A Letter to the Class of 2020: Mr. Miller Dear Class of 2020: I have been fortunate enough to know so many of you for the last 6 years. For my Mount Arlington, choice, and transfer students, whether I have known you for the last two years or only a few months I consider myself a lucky man for the opportunity to get to know you all and to serve as your principal. The Class of 2020 is special in so many ways. Rather than reflect on all the things you all have lost over the last few months, I’m going to reflect on the great experiences you were fortunate to have at Roxbury High School. I would like you all to consider what you were able to accomplish and how you have grown during virtual schooling.

Five years ago, I was the first person to announce you as the Class of 2020.

Where did the time go? Members of the class of 2020, you have grown in a variety of ways. Whether it be socially, emotionally, or academically, I think you would all agree that you have become more self and socially aware and responsible.

When you encountered academic challenges and personal struggles, you analyzed those problems and made thoughtful decisions. Many of you have

served your classmates as officers, many of you have served your community and school in various clubs, and many of you plan on continuing to serve the public.

Over the last three-plus months, you have demonstrated the resilience and grit that will assist you in being successful at whatever you choose. Class of 2020, you are the Portrait of a Graduate that Roxbury wants to reflect our school, our district, and our community.

I know our future is bright. Toni Cacopardo, Hana Johnston, Marissa Mangano, Katelyn Molina, and Eric Shumaker are going to make great educators. Our freedoms will be defended

by Devin Bahn, Abbey Murphy, Jake Wohltman, and Mini Maresca as members of our armed forces. I know that I’ll have plenty of

options if I get sick. Adrian Vo, Emily Stanich, Daniel Rosengrant, Katie Nunes, Olivia DeVries, And Ryleigh Coakley will take care of the medical needs of our future generations. Roxbury will have the next “Beauty Guru” thanks to Serah Njoroge. Roxbury High School’s Class of 2020 will find ways to positively impact the world.

You have left your legacy, and it gives me great pleasure to celebrate your accomplishments at Roxbury High School. In some way or another, you all have contributed to our history, pride, and tradition.

Remember broadway comparable performances. Remember FNL and gameday themes. Remember homecoming. Remember choir, band, orchestra, and dance performances.

Remember art shows, your yearbook, your favorite and least favorite classes.

I am very proud of you all. Know that you are loved here at Roxbury High School. One last thing I want you to always remember, every day is a great day to be a Gael!

A Letter to the Class of 2020: Lauren Tom, Valedictorian grieving as graduation, Rox-Thon, water wars, senior trips, sports seasons, choir trips, senior awards ceremonies, and many other events were cancelled. Our profound disappointment upon hearing that we would never again step foot in the RHS hallways was evidence that, regardless of how much we sometimes complained about early mornings and difficult classes, Roxbury will forever be our home. Our time here not only prepared us for life after graduation but helped shape the individuals we have become.

Walking out of school on March 13th, it’s safe to say that not a single one of us knew what our futures held. Little did we know, everything we had looked forward to for these past four years would be cancelled one-by-one. We sat at home

Class of 2020, this quarantine has given us ample opportunity to reminisce about our time at Roxbury and anticipate our futures. Though this pandemic may have caused us to miss out on many of the moments we had been patiently awaiting, it has in many ways brought us closer than ever. Our time at Roxbury

has been shaped by those who we have gotten to know so well and who will always have our backs, regardless of where life takes us. These connections we have formed are more valuable than any ceremony or dance ever will be. This quarantine has taught us the importance of being present and living without regrets. It has reminded us that life can change in a moment and has proven to us the value of being able to overcome adversity. Class of 2020, we will emerge from this obstacle stronger than ever and with a new outlook on life. Although we weren’t able to walk across the stage at graduation and shake Mr. Miller’s hand, remember that every day is a great day to be a Gael. Wherever we may end up in life, we will always be able to call Roxbury our home.

A Letter to the Class of 2020: Sarah Attieh, Salutatorian The last few months have been difficult.

In the most important year of our high school career, our experiences were cut short. Steps away from the finish line, everything we’ve been looking forward to for four years was taken away. I think I speak for most of the class of 2020 by saying that right up until March 13th, I was enjoying the best year of high school yet. What seems like our last real day of high school was supposed to be the day of our first ever Rox-Thon event. Personally, Mini-Thon/Rox-Thon has been the highlight of my high school experience. I will forever look back at the memories of planning this event as the most fun and rewarding times of my last four years.

This club introduced me to wonderful people that I am honored to call lifelong friends and gave me a sense of purpose when times were tough. For many, I know that our all-night event typically marked the beginning of the end of the year.

What became our last day together was originally meant to set off the chain-reaction of last moments that would lead us to graduation.

classmates, don’t let this small blip in time undermine or devalue everything you have accomplished. I wish you luck in everything you pursue going forward.

Unfortunately, those last moments were passing us by, and we had no idea—our last open lunch, our last conversation with our favorite teachers, our last laugh with our best friends in class, our last performances, our last goodbyes in the parking lot. We know that this needed to happen, that it was necessary for all our health and safety, but it’s okay to acknowledge that it wasn’t fair. Crossing the stage on June 19th was supposed to be amazing, and even though it will not happen in the way in which we imagined it, we should all be very proud of ourselves. To the people who did not think they would make it all the way here, I am proud of you. The class of 2020 is very special. To all my

A Letter to the Class of 2020: Magda Perrett, Our Editor-in-Chief for the rest of our lives. We are off to do remarkable things and make the world an extraordinary place. There is no doubt in my mind that the class of 2020 will leave a lasting impression that the world will never forget. There is no doubt that this tragedy has made us all stronger.

The last four years of high school have passed us by without so much as a hint to this unusual ending of our high school career. For most of us, we imagined the conclusion of our senior year filled with months upon months of nothing but warm spring days spent with friends—smiling and laughing—as if we were living our lives with a summer soundtrack playing in the background. But those hopes have faded.

The experiences we will never get the chance to live and all the “lasts” we didn’t know were going to be our last will never be forgotten. And though what was taken from us—from all of us—is unfair and irreplaceable, it shouldn’t cloud our hopes

I am so proud to be a part of the class of 2020. I have never known a group of students to be so ambitious and passionate in everything they do. From academics to sports to work to clubs, this year's graduating students have set a high bar for incoming senior classes. We have proven ourselves resilient in times of despair and positive in times of hardship. We have shown the remarkable maturity of a class that takes obstacles in stride and keeps our chins up and unwavering under any circumstances. We are determined, brave, and ready to take on whatever the next years of our lives throw at us.

I remember walking into the high school for the first time as a freshman, wondering what the next few years had in store for me.

