Through this program, the city will offer residents a $20 voucher/rebate toward the purchase of a tree that is equal to or greater than $50 from one of the local participating nurseries.

Coun. Patrick Johnstone said the tree sale and tree rebate program will help the city reach its goal of increasing the tree canopy, as the city doesn’t have enough land to reach those goals on its own.

“We really want to foster this conversation to really create a snowball effect, if you will, to engage with our residents,” Case said. “Private property is a key for us as a community to achieve our 27% tree canopy.”

The city is also launching a new adopt-a-street-tree program that will get residents to provide “tree care assistance” when new trees are planted in the street or boulevard near their homes.

the dry summer months, add mulch at the base of the trees as needed and notify the parks and recreation department if they detect any issues or have any concerns with the trees.

Street trees that aren’t adopted by residents will be placed on the “operational watering list” and will be watered and monitored by city staff. During the course of that work, staff will also be able to keep an eye on the condition of trees that have been adopted by residents.

Staff will report back to council on the success of these programs in late spring 2020 and make recommendations for the continuation of the tree sale, which could be held in the spring and fall, the adopta tree program and the tree voucher program, which would be held every spring.

The coronavirus has brought out the worst in us

Some say that adversity brings out the best in people.

Well, not always.

When it comes to dealing with a pandemic, it often brings out the worst in people.

Pandemics like the one currently seen in the novel coronavirus are terrifying.

They are the raw material of science-fiction horror movies that we don’t want to ever become science fact.

In Canada, health officials understand the human propensity for panic and have

been very careful in their comments on the global outbreak so far.

But, predictably, where there isn’t a lot of solid information to go on is where fear and misinformation flourishes.

While health officials lectured sternly about the proper sources of information, social media threads were exploding with all

Now that B.C.’s first two “presumptive” cases of the virus have been publicly acknowledged, a more proactive approach to dealing with the rumour mill on the part of health authorities

would be a good idea.

We’re encouraged to hear their commitment to share information.

So far, health officials say there’s a need to be prudent but not to be fearful.

One man who has the virus is remaining in his home, and he and his family

are being watched carefully.

Of course, this is a rapidly changing situation.

It’s likely more cases will be confirmed here before long.

For now, however, the best advice against the spread of the virus is to use common sense – wash your hands, stay home when sick, cough into your sleeve, and don’t touch your face.

Stay calm and don’t believe everything being spread about the virus online.

age from a pandemic like this one is how many trolls crawl out from under their rocks to spew racist garbage about immigrants.

Social media has been filled with people making racist comments about seeing someone who is Asian cough on a SkyTrain.

You might think you are being clever making a joke, but you’re really spreading ugly racial stereotypes.

So just stop it.

BC NDP tougher than '90s version

One of the key differences between the current BC NDP government and the BC NDP government of the 1990s is the current one’s ability to take the heat.

Whether it is staring down the environmental movement, the teachers’ union or a handful of social activists, this version has found an ability to stay the course amid a sea of controversies.

By contrast, the 1990s NDP government (at least during its first mandate) seemed afraid of various interest groups the party had counted on for traditional support, including environmentalists, trade unionists and social service groups.

The so-called “war of the woods” that pitted environmentalists against the forest industry had the NDP almost in panic mode. An attempt to revamp the auto insurance system melted in the face of well-organized opposition.

The party, back then, was also distracted by a simmering scandal (known as “Bingogate”).

Part of this tougher approach is reflected in the personality of the man who leads the government, Premier John Horgan.While there is no doubt he brings a passion for reform to the office, it is also clear he is not going to be pushed around.

For example, he continues to take a tough stance on the standoff between the eight hereditary chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en and the construction of a natural gas pipeline near Kitimat. He has rightly refused their demands for a face-to-face

meeting and has repeatedly said the “rule of law” must be followed (a reference to a court injunction in favour of the project).

And Horgan isn’t the only key government figure displaying a steeliness in the job. Finance Minister Carole James is locked in a tough fight with the B.C.Teachers’ Federation, which continues to demand the education budget be increased to accommodate their fairly expensive contract demands.

