Hello!

And welcome to the second edition of the Round the Rock magazine!

In what was arguably the weirdest year ever, I decided to start a magazine!

In 2013, I started Round the Rock as an online source for activities and events in the Round Rock area when my youngest child and I got tired of always driving into Austin to find things to do. Both the website and social media channels took off and we quickly evolved into the source for what was happening in the community and an advocate for supporting local businesses.

I always had a dream to create a print publication. I wanted to share the stories of our community, to evoke a sense of pride of living in Round Rock.

We printed our first issue this summer and it was wildly successful!

You’ll find this issue full of all the great reasons to call Round Rock home.

We feature a local family, the multi-generational Deli Family, who have given back to our community in so many ways. We tell you the story behind a local family favorite, My Party Palace. And you will find out about the Backpack Coalition and how they help children in our community.

And because it is fall, we have included some fun activities to do outdoors from easy area hikes to fall farms. Also in this issue, we tell you some stories of Round Rock kids making a difference, local restaurants that are finding inventive ways to reach their customers, and after-school activities for children.

Lastly, don’t miss the Round the Rock Restaurant Bingo Card on the last page. We invite you to support locally-owned restaurants in a fun way and enter to win one of many gift cards to local businesses.

She doesn’t like litter and carries bags with her so she has something to put all the trash in. At parks she will run around picking up trash before she starts playing.

IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

The impact on our community has been cleaner parks and sidewalks. Our city workers do a great job but sometimes they need a little help and if we could all be like Brooklyn our community could be litter free.

Gracie runs a nonprofit organization called Gracies Canned Goods where she helps provide food for our community.

Samantha baked and decorated about 100 dozen heart shaped cookies to give to over 32 hospitals, emergency clinics, police stations and fire stations in and around Round Rock.

WHAT INSPIRED HER

At age 5, she was always so concerned seeing the homeless people on the streets and worried they didn’t have enough food to eat. She asked her mom if she could go door to door collecting food for them. That year, she asked family and friends to donate and collected 100 lbs of food For Hill Country Community Miniseries. She then started collecting every year and raising more and more to donate!

IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

Since the beginning of the pandemic, she has raised and donated $5,500 to help The Backpack Coalition, Hope Austin, Central Texas Food Bank, and Hill Country Community Ministries feed our community and students from RRISD. Since starting this adventure at age 5, she has donated more than 7,000 lbs of food and $13,000 and continues to work hard to keep raising more!

Samantha picked this as a summer project as she wanted to lift the spirits of those in the community that spend their lives work helping others.

FUTURE GOALS

Samantha would like to continue this effort each summer. She is interested in getting more involved in local charities like the Christ Child Society of Texas, Capital Area Inc., which helps expectant mothers and families as well as homeless high schoolers.

Madeline spent the summer making no-sew blankets for the homeless dogs At Texas Humane Heroes and used some of her Tooth Fairy money to buy treats and supplies.

She said, “I really wanted to help the dogs. I thought the blankets would make it a little nicer while they were at the shelter waiting to be adopted.”

IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

Texas Humane Heroes was happy to receive the supplies.

They are an incredible organization that rescues more than 3,000 animals a year from kill shelters. But we think Madeline gained more from the act. She understands now that she can put her energy towards creating good in the world and how good that feels. We hope she keeps it up and inspires other kids.

She composed a ‘welcome back’ graphic in chalk for a local Sport Clips. She also drew an illustration in chalk of a young doctor in support of health care professionals.

She wanted to create something eye catching and uplifting to welcome back the Sport Clips stylists and their customers. Art has the power to move people and she wanted to support the community and inspire happiness in others with the art she makes.

Would it surprise you to know that children in our community don’t often have enough food on the weekends to sustain them with energy for the week?

What if I told you it was over 1000 children here in Round Rock?

What? Here? But we are an affluent city?

That’s what I thought when I first learned about the Backpack Coalition almost six years ago. It all began in 2010, when a Round Rock ISD teacher recruited some friends to help feed 17 of her children over Spring Break.

Recognizing a much bigger need, they partnered with local churches and small businesses to help provide meals for almost 500 students the next year. In 2013, that number rose to almost 700. Now they are feeding over 1000 students in 20 different elementary, middle and high schools.

A few years ago, I visited one of the schools on a Friday when a team of volunteers were busy distributing food.

to the pre-packed bags. The bags include nutritious items such as canned ravioli, mac & cheese, vienna sausages, and juice. Slipped into the children’s backpacks, all this is done very discreetly.

It was an absolute humbling experience to watch these grateful children head back to their classrooms with smiles on their faces.

To make this work, it takes a team of over 200 volunteers each week. Volunteers shop for food, organize, and pack bags and then distribute them to the schools on Fridays. I visited the Left: An assembly line forms to create the kits being taken to each school.