Never in a million years could I have imagined this happening. I know that I wouldn’t have had the strength to deal with this tragedy as the naïve freshman I was four years ago. But now I know that we all have the strength to get through this

together. Roxbury has granted me the opportunity to grow and change into a remarkable individual, to find the strength and confidence to be the best person I can be, and I see the same thing happening to all of my classmates. Watching all of you grow has been the greatest experience of my young life, and I’m so proud to call you my friends.

As the next few weeks—and possibly months—continue to be a challenge for each of us, remember the strength and courage you’ve gained as you’ve grown. Remember that we are all cheering for each other and all waiting for that first summer day when we will be able to see each other again. As a reminder that we are all in this together, a few of Roxbury’s best and brightest students from the class of 2020 in collaboration with some of the wonderful teachers we’ve had along the way have taken the time to write out a final goodbye to the class of 2020.

Thank you for an amazing four years.

Senior Spotlight: Honoring Those Who Will Serve As many seniors prepare to attend college in the fall, others will pursue a different path: joining the U.S. Military. Each of these seniors was awarded the Patriot Award at the Senior Award night on Tuesday, June 9th.

Dear Class of 2020, “In our society, as people pass out of young adulthood, they tend to relate to themselves more in terms of what they are no longer than what they are now, and that's psychologically devastating.” –Marianne Williamson I want you to remember this quote. As you leave Roxbury High School, it is important that you recognize what these years have helped you to become…pursue…dream.

Your worst and best experiences here have prepared you for a future of worse and better experiences. You will learn that is

life—a continuous cycle of failing and prevailing. Your teachers here will await your tales of both with great anticipation.

That’s right! We don’t just shape you up and ship you out! We want to see the final product of our efforts!

of you. The ones that had very little to do with grades. Inside the walls and halls of our high school, we became a family.

Despite not being able to finish out our year inside of a building, we are still a family.

Inside of you will always exist the nervous, uncertain, wide-eyed, excitable freshman I remember meeting in September of 2016. Though you are more desensitized to the happenings of the world and better-trained in managing/hiding your emotions, don’t forget to reach back into that child once in a while and “touch base” with your rawness. Do yourself a favor and seek out situations that tap into your vulnerabilities.

That is what will keep you real and evolving.

When you think back on your high school years, you will not think of a virus. You will think about the friendships you’ve made, the achievements you’ve worked hard for, the laughter in classrooms, your teachers, your coaches, your crushes, and all of the best and worst lessons that brought you clarity. These last three months have not defined you. These last seventeen years have. And I have been extremely fortunate to witness your greatest leaps in the last four.

It has been a true honor to mentor, teach, invest, and yell at you—and to watch you transition from kids into young adults who I see mentoring, teaching, investing, and yelling at others. But above all, I will never forget how you stretched my heart.

I’ve been able to form profound relationships with several of you and have deeply cared about the many facets of your lives that go well beyond the academic realm: the aspects that broke you and healed you and built the very core

As you embark on your journey, remember, life is not about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself. I wish you all the best of luck! Even the sketchy #$%!@^&* who stole the juice boxes under my desk.

RHS Choir Program Celebrates Seniors

By Carla Farris Sports Editor Since March 13th, the last day students and teachers were allowed in the school for classes, Roxbury High School has moved to a virtual platform due to the COVID-19 outbreak. However, this virtual move was harder on some classes than others. The Performing Arts Department—which includes choir, band, dance and broadway theatre—were forced to place all plans and events on pause.

Of course, it was no easy task for the teachers and students. The classes in this department depend mostly upon performance driven assessment—hence the name performing arts. The choir program was the first to cancel a planned performance, as school was canceled just a week before their Annual Choir Invitational. This event would have been a special one too, because it would have marked the 30th year that Roxbury has hosted talent from schools across the northeast region.

After all of their hard work and dedication, the members of every involved choir were sad to hear the news of its cancellation. This was especially

hard for the seniors, considering this was supposed to be their last. Additionally, the decision to cancel the Invitational came so suddenly. A few weeks later—and still in quarantine—the program decided it would be in the best interest of everybody to cancel the spring tour, as well.

This year’s plans for the spring tour would have been the choir program’s first international journey; our program was prepared to visit Toronto, Canada to perform and compete against other choirs from across Northern America. However, with the spread of the coronavirus posing an increasing health risk, the option to move forward with this trip would have been too dangerous. This trip would have lasted from April 30th to May 3rd, leading them into the week of their concert.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t all. Spring Masterworks is a tradition in the choir program whereas each ensemble performs their designated pieces, and then everybody crowds the risers and sings 3 pieces, one from each conductor.

This, of course, was canceled as well once the school had been officially shut down for the remainder of the academic year. This left the conductors and seniors

with heavy hearts. However, Mr. Hachey, Mrs. Sweer, and Mr. Salyerds weren’t going to let this ruin their seniors’ final year with the program.

They devised a plan to surprise every senior member and celebrate their accomplishments. So on May 26th, 2020 they went door-to-door with signs, goodies, and lots of love for their seniors.

The conductors were able to get to almost all of the 35 seniors’ houses and give them the final send-off they deserve. Photos and videos of the surprises were posted on the Roxbury Choir Instagram page as well as some of the seniors’ social media. Mr. Salyerds captioned his sign “always make music” as Mrs. Sweer sported an encouraging “our seniors, our stars.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Hachey was able to encompass a few of the program’s biggest performances, such as Clue, all while presenting some good puns.

Needless to say, the choir program is a close-knit group. This stems from the dedication and hard work of our directors, as well as the relationships they make with their students. The Roxbury Choir Program will certainly miss their seniors, but they made sure that their seniors would not have to miss their final year.

By Olivia Post Opinions Editor Many opportunities have been lost due to the current state of the world. Amidst all of this, it is important to give recognition to every aspect of our school. This is especially true for the sake of our seniors who, over the course of four years, have put so much effort into these programs.

The Choir Department has been a huge part of Roxbury High School for many years. It is heartbreaking to think the

kids who worked so hard will be unable to get their Choir trip, final concert, and a proper goodbye. It is also important to remember though, these individuals are about to go on and do amazing things in life. So here’s to the seniors who have dedicated their time and effort to the RHS Choir Program, including: President Taylor Bailey, Vice President Josh Lemma, Secretary Serah Njoroge, and Treasurer Julia Malczynski. Our other choir seniors include: Omar Abdallah, Thomas Appleby, Anthony Benfield, Ryleigh Coakley, Dom Compano, Jose Delgado, Heather

A Letter to the Class of 2020: Mr. Conrad that time, you have undergone immense changes and now, as you are just settling into who you feel you are, it is time to make another enormous change. While graduating high school might feel like the end of something big (and it is), I prefer to look at it as the start of something bigger. No matter where you go, or what you choose to do, I hope the lessons you learned throughout your time at Roxbury carry and support your dreams and ambitions and help you cultivate the person you are meant to be. Believe it or not, your time at RHS has come to a close. No matter what your future holds, it is time to say goodbye to the place that, for most of you, has been your “home away from home� for the past four years. In

I have been your teacher in some capacity for at least four years, and for many of you, I have been your teacher for six or seven years! In that time, it has been my privilege to watch you grow into the amazing young men and women you are today. From phone biting to

It is my sincere hope that the lessons you have learned in our band program have helped to shape you and prepare you for all the challenges that lie ahead. Remember, hard work and dedication matter. Kindness and generosity matter. Facts and truth matter.