James has curtly refused the union’s demands and continues to insist it bargain within the negotiating mandate like all other public sector unions. I don’t believe she will cave on this even if the teachers hit the picket line.

James will present her next budget in the coming weeks, and the expectations are that it will be balanced with a tiny surplus.This can only happen if she says “no” to many hands from many sectors reaching out for more funding.

This current government showed its willingness to take on some of the party’s traditional base of support with its decision early on to build the Site C dam.

Next came welcoming the giant LNG Canada project, as well as its tepid opposition to the Trans Mountain pipeline.

Who knows whether this trend will continue as the next election hovers into view, but so far at least, this version of an NDP government is not lacking in confidence, even though it is in a minority position in the legislature.

Nurses occupy office in protest Ten nurses at Woodlands School took over their employer’s administrative office for 90 minutes because the school was one nurse short of Industrial Relations Council essential service levels that day and seven nurses short the day before.The action was part of a campaign by Union of Psychiatric Nurses and B.C. We’re trying to fix the shortage in child care Editor: Re: Letter: New West child care is at a crisis point. Fix it. Record letters There is no question that child care is a major priority for families in New Westminster. I have heard directly from parents who have been on child-care waitlists since before their children were even born.

After 16 years of underfunding under the previous government, there is a shortage of quality, affordable child care in New Westminster and across B.C. When John Horgan formed government in 2017, we acted immediately to address the childcare crisis. And my colleague, Hon. Katrina Chen, was appointed as the minister of state for child care.

Since then she has been incredibly busy working across the province to tackle the cost, quality and availability of child care for working families. We are beginning to see the results of those efforts.

Since forming government we’ve invested $12.1 million in New Westminster so that more families can have access to affordable, quality child care when they need it.

This includes investments in the Affordable Child Care Benefit, the Fee Reduction Initiative, grants to create child-care spaces, programs in partnership with our local government, and there’s more to come.

Affordable child care can have a transformative effect on families.

One New Westminster mom was excited to let me know that because of the child-care benefits, she and her husband were finally able to afford to open their own local business. Another family has told me that they are saving $1,500 a month in child-care fees and can begin to save for the future.

We know that there are still many families patiently waiting for their children to have a spot in neighbourhood child-care centres. This problem developed over many years, and it will take several different approaches to address, but we are making progress.

With the backing of our community, my colleagues and I will continue to bring more quality, affordable child-care spaces to New Westminster and communities across B.C. MLA Judy Darcy, New Westminster

Cyclists need to stay off off the sidewalks Editor: While I agree there should be more dedicated space for cyclists, in the meantime, they will have to share space with pedestrians and motorists.

Just a reminder for cyclists: pedestrians have the right of way on the sidewalk – it is not up to them to move out of your way, it is up to you to slow down.

Community Woman asks city to tackle graphic anti-abortion images Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

A New West woman tearfully asked city council to take action to prevent anti-abortion groups from exposing people to graphic images on city streets.

Rebecca Ninkovic was waiting to cross the street at Eighth and Carnarvon streets last weekend when she was confronted by a giant poster showing graphic imagery of an aborted fetus. She was unable to get past the large poster on the sidewalk.

“It was only inches from my face,” she told council.

“I was instantly triggered. I struggle with mental health, and I have complex PTSD. I have been working very hard on my recovery.This encounter instantly interrupted my personal sphere and forced me to look at a highly disturbing image that I would have chosen to avoid had I been given the choice.”

While it appears there is very little police can do to

address the issue, Ninkovic asked council to reassess city bylaws related to the display of graphic imagery that obstructs the use of public streets and sidewalks and exposes children and other community members to traumatic, triggering experiences.

“The protesters proclaimed freedom of speech and human rights rhetoric when I engaged with them regarding the damaging images they were using,” she said. “I was deeply disturbed even further when a little girl around the age of my own seven-yearold daughter was staring in horror and disbelief at the image. I quickly jumped in front of her gaze and told her to guard her eyes and look away.”

Ninkovic said it was traumatizing for her to view the graphic poster, as she was forced to view similar images as part of her own fundamentalist religious upbringing in the pro-life movement.

