EDITOR’S WELCOME

editor’s WELCOME W e invite you to take a step not only into summer but into the future. The world has never been more connected and more importantly women have never been more united. Gone are the days of male dominance - bye Felicia! This issue brings a wealth of inspiration and youthful aspiration from women across the UK who demonstrate that GRL PWR and all that it stands for is here to stay. We indulge in everything Paris Fashion Week (PFW) has to offer - ’70s are back with an injection of lively prints and women wearing the trousers for another season. Trend forecasting doesn’t finish there as we talk all things jewellery, after all it’s the little things that count! Diamonds Are Foreveryone has never been more relevant… step aside Kim Kardashian, ROX is breaking the internet. Like women, style possesses no limits. We take to the streets with Tara Maynard whose unforgiving style and confidence delivers an essence of summer fun. Whatever your vibe may be, Tara’s playful take on fashion will have your #OOTD oozing with an essence of female power. From lustrous venues to decorative gimmicks we’ve got ideas for you that will surpass the heady heights of the Royal Wedding. Why stop at that when you could

take Meghan Markle’s crown on the beauty front too? Industry expert Mira Parmar demonstrates that sought after no make-up make-up look & Sara Hill reveals her worldrenowned Yoga Skin secrets. Summer bodies are made in the winter? Not when The Fitt Principle has anything to do with it. As the world becomes more transparent in every sense of the word diets are out of the window and women are loving themselves for who they are. Women everywhere really are 'living their best lives' and it wouldn’t be The Social Issue if we didn’t live our best lives through that of lifestyle blogger Freya Killin. Let’s delve into some culture as Freya talks us through an Instagrammers guide to L.A., Bali, Dubai and Barcelona. The art of destination dressing is crucial for that perfect holiday snap. The vitalness of our prevalent social world is no longer one we can be ignorant TAYLOR BROWN to, so why not celebrate @styledbytaytay all that it has gifted us? In FOLLOWERS: this edition of ROX Woman 3.6k that’s exactly what we have done. I hope that you enjoy the abundance of inspiration this issue has to offer.

GIMME MORE We can’t seem to shake this trend off but we aren’t complaining. In the last few months layering has captured the attention of Instagrammers from around the globe. It’s fair to say layering is not going anywhere this SS19 so don’t hold back. Layering was perfectly done by Paco Robanne & Giambattista Valli this season. LINK UP If there’s one trend to adopt this SS19 it’s the industrial chic vibe of chain jewellery. We are crushing on new as ROX introduces some 1990’s inspired chains. Virgil Abloh has coined the look as it’s seen throughout Off White’s runway. The look lends itself to layering or can hold it’s own worn individually. Take a step back in time and channel your inner 2003 Beyoncé for a fabulously grunge look. If it’s good enough for Beyoncé it’s good enough for us and we are Crazy In Love!

PEGGY GOU GOT

famous

Her track “It Makes You Forget” became one of the most unforgettable tracks of 2018, she is the first Korean female DJ to play at Europe’s temple to dance music, the notorious Berghain and she’s just been initiated into the TAG Heuer family as the @peggygou face of the Formula 1 Lady. Laura McCreddie-Doak sits down with the inimitable Peggy Gou. 631k PEGGY GOU

FOLLOWERS:

Laura McCreddie-Doak: In 2016 you seemed to come from nowhere but that obviously isn’t the case – how did you start DJ-ing and what was it in 2016 that catapulted you into the limelight? I first started to learn how to DJ about 10 years ago in Korea. My boyfriend at the time started to teach me how to beatmatch with CDs. When I moved back to London a couple of years later I picked it up again and started to take it seriously. LM-D: For anyone who doesn’t know you how would you describe your sound? I never know how to answer this! It’s a very difficult question for me because I don’t like to define myself or try to describe my style - I just try and let it do the speaking for me. Of course, I have a lot of artists and records that have been a big influence on me, and I have tried to learn from the best. In some ways, I try to collect every sound that I like and let it become something new. So, for me, my taste is just a part of my personality,

not something that can be put into a simple description. But what I have been most proud of, especially with the music I am making now, is that I feel I am making music that really expresses my personality. I am singing on the tracks in Korean and adding more Korean instruments, so that each record is taken from my own experiences and personal tastes. I don’t know how you describe that - it’s just ‘Peggy Gou’! LM-D: In February last year Mixmag said we were in the age of Gou-mania – what do you think it is about you that people love so much? I think people always like to make a connection with someone who is expressing themselves in an honest way, which is what I try to do in my music and style. With me I hope it’s because they are inspired and get a message that if they want to, they can do this too. I see so much that if I post about a topic or experience on Instagram, my followers love to reply and share their own experiences, so it’s inspiring for me too.