Honesty and integrity matter. Tolerance and diversity matter. Helping others in need does not make you weak, rather it only makes you stronger. These are the things you have heard me say time and time again and I hope they will ring true for you long after our time together. As you get ready to leave in the midst of these unusual circumstances, I wish you all the best of luck and hope you will find the rest of your lives full of joy, love and music no matter where your path takes you. A Letter to the Class of 2020: Mr. Goodwin works hard and does not take no for an answer. Having had some of these students since fifth grade, I feel privileged to have seen them grow from the small children that once entered my classroom in Lincoln Roosevelt to the fine upstanding adults they have become. I will always remember their ability to perform on their own without needing me to initiate them, the good many laughs we shared at EMS during our lunch periods, and the spilled coffee at RHS. The class of 2020 is a beacon in the orchestra room and they will be greatly missed next year. I wish them the best of luck with their future endeavors!

A Letter to the Class of 2020: William Fulton, Senior Class President

Your freshman year of high school everyone tells you, “It goes by so fast,” and “Before you know it you'll be graduating.”

As a freshman with four years ahead of you, you tend to brush those words off. It’s hard to comprehend that in four years you will have gotten your license, finished high school, and decided where you’re going to spend the next few years of your life. As a freshman, you are naïve to what the future holds. When I was elected President of the Class of 2020 freshman year, I would be lying if I said I knew exactly what our next four years held. With that being said, I take no greater pride than in the work I did as President of the class. From planning fundraisers to decorating ridiculous hallways to putting together Junior prom, I learned much more about myself than I did in any classroom, and I thank you all for that opportunity.

One of my favorite memories is the story of how I became president of our class, and it goes as follows: summer going into freshman year I got a text from a friend that says something along the lines of, “Will, we don’t want some weird person as

president of our class who is going to ruin our prom and make our next four years miserable. Would you consider running for president of our class?” As flattered as I was by the offer, I never saw myself as the kind of assertive, outgoing person needed to be class President. Nonetheless, I knew high school was a time for change and decided that running for president would be my first step. I’m not going to lie, being elected president presented many challenges I never would’ve thought about.

Raising money and setting up events was never easy, but in the end it was worth it stepping out of my comfort zone and joining the student council. Like many of you might’ve, I imagined student council as a group of nerdy kids worried about being a part of “student government.” However, after being at the top of the chain of command of student council these past four years, that vision has changed dramatically.

For the last four years, I have had the opportunity to work with a class council composed of kind, dedicated, and hardworking people who have made my experience as Class President truly enjoyable. It has been my privilege to serve our class with this great group of people and I thank you, the class of 2020, for allowing me to do so.

A Letter to the Class of 2020: Patrick Devery, Student Body President To the Class of 2020, Being the Student Body President at Roxbury has influenced my life so much.

I’ve learned so many valuable life skills: among them, how to be a leader. I learned how to cooperate and compromise with others when we disagreed, and how to handle people who just wanted to argue or completely disagreed with me over certain points. I also learned how to better communicate with everyone. The growth I have experienced over this period because of this position is exponential compared to any other time I’ve spent at the highschool.

I am very proud of the person I’ve become due to this and wish you all the best.

A Letter to the Class of 2020: Mr. Connolly casinos, origami classes, even a yard stick exploding on contact with a pinata. And of course there was food, lots and lots of food!

To the Class of 2020:

We went on spectacular field trips together to Ellis Island and the Met. Perhaps most importantly you were kind, thoughtful, and showed an enthusiasm for learning that I will always cherish. We had fabulous discussions on historical topics like the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan, to philosophical meditations on the natural rights of man, or whether a gorilla or grizzly bear would win in a fight. You all have given me memories that will last a lifetime, and for that I am grateful. I will be there for each and every one of you, forever and always.

Well, before the events of this year that have so disrupted our lives, the class of 2020 was dear to my heart. It is fair to say that I taught more of you than any other group of students. Because I had many of you when you were freshmen, and then again when you were juniors and seniors, a conservative estimate would be that about half your number have come through my doors. Your class always just seemed to understand me, and I hope you felt that I understood you.

You embraced my brand of humor, and revelled in my stories. You threw bodacious holiday parties, which had everything from 80s themes, to make-shift

The sense of unfairness that you all must feel is no doubt profound, as rites of passage that you have earned—and so well deserved—have been taken from you. But you cannot allow this pandemic to define or diminish what you have achieved during your time here at Roxbury. I am so proud of all of you, and your poise in the face of disappointment and hardship has been inspiring. If there is anything positive to take from all of this, it is that this pandemic has crystallized what really matters.

Looking back, there are likely many parts of our lives before the outbreak that seem petty and frivolous. I think we are all filled

now with the aching sense of what is truly important, family and friendship and love and beauty. These are the things that we live our lives for.

To live, though, is also to lose and to suffer.

You all have now experienced terrible loss.

But it is the finality of a thing that makes it precious. The ancient Greek tragedian Aeschylus wrote that wisdom comes alone through suffering. Hard though it may be to bear, you will all be wiser because of these experiences and more awake to the beauty and richness of life that is all around you. In many ways, this pandemic has laid bare the many problems that our country and society faces, the poverty and inequality and factionalism. But it has also revealed so much that is good about us, the heroism and selflessness and fortitude. Let what you have experienced these last few months fill your hearts with empathy, and prepare you for the building of a better America, a more perfect union that finally lives up to the ideals of the Founders. As a man I met during a chance encounter in Vienna once said to me: “You can change the world, you just have to do it.”

Senior Advice: A Message to All Seniors

In life, everyone faces obstacles that throw them off course. These courses or plans we thought were sturdy and in place have been destroyed. Therefore, we must seek a new path, find a new way to go. It is often you hear the saying, “Do not take things for granted,” or even hear the soothing melody of Counting Crows lyrics, “You don’t know what you got til it’s gone.”

This advice follows everyone: around whether it be athletes, musicians, scholars, teachers, parents, or the person reading this. This time, as a senior, I am

sharing this advice. Be thankful for the opportunities you have because they can be taken away in an instant.