“From a young age, I

was exposed to these images,” she said. “It took many years of therapy to undo the damaging effects of these unwanted images that cause severe psychological distress. Scientific studies show how these negative images affect our brains.”

“This wave of anti-abortion protests – they have a campaign. It’s all across Canada and beyond.These groups are focused on New West, particularly one of them,” she said. “They are amping up; they are just getting started.”

Mayor Jonathan Cote said council was aware of a previous campaign that included anti-abortion mailouts and posters in the community.

“Obviously things have ramped up in terms of the more public things when it comes to graphic imagery that you are talking about here,” he said. “I think we will definitely be referring this back to staff to present council with more options on how local governments can look into this.”

Lalji hopes to return to board in 2020

The results are in, and NewWestminster’s school board voted unanimously in 94% of motions brought by trustees.

The Record analyzed votes on motions using minutes from all regular school board, education committee and operations committee meetings from the New West school board.That included looking at how many motions failed to get an endorsement from a second trustee, how many received split votes and how many motions were voted down.

Among 219 motions in 30 meetings, five did not get an endorsement, five received split votes and three motions were shot down, making for a total of 13 disputed motions – roughly 6% (leaving 94% unanimous).

Perhaps more interestingly, of those 13 disputed votes, 10 were in the first month of 2019, while independent trustee Mary Lalji

was still attending meetings.

(Lalji has been on a medical leave for a year, now; her last meeting was on Jan. 29, 2019.)

Danielle Connelly is the only other trustee not on the Team Cote slate. She is part of NewWest Progressives.

While the January 2019 education committee saw no dispute over any of its six motions, there were six disputed motions among a total of 14 in the operations committee meeting and four disputed motions among a total of 22 at the regular board meeting.

Since then, only three meetings, in April and May, had one disputed motion each.

Discounting the month of January, the number of undisputed motions totals more than 98%, while the month of January itself saw just over 76% of motions unanimously approved.

Lalji said the figures “speak to the trustees generally voting on certain issues as a block.”

“As an independent trust-

ee, I tend to question motions more rigorously, with particular emphasis on the impact of our students, parents and staff when implemented,” Lalji said in a brief statement.

However, school board chair Anita Ansari pushed back, saying the number doesn’t give the full picture.

I feel like it doesn’t really reflect all the critical discussions that we have.

“I feel like it doesn’t really reflect all the critical discussions that we have.We often put out a motion, it gets amended, we have lots of discussions. Just seeing what comes out at the very end is not accurate for the work that we do,” Ansari said.

Following an interview with Ansari, the Record reviewed the minutes and found 13 motions that were amended, withdrawn, rescinded or postponed.

“I think there’s a large context piece in understanding how we discuss things to end up where we go.We often do end up tabling things and bringing them back when we have more information,” Ansari said.

“It’s a developing piece, so just looking at the endpoint isn’t fair in terms of reflecting the work that went behind it.”

Ansari also suggested an alternative explanation for why January would have seen such a high rate of disputed motions.

“We had just started as a board, and we had not really figured out our flow with governance.We’ve had a lot of time since to really get in synchronicity with how to work through the process and have a better understanding of the process,” Ansari said.

New Westminster’s sole independent school board member says she hopes to return to her role as trustee sometime this year.

As of last week, Mary Lalji has been away from school board for a full year on a medical leave, the nature of which she declined to publicly disclose for the sake of her privacy.

In a text message, Lalji said the decision to take time away from public office “was definitely the right choice,” one she said meant putting “my health first.”

“My doctor advised it was best to focus on my health situation and taking a medical leave would be the best course of action,” Lalji said. “The time away from board work gave me the opportunity to take care of myself without the additional and unnecessary stress that became part of my role as an independent trustee.

My hope is to return this year.”

Lalji continues to work a day job while away from school board, which she did not comment on in her statement.

Current school board chair Anita Ansari said she will be happy to see Lalji return to her role whenever she’s able to.

“We don’t have an expected date of return. And we really hope she returns as soon as she is able to, but her health is her top priority, and we support her taking the time,” Ansari said in an interview.