LM-D: You said you wanted to be the first female Korean DJ to play the Berghain [generally considered to be the coolest dance music club in Europe, based in Berlin] – why was this so important to you? Because it was such an important place for my own education in electronic music and DJing! In Panorama Bar, which is more the club’s house music room, there was even a spot my friends called ‘Peggy’s zone’. I would stay there, watching my favourite DJs and dancing, for hours and hours. I was always staring at the DJ booth thinking: ‘one day I want to play there!’ It is the club every DJ wants to play, because the crowd there really know and love music – it’s a very special place. LM-D: From other articles I’ve read it seems as though you’ve used your position to help new young musicians (the BUDxSeoul lecture) and speak out about sexism in music – is it important to you that you use your voice and your influence to promote certain causes? I think it’s important for me to share my own experiences and help people in this way. Many women in music experience sexism in all these different ways. I don’t feel that I should be a spokesperson for all women, but if talking 80

www.rox.co.uk

honestly about the challenges I faced helps others then I am happy to do it. But I also like to try and do things by example rather than just talk - I like to support causes by contributing to them, such as the UNICEF campaign I took part in last year and let my work do the talking. I’m definitely happy to get more involved in projects like this to help more young artists, both male and female, if I have the chance to do so. LM-D: What’s with people taking one shoe off at your sets? I have no idea how it started; I have heard many theories! I think maybe it’s because ‘Gou’ and ‘shoe’ rhyme, but it started at Glastonbury in 2017, so who knows! But it’s become a really fun regular thing – it’s amazing to see people waving their shoes during my sets. It actually gave me the inspiration for my label’s name – Gudu – which is a Korean ‘shoe’. I wanted to give a little tribute to the people who have been my most enthusiastic supporters. LM-D: What one track is always guaranteed to get people on the dancefloor? And which track, if someone else played it, would make you leave? Whenever I DJ now I always get the feeling

ROX MAGAZINE

LUXURY WATCH EDIT

that people are waiting for me to play my track ‘It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)’, so I know that if I play that the crowd is really going to give a massive reaction. I am always so surprised and humbled by the reaction to this track - it was a very personal record for me, so it was really amazing to see it connect with so many people. And I don’t want to be mean about anyone else’s music so I won’t name anything that would make me leave – as long as it keeps me dancing it’s all good! LM-D: How did the partnership with TAG Heuer happen and why did you decide to say yes to working with the brand? TAG Heuer reached out to me because they liked how I engaged with my fans, that I had my own style and I am very up front about what I like. I decided to say yes because of course it is one of the greatest watch brands, and their style and vibe was a perfect fit for me. Also I really appreciate any brand that are supporting not only musicians but people from all kinds of culture and sport, as TAG Heuer do with actors, athletes or Formula 1 drivers.

OF COURSE, I HAVE A LOT OF ARTISTS AND RECORDS THAT HAVE BEEN A BIG INFLUENCE ON ME, AND I HAVE TRIED TO LEARN FROM THE BEST LM-D: 2018 was a big year for you – what can we expect from 2019? What gigs are you most looking forward to? Can you confirm or deny a Glastonbury set? In 2019 I am touring a little bit less as I will be taking more time to create and work on some projects. I will be launching my new label, Gudu; my own fashion line, Kirin; and some other big projects I cannot mention yet. Of course, there will be great gigs too - I will be curating some festivals this summer and playing Sonar festival in Barcelona for the first time. I hope wherever it is I play you’ll be able to catch me somewhere! To find out more about Peggy Gou go to www.residentadvisor.net www.rox.co.uk

CHOPARD'S

SECRET WEAPON It is a brand built on a succession of men but today’s greatest influence on the Swiss watch and jewellery brand is one woman – Caroline Scheufele. Words by Laura McCreddie-Doak.