College

For me, as a senior, due to the circumstances of COVID-19, I will not be playing my final year of lacrosse. In this sport, I have put my heart and dedication towards being a captain and teammate on the field. I am not the only senior who has something being taken away from them. In fact, all seniors, the class of 2020 all around the world, have lived in fear that senior activities such as graduation, and prom and all sports will be canceled. In many cases, those fears became reality

Rare moments, like the one we are living in now, can take over those plans we had once had in place. Sudden changes can redirect the paths we thought were perfectly carved. While some changes, like going to college, are a big exciting step, it is a change that can also be frightening. After being in a comforting high school for the past four years, many of us seniors must reflect on what we had.

Because before we know it, we will be back at stage one, stepping into an unfamiliar area searching for comfort and safety as freshman.

Many other people, like my brother who is a senior in college, have lost their opportunities to continue with sports as well. After years of growing up with these college sports, he and many others are losing something they love so dearly.

Now, they are home gaining an education through a computer screen, not being active on a field.

Being a senior in my final marking period of high school, it is difficult to continue school through virtual reality.

Do not take things for granted. Life is very fragile. We learn this through certain events that happen over the course of our lives. Some resulting in sudden changes, wishing there were just a few more moments to take in. We have to accept the changes and find a way to continue.

Though at this time, many people have lost things or someone they love, the steps taken after are most important. How do we move on? How do we continue? This is done by taking what you once had and turning it into memories that will be with you forever.

It’s not the only thing that makes you special—to say such would diminish your shine, minimize the thousands of accomplishments that lead to your diplomas. A Letter to the Class of 2020: Señora Lisa To all the graduates of the Class of 2020: To all graduating seniors—HOLA and Congratulations!!!!! I don't want to use all the clichés, but it is unavoidable. You are graduating in “unprecedented times.” You are living through such a “challenging situation.” You have been quarantined for months due to a global pandemic, having to learn on your own and learn how to manage your time. You have not had a normal senior year, to say the least—that is true.

But what you do have is an amazing strength and spirit that will get you through this. I think I speak for all teachers when I say we are immensely proud of all of you. I think I speak for all parents when I tell you how proud we are for your taking all these

challenges in stride. You have held your heads up high, you have persevered and you have made Roxbury proud—something you have done all your life.

So while you may not have had a conventional senior year—you will all come out of this stronger, more compassionate people—and that is saying something. We all know that Roxbury is a community that knows how to rally and come together when needed. Roxbury is a place that creates such warm, caring people with incredible strength. You will have unforgettable memories that no other graduating class will have. I hope you will all see the positives instead of the negatives—you have a new appreciation for toilet paper, you are actually encouraged to use social media, and you are allowed to “go to school” at 9:30! I hope that this is one thing you learn from this—try to always see the positive side of something instead of the negative.

Whether I taught you, advised you or just saw you in the hallway, I have treasured every moment with you. Each and every one of you has a gift to give this world so while the world may have changed during your senior year, it is now time for you to use your gifts to change the world. 2020: The Year of the Pandemic Proms

By Olivia Post Opinions Editor The national pandemic has caused change and heartbreak all over the United States and the world. Regardless of the current circumstances, though, many students have kept spirits high and had fun anyway.

After many Seniors have prepared and hoped for prom, graduation, and a full Senior year it is devastating to see the impact this pandemic has had. Even though there is awful things going on in the world, sometimes something as simple as dressing up and meeting with your friends for some socially distant fun can mean the world.

Seniors are holding virtual proms, small get-togethers, and photoshoots. While these “pandemic proms” are definitely not the same as a traditional prom, they make up a fraction of the loss. Couples have help sweet photo shoots showing off their matching attire and their plans if prom had been “normal”.

Even though this is not exactly what anyone had hope for, these small acts are truly making the difference to many seniors.

Many of these pandemic proms have been documented on social media; for example, TikTok has blown up this spring season with prom videos. From backyard love stories to groups of friends dressing up together on Zoom,

many have made the best of these unfortunate circumstances.

On Instagram, many have seen heartwarming video montages of seniors’ memorable four years and their final goodbyes to high school. These posts may include sports events, choir, musicals, teachers, friends, and recently, prom pictures!

Everyone knows the most crucial part of prom is the pictures, something to remember when you have gone off to college, and are able to look back. With the new rules, many people are able to meet with their friends and host these picture-taking sessions in an attempt to create a fun and memorable “pandemic prom.”

The Class of 2020 Share Their Favorite RHS Memories

“Some of my favorite memories are from my freshman year gym class doing the project adventure outside with Spargo, being a part of the girls lacrosse team all four years, participating in Mini-THON and this year having math with Mr. Meeker and only 7 other people! All of these things have made me feel like I am a part of a family. I have so many good memories from RHS, and I am just sad I won’t be adding anymore.”

“Some of my favorite memories of high school would definitely have to be sports. My freshman year when the girls soccer team won the county tournament was one of the best memories I’ve had. It was so great to be a part of such a competitive team.

Through the four years on the girls soccer team I was able to make so many friends. I’m going to miss all the team room dance parties and pregame traditions. Other fun memories I have are participating in Mini-Thon; it was such a great experience staying up all night for such a great cause. Another great memory I made in high school was being in Ms. Navarro’s class. She was a great teacher and always made Fiona Sparano and I cry laughing almost every class.

We certainly were not the best at Spanish, but she made it so much fun.”

“One of my favorite memories from my time at Roxbury High School has to be going to football games on Friday nights. It was always really fun waiting for Friday nights in the fall to come along so my friends and I could get together before the games to get ready and go together, and I’ll definitely miss that experience next year. No matter what the score of the game was, my friends and I always had a good time. It was also really cool to see the student body come together to show their school spirit and have fun together.

Attending the last football game my senior year was definitely a bittersweet moment, but it makes me smile when I look back on those Friday nights standing on the bleachers with my best friends.”

The Class of 2020 Share Their Favorite RHS Memories

By Sam Medina Arts and Entertainment Editor “Some of my favorite memories from my high school years are mostly with all of the teams I have been on. Whether it be soccer, basketball, or lacrosse, I’ve always had the best relationships with my teammates. I will never forget our numerous team bonding events like states breakfasts and dinners, pre-game dance parties, and post-game celebrations. I’ll always remember the times when we won conference for soccer my sophomore year, as well as conference for lacrosse my junior year. The one thing I will forever cherish is the chemistry we all had and what we were able to accomplish on and off the field. Some more memories I will never forget are the car rides every single day whether it be going to school or coming home from sports. It was these little things, like driving Carly Corrente, Cameron and Kendall Fehsal to school every day and then driving the Fehsal’ss and Vanessa Suarez’s homes, that kept me wanting to go to school every single day. We would blast the music to wake ourselves up, and we would talk for hours. I consider these kids some of my best friends and I will hold on to these small moments forever.”

