If you’re as inspired as I was after reading the following essays, please visit our newly redesigned website at rowlandhall.org where all the speeches are posted.
I look forward to the new school year, confident it will be stimulating and enriching for students and faculty alike. During the course of the coming year our students will win many awards and demonstrate what they have learned in impressive ways. But, I will always be most pleased at our students’ remarkable poise, confidence, and intellectual maturity as they reflect on their experiences in their own words.
Head of School
4 2011 - 2012
Dear Parents, Alumni, Faculty, Staff, and Friends, Each year in the Annual Report I take a moment to reflect on our students’ wide range of achievements and awards. Many of you have read about them as they happened throughout the year in our digital newsletter, the Flying Lion. So rather than review them here this year, I would like to share something a little different withDuringyou. my sabbatical last year I read a great deal about authentic assessment of students’ learning and I visited 10 of our peer schools, and both reinforced my conviction that many aspects of the Rowland Hall experience are truly special and hard to quantify. At the FROm THE HEAd OF sCHOOL FiFTH GRAdE EssAYs end of each year, I feel great pride in our cumulative student accomplishments, but the individual students who spoke about the tangible and intangible benefits of a Rowland Hall education are what truly impressed me this year. That’s why we’ve chosen to print two of the 15 speeches given by students at the fifth grade commencement in this year-end publication. Each speaker was a fine example of how our school empowers its students to write and share their ideas in front of a large audience. The eighth grade and senior speeches were equally powerful, but I was particularly moved by these young graduates as they reflected on their elementary years and anticipated the big step to middle school.
In the very beginning, we were all welcomed with open arms into Rowland Hall. The Beginning School introduced math, science, social studies, and so many other topics in interesting and creative ways to all the children. Now that I am in fifth grade, I look back and see how much their teaching has helped me. They have created memories in each and every student’s mind like acting out stories, reading with older buddies, games played in P.E., all of our incredible teachers, and so much more that I cannot even begin to describe. The teachers showed us how to deal with problems and disagreements in relationships, how to treat others nicely, and how to work as a cooperative group. Everything they have taught my classmates and me has helped me and let me explore the world in fun and interactive ways. Once I finished Beginning School, I went to the Lower School. In first grade, I learned to read. When you can read, you can spell, and you can write. If they hadn’t taught me how to read, I wouldn’t be able to write this speech today or succeed in life. The teachers taught us math in the next level and continued our lessons on addition and subtraction, which is the heart of all math. Once we completed first grade we went on to second grade and gained more knowledge (fast addition and subtraction facts, the building blocks of multiplication, and more) that helped us do well in third grade where our multiplication lessons began. Then there was fourth grade. Things became more complicated, but because of the incredible system and lessons I was taught, it was easier. Fourth

The Journey of Learning by Sydney Young The journey of learning is truly a gift and Rowland Hall has made my, and all the other students’, elementary educational experience from the beginning to graduation, incredible. I know that everyone’s effort put into this school paid off to give us the excellent education we have today. As the renowned Maya Angelou said, “When you know better, you do better.”

Rowland Hall’s lessons have shown us who we are, the academic things we need to know, and how to live our lives in great ways. Elementary school is the beginning of a great life we hopefully all will have because of our education. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” Rowland Hall has met this goal in elementary school. On behalf of my classmates, I would like to say: Thank you very much, Rowland Hall, and to our parents who have made this opportunity possible.
Thank you Rowland Hall for helping me improve in math and also to enjoy it more.AsI go forward in Rowland Hall I will remember how I felt as a new student, and when I meet another new student I will try to make him or her feel as welcome as you all did for me.