“We welcome her voice back at our table when she’s able. I think all of us at the board really would love to have the unique perspective that she brought back when she’s able.”

The Downtown New West BIA is continuing its efforts to activate public spaces in the neighbourhood.

In an effort to inspire community members to activate public spaces, the organization has launched its second annual place-making grant program.With the city’s support, it is expanding and will support at least five projects this year.

The program aims to get community members to come up with creative ways to get people outside, foster social connections, build community by encouraging people to connect with each other in public spaces, and make the downtown more fun and inclusive. It’s also a chance to test new ideas and help identify/remove barriers that discourage activation of public spaces.

“As our population grows and many more people are living in condos as opposed to single-family homes, public spaces become more and more important,” said Kendra Johnston, executive director of the Downtown NewWest BIA. “Activating these public spaces helps to attract people to them, building community and encouraging people to connect with one another.”

Individuals, businesses and not-for-profits are invited to submit proposals for unique and innovative activations in public spaces in Downtown NewWest. Applications are being accepted until March. 1.

“We could not be more proud of the results of last year’s program and the incredible outcomes of the three winning submissions,”

Johnston said. “The Downtown NewWest BIA hopes to build on that success by supporting more projects in 2020 and to foster even more activations in our public spaces that are safe, welcoming and inclusive to all.”

In 2019, three projects received funding as part of the initiative:Vera Kobalia executed several kids sidewalk art installations, featuring traditional games like hopscotch and Twister, along Front Street, on the overpass to the riverfront and at River Market; Kobalia also created Metro Vancouver’s first “augmented reality” mural on the wall of the Union Gospel Mission’s building on McKenzie Street; and local resident Peter Leblanc brought several partners together to produce a free, interactive circus arts festival atWestminster Pier Park, which was attended by 1,000 people.

This year, the Downtown BIA is planning to fund five projects for up to $3,500 each, with money going toward the cost of producing the activation.

In addition to the grant, the BIA will also provide promotional support and guidance in acquiring necessary permits with the City of NewWestminster.

Activations could include dance, music, art, technology – or something totally different.They must be safe, welcoming and inclusive to everyone, must take place in public spaces within Downtown NewWest and must be done before Dec. 15.

According to the BIA, bonus points will go to proposals that use a previously underutilized public space and/or support a change in perception about a public

“Downtown NewWest is now home to MetroVancouver’s first augmented reality mural,” Johnston said.

“You are HOME is a truly innovative piece that would not have come to be if not for this grant program.This project in particular embodies the spirit of our intent, bringing together many partners to activate a previously unused public space.”

The Flight of the Hummingbird is based on an Indigenous parable from the Quechuan people of South America.The story of the brave hummingbird travelled through pre-contact trade routes to become well known within Haida culture.The opera, created for young audiences, is influenced by the graphic novel written by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and will include elements of his dramatic Haida-manga illustrations.

RAIN CITY GAMES Rain City Games is the newest business to set up shop in River Market.

After getting its start in Vancouver, co-owners Andrea Robertson and Channing Guenther recently opened a second location in New West and are thrilled to be part of the downtown community. The Record checked in with Robertson to get the details WHEN DID RAIN CITY GAMES GET ITS START? Channing and I bought Rain City Games in September 2017, back when it was One Stop Shop Cards and Games in the International Village Mall in downtown Vancouver.

Since then, we’ve been making the place our own – curating a huge selection of games, hosting events, and making Rain City Games a welcoming place for gamers of all stripes.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU OPEN UP A SHOP IN NEW WEST? We opened our doors in New West on Nov. 1. We had already been thinking about opening a second location, so it was a good sign when the River Market approached us last summer and asked us to move in. We toured the market and spent time in the surrounding area and fell in love with the vibrant neighbourhood and community spirit – exactly the sort of place we could see ourselves making a

It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss, but most do not seek a solution right away. In this study you’ll be playing an important part in determining the key factors around identifying hearing loss and what influences the decision to seek treatment.

How does mindfulness help children improve attention?