We grew a bond over talking about sushi places and which type of sushi was the best to eat. I felt like I could tell her anything personal and she would be there for me.”

I also remember going to the Dare To Dream Conference last year in May, and I was a keynote speaker. I will always remember being a keynote speaker and helping out at the Raritan Headwaters.”

“I know I came here in December 2019, but I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first came to this school. I remember having Weber for the 2nd marking period to the 4th and most of the jokes that were being told to us. Even when some major world events happened, we managed to keep together as a class and bonded through his stories and enjoyed watching documentaries and videos with him.

Although I came rather late, I would like to say that it doesn’t matter if you’re new to the school or come late you are still valid to make memories even if it was for a tad bit.

No one should treat you any differently because you’re a part of the class 2020. I didn’t make many friends, but I did show I can do it and managed to get all A’s in the fourth marking period and pushed my way through to pass for my senior year. I’m very proud of Roxbury High School for pushing me and the class of 2020 and making everything from impossible to possible. Also, Mr. Weber is the best teacher.”

An Interview With Meagan Byrne, Sergeant-at-Arms What was it like being sergeant-at-arms for the class of 2020 student council?

Being the sergeant-at-arms for the class of 2020 is truly an honor. I love working with my peers to create a healthy environment for all of us to learn! I think that it is super important to keep everyone’s opinions included because everyone’s voice matters. I really enjoyed coming together with the group to come up with fundraisers for events like prom.

It definitely got stressful at times when we had tons of events taking place, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

How has being a part of the student council changed you?

Being a part of the student council has changed me into more of a responsible and independent young adult. I’ve learned ways to better public speak as well as being able to put myself out there more.

Being in a leadership position has shown me what it is like to make tough decisions not only for me, but for the class of 2020 and the rest of the school.

What have you learned about responsibility being involved in the student council?

I have learned numerous things about responsibility. First, a lot of people depended on the student council to plan such events like prom, fundraisers, t-shirt sales, class rings, etc. Oftentimes, we would have to give up on doing fun things outside of school because we had responsibilities for the council. There are always so many decisions that have had to made, which made me realize that pleasing everyone isn’t completely possible.

What are some of your favorite memories from your highschool years?

Do you have any high school regrets?

The only regret that I have in high school was not living life to the fullest.

Oftentimes, I worried too much about my grades or what others would think or say about me. I would avoid going out to stay up all night studying for an exam, or preparing for a project. While doing school work is very important, it is also necessary to take a break and live life a little. High school really does go by so quickly, so I do believe it is important to live for every moment and take it all in.

What are you most proud of accomplishing/taking part in during your high school years?

I am most proud of playing on the soccer team that won the conference team my sophomore year, as well as playing on the lacrosse team and getting 15 wins twice as well. My teammates mean everything to me, and I am so glad I got to live these moments with them.

An Interview With Meagan Byrne, Sergeant-at-Arms live every moment with no regret. Our senior year was cut short, and we missed out on so many opportunities. Our last day of school was just a typical day and I think a lot of us took it for granted and expected to be back. Even without being in a pandemic, senior year goes by in literally the blink of an eye. So don’t be upset over the little things because, in the end, it really doesn’t matter. I would say go to the football games and cheer the loudest, go to homecoming, dress up for the Halloween parade, go to prom, join a club, play a sport, and try new things. I promise it is worth it!

What are you excited about most for the future?

I am most excited about the challenges college will bring in my immediate future, but I am also looking forward to the distant future in becoming a nurse and making an impact on society.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan on going to DeSales University, where I will study to become a nurse as well as continuing my soccer career.

After graduating, I want to be either a travel or trauma nurse. My overall goal is

to fall in love, start a family, adopt a lot of puppies, and live happily!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank?

Friends, teachers, others in your community?

I would like to thank my parents for constantly motivating me to give my best work. I would also like to thank my coaches. Most of them have had such a huge impact on my life and I cannot thank them enough. My teachers have always been there for me through it all, so I am truly grateful for everything they have done. I would lastly like to thank my best friends for creating some of my greatest moments in life that I will forever cherish.

What Will We Remember About The Year 2020?

By Amy Acevedo News Editor 2020 has been a year that has been anything but normal. As the world continues to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, popular trends and fashions have still found ways to make themselves prevalent. As the class of 2020 moves on to colleges and careers, let’s take a look at what has made this year so unique.

Many highly-anticipated movies were set to premiere in 2020, but this was halted by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

Numerous film studios have turned to having “at home” premieres so viewers can watch safely from their homes. While this may have hurt the industry in some ways, more people may be choosing to watch movies to combat boredom. So far in 2020, the Sony film Bad Boys for Life has been the most profitable.

One thing that hasn’t suffered from quarantine is music. Many artists have continued to release their songs as they regularly scheduled to, and others are continuing to produce even more in at-home studios.

For example, collaborations like Stuck With U by Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande have resulted

from this pandemic. However, this year’s chart-topping song, so far, has come from somewhat of a newcomer to the mainstream music scene. Roddy Ricch’s The Box spent eleven weeks at the Billboard Hot 100, making it number one so far. However, there are still plenty of opportunities for other artists to try and claim the throne. This is one of many songs that has found popularity on TikTok and continued to grow thanks to the platform.

Since many young people have traded cable TV boxes for subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, staying at home has made the streaming services become even more popular.

Some of the year’s most popular shows among teenagers originate from or are offered on these platforms. This year dramas like Riverdale, Outer Banks, and 13 Reasons Why reigned supreme. Sports have become a rarity on television, as all major leagues have been forced to postpone, suspend, or cancel their seasons. This has not stopped many networks, however, from airing some of the most iconic games from various teams or individual sports.

When a majority of the United States went on lockdown in late-March, after much of the world already had, today’s most popular apps like TikTok saw a major boost in the amount of content being posted. Kids decided to bring their older family members in to participate in the app’s biggest trends. YouTube has also seen a spike in posts, as many teens are creating channels from the comfort of their own homes.

A Letter to the Class of 2020: Mrs. Barbato-Connolly FID, and remote learning. All semblance of normalcy vanished into thin air quite abruptly.

Seniors, Think about your life in 2016, when you first started high school. I will give you a moment to remember who your crush was, your favorite shows, movies, and music...

Seems like a world ago! Feel free to laugh at your younger self, too. We all do—especially our hairstyle choices! We had a memorable start to your high school career together. I loved having you in Freshman Seminar and World History Honors in 9th grade. Or even in US IA in the 10th grade. I can remember where all of you sat in my classroom and all of the good times we had, including field trips. Then when you began this school year, I was there for you as you began applying for college, writing those extra special letters of recommendation. I reminded you of the power of kindness as your keynote speaker at the NHS induction in November. I advised you in the Equal Rights Advocacy (ERA) and Junior State of America (JSA) Clubs. I talked about prom dresses and dates with you in the new year. I’ve been here all along, rooting you on and offering advice when you need it. I even promised you that I’d be there at your graduation to pose in celebratory photos with you. But six months into the school year that all changed. Your “typical” high school experience became atypical. Overnight it seemed we had moved to social distancing,

Now we’re living in extraordinary times.