My Rowland Hall Experience by Grace Carlebach I remember nine months ago when I came here as a new student. I had just moved from Hong Kong where I had been living for three years. I only knew a few people, but that didn’t matter because everyone welcomed and included me. I remember my first day and how out-of-place I felt. But Shelby, one of the few people I knew, always stayed by my side and explained everything. Another thing that people were very helpful about was explaining Rowland Hall’s traditions. To be honest, I didn’t expect there to be so many! But I had many helpful people explain them to me.
ANNUAL REPORT 5 grade really helped me in fifth grade where it all came together in math, science, music, writing, and other topics. Throughout the grades, all of my classmates and I can probably say the same thing, “Thank you, Rowland Hall.” Now here we all are graduating from fifth grade and going into sixth grade where we will continue to gain the knowledge and learn the lessons that will last us our lives. Rowland Hall has helped us not only learn the lessons that all of us must know, they have helped us discover ourselves. If we are athletes, artists, musicians, performers, scientists, technicians, or perhaps a job we have seen on a field trip. Thank you to each and every one of the specialty teachers and to the people who have organized this great school for all of us.
I came here from a really great school that had many great customs and traditions, but was also half a world away. When I first got here I was worried that, even though I was born in Utah, I wouldn’t fit in. At first, I did slightly feel that I didn’t fit in, but many people helped me by including me in their games at recess.
One of my fondest memories of the beginning of the year was playing “Fish Out of Water” with my new friends. This is just one of the ways people included me. They also sat with me at lunch and were happy to help me with any questions that I had. When I came to this school, there were some areas in which I wanted to improve. One of them was my ability to do math. At my old school, math was like an Olympic sport; you were expected to train for it outside of class and perform at a gold medal level as soon as you stepped into the classroom. I envy the people who can do that, but I wasn’t exactly one of them. Here at Rowland Hall the learning environment is better for me because if you make a mistake in math class the teachers are there to help you learn from it. So, Rowland Hall has really boosted my confidence in math. I think that because I have experienced success in math class, I feel it is possible for me to do well in math, so I try a lot harder.

From the Chair of the Board of Trustees: ARE WE THE KiNd OF sCHOOL WE WANT TO BE?
6 2011 - 2012
I believe that undergirding our school with a greatly improved, new campus will help our faculty teach and our students learn. In the new school year, we need to break ground for our new campus and get started with the athletic fields. Let’s not worry about the SATs this summer. Let us build something to help our teachers with their work. Let us proclaim a message that is true: our children’s learning is worth everything Rowland Hall can give them.
BoardBobSincerely,SteinerofTrustees Chair
I hope you read the New York Times story, “Risky Rise of the GoodGrade Pill” (June 10, 2012) reporting that students from the best college preparatory schools are taking amphetamines in hopes of doing better on SAT and other standardized tests. It must not be a small problem. It was on the front page of the Sunday edition.
Rowland Hall abhors this message. Our mission is “to inspire students to lead ethical and productive lives.” That means to lead children to be emotionally healthy, hard-working contributors to society, happy with who they are. Do we not recognize this integrity in our programs every year at Rowland Hall? This is our core. No student at our school needs to take a “good-grade pill” to show his or her worth. Our children are reaching their potential, and not incidentally, they are happy. This understanding deepens for me every year. And it leads to action. We must protect the unique relationship of our faculty with our students, the promise of our school to educate the whole child. Now, at the beginning of summer, the NYT tells us about another great absurdity our children must discern. I realize again that our commitment and action to advance Rowland Hall is vital for our children.
Someone is sending these students a terrible message: “You won’t amount to much if you don’t get into the Ivy League,” “You aren’t good enough to be my son as you are,” “We only care about results,” “Do what it takes to win.”

FINANCIAL / ANNUAL REPORT 7
One day in mid-May I arrived a few minutes early to pick up my third grade son who had not yet returned from a class field trip. It was a beautiful day, so rather than sit in the car I walked along the fence line dividing the McCarthey Campus from the site of the future Steiner Campus. In my mind’s eye the vacant land was full of activity. Teams were practicing on the fields, while students were buzzing between the buildings pursuing arts, academics, outdoor science projects, and socializing. Perhaps most relevant to my vision were the third graders who, rather than riding the bus back from their field trip to Lincoln Street where they had seen “James and The Giant Peach,” were laughing, and playing as they walked beneath an arch back to their own division on our united campus. It was a great vision and brought to life the reason the administration, board of trustees, and, yes, even your finance committee is so passionate about the Capital Campaign that will make the vision a reality.
And, while the Capital Campaign is critical to the long-term mission of the school, we must continually stay focused on the present. The finance committee of the Board is pleased to report that the school will enter the 2012-2013 academic year on a strong financial footing. Enrollment is excellent, gifts to the Annual Fund have been generous, and our endowment has helped us increase financial aid budgets.
The true measure of our school’s success is the high quality education our children receive each day, yet there are several financial metrics we track to make sure every dollar is effectively used. Each year we benchmark our school against approximately 52 K-12 day schools around the country. Rowland Hall consistently ranks among schools with the lowest tuition rates, yet also consistently ranks above the mean in faculty pay. We also rank among the top handful of schools with the highest percentage of revenues devoted to salaries; our money is directed to where it will do the most good, attracting and retaining the best possible faculty to work with our children each day.
John Bird Chair, Board of Trustees Finance Committee

