4J ARTS & TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY Welcome to the new Arts & Technology Academy! This nearly 100,000 sf school building includes new classrooms, science labs, and learning centers. In the west wing, classrooms circle around a core containing open common areas, the Art Room, STEM Lab, and service rooms. The project is mostly new construction along with a major renovation of three existing gymnasiums. The completed school has a capacity for 450 students, with expansion capability.

7. The Converted Gym

The Arts & Technology Academy’s innovative STEM immersion program infuses science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts throughout the curriculum. Under the mentorship of practitioners, students are exposed to real-world projects and learn to think critically and creatively through handson experimentation. They have access to specialized tools, such as Vernier probes and 3D printers. The STEM lab is a maker space that is designed to be highly flexible and highly visible, showcasing the energy and activity inside.

The building is oriented to maximize daylighting with north- and southfacing clerestories bringing light into the building’s central bar. Unwanted glare and heat gain is controlled through overhangs, sunshades, and blinds. With its exposed mechanical and electrical systems, the building teaches students about energy use. An array of solar panels on the roof helps power the building. A catchment system reduces water consumption by harvesting rainwater to use for toilet flushing.

One of the three renovated gymnasiums was repurposed to contain a band room, a drama room with a stage, two small offices, and support spaces.

Shaped acoustic panels line the walls and ceilings for optimal acoustics. For a sense of scale, the original gym was 3,108 sf. Traces of the gym can be seen in the ceiling of the band and drama rooms. The smaller of the two other gyms was expanded to fit a full-size basketball court.

The learning commons are flexible teaching spaces in the classroom wing that are open to the whole school. They are arranged around the center core, creating an intimacy that fits with the unique school culture. The exposed mechanical and structural systems in the learning commons and throughout the building serve as teaching tools for how the building and systems work. The building is steel frame with a timber roof.

The school is intentionally designed to be a community asset. Many school spaces can be utilized by the community. The media room can be used for lectures, the cafeteria for performances, and the gyms for sports and other events. These spaces can all be accessed for evening and weekend events, giving the school and the larger community flexibility for scheduling outside regular school hours.

Situated on 18 acres, the school connects to the Westmoreland community park and the foothills beyond. In order to fit into the neighborhood context, the building is limited to a two-story height. A bike path and new drop-off area allows the safe comings and goings of students, teachers, and visitors. Through its transparency, the building engages the larger community and park.

Grouping the science and general classrooms in the west wing allows these rooms to be secured during the evening and weekend while other areas of the school are open for community events.

Classrooms are visually transparent and connected, with rapid roll-down shutters in case of emergency. This transparency enables daylighting, which has been proven to improve student comprehension, as well as being a safety and security feature. More informal collaboration can occur in the learning commons adjacent to the classrooms.

The cafeteria opens to the south onto a playing field, creating a strong indooroutdoor connection. A raised stage with a support space and separate entrance allows the cafeteria to transform into a large performance space. The overhang to the south provides shade to the interior so that the room has balanced light from two sides. Acoustic panels are integrated into the ceiling to absorb and reflect sound.