Reflecting upon history often brings with it perspective, parallels, and possible answers to the questions concerning us. I’m reminded of journalist Tom Brokaw's 1998 book called The Greatest Generation. This is the generation of individuals who were born between 1901-1927—whose formative years were during the crisis years of the 20th century—which included labor unrest, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. This was also a time of great change in technology and communication. Innovation was the name of the day. Telephones, radios, movies, automobiles, new music genres, and fashion trends challenging social norms were the delight of young people... until it wasn’t. Economic and political turmoil changed the world. The Great Depression hit by 1930, turning lives upside down.

Teenagers, needing to support their families, dropped out of school to work in factories or on farms. Education, and all of the “normal” childhood experiences, changed.

A longitudinal study published in 1974 by Glen Holl Elder, Jr. found that even though this generation suffered tremendous hardships, they emerged as incredibly resilient and well adjusted adults, focused on making the world a better place for everyone. It is because they learned to overcome adversity and face challenges with open eyes and hearts that they succeeded. Because of their strength and resolve, they adoringly became known as the Greatest Generation. But they were also humble. They did not brag or celebrate their individual achievements. They praised the community effort. I see this in all of you. You have been the most socially conscious group of students I’ve worked with to date. Before the pandemic, you advocated for human rights in the ERA Club, argued for political inclusiveness in

JSA, fought for action on climate change, and demonstrated your concern for the community when you changed the focus of the Rox-Thon to supporting Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown. Each time, you worked together to achieve your goals.

You’re about to be sent off into a world where a pandemic has interfered with your traditional rites of passage, but you’ve already begun to adapt. You have been patient, awaiting word from the school administration about prom, graduation, and end-of-year activities. You have been innovative: participating in Google Meets during virtual school, Zoom with your family on holidays, and caravans of cars for birthday parades. You’re demonstrating resilience already. The unemployment rate is 14.7%, the highest it’s been since the Great Depression, but I see many of you still working hard at the jobs you held throughout the year and even looking to join the workforce as an essential worker at places like ShopRite. You have not been deterred by the shuttering of college campuses this spring. You’re still looking forward to the experience ahead in the fall, though cautiously optimistic. That is what makes you all special: your strength, innovation, drive, and sense of community.

They say that history doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme. What I see here, is a group of young people who have made the best out of a difficult situation. I’m so proud of all of you and wish you all the very best in your endeavors after high school, no matter what you pursue! I can already tell that our nation will be left in good hands in the future. Thank you for being extra special, Class of 2020, and I look forward to reading the book written about you: “The Next Greatest Generation.”

“Over the last 3 years as a leader on mini-THON/Rox-THON, I have experienced some amazing opportunities and memories that I will never forget. They include—but are not limited to—our annual THON Weekend field trip, everyday after school during the two weeks leading up to our event, the Fall Festival in 2018, our tour of Goryeb Children's Hospital, and the mini-THON Leadership Summit in 2018.

All of these memories allowed our leadership team to grow closer together, which has allowed us to create a better foundation for our club. They have also helped teach me the importance of what we are doing and how our efforts help the families who need it the most. Being a part of such an amazing organization has helped me grow and develop in more ways that I could have ever imagined. I used to be shy and soft-spoken as a freshman, but because of all of the things I have learned and all the support I have had over the last few years, I am able to confidently stand up in front of 1,500 people and give a speech. The club brings together the most amazing student leaders that Roxbury has to offer, and it has introduced me to my best friends. This year, we lost Henry Aulenbach, a child who was battling cancer who we were working very closely with. Not long after his passing, the directors of Rox-Thon had dinner with Mrs. Aulenbach, his mother, and she shared with us the financial struggle that her family experienced in order to send her oldest sons to college while also staying home to take care of Henry. Having moved to a smaller house prior to Henry’s diagnosis, they were lucky enough to have less of a financial burden associated with their mortgage, but not all families can say the same. She told us that what we do will not save every child, but it does have the potential to ‘save a family,’ and that is why we do what we do. I will truly miss this club most of all.”

A Letter to the Class of 2020: Lauren Hefferon, General Council Historian

To The Class of 2020, This year most definitely did not end the way we had all hoped. Whether you spent your years in a continuous rush for the era of high school to end, or whether you indulged in each second, I believe we can all feel this shocking and unfortunate ending to our high school career.

When you look at the students that make up our class, you can easily see the diversity in interests, personalities, talents, and well, memories. Each of you are wonderful individuals that mean so much to our school community. The fields of RHS hold the hard work, the sweat, the tears, and most importantly, the memories of all of our athletic Gaels as well as our Marching Gaels. The RHS Music Wing

holds the talented vocals of the Choir Department, movements of our dancers, and instrumental melodies of our bands and orchestra, and all of our Performing Arts Gaels. Each RHS classroom holds golden memories from the plethora of clubs and groups they host every day.

From Rox-THON to Student Council.

From Junior Statesmen of America to Spanish and French Club. Literary Magazine, Model Congress, Equal Rights Advocacy, Environmental Club, Roxbury Review, National Honors Society, Ski and Snowboard, and so many more. The variety of talent and success that RHS has fostered through the years is unmatched. I know every single student who reads this can think of at least one positive memory from Roxbury, whether with friends, family, teachers, or anyone else in our amazing community. Although the negatives will always remain, the positives will always overcome. We will never forget the roar of cheers heard from the FNL stands, or the twelve hour countdown at Rox-Thon.

We will never forget the bell ringing our release at the end of a long and studious school day. Ask yourself: what is your memory?

none of us would have ever wished for this to happen, I think we can all agree it proved to us that we should never take anything for granted. If you told yourself a year ago that a worldwide pandemic would flush away our senior year, certainly you wouldn’t believe it. Losing a large stepping stone in this journey to the future is difficult, but we also have so much to be thankful for. With that, I remind the Class of 2020 that this was our year of change. A year that came with ups and downs, a year that came with disappointments and many tears, but most importantly a year of history. Can any of your other friends and family say they lost the ending of their senior year due to a pandemic that flooded the nation? No? I didn’t think so. Each student, part of a Class of 2020, whether it be in high school or college, throughout the nation has felt what we are feeling. A bittersweet ending.

Though we may have not all had a proper goodbye with one another, I can already see the success we will all produce on our own. We are living through history, each and every day. We are the change, we are the movement, we are the future.

Class of 2020, I am so proud of you.