Thank you, again, to our outgoing trustees for their hard work and dedication. We all benefit from their efforts. Students, faculty, and staff, especially, extend their gratitude to these parents who continuously give their time and resources to the school.

TO dEPARTiNG
Linda Graves has completed her sixth year on the Board, where she played a very important role representing issues unique to Rowland Hall families living in Park City. She served on the education committee, Capital Campaign committee, and the nominating committee, and she expertly chaired the solicitations committee of the 2010 Auction. We greatly appreciate all the time and effort Linda was willing to devote to the school.
Kelly Patterson served eight years on the Board. Kelly is a professor at Brigham Young University and brought his experience to the education committee including two years as its chair. A true “numbers man,” Kelly helped the school with surveys and graphing, teaching us effective ways to gather pertinent information and systematically analyze the data. He served on the nominating committee and was an invaluable advisor to school administration.

Shari Veverka served three years representing the Lincoln Street Campus’ Home and School Association. She was an active contributor on the education committee and an important voice for a wide range of parent views and concerns. Shari continues to be a committed member of the Home and School Association and we also thank her for her great service to several Auction committees. Shari, we appreciate your support and dedication to the school.
Tiffany Glasgow served six years on the Board. As a physician at the University of Utah specializing in pediatric gastroenterology, Tiffany generously shared her medical knowledge, advising us through public health issues such as the H1N1 flu scare a few years ago. Tiffany served on the education committee and chaired the nominating committee for two years. Because of her children’s involvement with the Rowmark Junior program, she brought particular insight to the Board on issues regarding the ski academy. We were all fortunate to have her clear head and expertise on many issues.
Dr. Lee completed her M.B.A. at NYU’s Stern School of Business in 2006, and among the many accolades she has received are NYU’s Orloff Award for research, the Chang-Lin Tien Education Leadership Award, the Outstanding Teacher Award from the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and being featured in Crain’s New York Business magazine’s 40 under 40: New York’s Rising Stars. Dr. Lee is a professor of radiology in the School of Medicine, and is currently principal investigator for three NIH R01 grants. Her research focuses on the development of quantitative functional MRI for the improved understanding of physiology and disease.
Dr. Lee and her husband, Benedict Kingsbury, have four young daughters, three of whom attend Rowland Hall. Michael Weinholtz Michael Weinholtz, born and raised in Buffalo, New York, has called Salt Lake City home since 1998 when he moved here with his wife, Donna, and son, Chase, and joined the Rowland Hall family. As Chase enters his senior year this fall, he will achieve “lifer” status, having started at Rowland Hall in 4 PreK. Donna has served as a room representative for nearly all of those years, and has volunteered in many other capacities, including chair of the entertainment committee for the 2008 Rowland Hall Auction and band parent liaison to the Home and School Association.Michaelhas been a business owner and executive in the medical staffing industry for over 25 years. Since 1998, he has been Chief Executive Officer of Salt-Lake-City-based CHG Healthcare Services, the nation’s largest physician staffing company. Michael has served on various corporate, civic, and charitable boards, including the Salt Lake Chamber Board of Governors, the United Way of Salt Lake, the American Staffing Association, and the Equality Utah Business Council. He is a graduate of Eckerd College, with a B.A. in business management.
In 2011, Dr. Vivian Lee became the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, Dean of the School of Medicine, and CEO of University of Utah Health Care. Dr. Lee came to the University of Utah from NYU’s School of Medicine where she most recently served as the inaugural Vice Dean for Science, Senior Vice President, and Chief Scientific Officer of the Medical Center.