S

ay Chopard and the first thing that comes to mind would probably be dancing diamonds, extremely feminine designs and watches that tread the line between horology and fine jewellery. All of that is down to the imagination of one woman, Caroline Scheufele. Now co-president and creative director, Caroline inherited the business, along with her brother Karl-Frederic from her father Karl Scheufele III. This is the

watch complete with denim strap; something that was a far cry from the usual po-faced attitude to women’s watch design. Caroline’s influence on the brand started as soon as she became vice-president in 1985 alongside her brother, Karl-Frederich. That was the year she designed a clown pendant with diamonds visible in his stomach and set arms and legs. She took it to the watch and jewellery fair at Basel that year and with it kickstarted the brand’s

“THE JOURNEY TO SUSTAINABLE LUXURY, A MULTI-YEAR COMMITMENT TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE LIVES OF THOSE AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN, WHO ARE SO OFTEN FORGOTTEN” man who, in 1963, saw an opportunity to buy up an established watch manufacturer so he wouldn’t have to rely on others for movements. From the beginning the intention was to do everything from design to production in house and also to give as much time and attention to women’s watches as the men’s lines; a move which placed Chopard alongside Cartier as one of the few brands that did both. The seeds were already sewn for Caroline to capitalise on – Chopard differentiated itself with its timepieces, which brought fine jewellery elements, as seen in some of its incredible bracelet watches, into watchmaking. It also had a fashion sensibility – just take a look at the 1972 Jeans

jewellery line, which had been non-existent until then. She then revolutionised the Chopard’s women’s watch business with her idea for a sports watch based on the best-selling Happy Diamonds design, which the brand had been selling since 1976. She thought that younger women were being put off by the high-end nature of the watch and posited that a more sporty steel bracelet watch was the answer. At that time steel and diamonds were not natural bed fellows, being at opposite ends of the value spectrum, but Caroline persisted and in 1993 the Happy Sport was launched. Caroline’s gamble paid off and the watch is now one of the most successful styles made by the brand.

Glamorous, dynamic and with all the right people on speed dial, Caroline has propelled the brand to global recognition thanks to such collaborations as the Cannes Palmes d’Or, which Chopard was approached to redesign in 1998. Caroline’s stroke of genius was to create a selection of unique jewels – the Red Carpet Collection to be previewed on the actresses who walk film festival’s red carpet every year; effectively turning that parade around Le Croisette into a live advert for the brand. And it is Caroline who has spearheaded probably the most important phase in the brand’s history – its eco-commitment. It was all started after a conversation with Livia Firth, founder of eco-solutions company Eco-Age and wife of Colin, who merely asked Caroline where she got her gold from. Embarrassed that she didn’t really know, Caroline took it upon herself, with Livia’s help, to do something about that gap in her knowledge. In 2013, it unveiled The Journey to 84

Sustainable Luxury, a multi-year commitment to improve the environment and the lives of those at the very beginning of the supply chain, who are so often forgotten. The first step was the Green Carpet collection, which used Fairmined gold and diamonds from Responsible-Jewellery-Council certified suppliers, and was showcased on French actress Marion Cotillard. Unsurprisingly its debut was on the Cannes red carpet. “I guess the most complicated step was the first step - the change,” explains Caroline. “We had to tell all our employees that we're going to change production slowly. Those first two kilos that we got to make the first bracelet and pair earrings that Marion was wearing on the red carpet; this gold was handled like a VIP customer visiting the factory.” The next piece to get the Fairmined treatment was a L.U.C Tourbillon QF, which threw up other challenges for the brand. “When it’s high jewellery it is easier because one person is working on the piece with the gold

he does everything from A to Z,” says Caroline, “but when it goes to the production line, like with the watch cases, there cannot be just one person working on the watches, so we’ve had to separate the production lines out.” A diffusion range of jewellery inspired by the Palme d’Or followed as well as another L.U.C watch along with commitments to further mines in Bolivia and Columbia, who were able to achieve certification thanks to Chopard’s support. The big announcement came last year when Chopard took to the stage at Baselworld to announce its commitment to using 100 per cent responsibly sourced gold – a mix of ethical and recycled – in all its jewellery and watches and without upping its prices. It is an unprecedented move for a luxury brand – one that isn’t about profit margins but about using its power and voice to do something that benefits those beyond its moneyed clientele. “Luxury is a choice,” says Caroline. “So on top of that, if you know that this piece has been produced in a way that you can really trace to the very beginning how that was done in the way it should be done, namely ethical, then I think that has much more value.” Caroline hasn’t finished yet, she wants this ethical commitment to run through everything the business does from what the boxes are made from to the way they dispatch things to customers. And she also hopes other luxury brands will follow her lead. “Thanks to what we have been doing with the media we’ve shown that it can be done,” she says. “And there's also a lot of the banks that actually buy the gold that now have programs for philanthropy investments on sustainability and a lot of people are going that way.” In an industry where boardroom tables are dominated by men, it’s amazing seeing a woman not only having an effect on the brand she works for but trying to use her position to affect a change and leading by example. We take a look at the amazing mine-to-wrist story of Hublot’s Big Bang Unico and One Click Paraiba watches.

