Yoyogi Bath House and Manga Cafe Tokyo, Japan The site is based in Tokyo, Japan.

Takeshita Street is a modern Japanese shopping street which has been highly influenced by American culture. With this project I aim to bring traditional Japanese culture back to the high street. This iteration gives most interest to the street and creates a landmark within Takeshita street.

This landmark will act as a break among the very busy street and give a chance to focus on experiential instead of commercial activity.

The baths will be based on traditional Japanese lanterns (Toro). The exterior will be clad in charred Japanese Cedar wood (Shou Sugi Ban). The interior will be clad in Japanese Cypress wood. The baths will use Towada stone, changing colour with the application of water. The structure will be formed with hempcrete and concrete.

The Beacon Dance Hall and Care Centre is situated between Halifax’s Borough Market and town hall. It links to the other performance spaces in Halifax as an informal space where people of all ages can participate in dance, aiming to engage both young and old by developing and maintaining their cognitive and physical ability.

This retrofit scheme retains the majority of the existing concrete frame, whilst making room for an auditorium and dance hall with a lightweight, expressive addition on top reflecting the building’s internal purpose. The facade is made up of a gabion wall filled with material extracted from the existing building.