Throughout life, things will most certainly not go your way from time to time. We have all been able to personally experience this in the events that occurred during our senior year. Looking Back at the Class of 2020’s Kindergarten & Freshman Years

By Amy Acevedo News Editor If you think back thirteen years, you’ll recognize that a lot has changed.

Technology, fashion, pop culture, and overall style have greatly evolved throughout these years. Thinking back even only four years, anyone can tell how much our world has changed. 2007 and 2016 are significant, more importantly, because they are the years the class of 2020 began kindergarten and high school, respectively.

The highest-grossing film of the year in 2007 was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. In 2016, it was Captain America: Civil War. Both movies have made well over $900 million dollars, the Marvel film surpassing $1 billion. So far in 2020, the Sony film Bad Boys for Life has been the most profitable.

Music has also changed a lot since 2007, with many new artists becoming apart of the mainstream music scene. Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable” was the Billboard Hot 100 number one thirteen years ago. Four years ago, “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber was the year’s top-charting track. Both artists are still relevant today. This year Roddy

Ricch’s “The Box” spend eleven weeks at the Billboard Hot 100, making it number one so far. However, there are still plenty of opportunities for other artists to try and claim the throne.

Broncos. The German National Team were the Women’s FIFA World Cup winners in 2007. This event did not compete for the men in 2007, nor was it competed for either group in 2016.

In 2007, kids said goodbye to fan-favorites like “That’s So Raven” and “Drake & Josh.” They also were introduced new favorites like “iCarly,” “Wizards of Waverly Place,” and “Phineas and Ferb.” “Stranger Things,” “The Fosters,” and “Pretty Little Liars” were popular shows among teens in 2016. This year dramas like “Riverdale,” “Outer Banks,” and “13 Reasons Why” reign supreme.

2007 also had some fashion trends that are drastically different than today. Sweater dresses, Ugg boots, long scarves, and oversized sunglasses were the most popular. White sneakers, ripped jeans, baseball caps, and bomber jackets were among the most items in 2016, which are trends that are somewhat still popular four years later. Much of the fashion trends in 2020 have been inspired by the iconic looks of the ‘90s, yet many people choose to create styles of their own.

For sports fans, unfortunately, all sporting events have ceased for the time being. Before the coronavirus pandemic overtook the world, athletic events were in full swing. The Boston Red Sox were the 2007 World Series Champions, and the Chicago Cubs won the title in 2016.

The Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007 and the Pittsburgh Penguins won it nine years later. 2007 saw the San Antonio Spurs win the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who would later win the title in 2016. The Indianapolis Colts won the Super Bowl.

Much has changed from 2007 to 2016, and again to 2020. iPods and Gameboys have been exchanged for iPhones and car keys.

Accounts on Club Penguin and Webkinz are now no longer used, but instead, more time is spent on Instagram and TikTok. While a lot may have changed, a lot has also stayed the same.

During this time, it is important to recognize the hard work, dedication, and determination that the senior class has always shown that will lead them to much success in the future: just like it did in kindergarten, freshman year, and today!

Teaching, grading, creating. All things that a teacher does. But what makes them so special? They love, they help, and they provide.

Appreciation is the recognition and enjoyment of the qualities of someone; in this case, for teachers. On behalf of the class of 2020, I want to take a moment to show our appreciation. We recognize all teachers who have spent time assisting students in becoming stronger academically. We recognize all teachers who have provided words of wisdom to students, which guide them through hard times. We recognize all teachers who have taught students, allowing them the tools to pursue successful careers.

All teachers, all grade levels, aids, nurses, and principals, the Class of 2020 says THANK YOU! Without the courage, patience, and love you have for teaching, we would never be able to have our successes in education. Especially at this time, as we are faced with the challenge of learning through a computer screen.

Currently, the appreciation we have for you and the work you do is higher than ever. Only teachers can consistently put smiles on our faces through the screen, speak inspirational words, and keep us busy during these challenging times. True heroes, true helpers, true inspirations.

As a senior who is leaving high school, or virtually leaving, I would like to say my thanks to all of the teachers who have helped me become the person I am today.

The Graduations Must Go On: A Look at Graduations During the Pandemic number of coronavirus cases.

By Amy Acevedo News Editor The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has caused a host of problems for schools and school districts all across the United States and the world. Remaining events for the 2019-2020 school year have been postponed or canceled, and it is likely that there will be major changes made if students return for the 2020-2021 school year. Teachers and students alike have also had to learn to adapt to online learning and the challenges it presents.

While there have been many upsets with the cancelation of the school year, most of these have affected the senior class. New Jersey’s governor, Phil Murphy, is attempting to bring some happiness back to the senior class and honor them properly by proposing new ideas for commencement ceremonies. These ideas were initially brought up in May but has been reassessed as the state monitors the

When Governor Murphy initially proposed the idea of hosting outdoor graduation ceremonies in July, he placed a limit on the number of family members that would be allowed to accompany each student. He later increased the maximum capacity to 500, while still mandating that ceremonies be hosted outdoors. This followed Murphy’s decision in the same week to lift the state’s stay-at-home order, which first was implemented mid-March.

Currently, Murphy has stated that ceremonies can begin as early as July 6th.

With that, he stated that it would be up to each individual school to determine regulations for their ceremonies.

However, the governor recommends that people maintain social distancing at the event, wear masks, and have their temperatures checked upon arrival.

Although an announcement like this could raise hope, it is important to

remember that the state is still warning that COVID cases could rise. However, this offered a glimmer of hope to high school students across the state who planned to receive their diplomas in front of friends and family. No matter where or how ceremonies take place, it is a guarantee that the state and school districts across New Jersey will try their hardest to host a ceremony that will properly honor the Class of 2020 for their twelve years of hard work and dedication.

With the permission of Governor Murphy Roxbury High School decided to host a virtual graduation ceremony on June 22, followed by three in-person graduation ceremonies. These ceremonies, which will each host about 100 people, are set to take place on Wednesday, July 8th with a rain date of Thursday, July 9th.

Though the celebrations may be different from years past, there is no doubt that the Class of 2020 will get the proper send-off they deserve!

The Class of 2020 Prepares for College During Unusual Times

By Sam Medina Arts and Entertainment Editor At the end of every school year, seniors all around the world begin preparing for college. They talk to their roommates, purchase supplies, and pack their belongings all while taking in the last few months of high school. This year our senior class has to prepare a little differently. They have to adapt to new situations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and go into their freshman year of college without knowing what to expect.

As of now, nobody really know what the fall semesters will hold. Many are left wondering if classes will be held in-person, online, or a combination of both. Senior Lauren Ernst says that her

school, Montclair State University, has three different plans ready. The plan they will ultimately choose is still TBD. The first plan is to go back to school as scheduled and have a normal fall semester of college. The second plan is having a hybrid schedule, which means that most of the class will be online with a few in-person meetings. The third plan is to have the semester completely online, similar to what we are doing right now at RHS. These plans may vary for every school, and it will all depend on what each state is going to allow and the status of the pandemic.