Melissa Orford
12 2011 - 2012
Melissa Orford was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. She attended Cape Tecknikon College for three years, studying food and clothing technology. She subsequently worked in the meat industry in Cape Town in the area of research and development. Melissa met her husband, James, when he was in medical school and upon completion of his training, they travelled to the United Kingdom and subsequently the United States, settling in Baltimore for James’ residency. Melissa worked for Talbots in Baltimore and Annapolis and became a store manager. They then moved to Boston and started a family.
Mr. Fonarow graduated from the University of California, Davis with a B.S. and earned his masters degree from San Francisco State. Tyler, his wife Gwen, and their two children, Tessa and Josie moved to SLC this summer. Gwen is currently the Controller of Method, Inc.
The 14-member search committee of faculty, staff, and parents met for the first time in the spring of 2011 to organize this search process and identify the characteristics we would seek in a new principal. Last fall we received over 150 applications from all over the country and even a few from abroad. Six semifinalists for the position were invited to visit our school. During the second week of December, 70 faculty, staff, parents, and students interviewed two very strong final candidates. According to Head of School Alan Sparrow, “After such a thorough process, we are very excited that Tyler accepted our offer to become the new Middle School principal.”
Over the past 13 years, Melissa and James lived in five different cities before happily settling down in Salt Lake City. Wherever they lived, Melissa tirelessly volunteered her time in the schools her children attended. She co-chaired the Rowland Hall Book Fair for two years and has served on Rowland Hall’s Home and School executive committee for the McCarthey Campus for the last two years, most recently as first vice president. This year, Melissa is on the Rowland Hall Auction executive committee. Melissa and James’ son, Matthew, attends the Middle School and their daughter, Charlotte, attends the Lower School; both their children ski with the Rowmark Junior program and are involved in many school activities.
We were delighted to welcome Tyler Fonarow to the position of Middle School principal at Rowland Hall in July. Tyler came to us from The Hamlin School in San Francisco where he served as the director of community and character education. During Tyler’s 17 years at Hamlin he also wore many other hats, teaching math, science, English, citizenship, and physical education. In addition, he served as their athletic director and their summer camp director for over a decade.

Karen has left her mark on this school in the form of thousands of students and now alumni, who in turn, have shaped the school. They will miss her smile and encouragement. Her colleagues will miss her inimitable wit, and I will now have to put her home number on speed dial.
AdmissiON diRECTOR KAREN HYdE RETiREs AFTER 28 YEARs
Remarks by alumnae Mary Anne Wetzel ’01 at Ms. Hyde’s Retirement Party in May “It was a dark and stormy night. I woke from a vivid dream, frightened and drenched in sweat. In the dream, I had gone out to the garbage cans at my house, and, to my horror, discovered a corpse. Frozen with terror, I didn’t know what to do. And then, it came to me. I didn’t call my parents, or go inside and notify my husband. Very calmly, I began walking through this dream world in search of Karen Hyde, because I was sure she would know what to do and she would be able to help me. Even though this was a dream, I know my subconscious was right. Karen Hyde was a good choice.Ican’t put into words the impact Karen has had on my life. She has helped so many students. Mine is only one of countless stories about her helping families find a place at Rowland Hall. I came to a Rowland Hall open house with my dad. Within the hour I knew I wanted to go to this school, but it just wasn’t feasible for my family. Luckily for me, my
TRANSITIONS / ANNUAL REPORT 13
Karen has been an admission director at each division of this school at various times in her long, successful career at Rowland Hall. For 28 years, she has served as the ambassador of the school, a genuinely welcoming presence to prospective families, an insightful evaluator of potential students, a cheerleader for the underdog, and an indefatigable overseer of the world of admissions. When I say indefatigable, I mean it. Karen has worked harder than anyone I know, ensuring that Rowland Hall is full of lively, imaginative students who will fill our halls with the sounds of active, heady learning. She has given her heart and soul to this job, so much so that it has been more of a calling than a job.
An excerpt from remarks made by a colleague, Admission Director Kathy Gundersen, at Ms. Hyde’s Retirement Party in May
Karen has been a mentor, a colleague and a most importantly, a friend to me. I had exactly one day of training with my predecessor before I began my job here. But, I had my own version of the “bat phone,” Karen’s direct line. Anytime I had a question, a problem or just wanted to hear her voice of wisdom or wit, I would call. Over the years I have talked to Karen about everything under the sun: the validity of recommendations, inscrutable applicants, helicopter parents, children at risk, inspiring teachers, and refreshingly candid students. Sometimes we would veer away from admission to politics, education, literature, or religion. Our sons, her daughter and now, her grandson Will (RH Class of 2027) fill our conversations as well.
Karen knows everyone in the Rowland Hall community – and beyond. She doesn’t just know them; she knows their mother, their father, their uncle, their first spouse, and the first person in their family to attend Rowland Hall. She is a walking genealogist. In a state that reveres family ties, Karen Hyde knows all the ties that bind.Karen truly understands the essence of Rowland Hall and has shared that with thousands of prospective parents. One of her recent accomplishments of which she may be most proud was her part in writing the proposal for the Malone Family Foundation Scholarship. She worked earnestly on it and was thrilled to be part of the process that invited the first three Malone Scholars to Rowland Hall this year.