Shikha Gupta and her two daughters try to volunteer time each week. “I love volunteering at the Backpack Coalition. We come here almost every week. We just love it - especially my little one. It feels like a community and family. We feel that we made a difference to kids in our school.”

This is a ministry everyone can easily help. A bag of food that provides seven meals to one child for a weekend costs just $5. That’s about the same price for a fancy cup of coffee. The Backpack Coalition has a goal to feed all hungry kids in Round Rock. When a child is not adequately nourished over the weekend, studies show it takes them until Wednesday to recover full cognitive ability, only to start the process over again each Friday.

Right before we were set to print this issue, we learned the sad news that due to COVID-19, The Backpack Coalition has had to shut their doors. Unfortunately, their model would not work in the new environment the pandemic has caused.

She has spent the last 13 years owning a small store in our great city and fully credits the support of

fter growing up in Pennsylvania and getting a degree in medical technology from Penn State, her father moved his bathtub refinishing business to Round Rock in 1976. Sandy and her husband, Vince, followed them and have been here ever since.

“Vince and I have lived here for 40 years now and the ‘small town’ feel of Round Rock continues today.

Although the population has changed significantly, (4000 back in 1976!) Round Rock still feels like that small sleepy town we moved to 40 years ago.” Deli recalls.

Sandy & Vince raised their son, Vincent Jr. here in Round Rock. They lived near downtown and some of their favorite memories were the many nights they spent at the ballfields at the end of Main Street, eating sausage wraps for dinner and watching their son play Little League baseball.

At that time, Sandy took a job as the very first medical technologist for the newly built Round Rock Hospital (today, it is known as Saint David’s Hospital Round Rock). Sandy had a successful career and worked her way into medical sales. She enjoyed sales and the rewards that came with it.

Then in 2007, while building a pool, she couldn’t find beautiful landscape pottery to decorate with. So, Sandy started Round Rock Pottery while she still had a full-time job. Round Rock Pottery not only carried exquisite pottery pieces, it featured home decor and floral arrangements as well. While she started it as a hobby and had very limited hours, she was working 7 days a week and it was getting to be a lot.

When she decided to retire from her corporate job in August of 2013, she wanted to run her business full-time and knew that selling landscape pottery and water features wouldn’t be enough. Sandy brought in products that typically would be found in a boutique or gift store and in 2013, opened Mays Street Boutique.

Mays Street Boutique offers home goods, designer jewelry, art & apparel in a cozy, colorful setting.

Sandy’s daughter-in-law asked her to look into selling Kendra Scott jewelry and after a long vetting process, Mays Street Boutique became the first boutique in the area to sell Kendra Scott.

“Little did I know how popular this jewelry was. It put Mays Street Boutique on the map! The rest is history!” Deli said. “It was good from the get go. And it’s because of the community support. Supporting small and supporting local has become even more important.”

Because of the success of Mays Street Boutique, Sandy began looking for opportunities to give back to the community.

She was on the board of the Chasco YMCA and supported many of their events, was one of several who helped with the annual Fashion Show at Texas Baptist Children’s Home, and has sponsored and donated to several schools, sports and various organizations all over the community. MSB has sponsored a therapy horse for many years at ROCK, Ride On Center for Kids in Georgetown.

Through various events, such as a Woman’s Expo and the annual Jingle Bell Bash, Sandy was able to purchase a total of 5 chairs in four years time - two for Texas Hunters for Heroes, a pediatric chair for ROCK, a trackstander for disabled vet and former APD Officer, Tammy Renfro, and most recently, a chair for Veterans Outdoors.

Last year, Sandy felt the time was right for her to retire. She and Vince began building their retirement home out in the country and she was ready to put Mays Street Boutique up for sale. Little did she know, the perfect new owner would be her son and daughter-in-law, Vince and Ashley Deli.

Veterans Outdoors is an organization honors wounded veterans’ patriotism and their sacrifice by providing quality hunting, fishing and outdoor related activities.

“It’s heartwarming to see that the work that you have done and the money that you have raised is going back to a good cause.

The Delis always had a special place in their hearts for disabled veterans. In 2005, Sandy had a 28-year-old cousin killed while on his 4th tour in Fallujah with the Marines.

So she always knew that she wanted to find a way to help and in 2016, she formed the Mays Street Charity.

After hearing about trackchairs, an allterrain wheelchair that can help wounded veterans get anywhere - especially hunting and fishing, she partnered with the locally owned business that builds trackchairs, Carlson Mobility, to begin fundraising to

After getting married at the little chapel at the Texas Baptist Children’s Home, Vince & Ashley settled in the Round Rock area over 18 years ago and have raised their two daughters, Avery (16) and Alivia (12).

They are both very active in the community, serving on the Chasco YMCA Board of Directors. So it was a natural fit for Ashley to become the boutique’s new owner at the beginning of 2020.