H

ublot has a reputation for making muscular watches for men who like the reassuring sight of something substantial on their wrist; these aren’t timepieces that slip discreetly under a shirt cuff, they are bold statements. So, its latest launch is a bit of a curve ball – a quartet of watches adorned with one of the most precious stones the Earth can throw up. Hublot has, once again, flirted with the world of jewellery timepieces in its own inimitable style – by coating a Big Bang in Paraiba tourmalines making it the first-ever brand to use baguette-cut Paraibas on a watch. "The Paraiba embodies nature at its most beautiful,” explains CEO Ricardo Guadalupe when asked why Hublot decided to work with these notoriously delicate and rare stones. “It is a stone unearthed from the rich soils of Brazil, a natural alloy of gold, copper and manganese, a captivating blue lagoon colour that holds the gaze in an almost magnetic embrace".

thanks to the efforts of Heitor Dimas Barbosa. An ambitious miner, he spent five years digging in the Paraiba hills in Brazil convinced that there was something special to be found there. He was right – what he unearthed was this fascinating stone that gets its unusual glow from the small amounts of copper found in each gemstone’s chemical composition. These particular tourmalines – there are around 12 other types varying from colourless to a psychedelic pink-and-green mix – are only found in copper-rich areas, such as Brazil, Nigeria and Mozambique, which makes them extremely rare; they are also notoriously difficult to mine. Dynamite can damage the crystals, so they are mined by hand using underground tunnels dug up to 60 metres deep into the earth. As if that wasn’t tough enough, the rough stones are only found in small veins the width of a pencil, which explains why, on average, a single Paraiba tourmaline is mined for every 10,000 diamonds. It was enough of a challenge sourcing the stones, which Hublot receives from a mine in Down the mine the Rio Grande region of Brazil. Thanks to a If you’re not familiar with these mesmerisingly relationship with Pierre Salanitro, one of the most blue stones that is probably because it is a relative influential men in watchmaking you’ve probably newcomer having only been discovered in 1989, never heard of who sources stones and sets for www.rox.co.uk

all major brands. It has an exclusive agreement with an environmentally sustainable mine; this means it complies with ethical standards and also takes steps to ensure the area around the mine isn’t damaged by committing to reforestation and using only clean water for its extraction operations to prevent soil pollution. Having got the stones, Hublot could easily opt for a simple round cut, but instead it decided to go for a watchmaking first and cut the Paraibas into baguettes. Going for the cut Just like the Paraiba, the baguette is a relatively new way to cut a stone. Created in the early 20th century, it was a more directional alternative to a round cut but also, thanks to its shallowness, gave the impression of a larger carat diamond for a more reasonable price. The downside was that because, each of the cuts to make the 14 facets had to be absolutely precise, any poor craftsmanship is instantly obvious. Paraiba tourmalines have an extra dimension of

88

difficulty – the complex faceting structure of the stone that gives you that neon glow combined with the need for the stone to be entirely of a uniform colour makes it very difficult to cut. This is why five times more raw material was required for the initial stone selection, and also why, when each stone was baguette-cut, only 70 per cent of these could be set – 30 per cent were rejected due to breakage or insufficiently uniform quality or colour. The skill needed to cut and set Paraiba tourmalines is why Hublot decided to work with Salanitro. Founded in 1990, by the eponymous Pierre, the company started out life setting for jewellery brands at a time when watch brands were watching the pennies because people weren’t buying luxury mechanicals, favouring cheaper quartz instead. After the watch business picked up, big names started coming to Salanitro to work magic with stones in a way they couldn’t in house. This isn't the first time Hublot has flirted with high-jewellery or worked with Salanitro. They partnered on the Big Bang

Tourbillon Chronograph from last year; a unique piece featuring 380 baguette diamonds each of which had been cut to a slightly different shape so the layout of the stones mimics the pattern of crocodile skin. Which is how Hublot came to trust him with the four Big Bang Paraibas. What women want. Speaking in 2015, CEO Ricardo Guadalupe said that Hublot was “dedicat[ing] ourselves to our ladies’ collection, and our female customers will see a series of new timepieces that will embody the notion of the Art of Fusion, where innovation meets luxury and fashion.” Since then it has introduced its One Click system so women can switch straps as easily as they change outfits; adorned bezels with gemstones in a rainbow of colours and covered dials with embroidered Mexican Dia de Los Muertos skulls.