Mary Anne has worked in many facets of the school: Middle School administration, admissions, Annual Fund and now alumni programs. Mary Anne’s love and knowledge of the school and our students will dovetail beautifully into this new position.
CHANGEs ANd NEW FACEs AdVANCEmENT
my three years in the Upper School, Karen was a constant part of school life. Even after I graduated, she would always come to the young alumni events during the holidays. Karen always remembered everyone and would ask us what we were up to and how we liked college. When I got my first real grown-up job (that didn’t involve retail or food service), it was at Rowland Hall. Now I was fortunate enough to work with Karen. As our professional relationship formed, I found even more things to love about her. For one thing, she has a fantastic sense of humor and even has an irreverent side. One of the funniest moments of my life was the first time I heard Karen Hyde swear. In many ways, Karen has been my Rowland Hall mom. Or sometimes, a really cool aunt you want to hang out and drink wine with. Our relationship has evolved as I have grown up, and she has always been there. She is irreplaceable. She is one-of-a-kind. She is a kindred spirit. Thank you Karen, for all you have done for me and for so many others. When you leave to take on new life adventures, I will miss you. And I know Rowland Hall will be missing a piece of its heart.”
14 2011 - 2012 Rowland Hall journey didn’t end there. Karen remembered me, and a few months later told me I should apply for a scholarship. She guided me through the process and soon I found myself in her office for an interview. I was nervous, but her warm smile made me feel comfortable and at ease. A few days later, Karen called my house with the good news. I was awarded a Cumming scholarship and my Rowland Hall journey began. Karen was a constant advocate and ambassador for new students like me. She was the friendly, familiar face in the office when I came to pick up my summer reading. She would say hello to me in the hallway and check in to see how I was doing. She came to performances I was in and was always there to congratulate the cast after the Throughoutshow.
With Mary Anne’s move, we were fortunate to find Robyn Payne, RH graduate of 2002, to take the reins of the Annual Fund and Lead Gifts, and to share her expertise in fundraising. Robyn came to us from I-Freedom Direct where she worked as a loan officer. She graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in communication. We are thrilled to have Robyn join the team.
Hilary Gibbons, Robyn Payne, and Mary Anne Wetzel
Earlier this spring, Mary Anne Wetzel ‘01 took on the position of the Alumni Program Director, and now with the departure of Reagan Tolboe, Mary Anne will also head up the directorship of the 2012 Auction. We wish Reagan the very best as she assumes a position in development with Ballet West. Her presence and talents at Rowland Hall will be sorely missed, and we are thrilled that she will continue to officially participate with the school as a member of the Alumni Committee.