“Business has been positive - we were able to use the time effectively. We created a website so that even though our doors were not physically open, we could still offer the great products our customers loved.”

As you can imagine, local support of small businesses is even more important than ever. And it’s time to support these business owners who have given back so richly to the community like the Deli’s have.

I love unique businesses. And Round Rock has many unique, precious businesses that are made just for kids.

My Party Palace is just the place - the perfect location to host a sweet birthday party for your princesses.

W

hen we first moved to Round Rock, my daughter was the perfect age for a party at My Party Palace.

I remember being so impressed with what a great business concept it was.

Through the years, I have had the privilege of seeing the heart of the owner of My Party Palace. Michelle Azuara is one of the most kind & generous women I have ever met.

She is so supportive of people - always reaching out to help. And she truly loves all her clients.

“I tell people I have the best job in the world. Seeing a child light up at a party never gets old.” Azura tells me.

My Party Palace is a private venue that hosts little girls’ birthday parties: Princess Parties, Diva Rock Star

Parties, Unicorn Parties, Spa Parties and more! But what’s even cooler, all of the parties are self-esteem and manners & etiquette-based. Lessons on self-esteem and how to wipe your face (not on the sleeve of your princess dress!) are woven into all aspects of the party.

“It’s probably the highlight of every party to me. When a child lights up and says, ‘I’m beautifully and wonderfully made!’ and really see them believe it.” Azura says.

Each party consists of dress-up, make-overs, runway-walks, and then tea time, where the manners & self-esteem are presented. Then the girls will enjoy story time and a craft. The best part of the party? The entire two hours is planned and executed by the team at My Party Palace, which means parents can sit back and actually enjoy their child’s party.

My Party Palace opened in 2005. Azura had been working at Treehouse Pediatrics at the time and had had her daughter’s birthday party there. When the opportunity came up to buy the business, she wasn’t looking to make a change, but she and her husband thought it could be a fun opportunity. What started as a weekend job to be home with her two daughters each week has turned into her passion.

“Raising daughters can be challenging, but when they grow up seeing their mom tell other little girls they are beautifully & wonderfully made, I was able to see them flourish into who they were meant to be.

Being able to empower not only my daughters, but girls in our community as well, has been the most rewarding part.”

The Party Palace closet is full of dresses, costumes, shoes and accessories for everyone.

The pandemic has definitely changed things for My Party Palace. They hosted a party over Spring Break in March and closed their doors for almost 3 months. But they still found ways to connect with their community. Each week, they hosted Facebook Live Princess storytimes.

And they visited homes with “Front Yard Princess Hellos” with some of the girls who were unable to have their scheduled parties.

They have always used disposable equipment and make-up for each party, but post-pandemic they have put more safety measures into play. Every item used at a party is sanitized before it can be used again. Masks and social distancing are observed during the parties. And they have

increased the time between parties.

“Being a mom first, I will always put the safety of the girls ahead of everything else.”

My Party Palace has been located in Downtown Round Rock for the past 15 years.

During that time, she has hosted countless parties and still found ways to give back to the community.

Besides the many donations to various schools and organizations, every holiday season, My Party Palace has hosted a toy drive with Mrs. Claus that benefits the Texas Baptist Children’s Home.

find dinosaur tracks Yes, real dinosaur tracks! Right here in our own backyard! Ok, not exactly in our backyard, but not that far from Round Rock, you can find actual dinosaur tracks. Park where the San Gabriel River crosses the 183 (there’s a dirt/ grass lot in between the 183 North and 183 South). Walk down under the bridge and head west once you hit the riverbed. There may be water depending on recent rainfall, so plan on wearing water/hiking shoes just in case. The tracks are about a half mile hike west of the 183. One big footprint is circled and a few are filled in with white plaster so they are easier to spot.

SWIM, FISH AND HIKE STAND UNDER A WATERFALL at Crockett Gardens and Falls at Lake Georgetown. This is a challenging but rewarding hike! Take the San Gabriel River Trail at Cedar Breaks Park. You have to hike about 3 miles before you see the falls, which should be pleasant on a nice fall day!

GAREY PARK in Georgetown has several hiking trails, but everyone’s favorite is probably the one that leads you down to the San Gabriel River. The nights will feel cool enough to sleep comfortably, but the days will still be warm enough to swim here. Tejas Camp sits along the Good Water Loop Trail and has plenty of spots to swim in the San Gabriel River. 4560 Co Rd 258, Liberty Hill.

URBAN EAT.DRINK Local favorite, URBAN was closed for several months but when they re-opened they introduced new drinks and menu items like the charred eggplant dip.

They created a whole new menu for the popular Weekend Brunch.

They also created kits to make their signature cocktails at home and offered live music on the patio at the restaurant Thursday-Saturday nights.