It may still count boxers, cricketers and golfers as ambassadors, but its watches are being worn by more and more women who don’t want to default to delicate cases in petite sizes with their diamonds. Although these four Paraiba-encrusted watches are unique pieces, it shows that, when Hublot embarks on its own style of highjewellery watches it doesn’t opt for easy solutions but instead does everything it can to create a timepiece that showcases the precious stones in a breathtaking way. And, while not every woman will be able to own a Paraiba-studded stunner, you can get a little of that flair from the incredible stone-set watches that Hublot nonchalantly calls its core collection. And when a core is that beautiful, the rest is just icing anyway. Hublot is available online and at ROX Argyll Arcade, ROX Edinburgh & ROX Newcastle www.rox.co.uk

Glaswegian makeup artist Sara Hill has long been a respected name in the beauty industry, with over 20 years of experience and a glittering client list that would send anybody starstruck. With A-list names including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Grace Jones and Kanye West all on her roster, it’s no surprise that Sara’s makeup skills are in huge demand.

W

ith international clients, catwalk shows, her own makeup brand and a post as beauty editor of Hood magazine under her belt, you’d be right in thinking that Sara’s schedule is pretty busy. She’s also the founder of leading Scottish makeup training school, The Academy of Makeup, with two outposts in Glasgow and Aberdeen, meaning that she spends her spare days travelling between the two institutes to offer her expertise and advice to her trainees. And when she’s not inspiring the next generation of MUAs in person, Sara’s sharing her knowledge and experience on social media, with regular tutorials and stunning makeup looks. Sara champions inclusivity in the beauty industry, firmly believing that makeup should be for everyone of any gender or age, and that it should

be a fun part of life, not a mask or a disguise. “I believe that everyone is beautiful, with or without makeup,” Sara explains. “Makeup is a finishing touch to enhance what you already have – but if you want to go crazy and create a whole new look, then that’s fine too! Makeup is about experimenting and enjoying yourself, finding a look that you love and playing around with styles to see what makes you smile.” Over the past year, Sara’s been responsible for several Instagram-famous beauty trends, like #FreeTheFreckle, #GlitterForGrownUps and #BoyBrows, but nothing could have prepared her for the global overnight success of #YogaSkin, a makeup trend she coined late in 2018 which has already become this year’s signature beauty look. The bespoke, tailor-made element of Yoga Skin also means that literally anybody can wear the look, regardless of skin type, tone or age - so it’s no surprise that the look has become a global success story, all created from Sara’s central Glasgow studio. “It started with coverage in a national newspaper, which was then picked up by a leading UK glossy on New Year’s Day,” says Sara. “From there it just exploded – it went to America, then Thailand, Turkey, France, Russia, Australia, 116

Italy, Greece… it took off! Every day I was seeing it published multiple times in dozens of different languages, my PR team were sending me clipping after clipping. It’s incredible to see and I’m so proud to have created something that so many people are enjoying.” But the worldwide success didn’t stop there; leading beauty vlogger Huda Beauty caught sight of the trend and posted her own version of Yoga Skin, with a video tutorial that’s had almost two million views in a matter of weeks. “So many lovely Scottish bloggers and models all posted their own versions of the look too,” Sara tells us. “I work with these girls very often so it was great to have their support as the trend took off, and it just showed how versatile Yoga Skin really is, literally anybody can wear the look.” For more from Sara, visit www.sarahill.com or follow her on Instagram @sarahillmakeup.

Get the look... Sold? We are too. We asked Sara to give us the rundown on exactly how you can achieve glossy, glowing Yoga Skin for yourself… “Start by applying your regular skincare as normal, and leave it for at least five minutes to settle into your skin. Apply a layer of primer, and then it’s time to get to mixing! What I love about this look is that it’s completely customisable to your needs, preferences and skin type.” Step One: “Create your skin mix. I use a ratio of 60 per cent/70 per cent foundation, 15 per cent facial oil, 10 per cent liquid illuminator, 5 per cent glow drops. If you have dry skin you can also squeeze in a small amount of moisturiser for extra hydration. If you have oily skin you can use less of the skincare mix and

have a higher percentage of foundation in the cocktail.” Step Two: “Massage the mix into your skin using your hands, in layers. Push the mix into the skin to really work it in and to get the blood pumping, creating a natural flush. Let each layer settle for a minute, and build up until you’re happy with the finished effect.” Step Three: “Apply liquid or cream concealer where you feel you need extra coverage, using a fluffy eyeshadow brush for a lighter, more natural effect.” Step Four: “You can powder if you need to, but keep it very minimal. This look is about fresh, dewy skin so only use powder where absolutely necessary.”