CLA ss OF
The 66 members of the Class of 2012 clearly understood the college counseling office’s philosophy that college choice is, first and foremost, about the fit between institution and student. We congratulate them as they matriculate this fall into 45 institutions around the country as well as into several international schools.
Claire Friedman and Carson Lyness
What follows is a list of the colleges and universities to which our graduates will matriculate, followed by a list of all the schools to which our graduates were offered admission. OF THE CLAss OF 2012
This year, as in previous years, more than half of our senior class received offers of merit scholarships to colleges. This class has the highest percentage of National Merit Scholar Semifinalists in the state of Utah, the highest percentage of Rowmark Ski Academy graduates ever, and the highest number of “lifers” of any class at Rowland Hall to date.

Lower School Art Teacher Kathryn Czarnecki Receives Marquardt Award
The Marquardt Award was established in 2011 through a generous gift from Bob Marquardt, a long-time former trustee and Board chair, and father of three Rowland Hall students. This gift to our The Cary Jones Faculty Mentor Award was established through an anonymous gift to the school in honor of Mr. Jones’ dedication to the faculty when he was a trustee and chair of the Board. This year Rowland Hall proudly honors veteran Beginning School faculty member Isabelle Buhler for demonstrating excellence in the classroom and service to the entire Rowland Hall community with the Cary Jones Faculty Mentor Award. endowment annually funds an extraordinary, faculty-proposed, professional development opportunity that will benefit the school as a whole. This year, The Marquardt Award will support Kathryn Czarnecki’s proposal to attend the Les Tapies Art and Architecture summer program at the American School in Switzerland.Theseminar offers teachers the opportunity to explore ideas for strengthening their visual art departments, while reconnecting them with their individual artistic roots and rekindling their passion for teaching art. An important dimension of the program is the interactive, hands-on involvement teachers have in a wide range of workshops, seminars, discussions, presentations, lectures, activities, and field trips, which draw on the rich cultural heritage of southern France.Ms.Czar, as her students know her, looks forward to the opportunity to share and learn from teachers from around the world on ways to implement seminar ideas into the Rowland Hall Lower School art curriculum. One curricular unit she plans to develop from her summer experience explores landscape painting through French artists and working ‘en plein air on the McCarthey Campus.

Twelve years ago, the RMACAC Executive Board inaugurated the Roger H. Campbell Distinguished Service Award to recognize individuals who have achieved unquestioned excellence in counseling students about the transition from high school to college. According to the RMACAC, “These individuals have made significant contributions to RMACAC and our region, through service to students and professionals, and have met the highest standards of honesty, decency, and commitment to the higher education process.”

Merrily and Morris Kulmer, Grandparents of Rowan and Alexandra Burnett
The Kulmers look forward to Grandparents’ Day each year. “Our grandchildren are always so excited to share their school with us. And we love the opportunity to witness the world they are exploring.”
“When we see our grandkids here, they are excited about learning,” Morris adds, “The teachers genuinely understand the needs of the students and provide an environment that is both enriching and fun.”
“Our experience at Rowland Hall began on the Avenues Campus, many years ago, when we chose Rowland Hall for our children, who are now adults. It was a great school then, and today, it is still clear that Rowland Hall continues to hold true to the value of academic excellence and so much more. Two of our grandchildren are currently enrolled at the McCarthey Campus, and we were immediately impressed by the facility – the way the space was designed to provide an exceptional learning experience both in and out of the classroom.”Asalife-long, professional artist, Merrily says she is especially impressed by what she sees being taught in art class – pottery, oil painting, pastels, crafts, and even photography. “I also love the emphasis on nature and respecting the earth. The classrooms are so fun and inviting, sometimes I wish I could stay there all day.”