Mindfulness is “paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, to the present moment, nonjudgmentally” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p4). When children practice mindfulness at school, they learn to intentionally self-regulate attention.

Children begin with breath awareness, then shift MAUREEN MACKINNON- awareness to a focal point. Focal points include MCQUARRIE, PH.D. thoughts, physical sensations or emotions, with the goal of acceptance for the experience. Zenner’s meta-analysis (2014), examined school mindfulness programs and found a moderate effect on cognitive performance and resilience. Zoogman’s meta-analysis of mindfulness programs (2014), found a reduction in anxiety and an increase in coping, especially for the neediest kids. Mindfulness increases attention, self-regulation, and reduces anxiety in children (NASP). Pairing mindfulness with evidence-based instruction for kids with LD can improve the response to intervention, by reducing anxietyrelated memory impairment. The theatre is continuing its Global Tea room series on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 3 to 5 p.m.

The concert series, hosted by Cassius Khan, introduces audience to the tea and musical traditions of a variety of cultures around

the world.The featured performer on Feb. 23 is Bosnian musician Zelko Krakan.

Krakan, who is a violinist, composer and arranger, is a former member of the Sarajevo Symphony Orchestra and the Sagrestano Chamber String Orchestra, with which he toured throughout Europe and Asia. Since

coming to Vancouver in the early 1990s, Krakan has performed extensively throughout Canada and the U.S. He’s a founder of Trio Allegra, with whom he released two CDs, EastWest Journey and BecauseWe Like It, and he has performed music on four continents.

The second annual Level-Up My Brand contest got underway on Feb. 1, with $18,500 in prizes available to the winning business. Entries are being accepted until Feb. 29.

Rich Patterson, one of the co-founders of LevelUp My Brand contest, said the event is for local businesses and organizations – for-profits and non-profits – whether they’re big or small, old or new.

“If an organization feels like they have plateaued and wish to explore what the next level is, this contest is for them,” he said in an email to the Record. “If a small business thinks their brand is stuck in 2002 instead of 2020, this event is for them. If you feel overwhelmed by all the demands, fiscal and organizational, then this contest is for you. A rising tide floats all boats. Let’s all work together to make our organizations and community better.”

Level-Up is a “for-us-byus” approach that sees local businesses helping other NewWest organizations.

Businesses don’t have to be members of any local organization in order to apply.

“It’s tough to do busi-

ness out there in this economic climate,” Patterson said. “We gathered a few local businesses and brainstormed ideas on how we could help our community in our areas of expertise.

From there we created the Level-Up My Brand contest to help an organization that might not have the skillset, time or even budget to market themselves.”

Patterson said the finale event is now a tradeshow style event, where 10 finalists and all of the event’s sponsors come together to show off their wares, and the finalists make pitches as to why they should win the prize package. Everyone is invited to attend the April 1 finale at 100 Braid St. Stefania Butkovic, owneroperator of Mindful Mutts, was thrilled that her business won the 2018 contest, which included a $12,000 prize pack. Mindful Mutts is unable to apply for this year’s contest, but previous applicants are encouraged to reapply for the 2020 contest.

“Winning Level-Up My Brand helped bring me more clients than I could even handle, and that’s a good thing!” she said. “Winning this prize landed me (my) first media attention with the local newspaper.

Longtime New West resident Lorrie Williams founded the Canadian Harambee Education Society in 1986 to help girls in Kenya and Tanzania to further their education.

Because of support from the society, thousands of girls have been able to attend high school.

A fundraiser for the Canadian Harambee Education Society is taking place on Sunday, March 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall, 318 Keary St. Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m.

New West residents are invited to strut on down to Front Street to check out some stray cats.

New Westminster resident Finn Kichiji Leahy recently returned from a four-month trip to Southeast Asia, where he photographed many of the sights – including stray cats.

“In Taipei, my hostel was down an alley behind the train station. Stepping out one day, I noticed a stray cat hopping along the awnings.When it was in front of the air conditioner, it did things that cats do where it circled around a few times and then lay down. And then it looked right at me,” he recalls. “I took a picture.”