SS19 HAIR TRENDS TO START WEARING NOW

From barettes to balayage, we asked Stuart Whitelaw, founder of Mesart Hair in Glasgow to gives us the lowdown on the latest hair trends that should be on your radar this season. 60s Inspired Take a trip back to the 60s with short, cropped styles that defined this era. Think Twiggy with a modern twist. When clients ask us to go for the crop we really make sure they are totally committed to the new look. Many women think cropped hair will be immediately easier but actually it still needs styled and maintained just as much as long hair. Or if you really want to try a bold 60s inspired new look go for baby bangs. These look really modern teamed with padded head bands.

Haute hair accessories Hair accessories were all over the SS19 catwalks and are now street style must-haves. Try the look for yourself with embellished barrettes which look amazing on long and short hair and are perfect for days in between washes or the ideal solution for that awkward “growing out your fringe” stage. 80s inspired padded head bands (Prada started the trend) are everywhere and look great paired with tousled beach waves. If you love a more ladylike, polished look, bows are back. Team with a sleek pony for the ultimate in sophisticated style. Balayage is here to stay Balayage isn’t a new trend, in fact it’s one of the most popular colour requests we receive in both our salons. However, balayage has evolved and is now all about a more refined look. We have developed our signature ‘Backwash Balayage’ to include softer style baby lights that are personalised for each client and produce a more effortless and glossy end result.

Effortlessly undone Deconstructed beachy waves are a personal favourite of mine this season. This look is all about natural movement instead of more defined brushed out curls. It’s all about looking effortless and relaxed. For this look we focus on a soft blow dry and create that effortless textured feel with gentle waves that we finish with a dry oil spray. Colour of the season Summer is the perfect time to embrace warmer Mesart has two salons in Glasgow in Uddingston tones. Think dreamy honey blondes, creamy caramels and & Finnieston. HEALTH

THE FITT PRINCIPLE Leading a healthy lifestyle has never been more in the spotlight with images of avocado and açaí flooding our screens. Taylor Brown caught up with Stephen Fraser, owner of the UK’s trendiest fitness studio, as he talks all things health.

T

he FITT Principle fitness studio has become a sanctuary in Glasgow’s city centre for people bored or intimidated by the commercial gym scene, Stephen explains. The New York loft style creates a unique atmosphere for all our personal training clients and most importantly, there isn’t anyone sitting on their phone or hogging all the weights in the corner! After living in London for nine years, I built up a good idea of what should be expected from gyms and when I moved back up to Glasgow, found that very few of them ticked the same boxes. Taking time to think about the atmosphere people want to train in has been a massive factor in our success. People are bored of macho ‘you can do it’ quotes on walls and as the world evolves with the help of social media, are more aware of how the best gyms in places like London, New York and LA look and operate. My aim is to help bring Glasgow and Scotland, as a whole, up to those standards. Our brand and style of training is honest in its approach. We keep it simple and just offer personal training at the Glasgow studio. We work

with clients to think about their body in terms of mastering skills rather than aesthetics. This could be hitting a certain weight in an exercise, learning gymnastic moves such as chin ups, or training for a sporting event. By doing this, we’ve found people engage more with their training and build the aesthetic definition as a by-product. This also makes people think and cherish their bodies as more than a ‘four week blast’ before a holiday. We pride ourselves on trying to be the client’s last ever PT. Not because they’ll be with us forever but because we have provided them with all the resources, knowledge and habit shifts to go it alone and feel in control of their future. That’s why all our training programmes are bespoke to our clients’ lifestyles. We now work with many business owners and people in the fashion industry who are constantly travelling around the world. To expect them to do a copy and paste six day programme of one hour workouts is just not feasible, so we really take time to analyse their calendar and adapt to make the most efficient workouts we can that will work for them.