Teresa Nelson, Second Grade Teacher
If I were to condense into one statement what makes Rowland Hall special, I would say that this school is better at achieving the abstract ideal of developing each student’s potential to the fullest than any other school I have seen. My secret as to how I try to continue this tradition? Over the course of each school year, I transform a group of discrete individuals into a functional unit that acts like a family. The critical part of this transformation comes from teaching the children how to resolve their conflicts with each other and with me, using respectful words to get at the heart of our disagreements. In early school years this consumes almost as much of our time as does the mastery of academics. Learning academics is important and fun; learning to know yourself and to get along with others is important, but sometimes not so fun. I believe the combination of a strong sense of self and a challenging curriculum sets the stage for academic excellence. Achieving this balance is my goal.
My love of Rowland Hall dates back to my own experiences here, as a young Rowland Hall student. And even though we have a new campus, Rowland Hall remains for children what it has always been—a safe, caring environment for learning and discovering. Years ago, that same environment gave me not just a love of learning, but the desire to instill that same passion in others. It also planted and nourished seeds of confidence, rationality, and happiness, qualities that followed me through college, graduate school, and into my professional life.
TEACHER COMMUNITY / ANNUAL REPORT 27

At Rowland Hall, I have had great opportunities to connect with people both in and outside the classroom. As a member of both the boys’ golf and basketball teams I have formed tight bonds with all of my teammates through the ups and downs of a sports season. Sports are a great medium to meet people, and being a part of a team gives one a great chance to share a common love for the game. Sports also bring the school together. We have a great fan-base that travels hours to attend almost every major event.
Another great extra-curricular that sets Rowland Hall apart is our Interim program. Just before third trimester finals, everyone in the high school has the opportunity to go on a local or foreign trip, or participate in service projects. The Interim groups are composed of mixed grades, which offer great opportunities to get to know students from other grades. I chose to go on the Spain interim and I had a great time making new friends. Together, we toured Madrid, Toledo, Seville, and Granada, enjoyed exploring both the city and countryside, and practiced our Spanish. It was a great bonding experience.Whether in the classroom, on the court, or in special extracurricular activities, Rowland Hall creates a strong sense of community and lasting friendships. My family moved from the San Francisco Bay area to Salt Lake City nine years ago, and in looking for a school for our two young daughters, academic excellence and diversity were our biggest priorities. My husband, Raj, and I visited many schools, but during the tour at Rowland Hall, the happy faces of the children we observed confirmed the school would be the best fit for our family. Little did we know at the time, how much more we would be gaining. We have joined a community that has become our extended family, one that shares and believes in giving back. Our daughters have been encouraged by faculty to share their differences in order to give others a more global perspective, as well as respecting and learning from other cultures, experiences, and views. Rowland Hall’s skilled faculty, small class sizes, commitment to service, athletics, and arts programs, and positive role models created the beginning of a lifetime inspired by learning. Our girls, who started in the Beginning School and are now in Middle School, continue to thrive, gain understanding of the world around them, ask questions, and love to learn. They love their school, and so do we. Robin Puri, Parent of Alison and Amber

Rowland Hall is an amazing school to experience. I began my education here as a toddler and continued through my senior year. I grew up feeling that my school was like a second family. I have friends to this day that I met in my beginning years of school and it has been amazing to see us all grow into adults. As I entered high school and started to think about my future beyond Rowland Hall, I was given the room to grow as an individual. I had always had a love for fashion, clothing, and business, and in my high school experience these passions were fostered. My college counselor found some very amazing and intimate universities from which I could choose for my next step. Since my time at Rowland Hall I have opened a local clothing boutique and I believe the networking I started at Rowland Hall has helped my business become successful and made my dreams a reality.

<<< A little one enjoys the Alumni duck pond at the Carnival this spring
Many Rowland Hall graduates remember the “Bazaar” held at the Avenues Campus. The Upper School Student Council resurrected this long-standing tradition last year, in the form of the AllSchool Carnival. This spring, the Alumni Association sponsored a booth with a lollipop tree and a duck pond. The booth was a huge hit with kids young and old, and the alumni volunteers loved interacting with current students of all ages. The booth raised $207, which was donated to the Alumni Scholarship Fund. Special thanks to our alumni volunteers: Rachel Sweet Martin ’88, Nancy Borgenicht ’60, Hillary Amoss Gibbons ’96, Conor Bentley ’01, Libby Mitchell ’92, and Morgan Sorensen ’07. There is no doubt the Alumni Association will continue to be a part of this fun tradition for years to come!