Leahy, a fourth-year geography student at Simon Fraser University, spent a semester studying in Singapore.

gion,” he says. “With all the budget airlines that they have, it’s pretty reasonable to go around and see different things.”

From Singapore, Leahy visited Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Taipei in Taiwan.

“There are far more stray animals in Southeast Asia than there are here,” he says. “I suspected I might see some more stray animals, just because it’s not as

cold there.”

While hanging out in areas with markets and restaurants, Leahy photographed many of the cats he spotted.

“I just tried to take photos of everything I saw that was interesting,” he says. “Sometimes these cats would just be staring at me.”

Some of those photographs are now on display at Old Crow Coffee Co. at 655 Front St.

“It’s 15 pieces. Seven cats, and each cat is paired with the neighbourhood where I took the photo of the cat – you can kind of see the context of where the cat lives,” Leahy says.

“There’s one picture of a dog. I didn’t see as many dogs. Cats are far more common.”

The Stray Cats of Southeast Asia exhibition will be on display at Old Crow Coffee Co., until mid-April.

Morneau gets call from Canadian baseball hall

NewWestminster native to be inducted this summer to mark MLB career that included an AL MVP award Justin Morneau is going into the hall of fame – twice.

The New Westminster native, who was the second Canadian to ever win a Major League Baseball MVP award, was among the class announced Tuesday for induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

Morneau led the Minnesota Twins to an American League division title in 2006, batting .321 and driving in 130 runs to become the first Canadian to win the AL MVP award.

At that point, only Larry Walker, who last

week was voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, had achieved such a feat.

“When I heard the news that I would be enshrined in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame I was honoured,” Morneau said in a statement. “When I learned of fellow inductees John Olerud, Duane Ward and Jacques Doucet, I was at a loss for words.

“To think that I would be joining these distinguished members that had such a lasting impact on baseball in Canada is truly humbling. I am looking forward to being in

St. Marys (Ontario) this summer to celebrate with my fellow inductees in person.”

A third-round pick in the MLB draft by the Twins in 1999, the New West Secondary alumnus climbed the organization’s minor ranks, making his major league debut June 10, 2003 at the age of 22 against Walker’s Colorado Rockies. He singled in his first career at-bat and finished 2-for-4.

He played 11 seasons in a Minnesota uniform before joining Pittsburgh of the National League in a late-season trade in 2013.

Primarily a catcher growing up, Morneau

shifted to first base midway through his minor league career, as the Twins recognized his big-league bat potential.

A four-time MLB all-star, Morneau posted his best numbers in an injury-shortened 2010 campaign, where he registered a .345 batting average for Minnesota with 18 home runs and 56 runs driven in over just 81 games. SFU swimmers tread water without head coach Dan Olson

Members of Simon Fraser University’s swim team have few qualms about the early hours and heavy schedule they signed up for, including 20-plus hours a week training in the water for the major meets on the NCAA calendar.

Reaching their potential and trying their best are part of their DNA.What also unites them is the knowledge of what a great coach can bring to their efforts – making their current situation all the more frustrating.

For the second straight year, the SFU program is heading into the crucial part of its schedule without a head coach due to an unannounced leave of absence.With so many questions unanswered, swimmers Andrew Woinoski and Collyn Gagne are asking on behalf of the team for some support – and preferably the return of their coach.

Longtime coach Liam Donnelly left the program at the beginning of January on what was described as an administrative leave. Swimmers were told then, as before, that the reasons for the leave were between employer and employee, and the coaching duties would be assumed by part time assistant coaches Maxime Marechal-McCoy and Dylan Roguski.

“It’s very unlike Liam, because he’s been dedicated to this team for years,” remarked Woinoski, a fourth-year athlete. “The years before I arrived he had never taken a leave, never stopped doing what he’s been doing year-round. …

We’ve talked to the student union society and we’ve talked to (Student-Athlete Services), the student athletic body, and pretty much got a reply that they kind of wanted to help, they understand, but are maybe afraid to represent us.”