FITNESS TRENDS

Leave the quinoa at home as the fitness trends of SS19 as suggested by Stephen Fraser are out of the kitchen. It’s time to see who really is leading that healthy lifestyle out-with their social world, writes Taylor Brown. 1. Reliving your childhood exercises People are gravitating towards picking up the sports or hobbies they did when they were younger. That injection of nostalgia makes people enjoy fitness more and makes them more likely to stick at it for longer. The use of gymnastic equipment, such as the rings, helps to unlock complete control over your body where the more traditional bodybuilding resistance machines can’t. This sense of control makes it a piece of gym apparatus you’ll see a lot more in gyms and studios during 2019. 2. Fitness studios, not gyms It started in 2018, but 2019 will see more boutique style fitness studios springing up to challenge the monopoly of commercial 24/7 gyms. Class and PT based timetables will be the chosen route for a lot of people who are looking for a community instead of the traditional ‘rock up and do your own thing’ gym memberships.

become the norm for your workouts too. Building on the success of people such as Kayla Itsiness and Alexia Clark, people from around the world are wanting to learn from the best and doing it via online training can make that happen. 4. Fewer clubbing holidays and more retreats With a nationwide decline in people drinking, many are looking for experiences of self-care instead of the wild boat party holidays. Expect to see more yoga and fitness retreats popping up abroad or at home and the age range of their attendees to increase. 5. Plant-based meals More and more people are turning to meat alternatives to fuel their diets. With independent companies such as ‘Daring Foods’ leading the charge on plant based fast food alternatives which taste like their meat equivalents, it won’t be long until more and more restaurants or home cooks will be using plant- based products.

3. Workout subscriptions As normal as it is to pay your monthly subscriptions to Spotify or Netflix, this will soon

STEPS TO A

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Diets are no longer the cool girl, it’s all about making small changes to your daily habits that will produce long term affects. Follow these 10 top tips from lifestyle guru Stephen Fraser to make a positive change to your lifestyle #healthisyourwealth. 1. Trust the professional Modern day media is full of quick fix trends that companies have often paid influencers to post on their channels. This mentality of chasing the pound has made our lives as professionals a lot harder. Please only take exercise advice from a qualified personal trainer or nutritional plans from a qualified nutritionist/dietician. Our job is to put your interests at the centre and to create lifestyles that are sustainable. 2. Be honest with yourself When looking to change your current lifestyle, you need to be honest with yourself. I’ve worked with many people in the past who on first meet say their lifestyle is healthy. We then set a task of taking a photo of everything you eat and drink in a week and 7/10 times, it’s not as healthy as they first thought. There is a lot of subconscious snacking, lack of water or hangover meals that could feed a family, not one person! By taking photos, there is nowhere to hide. 3. Extremes never work The key about lifestyle choices, are the fact they are sustainable…for life. They should start with small changes and then build over time as your behaviors change. To go from years of overeating, or doing no exercise, to a highly restrictive diet and the gym five times a week, will end in disaster. You’ll probably do well for maybe a couple of weeks and then fall off the wagon. Ease yourself in gently with the help of professionals who can tailor plans to your level. 4. Habits never die For me, it’s so important for people to start building habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle. You can never completely eradicate habits. The key is to look at cognitively substituting a bad habit with one which is less bad. If you’re someone who goes out every weekend, the idea of becoming a hermit and never going out again is doomed to fail before you’ve even started. Instead of looking at the extremes, change that vodka Red Bull for vodka soda and fresh lime. You’ve instantly turned a 250kcal drink into a 70kcal drink alternative and you won’t be outcast by your friends.

night and at the same time. This allows your body to create habits and start the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates your sleep cycle. 6. Water, water, water Most of us don’t drink enough water every day. With water being essential to carry out body functions, remove waste, and carry nutrients and oxygen around our body, we need to keep ourselves topped up. You can also mistake thirst for hungry which means we run the risk of over eating when we under drink. 7. Creating morning and evening rituals. Rituals can be as simple as planning your food choices the night before or putting a ban on using your phone the hour after you wake up and the hour before you go to bed. These rituals are repeated actions and even small ones like these, grow and accumulate to help you reach the wider goals. 8. Don’t be afraid to say no Say no to drinking or nights out if you don’t feel like doing them. It happens all too often that you wake up from a night out, hungover and think - was that really worth it? Why not use that money from a night out and treat yourself to some self-care. Go get a massage, manicure, buy that book you’ve been wanting to read for ages and decide on the type of night you want to have. 9. Choose your friend group wisely It’s a well known fact that your personality is defined by the circle of close friends you spend most of your time with. This becomes very apparent when there is someone constantly complaining or pulling you into unhealthy situations. It might be hard to make the break, but by distancing yourself from toxic people, your attitude may completely change.