Many seniors are going into colleges with dreams of playing sports. Seniors Lauren Ernst and Meagan Byrne, who plan to play soccer in college, have been training at home for the upcoming season.

Team spirit and friendships are important to build in a team, so they have been getting to know their teammates through the video conference application Zoom.

Another senior, Allison Fleming, has been preparing for her college placement tests and figuring out what clubs and activities she would be interested in. She has also been planning her dorm room decor with her roommate. Many seniors like Fleming, Ernst, and Byrne are keeping in touch with their roommates and planning the division of expenses between them.

Our seniors are trying their best to remain optimistic despite the situation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. They are ready for the future, they are eager to start the next chapter of their lives, and we know that they will achieve greatness no matter what their first semester looks like!

Roxbury Establishes Adopt-a-Senior Program

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting some beloved end-of-the school year traditions, many finding creative ways to celebrate the graduating Class of 2020. One such celebration is the “Adopt a Senior” program. This program originally started on Facebook, where organizers asked Roxbury parents to post a bio with their graduating child’s interests so another family will “adopt” them. The “adopting” family was asked to give their senior a gift basket and do their

best to make their experience as a senior special.

This program is extra meaningful to seniors, who have missed out on other traditions. This program was created to celebrate and congratulate seniors on their hard work the past four years. Many seniors are given their favorite candies, gift cards to their favorite places, while some even went all out and decorated their cars and bought them balloons!

Roxbury Athletics Celebrates Seniors season.

By Carla Farris Sports Editor The springs sports seasons came to a sudden end this year after the COVID-19 outbreak called for virtual learning across the country. For some, it just meant they would have to wait until next year. But for others, it meant saying goodbye to a sport they had loved for a long time. However, Roxbury spring sports teams knew they had to have a proper send-off for their seniors.

One of the traditions our athletes were sad to miss was senior day. A day in which each senior is assigned a group of underclassmen who must dress up, decorate their locker, and get gifts and goodies for their upperclassmen in accordance with their selected theme. This usually happens towards the end of the season but with no season in sight, there were many were uncertain this tradition would happen.

The softball team didn’t let this stop them, though. Each senior still received their senior day, just slightly different than the ones they had experienced before. The underclassmen surprised them at their houses with posters, treats, and theme-abiding t-shirts. Though the tradition was socially distanced, the team kept it alive and continued the spirit to honor the seniors who lost their last

Of course, there were many other ways in which teams showed their support for this year’s seniors. The outdoor Track and Field team, the largest sports program at Roxbury High School, took to social media in order to give out some recognition. Each senior was given a ‘Senior Spotlight’ upon request.

These senior spotlights were posted on the Roxbury Track and Field Instagram page (@roxbury-xctf) and included seasons participated, college and intended major, go-to snack, favorite athlete, favorite memory, and so many more. 13 of this year’s seniors were highlighted and their impact will forever be ingrained in the Rox XCTF spirit.

They weren’t the only ones posting for their seniors, though. The boys’ lacrosse team dedicated a post to the 5 seniors who will be leaving them this year. The graphic included their name, number, position, and a picture of them in action.

They captioned the picture “Today we honor our 2020 class on what should be senior day. Thank you for everything you’ve done to make our program better” (@roxburylacrosse on Instagram).

The baseball team took matters into their own hands as many of the upperclassmen, including Landon

Monro, who is involved in the TV class, made honorary videos commemorating the seniors. Monro’s documentary began with the words “Dear Baseball” and showed the journey he and other seniors have taken from the very beginning of their baseball career to now when many of them will part from the team for their final year.

The girls’ lacrosse team managed to provide both senior spotlights and senior days for all the girls, seeing as the team will be losing a whopping 16 players this year.

Each senior received an Instagram post dedicated to them (@roxbury_girls_lacrosse) that included a bit of information and some fun trivia about their hobbies and what they enjoy. Similar to the softball team, the underclassmen still gave their seniors the senior day they deserved by surprising them with posters and snacks, which were also posted on the Instagram page.

While it is certainly a sad time to have to say goodbye to something that’s been ingrained in your life, our seniors know they are very much loved by the Roxbury community. Through these experiences, we have learned that, as a team, we can persevere through any challenges the world throws our way. On that same note, we know that there is no love that amounts to the love within Roxbury sports.

“Roxbury softball has given me more memories than I can count. Representing Roxbury High School for the past 4 years has not only been a lot of fun, it has been a privilege. Pre-game concerts in the team room, in between inning dance parties, playing under the lights for night games, and of course playing the game everyday with the girls that have become my family leaves me with the greatest memories as I am about to graduate. Wearing that blue and gold number 13 jersey, putting in my bow, and walking out to the field will be missed, but never forgotten. I am going to continue my softball career in college, but I have to give great thanks to Roxbury softball for all the laughs it has given me and the lessons that it has taught me!”

Class of 2020 Sports: Captains’ Highlights

“My name is Tiffany Zieba. I am a senior, graduating from Roxbury High School this year. I am proud to say I started the Roxbury High School Gymnastics program my freshman year. I competed as an independent for the first two years until going into my Junior year I was able to bring a Gymnastics program and team to Roxbury with the help of Mr. Mason. In September, I finally had a team and was able to compete with teammates!

The gymnastics team has grown significantly, and I am beyond proud of every accomplishment the team and all my teammates have made. This year as a 2nd year team and working hard, we took home the North Jersey Group B Championship and also the North New Jersey Sectional Title. The first time in 26 years that a team outside of Bergen County has taken that title.

Not only did we take home the Sectional Team Title, I myself placed first All Around Champion at both Groups and Sectionals!

We were 10th in the State of NJ. I was also one of eight gymnasts selected to be on the New Jersey High School Gymnastics Team to represent our state at High School Gymnastics Nationals. Unfortunately, that was canceled in May. I will forever be proud about the way this program grew, and I am more than excited

As a graduating senior this year and a captain of the girls basketball and lacrosse team, I feel it is important to recognize our senior student athletes who have also played a role as a Roxbury captain. to continue being our teams brightest fan.

Not only was I the captain of the gymnastics team the last two years, I am proud to say I was the Captain of the Roxbury Track and Field program.

I am honored to have been apart of a program so welcoming. The Track and Field program has brought on some of the biggest accomplishments in my high school career.

All three sports seasons has allowed me to achieve one of the biggest athletic honors, I will be graduating as a 12-Varsity Letter Athlete.

I am blessed to have been apart of something so amazing with some of the best coaches. Thank you Roxbury athletics for giving me my best memories and greatest friends!”