Belly laughs and life lessons seldom go together. But this year’s graduating class was treated to both when local theatre icon Nancy Borgenicht ’60, welcomed the new alumni into the association at the Little America Hotel in May. In her signature style, Nancy told students how important staying connected to Rowland Hall is throughout one’s life, and threw in a few tips about what to expect in college and beyond. She urged students to keep up friendships that often last a lifetime. She also encouraged students to participate in alumni events for “networking opportunities” or “free food and swag!” There is no doubt that the Class of 2012 will always remember their official welcome to the alumni association, and Nancy’s advice to stay connected to Rowland Hall.
Words of wisdom mingled seamlessly with humor and wit as Nancy Borgenicht ‘60 welcomed the Class of 2012 to the Alumni Association at the annual Alumni Association Senior Breakfast. >>>

The Annual Fund raised $821,673.00, surpassing the goal for the year by over $67,000. We were able to surpass our goal thanks to the contributions from you! Thank you parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Because you chose to participate in the 2011-2012 Annual Fund, we were able to support the things that make a Rowland Hall education full and rich, above and beyond the basic curriculum – the arts, music, technology integration, faculty professional development, facilities upgrades, and financial aid.
Charitable Giving at Rowland Hall is Alive and Well
Albert Einstein, widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists and philosophers of all time, is quoted as saying, “The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving.” It is an insight Rowland Hall families and friends put into action every day. This year, you contributed slightly over $17 million to our Capital Campaign, donated $810,000 to the Annual Fund, and will, once again, dedicate hundreds of hours toward creating a successful Auction fundraiser this fall.

Tuition doesn’t cover everything that goes into giving our students the best education possible. In response to this, many people ask, “Why don’t you just raise tuition?” The truth is, many families would find even a small increase in tuition prohibitive. By asking for taxdeductible donations from the entire school community, we can successfully fund the extraordinary programs we provide without raising tuition. Some people can give a little, and some people can give a lot, but the important thing to remember is that every gift matters. We hope everyone will do their part by participating at whatever level is possible for their family. Your donations to the Annual Fund give programs like the arts, music, technology, faculty development, and financial aid the support they need. Please join us this year, and help make the Annual Fund more successful than ever!

A Charitable Gift Annuity is a savvy estate-planning tool. In this case, the donor was able to transfer appreciated stock to Rowland Hall and receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of the gift, and, in addition, annually receive income for her lifetime. The principal assets ultimately pass back to the school at the end of the donor’s life.
Recently, an alumna called to ask if she could anonymously give another type of gift – a gift that would provide lifetime income for her – and simultaneously benefit our students. We were thrilled to help her establish a Charitable Gift Annuity. An annuity, in essence, is a contract in which the charity, in return for a transfer of assets, agrees to pay a fixed income to an individual for his/her lifetime.
EXTRAORdiNARY VisiON: A CAmPAiGN FOR ROWLANd HALL
The great news is that $3.2 million of the $6 million goal for Phase 1A has already been donated by generous Rowland Hall families! According to the Board’s motion, construction can begin when we receive $2.8 million more in pledges, and have 50 to 66 percent of those pledges fulfilled. We think that’s doable by spring 2013.
The Board of Trustees unanimously voted this past March to approve a motion that will allow Rowland Hall to break ground for the first phase of the new Steiner Campus sooner rather than later. Phase 1A of the Capital Campaign, at a price tag of $6 million, includes: grading of the entire site and completion of all the infrastructure for the entire $60 million construction project (not sexy, but the necessary first step!); installation of not one, but two synthetic turf soccer/lacrosse fields, one regulation sized and one practice field, plus seating and landscaping; construction of the trail from Sunnyside Avenue to Mt. Olivet Cemetery; and fees for project management and architectural planning and design.
ADVANCEMENT / ANNUAL REPORT 39
This fall, trustees will begin reaching out to every family at the school in order to raise the remaining $2.8 million needed to build the fields on the new Steiner Campus. They will host gatherings, set up meetings to ask for your support, and put their time and talent to work for the betterment of our school.

The success of this campaign depends on all of us – parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni and friends – to give generously. Please contact Director of Development Libby Ellis to find out how you can get involved.