10. If you’re not happy, change it As someone who completely changed their career and outlook at the age of 27, there is never a point in your professional life that you should ‘settle’. If there is something you’re not happy with, whether that’s in relationships or 5. Getting enough sleep Getting enough sleep is such a key factor to keeping work, you have the power to change it. Waking up with a your body operating at 100 per cent. Personally, I think the clear conscience and the drive to tackle the day will mean hours needed for sleep really depends on the person but all your tasks including exercise will not feel like a chore. what’s more important is getting the same amount each

FITNESS APPS

We’d be lying if we said we didn’t spend copious amounts of time on our phones so make sure it’s time well spent. Taylor Brown talks with Stephen Fraser on his top five fitness apps that will aid in your transition to a healthy life.

1. MyFitnessPal (MFP) MyFitnessPal is a perfect app to help you tackle specific calorie requirements. A good gym routine will always fall short unless you’re complementing it with the right nutrition. MFP gives you caloric knowledge of food and will keep you on track if you’re looking to lose, maintain or gain weight.

restrictions help curb those unhealthy habits of constantly scrolling through social media feeds. You can determine how long you’re able to access them in the day. Personally, I keep the duration to no more than two hours a day for all social media apps. 4. Night Shift Again, it’s not an app but a feature on your smartphone. Night Shift is great as if you need to use your phone at night, you can tailor the screen to stop emitting blue light which is the main cause of keeping you awake. By discounting this colour, your body can start producing the hormone levels of melatonin it needs to kick start that feeling of sleepiness. 5. Headspace Alongside physical health, keeping a stable mental state is almost as important. Headspace is a meditation app with sessions ranging from three to 30 minutes long. Covering a varied selection of topics such as anxiety, confidence and sleep, it’s a perfect app to help get some ‘me time’ into your busy lifestyle.

2. Couch To 5k Probably the biggest challenge a new runner faces is not knowing how or where to start. Often when trying to get into exercise, we can overdo it, feel defeated and give up when we're just getting started. Couch to 5K works because it starts with a mix of running and walking to gradually build up your fitness and stamina. Week One involves running for just a minute at a time, creating realistic expectations and making the challenge feel achievable right from the start. 3. Screen Time It’s not an app as such but a feature already in your smartphone settings. Screen time

LA Possibly the most Instagrammable destination I’ve been, I mean the lighting is just next level. If you want that sought-after Golden Hour selfie L.A. is your place. From movie scene coffee shops to dreamy views on the Hollywood Hill Hike it’s photogenic to say the least. Not to mention it boasts some of the worlds’ best shopping avenues. Catch One of the best restaurants I’ve been to – the view over L.A. is just breath-taking (especially at sunset!). If you’re a sushi advocate like me then it’s the place for you, order the flamed sushi and ‘hit me’ dessert (if you know you know). The Ivy Iconic to say the least. I’d certainly dress to impress as you can expect to be dining with some familiar faces (House Wives of Beverley Hills are partial to a lunch there). The champagne upon arrival and stunning iconic rose décor is just a dream! The Butcher, the baker, the cappuccino maker This little place was such an amazing find, it serves the best brunch I’ve had in L.A. So good I visited three times whilst there – the colour burst coffee is a must! The Beverley Hills Hotel Last on the WeHo list but by no means least The Beverley Hills Hotel. The red-carpet entrance, palm print wallpaper and pink poolside restaurant create that Hollywood movie scene. The cabana café by the pool is the ultimate in chic lunching. Sisterfields We found this place early on in our trip and visited five times for brunch, it does the best avocado and eggs. Rise and grind early as there's usually a queue! Finns Beach Club What a place this is! Spend all day chilling on double beds poolside with bottomless food and cocktails, listening to live music whilst watching the sunset AND hearing the waves from the beach... unreal! Favourite hotel? I love staying in the Malmaison or the Vermont! Both equally as chic. Best brunch spot? The Botanist for brunch is the best! It’s located amongst the hustle and bustle of lots of other bars and restaurants so it’s super fun and lively. The view is also very Instagrammable… what more could you want? Unsung hero of Newcastle? Definitely Stack. It has lots of little cute bars and food stalls outdoors with fairy lights and heaters in the heart of the city centre. The atmosphere at the weekend is amazing and it just so happens to be beside ROX. The best part is dogs are allowed! One to watch? Ouseburn – it’s a fab area just off the Quayside with a vegan restaurant. It’s very up and coming with some hipster vibes, I predict it will be the hot spot in the next few years. You heard it here first!

Instagram worthy spots? The Great British Cupcakery – if you want to do it for the gram here is your spot! Flower walls, cherry blossom tree, pink furniture with gold accents… it’s so cute. For that ‘Saturday night out with the girls’ pic everyone loves Revolucion De Cuba bathroom is goals and has excellent lighting – thank me later.