Donnelly has been coaching on Burnaby Mountain since 1991, taking over SFU’s head coaching duties a year later. His record has resulted in 15 collegiate national team titles, 143 individual national titles and 62 Div. 2 national records.

“It just seems like (the administration) don’t understand how big of a deal it is,” said Gagne. “We need our coach.We came here for our coach, we stay here for our coach. He’s crucial for the program, really.”

It’s actually the third time in four years that Donnelly has been put on leave. Four years ago, swimmers, gathering for their daily practice, found the doors locked and were unable to contact their coach.The first leave lasted five months, with then-assistant coach Cory Beatt taking over.

Donnelly resumed his full-time coaching duties in 2017-18, but a year later was again removed for three weeks, including the runup to nationals and trials. Ranked second entering the NCAA Div. 2

nationals, SFU recorded its bestever finish, ninth overall. However, that fell short of what they felt they could have achieved.

“Lot of people were really disappointed because for some of them it was their last meet, some

This time, as in the first, the 36-member team has been given

no specific end-date as to when the coach may return.

The Record reached out to Donnelly by email for comment, but he declined: “Sorry but I really can’t provide a comment at this point.Thanks for understanding.”

A call to SFU’s athletics and recreation senior director,Theresa Hanson, had not been returned as of the paper’s deadline.

SFU’s team includes New West’s Amar Fecjzic, a junior, and Burnaby’s Micah Lau, who are Hyack Swim Club products.

While they understand that they may not have a right to know the reasons behind the leaves,Woinoski and Gagne said it’s the fact that the recent absences came without warning and left them gearing up for NCAA championships and national qualifying events without critical support that hurts the

most.This year, Gagne has a shot of making Canada’s 2020 Tokyo Olympic team.

“Collyn is probably a little scared to mention this, but he probably has a very good shot at Olympics this year. Last year he finished second at the trials in 400-metre (individual medley); if he repeats that again this year he’d be just one place away from making the Olympics. If he’s under the FINA ‘A’ cut, then he would qualify,” noted Woinoski. “(Donnelly’s) a hard worker, and he really cares about us. He definitely does, and he helped me take off a lot of time and helped me get to where I am now,” added Gagne, a third-year student who was recruited by Donnelly from Oakville, Ont. Blackout keep on winning

The New Westminster Soccer Club women’s Blackout gutted out a 3-1 win over Delta on Sunday, stretching their undefeated streak to 14 consecutive games.

The lone blemish on the team’s Metro Women’s League record this season came in the first match back in September, when they fell 2-1 to Richmond despite dominating the game.

Against Delta, the Blackout began the match with only 10 players, due to a combination of illnesses, injuries, and work commitments. It took 40 minutes before the 11th

player joined the fray but the Blackout were already up 1-0 on Naomi Noda’s well-executed play 34 minutes into the game.

Celeste Bain converted a Noda pass through the goal box in the 58th minute to make it 2-0.Two minutes later, Delta replied with a lofted shot just outside the reach of New West keeper Jasmine Kazi.

But the Blackout locked up the victory on Sarah McCarthy’s left-footed screamer, a 20-yard blast to the far post, to make it 3-1 in the 66th minute.

VERNON, Blanche Beth October 17, 1925 − January 25, 2020 Blanche Beth Vernon (nee MacDonald), age 94, passed away peacefully on January 25th, 2020, with family by her side. Beth was a beloved only child born to Charles and Hazel Macdonald on October 17, 1925, in Edmonton, Alberta. After marrying the love of her life, David "Ayl" Vernon, in 1946, Beth moved to Coquitlam, BC, where she and Ayl raised their two sons. During this time, Beth worked as an office manager and was an active member of Como Lake United Church. In retirement, Beth and Ayl settled in New Westminster and spent much of their time travelling and attending Dixieland Jazz Festivals. Beth also enjoyed spending time with family at their trailer on Mayne Island and their cabin on Pitt Lake.

Beth is predeceased by her husband, Aylmer; granddaughter, Corinne; daughter−in−law, Marg; mother, Hazel; father, Charles; cousin, Bebe; sister −in−law, Dolly; and brother−in−law, Erich.
